Vlad King's Green Bean

Chapter two: How the first week went

The second day of the school year for UA saw the homeroom teachers for the first year hero course students run the Battle Trial exercise. This is where the classes are each divided up into ten teams of two, with five teams being designated as 'hero' teams while the other five are designated as 'villain' teams, and the hero team of a round has to try to either capture the villain team they face or capture the item that the villain team is guarding.

Meanwhile, the villain team in a round has to either capture the hero team they face or keep them from securing the payload they're guarding until time in the round runs out. If the hero team succeeds in either of their goals, they win, and if the villain team succeeds in either of THEIR goals, they win. A simple enough exercise that the first year hero course homeroom teachers, Aizawa and Sekijiro, used this year to see where their respective students stand currently.

...

At the end of the second school day, a majority of the (primary) UA staff were meeting in the meeting room to discuss the progress of the first year hero course students. "So Shouta, Sekijiro," Nezu began, "How did your respective classes do in the Battle Trial exercises today?"

Aizawa pulled out a packet of printed sheets of paper stapled together. "...With the exception of the Bakugo-Kirishima hero team," Aizawa began, "Every hero team in my class lost today."

A nunber of eyes went wide at the Underground Hero's statement. "Really, Sho?" Hizashi asked, his tone sounding surprised, "The hero team of those Bakugo and Kirishima boys is the only hero team in your class to win their Battle Trial round today?"

"It's simply an exercise, no need for you or the others here to go bug-eyed out of shock over the results," replied Aizawa, "In fact, I was able to use the overall results in my class today to stress to my students that relying on the preconceived notion that heroes will always come out on top against villains is irrational. They need to give it their all and do what they can in order to stand a chance against villains." Aizawa arched a wry eyebrow. "...Why else do you think the motto for this school is 'Plus Ultra'?"

Nemuri leaned in, clearly wanting to know more. "So I take it that the Bakugo and Kirishima team is the MVP team of your class today? After all, as the only hero team in your class who won, I bet that they are-"

"Actually no," Aizawa replied. Gently shaking his head, Aizawa said, "Sure, Bakugo and Kirishima are the only hero team in my class who won their Battle Trial round today. But their efforts against the villain team of Koda and Sato were virtually nothing more than Bakugo blasting his opponents with explosions and barking orders at Kirishima who followed. They weren't acting as much like equal partners like I'd hope out of my students."

As the underground hero flipped through his packet, Nemuri asked, "So which team in your class would you say was the overall best?"

Aizawa arched a wry eyebrow at Nemuri. "...Personally, I'd give that credit to the victorious villain team of Tokoyami and Asui. They worked together flawlessly, and were able to secure a sound win against the hero team of Ojiro and Mineta. I plan to use the good teamwork that Tokoyami and Asui displayed in the Battle Trial today as an example for what the rest of the cla-"

Before Aizawa was able to stop her, Nemuri reached forward, yanked the packet out of his hands, eliciting a cry of annoyed complaint out of Aizawa in the process, and began to flip through it. Nemuri stopped short on one of the pages when it caught her attention. "...Todoroki and Yaoyorozu were one of the losing hero teams?!" Nemuri said, "And they lost to the villain team of Kaminari and Jiro?!"

"Wait a minute," Hizashi said, then went on after turning to look at Aizawa, "Hey Sho, ain't Todoroki and Yaoyorozu both of the kids in your class who got into UA on recommendation? And yet you had decided to put them both into one team?"

"Aizawa had his students draw lots at random to determine teams," All Might, who sat in on the meeting, spoke up, "I know as I was there to help out. Still, I can see your concerns, Yamada, having two of the absolute top students in class on one team. Even more so since Young Todoroki is the son of Enji." After gently shaking his head, All Might went on, "That's why it's all the more surprising that the hero team in that round lost."

Looking through the packet she took from Aizawa, Nemuri said, "Let's see what else we got here. The Uraraka-Sero villain team defeated the Iida-Hagakure hero team, and the Ashido-Shoji villain team defeated the Monoma-Aoyama hero team." Lowering the packet she snatched from Aizawa, Nemuri said, "...Wow. We ought to be glad that the kids all want to be heroes."

All Might nodded in agreement. "My thoughts exactly, Kayama." Turning to look at Sekijiro, the Symbol of Peace went on, "Well anyway Kan, how about your class? They did their own Battle Trial exercise today, did they not?"

