Although she spends a lot of time at Beck's house, Jade usually only spends the nights during the weekend when she doesn't have to worry about waking up and getting to work on time the next morning. It's easier for everyone, and no one's morning routines are disrupted.
Beck, however, and Aspen and Chelsea by association, spend very little time at Jade's apartment. While Beck will sometimes come over for a bit after work if Jade isn't already at his house, or might come over for a bit after a date, he's never able to spend the night there because of the girls. There isn't much there to keep Aspen or Chelsea entertained either; all of their toys are at their own house and there's much less space at the apartment for them to play anyway. This doesn't stop Chelsea from becoming curious though, about where her father's girlfriend goes when she isn't spending time with them. After asking very politely and batting her eyelashes in just the right way, Chelsea is able to convince Beck and Jade to let her sleep over at the apartment with Jade one night...just the two of them.
It's a Friday night, of course. Obviously the little girl's sleep schedule will be interrupted being in a different environment and Beck doesn't want that to effect school in anyway. So once she herself is done with school on Friday afternoon, Jade goes to pick Chelsea up from her after school program. Beck had already packed her a bag with everything she would need and dropped it off with Jade during lunch. The little girl is thrilled, she's never gotten one-on-one time with a female adult like this. Jade has been referring to it as 'big girl time' too, which makes it even more exciting for the seven year-old.
"Can I ask you a question?" Chelsea says as the two of them sit at Jade's table, sharing the pizza they had ordered for dinner
"Of course you can." Jade nods "What's up?"
"Why don't you live with us?"
"That's a loaded question." Jade chuckles
"What does that mean"
"It means it's complicated."
"Complicated how?"
"Well..." Jade sighs "I think the biggest part of it would be my lease. That's a contract I signed that said I would live here for at least a year and because I agreed to it...I have to pay the person who owns the building a certain amount of money each month. No matter what. So as long as I'm paying that money, I might as well keep living here to get my money's worth."
"So it's because you have to live here?" Chelsea clarifies "Not because you want to?"
"Did your dad tell you to ask me that?" Jade smirks
"No." Chelsea answers honestly "I was just wondering. Dad...he misses you when you leave. I can tell."
"I miss him too." Jade admits "I miss all three of you, actually. But usually most of the time we spend apart we're either sleeping or at work or school...so at least we have something to keep our minds off of missing each other, right?"
"I guess so."
"Hey, after we finish eating I need your help with something." Jade tells Chelsea "Are you up for it?"
"Depends on what it is." Chelsea shrugs "Is it fun?"
"I think so." Jade nods "I gave my students a test today...which means now I have a lot of tests to grade. Would you like to be my teacher's helper?"
"Sure!" Chelsea smiles "That sounds like fun!"
Jade's happy that Chelsea is willing to help, because she herself thinks that grading tests is the exact opposite of fun. Honestly, she thinks that having to give tests is stupid...she'd much rather have her students write essays, it's an English class after all. But tests are just as much a part of the curriculum as the essays are, and she has to follow the curriculum.
After they clean up dinner, Jade grabs the tests out of her work bag and gets herself set up on the couch. The tests themselves won't take that long to grade, they're all multiple choice and short answer, but putting them in the online gradebook will be the real pain in the ass. It will help her to have them sorted in a certain way, so any with scores below a 75% get set on the couch beside her. She let's Chelsea use one of her flair pens to draw stars on the ones that score between 75% and 99%, and lets her put scratch-and-sniff stickers on any with perfect scores. It's not much, but it saves Jade a lot of time and keeps Chelsea thoroughly entertained.
"Now I have to put the scores on my computer." Jade frowns "And that's kinda boring. I'll do that on Monday morning when I get to work."
"No more teacher's helper?" Chelsea looks sad
"No, not tonight." Jade shakes her head "But you were a phenomenal teacher's helper. So next time I need someone to help me, I'll make sure I let you know. Okay?"
"Okay!"
"Do you want to watch a movie?" Jade asks her "I can pop us some popcorn."
"Do I get to pick the movie?"
"Of course you do."
"Alright!" Chelsea grins "Let's watch a movie!"
"There are some in there." Jade points to the cabinet below her television rests on "A lot of them are grown up movies, but there might be one or two you would like. Otherwise we can look on Disney Plus."
Chelsea, who had already been sitting on the floor, crawls over to the entertainment center and opens the cabinet below the television. Jade watches as she pulls out DVD after DVD, confirming the fact that most of them are in fact more mature movies. Bridesmaids, Pretty Woman, Gone With The Wind, The Godfather, The Hangover...none of them are suitable for a seven year-old. Thankfully, Chelsea never gets to her copy of The Scissoring, that would definitely be hard to explain. The little girl does stop and examine one of the cases more closely than the other's though...it's Jade's copy of Casablanca.
