Back at the tower the Avengers were nursing their wounds and hurt pride.
Bruce Banner teased Tony relentlessly about getting flipped off while studying a sample of web fluid they retrieved from war machine's suit.
The avengers were watching footage of the fight from cameras on their suits and discussing the strength and instincts of the vigilante. Romanoff, Clint as well as Rogers were reluctantly impressed. Steve couldn't believe that move with his shield and Natasha had a large bruise from that kick. Tony meanwhile was sitting in the corner quietly, shoulders hunched and seemingly deep in his thoughts. It was unusual for the usually chatty and annoying man.
Romanoff looked over to him curiously "Are you alright Tony" she questioned.
Tony snapping out from his haze looked over to her, his face softened, "Yeah im fine" he reassured.
He shook his head, his fist curled in irritation. "I just, that whole mission went to absolute shit, we really screwed up, I just really wished we were able to bring him in.
A "Sorry" came from Clint's direction. "It was a mistake I didn't mean to release the trigger, I should've waited"
Tony, still slightly irritated at the man, just nodded before sighing and looking away.
Steve walked over, squeezing his hand on tony's shoulder in reassurance. "It'll be fine Tony, we've learned not to underestimate him and we'll get him next time. This time without him getting hurt." Steve warned, raising his voice, looking intently over at the others.
The others nodded. Even Romanoff felt bad they had caused the man to bleed so profusely from his arm, he hadn't actually done anything wrong. Helping people in Queens where the Avengers' couldn't, their presence would just bring more trouble.
Still watching the footage they speculated on his abilities.
"Did he seem young to you "She asked the others. Tony and Steve nodded. They could remember the squeaking of his voice in shock and stuttering plus his responses definitely reminded them of a young adult, someone still slightly naive.
"I definitely wouldn't put him past 21,'' Steve said. Tony nodded in agreement.
"He could have just been intimidated by you know 'the avengers','' Wilson countered
Thor, Wilson, and Rodney seemed to believe he was older. To fight with that much confidence and against multiple far more skilled opponents the way he did they countered he must at least mid to late 20's
"I don't know," Clint said, `I don't think he was confident against us but rather felt had to fight. He seemed intimidated and was definitely frightened of being brought into S.H.E.I.L.D. The others nodded along. "Maybe he did escape from an experimentation facility or Hydra|? We'll have to see when we talk to him again."
The others considered this theory, going over the videos again and again while quietly thinking about the age of the mysterious vigilante and where he came from.
Minutes later the group was shaken harshly out of their thoughts as the doors to the communal room were flung open and Fury and his S.H.E.I.L.D team stomped in. As suspected Fury was Fury-ous with their absolute failure.
"This is unacceptable," he declared.
The others nodded slightly, ashamed at how they, the team who had saved and defended New York City had lost so spectacularly to one man.
"I told you to take this seriously, I know you think S.H.E.I.L.D teams are inept but they have skill, training, went in with proper planning and suitable weapons to be used against this man. And they still failed. You should have at least considered him to be a threat, you completely underestimated him. Instead of listening, TO-THE-PLAN" He shouted, slamming a copy of the file down on the table in the center of the room.
"You entered into combat in a Narrow alley, playing directly to his strengths, were unable to corner him and let him lead you to a chase throughout the city. This is a laughing stock to your positions as avengers. You're lucky no press witnessed this. Absolutely Pathetic. He spat. "I don't care if he is young, or that you like him, because he's nice to kittens and old ladies, do your job and bring him in, if you think you are even capable" he smirked. Rolling his eyes at the overly offended protest from Thor and dodging Romanoff dagger thrown at him.
"However" he shouted reluctantly. Silencing them. You did manage to do something right astoundingly. We were able to retrieve a blood sample from the roof where he was wounded during your final fight. We believe this along with the sample of the web fluid will give us important information on his potential identity and to the clues to develop a dissolving agent for his web, unless you want to end up pinned for hours like Mr Rhodes," he smirked to an enraged Rhodes.
"So hopefully there is a record of him in the databases so we can finally, without failure this time" he shot at them warningly, "track down and detain this 'spiderman'." The title left his mouth with a mocking disgust.
Banner and Stark were excited to learn about the sample of blood. Banner could study the blood and to see what mutations were present that could give a clue to how this individual had super strength and the ability to climb walls. He wanted to know if the ability to climb walls and webs was a mutation or developed by Spiderman and if so the chemicals needed to make this may give a clue as to how to find the man.
Tony offered S.H.I.E.L.D to use FRIDAY, the superior if he would say so himself operating system to check if the blood was registered to anyone in any databases and find the identity of spiderman.
Fury agreed appearing to leave, at the threshold however he stopped before turning around with a dark look.
"Please," he said with gritted teeth. "When you make a second, and final attempt at bringing him in, can you attempt to do this with him uninjured? We are suspicious and need to question him but don't want to actually make an enemy of an unknown powerful enhanced superhuman."
The others agreed, once again all feeling guilty. Well, all maybe except Rhodes, who was still bitter about being stuck to a wall while waiting for that webbing to dissolve for hours. They hoped the spider wasn't too injured. Bruce had theorized earlier that the enhancement was highly likely to also speed up his healing factor which had helped to alleviate some of their worries but of course, they didn't want to inflict unnecessary injury on the vigilante.
...
It was hours later, where FRIDAY was running the blood through multiple systems that a code written 11 years ago was enacted, the Milk bottle command had found a match.
Pepper, Tony, Steve, Bruce, Rodney, and others were in the shared living room later that night sharing a pizza and debating while watching the Incredibles which member of the family would win in a battle vs which avenger when the announcement was made interrupting their debate.
"Sir, as directed to inform you at once as per the Anthony Pete Stark Milk Bottle protocol. A positive DNA match of 99.92% has been found for 'Pete' Stark to Individual, Name: Unknown, Alias: Spiderman." A robotic voice declared.
Tony spluttered in shock for a second looking up at the ceiling barely comprehending the information or that the moment they had been waiting for had actually happened. Pepper began to cry. The world crashed around Tony and Pepper at the now revealed 14-year-old Vigilante's true Identity