The Blood Hero nodded in confirmation. "Indeed, All Might. And three of the five hero teams in my class won their rounds. However..." Sekijiro then turned his attention to Aizawa before continuing. "...I think that some of us here," Sekijiro said with a hint of knowing in his tone, "Would be interested to hear that one of the two winning villain teams in my class consisted of Midoriya and Honenuki."

Aizawa arched a wry eyebrow at Sekijiro. "...So Midoriya got lucky today. I bet that-"

"Actually, this reminds me of something I've been wanting to ask Nezu," All Might said, speaking up and interrupting Aizawa in the process, "But couldn't ask yesterday since I couldn't find him." The Symbol of Peace turned his attention to the animal principal of UA. "I got it that Young Midoriya was supposed to be placed into Class 1-A under Aizawa here, and yet he's in 1-B instead. Was the info I got outdated, or was a change made at the last minute?"

The underground hero turned his wry look towards All Might. "...I didn't want Midoriya in my class due to how he proved to be a liability during the practical portion or the entrance exams. Kan here, who had been similarly as irrational as you're apparently being right now, convinced Nezu to permit swapping Midoriya into 1-B and Monoma into 1-A." Aizawa's gaze was unwavering. "...You've got a connection of sorts to Midoriya, don't you All Might?"

"If I do, it's none of your concern as you aren't his homeroom teacher," All Might replied, capable of being just as firm as Aizawa.

...

After that meeting, the UA staff dispersed, although Sekijiro caught up to All Might. "I need a few moments in private with you, All Might," Sekijiro said, "It's about how you apparently knew Midoriya ahead of time."

"Oh, anything I can help with?" All Might asked as he and Sekijiro went back into the meeting room, which was now totally empty of people aside from the two of them.

The Blood Hero let out a sigh. "Be honest with me," Sekijiro said, "How is it that you know Midoriya? I need details here because I want to do right by Midoriya, to make sure he gets the help he needs to get a firm handle on his quirk."

All Might was concerned about Sekijiro asking for details, but he could understand where he was coming from. And at least he wants to do right by Midoriya, give him what he needs in order to grow into the splendid hero that the Symbol of Peace knows that the green haired boy will become one day. All Might still had some secrets that he wanted to withhold, but he did owe it to Sekijiro, as well as to Midoriya, to help out. So he gave a few tidbits to help push things along without revealing the true background here.

"I... have taken Young Midoriya under my wing, as it were," All Might began to explain, "His quirk is very similar to my own." More than Sekijiro could even begin to guess, but that's another story for another time. "I trained him for the ten months leading up to the UA entrance exams, to get him ready for the trials that laid a head of him."

"Well that would explain why you're interested in how Midoriya's doing," Sekijiro remarked, "But I am still concerned about how he did bust his arm up a bit during the practical portion of the entrance exams. Did you do any quirk training with him in those ten months?"

All Might was caught flat footed here. "Umm... no, not really," All Might admitted, "All I had him do was train his body to its absolute limit by working out."

Sekijiro arched a wry eyebrow. "Well that further backs up my argument against Aizawa dismissing Midoriya as a lost cause. Midoriya never really did get quirk training. That confirmation then leads me to two points for you, All Might." Counting off of his fingers, the Blood Hero began, "One, shame on you for not doing anything to help Midoriya to learn to safely use his quirk. Two, do you know of anyone at all who could help Midoriya get a handle on using his quirk?"

The Symbol of Peace looked a bit nervous, even backing up a half step. Memories of his own training back in his youth under a certain yellow speedster came bubbling up. "Well... umm... well I do know of one man who can fit the bill," All Might began, "My own teacher who helped me-"

"Can he help Midoriya?" Sekijiro asked.

Sighing in a defeated tone, All Might replied, "Knowing him, he'll probably insist on helping, even more so when he hears that I've not done much in the ways of properly helping Young Midoriya." All Might also added in his mind, "Gran Torino will probably also wanna whack me upside the head when he hears that I've messed up in part of Young Midoriya's training." To Sekijiro, All Might said, "I'll go see my old teacher and see if he's up for it."

"Please see that you do," Sekijiro replied, "I want the best for all of my students, and if I have to go the extra mile for one of them, then so be it." Looking right to All Might, Sekijiro added, "That's part of how I go 'Plus Ultra'."

All Might, despite his worries of having to meet with his old teacher Gran Torino, couldn't help but crack a small smile. "...Well it's good to see you want to do all that you can for the students. You are as I thought you were, a model teacher."

Sekijiro returned the smile, gave a nod of acknowledgement. "Thanks for the vote of confidence there, All Might."