"I think I know this movie..." Chelsea admits
"Oh yeah?"
"Yeah." She nods "Dad has it too."
"Have you ever seen it...?" Jade asks her
"No." Chelsea answers quickly "He says I'm not old enough yet...but he named me after this lady."
She taps her finger gently on the cover, identifying Ingrid Bergman's face.
"Ingrid Bergman." Jade smiles "I like her a lot, I think she was a very talented actress."
"That's what Dad says too." Chelsea smiles over at her "That's why my name is Chelsea Ingrid."
"She's a pretty cool person to be named after." Jade tells her "I'm jealous."
"What's your middle name?"
"Danielle."
"That's pretty."
"Thank you."
"Aspen's middle name is Taylor." Chelsea says "Like Elizabeth Taylor, not like Taylor Swift. Aunt Tori likes to tease Dad about that but he always makes sure to set her straight."
"I bet he does." Jade laughs
"When I'm old enough to watch this..." Chelsea holds up the Casablanca box "Will you watch it with me? And Dad?"
"Of course." Jade nods "That's one of my favorite movies, I'd love to watch it with you."
"Okay cool."
"Nothing good down there, huh?"
"No." Chelsea shakes her head "Can we look on Disney Plus?"
"We sure can."
With Chelsea spending the night with Jade, Beck has the opportunity to spend some alone time with Aspen. She'll be two in less than two months, and Beck can't believe how quickly time has flown by. It feels like it's only been a few weeks since he brought her home from the hospital, not a few years. She grows more and more each day, and Beck is amazed at the person she is becoming.
Of course, she's also starting to develop her own opinions as well, and she's a bit upset that her sister got to go and do something fun when she didn't. Beck is willing to compromise, understanding that the circumstances are a bit lopsided. Aspen is willing to settle for dinner at Grandma and Grandpa's, and Beck and his parents are more than willing to oblige.
"It's good that Chelsea is willing to spend time with her without you around." Priya remarks as they all sit around the Oliver's kitchen table
Dinner has been cleaned up, and Aspen is now busy coloring. She's very much distracted and not paying attention to the conversation, not that she would understand any of it if she was.
"Yeah." Beck agrees "I was a bit worried because back when I first introduced them she seemed a bit hesitant, but she came around very quickly. There was the whole thing that happened at Christmas, but Jade knew just how to make that better. She's so good with both of them...we got really lucky."
"So you see this as a long term thing then?" James asks him
"I do, yeah." Beck laughs "I wouldn't let Pen be calling her 'Mama' if I didn't?"
"Mama?" Aspen looks up from her coloring book and looks around the kitchen "She here?"
"No, Mama isn't here." Beck shakes his head "We're just talking about her. You'll see her in the morning when she brings Chelsea home."
"Okay..."
"Are you sure that's wise?"
"Am I sure what's wise?"
"Letting her call Jade that?" His father clarifies "I mean...what if..."
"We just remember what happened the last time." His mother chimes in "And we don't want to see you..or the girls..get hurt again."
Alyssa's leaving had been hard on both Beck and Chelsea, James and Priya remember it well. Although her relationship with Beck had been deteriorating for quite some time, and she had never really been overly maternal towards Chelsea...the realization that she was actually able to walk away from her husband and children without a second thought had been heartbreaking to them both. Beck's parents don't want to see their son, or their granddaughters, go through something like that again...especially now that Aspen is old enough to understand now too.
"This is so much different than the last time." Beck assures them both "Alyssa...she wasn't ready to be a mom...or a wife for that matter. Looking back, that's clear as day but-"
"But Jade is?"
"That's not what I said. Let me finish, please." Beck says "I know Jade had her reservations in the beginning, and I know that because she and I have talked about it. It can be very...daunting...to start dating someone with children and come into the lives of those children...especially when the other parent is absent. Jade might not have been ready for that, but she embraced it so well. And she continues to embrace it so well. She cares about both of the girls so much, and that means everything to me. I'm the happiest I've been, well...I think in my entire life."
"That's good, son." James exchanges a smile with his wife "It makes us happy to hear that. All we've ever wanted is for you to be happy. As a parent yourself, I'm sure you can understand."
"I can, yeah." Beck nods "In fact...if things between Jade and I continue to go as well as they have...I can really see myself asking her to marry me one day."
"Oh?" Priya lifts her eyebrows "Don't you think it's a bit soon for that?"
"I said one day." Beck reminds her "But, I don't know...this relationship feels so...right. I never felt anything like this with Alyssa. I think...I think Jade might be the one."
