Chapter 16

Amelia finished surgery feeling heroic, the tumour had put up a fight, but it was now excised, her patient should have a long tumour free life. Removing her scrub gear she checked her phone, finding a message from Arizona.

Police asked to update me, should be about 3 any chance your free?

She looked at the clock it was now 1800. She rang Arizona's mobile curious as to what the police wanted getting no answer. Knowing Arizona had Sofia she rang day care confirming she was still there. Frowning Amelia walked to Arizona office finding it locked but with the lights on inside. Checking with the nurses they hadn't seen Doctor Robbins leave her office all day. She car was still there, she rang her mobile and could hear it ringing inside the office, Amelia tried paging her but got no reply, but again could hear it going off, running out of options she paged Miranda and Richard.

Miranda arrived first, Richard moments behind,

"It's Arizona I think she is locked in her office, the police came to talk to her nobody has seen her since, I can hear her mobile and her pager going off inside"

"I have a key" Amelia moved out of the way so Bailey could use her master key and open the door. Going inside they shut the door firmly behind them. Arizona was lying on the floor eyes open tear tracks down her face. Amelia knelt by her side, stroking her hair

"Arizona? Are you okay?" there was an eye flicker, but no other response.

"Get me an obs machine, blood sugar monitor" Bailey ordered Webber knowing he would be subtle.

"Pupils are reactive, good muscle tone," Amelia reported, "Come on hun, wake up" she encouraged sensing this was more a mental breakdown than physical. She hesitated knowing what she had to tell the other 2 doctors but knowing her friend wanted to keep it under wraps, still they needed to know especially if they were going to be treating her.

"She is pregnant" Amelia revealed, both Bailey and Weber paused, shooting sympathetic looks to their friend, she had been through so much, was she strong enough to cope with this too.

"I'll call Natasha" Bailey suggested, as Richard returned, he took her numbers finding them all normal.

"Run some labs," Amelia suggested, she was pretty sure whatever the news that the police had told her was what had sent her over the edge but she wanted to rule out everything else first.

"Natasha is on her way" Bailey reported hanging up the phone. "Can we lift her off the floor?" she asked eyeing the couch a few metres away.

"Sure" Richard placed an arm under her back and one under her legs easily lifting her. She was lighter than she expected. He gently placed her on the couch, covering her with a blanket, she didn't move.

"Dim the lights" Amelia suggested after getting the bloods, "Arizona it's okay, you're safe" she soothed holding Arizona hand hoping Natasha got there soon.

"Take the bloods, cover my service" Bailey ordered Richard. Although Arizona had been okay with him in the past, he was still a man, and she wanted Arizona to feel as safe as possible.

"Also, can you talk to Callie or Meredith ask them to take Sofia home with them tonight, she was meant to be with Arizona, but I don't think she is going to in any fit state tonight" Amelia decided stroking Arizona's hair.

They sat in silence waiting for Natasha, Bailey holding one hand, Amelia the other trying to ground their friend and bring her back. The door opened and Natasha came in. It was clear by her dishevelled state that she had rushed in.

"What happened?" she asked,

"The police came they had an update on her case, she asked me to come but I didn't receive her message, when I scrubbed out, I came straight here and found her like this but on the floor" Amelia explained.

Natasha knelt by Arizona, Amelia and Bailey moving over to give her space.

"Arizona, I want you to take a breath, to feel the air enter your lungs and let it go" Natasha instructed. Coaching her through breathing, she could tell Arizona didn't feel in touch with her body, so it was trying to get her associating with the feelings she had. Arizona didn't respond,

"If she doesn't respond soon, I'll have to order an admission" Natasha warned worriedly. She wanted to avoid it especially as Arizona had been engaging so well with outpatient therapy and only had a limited time with her daughter, but they couldn't leave her in this state indefinitely.

"Come on Arizona" Bailey said stroking her hair out of her face,

"Let's try 4mg Lorazepam, we can monitor her here" Natasha suggested, trying to be Arizona out of her catatonic state. Bailey stood leaving the room as the chief it was easier to get drugs without anyone questioning her.