"I..." All Might added at the end, "...Don't suppose that you can give me some pointers on how to be a good teacher, could you?" Sekijiro then let out a barking laugh of amusement, which had helped to lighten the mood for the two men there. All in all, Sekijiro was feeling that things were already on the path to look up for the green haired boy.

The next morning, Izuku walked through the front gates of UA to attend another day of class. When he walked in, he was met up by Juzo, Yosetsu, and Nirengeki, who had quickly become friends with him. "Hey guys, how's it going?" Izuku greeted.

"I heard that there's some news media guys swarming their way towards UA," Yosetsu said, "We ought to be careful of that." Relaxing a bit, Yosetsu went on, "But aside from that, it's pretty chill so far today. And congrats again on the win you and Juzo here scored in the Battle Trial yesterday."

Izuku nodded once to Yosetsu in thanks for the praise. Given how little he got over his life, it meant a lot to Izuku when people showed him even the base level of common courtesy that's to be expected. Turning to look at the boys as a whole, Izuku asked, "So what all can we expect to do in class today, you think?"

Shrugging, Nirengeki said, "Hopefully something tame, given-"

"Hey kids!" a random female voice called out, cutting Nirengeki off and making the four boys all turn to see a female news reporter, with a cameraman behind her, practically shoving a microphone into their faces. "Can you give us a word on what it's like to have All Might as a teacher?" the reporter had practically demanded, "People across Japan wants to know what it's like to be learning from the Symbol of Peace himself!"

Pointing at the female reporter, Juzo asked, "Are you even supposed to be here on UA grounds? Did you get the proper clearance for it?"

"No and no, Honenuki," Sekijiro said, catching the attention of the boys as they saw their homeroom teacher, accompanied by Ryo Inui (the pro hero Hound Dog), step in to force the media back.

As Sekijiro was trying to tell the media off, Ryo turned to look at the boys. "You four run along to Sekijiro's classroom now," said the Hunting Dog Hero, "He and I will take dealing with this situation off of your hands for you."

"By all means, please," Juzo replied, then added to the other boys, "Let's bounce while the teachers take the media bullet for us." Izuku, Yosetsu, and Nirengeki all nodded in agreement with Juzo as they proceeded to take off for the Class 1-B homeroom.

A short while later, after all of Class 1-B was seated in class, they grouped up to discuss the midia circus that was outside UA's front door. "So the ever-hungry media came to try to dig out a scoop on All Might teaching here," Jurota remarked, "And the teachers are trying to get the media to back off."

Setsuna stood up from her seat and held her right hand over her chest. "Oh Kan-sensei, we'll never forget the brave sacrifice that you and Inui-sensei both made to help some of the lads escape from being consumed by the news media," Setsuna remarked.

Togaru arched a wry eyebrow at Setsuna. "Kan-sensei and Inui-sensei aren't going to die from confronting the news media, Tokage," Togaru remarked dryly, "...At least I hope that they don't."

Gesturing to Izuku and his group, Itsuka said, "Hey boys, similar to how Kan-sensei and Inui-sensei saved you four from being harassed by the news media, I heard that the Class 1-A homeroom teacher Aizawa-sensei, who was backed by Yamada-sensei like how Inui-sensei backed Kan-sensei, saved some Class 1-A students from a similar fate."

"Wait a minute," Izuku began, "Yamada-sensei? As is Hizashi Yamada who's otherwise known as the pro hero Present Mic? He teaches here at UA too?!"

Jurota turned to regard Izuku with a curious look. "...You are very well informed on the world of pro heroes, Midoriya. Such knowledge could prove useful in the futu-"

Jurota was cut off when Sekijiro came walking into the classroom, looking mildly drained. "Class, we're going to take it easy for a bit," Sekijiro said, "At least until I feel more pepped up. Dealing with the media outside has drained me a bit."

"At least you're alive, Kan-sensei," Togaru remarked, "Tokage was under the impression you and Inui-sensei were both going to die from dealing with the media."

"It's called being dramatic!" Setsuna insisted.

Waving a hand, Sekijiro said in a mildly tired tone, "Ryo and I both lived, but I can't honestly blame Tokage for thinking that Inui and I would both meet our respective ends dealing with the media, even if she meant it as a joke." Lowering his hand he waved with, Sekijiro went on, "Now class, while I catch my breath, we're going to be holding an in-class election for class representative and vice representative."

