One day ago..
"What are the Houses?" Iris was listening to her friend attentively. He told her about the train, and Diagon Alley, and the Wizengamot, and he was just getting to the Hogwarts Houses. "Be pay-tee-ent." Draco said.
"That's not how you pronounce it." Iris told him importantly. "You do it like this: pay-shee-ent."
"Good for you, then. I read it, can you read?" He stuck his tongue out.
"Yeah, I can." Iris grinned, proud to have one over him.
"Really? I thought you lived with Muggles?"
"What does that have to do with anything?!" Iris asked him.
"They're animals, Father told me that they can't read or anything."
"I can. This one time, I found one of Dudley's baby books and I hid it in my cupboard, and Uncle Whale and Auntie Horse didn't see."
"S'that really their names?" Draco looked astounded.
"Nah. It's Dudley, Vernon, and Petunia. Just funny to call them that."
"Oh."
"Yeah. So. The Houses?"
Draco looked excited. He grinned as he said, "There's Gryffindor, the house for reckless, mudblood-loving idiots, Father said he'd disown me if I got into in there, Ravenclaw, the house for know-it-alls, but some of them aren't too bad, Hufflepuff, the house for nice, lovey-dovey morons and finally, the best house, and the House I'm going to be in, Slytherin."
"So?" Iris prompted. "What's the deal with Slytherface?"
"Slytherin, I, and they're cunning, vengeful, sneaky, smart but not in an annoying way, and they only accept the best." Draco puffed his chest out proudly, which Iris didn't really understand: it's not like he'd been Sorted yet. "Wait - how do you get sorted?" Iris asked him.
"You just wear an ugly, worn hat," Draco said disdainfully, "and it puts you in a House."
"Oh." Iris was surprised. "I was..expecting..more."
"I know. Father's always trying to get them to change that."
"Which house d'you think I'll be in?" Iris asked nervously.
"Let's see. Do you..like being nice?"
"Dunno."
"Do you think you'd yell 'I know the answer' if you did? In class?"
"These questions are stupid."
"Would you save someone randomly just because you can?"
"What?"
"...Nevermind."
Today:
Iris was so bloody excited!
Today was the day she'd get to meet some of Draco's friends..maybe they'd be her friend too!
She'd been a little reluctant at first, but Draco had promised to introduce her and be nice and stay her friend, so she said okay.
And in just an hour, they'd arrive!
"So what are their names again?" Iris was nervous, too.
"Daphne Greengrass, Blaise Za-Zambini.. and Pansy Parkinson.." At the last name Draco wrinkled his nose. Seeing Iris' questioning look, he explained, "we're going to be married when we're seventeen."
"Zabini," Corrected Lucius, "and Draco, nothing is definite, we may break off the marriage to the Parkinson girl, don't look so disappointed. We're also considering Daphne Greengrass.."
"Faaaather..don't tell Iris that stuff!" His voice was petulant.
Iris smiled evilly. "No please, Mr Malfoy, do continue!"
Draco gave her a betrayed look.
"As much as I'd love to, Miss Potter," Lucius said, "I must go and set up the playroom."
He left the room. "Well, that was a downer," sighed Iris.
"Oh, shut up."
They continued to chat lightly until they heard the loud sound alerting them to someone's arrival. "They're here!" Both children raced to the door.
Lucius hurried forward and opened the door. "Where's Potter?" Iris heard a voice hiss. "Shh, be patient, Pansy dear," another voice scolded the previous one. Three children streamed into the room. "Go upstairs, children," Lucius said as he started to chat with the adults.
All of the children raced upstairs. They sat down and the blond girl was the first to speak. "So you're Potter, right?"
"Yeah, you're.." she remembered Draco's descriptions, "Daphne Greengrass?"
The girl's smile told her she was right. "Nice to meet you," Iris smiled back.
Over the next few hours, Iris got to know the three quite well. She knew she'd found instant best friends in Daphne and Blaise. Pansy, on the other hand..
"Drake-Drake, braid my hair!" She commanded.
"But Paaansy I don't waaaaannaaaa..." Draco whined.
The first thing she said was, "you would do well to be my friend, not with Greengrass, I'm WAY cooler and have more money." Right in front of Daphne.
"Even Blaise is a better friend than you," Iris scoffed, and as if to prove her point, pulled Blaise into a giant hug.
"Ahch!" Blaise gasped. "Can't..breathe..I..ris.." She let him go.
"You'll regret this!" Pansy turned around, stuck her nose in the air and yelled, "let's go, Draco!" Nobody moved. "Ugh!"
The playdate continued anyways.
At the end of the day, Iris was happy to have made new friends - and an enemy - but at least she'd have that to look forward to when she got to Hogwarts!