As the students cheered, some even saying that they were going to be doing something normal, Sekijiro said, "Now, a few rules. One, which should be obvious, each student can only vote once. Two, none of you are allowed to vote for yourselves. Three, the student with the most votes will be class representative while the one who comes in second place will be vice representative. Are there any questions?"

Holding up a hand, Shihai asked, "Yeah, where's the ballot box? Also, will be be given sheets of paper to use as ballots or will we have to provide our own?"

Getting up, Sekijiro got something out from underneath his desk; a giant lime green foam cowboy hat. "I borrowed this from Yamada," Sekijiro explained to his students, "We'll use this to collect the ballots. As for paper, I expect that you all have paper of your own, so use that." Letting out a sigh, the Blood Hero called on two random students in his class. "Kendo, Midoriya, you two handle going around the classroom to collect ballots."

Itsuka and Izuku nodded in understanding and got up, with Itsuka receiving the giant lime green foam cowboy hat from Sekijiro. "...Is this really Yamada-sensei's hat, Kan-sensei?"

"It is, Kendo," Sekijiro confirmed with a nod, "And it makes sense for him, given that he's the only person that I know of who'd willingly go out and get something this outrageous." Itsuka, still a bit on the weirded out side that Hizashi owns something that Sekijiro appropriately dubbed as outrageous, nonetheless went about the classroom, gathering ballots with Izuku. They put their own ballots in at the end, mixed up what was inside, then used the chalkboard to do a tally.

...

To the mild dawning horror of Izuku, he got the most votes at eight; Itsuka got five votes, Jurota got three votes, and Tokage, Juzo, Kinoko, and Sen each got one vote. "Woot!" Yosetsu cheered as he stood up from his desk, pumping both of his fists up into the air, "Midoriya's our class rep! Let's hear it for Green Bean!"

At the cheering of most of Class 1-B, a nervous Izuku stood at the front of the class, with Itsuka standing next to him due to getting the second most votes, thus cementing her as the vice rep for the class. Izuku was nervous, especially since he never thought that he'd be voted in as class rep for Class 1-B. But here he was, with the rest of the class cheering him on now that he was going to be leading them as a class with Itsuka at his side.

Sekijiro, who was able to catch his breath a bit, gave an amused smile as he saw Izuku being given time in the spotlight. The Blood Hero also got confirmation from All Might that he did indeed get his old teacher to agree to help with Midoriya's quirk training. Things were looking up for the green haired boy, and that helped to make Sekijiro's heart feel full. Seeing what all good fortune was now coming Midoriya's way; it's what any teacher would want for him.

...Well, any teacher who cared to do their job properly, that is.

Later that day during lunch, Izuku was sitting down and eating with Yosetsu, Juzo, and Nirengeki. "I still can't believe that I was voted as our class's representative," Izuku said, "I mean, with all due respect, I'm not exactly the kind of person who should be leading everyone."

Shrugging, Juzo replied, "I think you'll rock the class rep role, Midoriya. It's why I voted for you."

"You voted for me, Honenuki?" Izuku said out of surprise. After Juzo nodded in confirmation, Izuku looked to Yosetsu and Nirengeki. "Who did you guys vote for?" To Izuku's further surprise, both Yosetsu and Nirengeki pointed right at him.

Gesturing to Izuku, Juzo said, "Midoriya, dude, you're selling yourself short. You've proven to be a sharp mind that the rest of our class can rally behind, even though we've only known each other for a little under half a week by this point."

"Not to mention you really can figure out another person's quirk in next to flat," Nirengeki added, "You and Juzo won your round in the Battle Trial exercise because of how you were able to think of new tricks on the fly for Juzo to use."

Izuku chuckled out of mild embarrassment. "Well analyzing quirks has always been something of a hobby of mine for the longest time. You won't believe how many notebooks I've filled up with nothing but analysis on the quirks of other people." Looking a bit embarrassed, Izuku added, "You guys probably think I'm something of a nerd, but-"

"We all have our odd hobbies, Midoriya," Yosetsu assured his green haired friend, "There's no need for you to sweat the small stuff."

Both Juzo and Nirengeki nodded in agreement. "Yeah, it's no big deal," Juzo went on, "Hell, that there quirk analysis hobby of yours, depending on how far deep in your analysis goes, might wind up being quite the boon to your efforts in beco-"

*WRRRRRRRRRRREERYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!*

Juzu stopped short when he and literally everyone else in the cafeteria heard an alarm go off. "Holy crap!" Setsuna who sat at the far other end of the long cafeteria table Izuku and his friends sat at cried out in alarm, "We're being invaded!"

Scoffing, Togaru said, "Tokage, we are not being inva-"

"Attention students of UA," Nezu's voice called out over the intercom, "This is your principal speaking. The UA Wall surrounding campus has just been breached, and members of the news media are now swarming in. Please make your way to your respective homeroom classes in as orderly and calm of a manner as possible while the school staff deals with getting the news media members to vacate off of UA grounds. Thank you."

As the alarm was still going off, Setsuna turned to look at Togaru. "You were saying, Kamakiri?"

Scowling at Setsuna, Togaru said, "...Shut up."

"Hey everyone in 1-B!" Itsuka called out, having stood on top of a table and waving both of her arms in the air to get the attention of her classmates, "Follow me! I'll lead all of us back to our homeroom in due order!"

Gesturing to Itsuka, Bondo said, "Wouldn't it make more sense for Midoriya to lead us, as he's our class rep while you're only vice rep?"

"In her defense, she did take action in this situation better than I did," Izuku pointed out, "Everyone else in 1-B, follow Kendo and I!" The rest of Class 1-B proceeded to follow after Izuku and Itsuka, eventually getting out of the cafeteria and making it to the safety of the Class 1-B homeroom, where the lot of them all waited for the news media invasion onto UA grounds to be repelled by the pro hero teachers.

...

Eventually, the combined efforts of the staff of UA was able to push the news media swarm off of UA grounds. With that out of the way, the UA staff proceeded to check to see where the news media could have swarmed in from. Eventually, a group consisting of Nezu, Aizawa, Hizashi, Sekijiro, and Ryo got their answer when they came across a large section of wall that looked like it had been eaten away at by some unknown power.

"If a news media member did this," Hizashi began to reason, "They'd only make it big enough for just themselves and leave the rest of the news media out, so as to try and gain a monopoly on scoops with All Might. The news media are a greedy lot who don't like to share the goods, not even and especially with their own kind." The loud pro hero folded his arms over his chest. "I'm calling it right now. This is the work of a villain."

"That's sound reasoning," Aizawa agreed, "And rare, given that it came from you."

"Oh come on, Sho," Hizashi replied, looking mildly embarrassed.

Looking at the decayed wall, Aizawa said, "But in the somewhat reasonable likelihood that this was the work of a villain, then what were they after? And why let the news media in?"

"To serve as a distraction, perhaps?" Ryo offered, "I mean, all of the students were panicked, and pretty much every staff member was occupied trying to repel the news media invasion onto UA grounds. It wouldn't have been difficult for a villain to sneak in and do whatever."

Sekijiro turned to regard Nezu. "Your thoughts on the matter, sir?"

Seeing that Sekijiro was asking him for what he thought, Nezu let out a sigh. "...That this could be a sign of dark happenings to come if we aren't careful. We'll have to post security here while we go about getting a hold of repair crews to fix this damage. We'll also have to up security for UA as a whole. The last thing that we ever need is for anything bad happening to even one student of UA."

Aizawa nodded grimly in agreement. "Indeed. I'd rather see myself hurt or worse than see the same done to any of my students."

"I was going to say the same about all of my students as well," Sekijiro remarked, "If it came down to it, I'd use my own body as a shield to protect one of the students I'm responsible for, damage to myself be damned."

"I'd rather that no one period be hurt," Nezu said, "But I can understand where you gentlemen are both coming from." It was clear to the men there that things would get heated in the future if they aren't careful, so they had to make each decision they made in covering things here carefully, had to make sure they all made the right choices. Everything that happens from this point moving forward depended on the choices that they and the rest of the UA staff made.

END, CHAPTER TWO

Author's notes;

This chapter skims over the events of the Battle Trial portion of things. There was no evidence (that I was able to find at least) that Class 1-B did their own Battle Trial exercise in canon, similar to how there was no evidence (again, that I could find) that Sekijiro had his class skip orientation in favor of running a quirk assessment test. Hence why I had Sekijiro send his students to attend orientation, although I did have him run a Battle Trial exercise here.

Speaking of the Battle Trial exercise, Izuku's not being in Class 1-A has already resulted in some changes, in the form of how the Class 1-A teams were set up and assigned roles, as well as also affecting who won and lost the Battle Trial exercise. Izuku's not being in Class 1-A will continue to have an impact on the story as a whole, but the impact will get greater and more... severe. Even more so in the next chapter, where the USJ attack will occur.