Walking down the corridor she bumped into Callie, since finding out about her dirty tricks at the custody trial, Bailey had ignored her. Not that that had really affected Callie who hadn't seen her since the custody trial.

"Bailey, have you seen Arizona?" Callie asked wanting to check on her ex-wife. Despite being fobbed off earlier she felt Arizona deserved to know when they were leaving and was concerned that she'd had a text from Amelia asking her to take Sofia for the night. Her gut was screaming something was wrong, something more than just the custody trial, and she had no idea what. It was frustrating how much Arizona had avoided her for weeks now, how was she supposed to know if she was okay if she struggled to even find her and when she did, unless it was about Sofia she got asked to talk to talk to her lawyer.

"Torres, you have a nerve" Bailey replied thinking of the catatonic woman she had just left. "You destroyed that woman," she told her, "As if she hasn't been through enough in these last few weeks."

Callie paused, she knew the custody trial had been rough on Arizona, it had been hard on her too, but that was the nature of custody cases. Something had been wrong then, Arizona would never give up custody just like that, not after talking to a lawyer, after going to court so what had changed. Her lawyer had said they were losing, that they needed something more, for Arizona to slip up on the stand. They had broken for lunch and Arizona had never returned. When she tried to call, she hadn't picked up. She had rushed to Meredith's house only to find that Arizona had been there. She'd pledged to herself that she would find Arizona today and force her to sit down and talk about everything now the lawyers were done and the custody case was over. Thinking back that wasn't when she had first noticed the change. Arizona had been acting weird before then,

"What has she been through Bailey because I know I'm missing something?" Callie asked confused, both by Arizona's behaviour and the distain her long term friend was now showing her.

"Why don't you ask your private investigator?" Bailey retorted storming off, remembering why she had left the office in the first place Arizona needed her.

Private investigator, what was she talking about? Callie stood confused not thinking to question Bailey until she had gone, what PI? She thought about chasing after Bailey but sensed she'd get nothing more, and once Bailey said no, she wouldn't move. The question is why did Bailey think she had hired a private investigator, did Arizona think the same thing? And why? What would a PI find that was so horrible?

Checking the clock Callie knew she wasn't going to answers tonight, she needed to get Sofia home and to bed. Tomorrow she would find Arizona and make her talk.

She collected Sofia from day care it was later than normal.

"Where's mommy?" Sofia asked, having not expected Callie to collect her.

"She is in an emergency, so I'm collecting you tonight" Callie explained not expecting her daughter to sulk,

"But I want mommy, I don't want to go home with you, your a stupid poopy head, I hate you I want mommy, I want to go with mommy, mommy needs me, you don't" Sofia said her eyes watering. She had spent the day thinking of everything she would miss, Zola, her school, her friends at school, Mommy, Auntie Melia and Meredith. "And I don't want to go to New York"

"What happened Sof? You were excited yesterday?" Callie asked puzzled, as they started walking out of the hospital.

"You said everyone was going, but Mommy isn't, mommy is staying here alone and sad, you lied" Sofia's brown eyes stared accusingly at Callie.

"Mommy has lots of friends here, she won't be alone, she has Alex, Amelia, April, Bailey, and Weber" Callie listed.

"But who is going to make her feel better when she is sad. Who is going to give her magical healing kisses? Or hug her when she wakes up crying" Sofia cried, she knew mommy was hurt and although her bruises were healed, she still woke up crying. Callie's heart broke hearing Arizona was still sad.

"Does mommy get sad a lot?" She asked, knowing it was wrong to use her daughter like this but unable to help herself.

"Lots," Sofia replied still crying. Callie bent down lifting her daughter holding her close.

"You can visit her lots and call her every night I promise" Callie said, "And she can visit you anytime"

"No, I don't wanna go, I want to stay here with Mommy" Sofia sobbed. "Please Mamma, please don't make me leave Mommy" She begged. Callie felt her heart break, she hated doing this to her daughter, but she saw a future with Penny, and Penny's future was in New York. In Seattle all she saw was ghosts, the room Arizona cheated on her in, the room George died, Mark. Joe's where she had kisses Arizona for the first time, the clinic room they'd nearly been shot in, she needed to get away. She needed to start fresh. Penny was that, Penny was a fresh start. Penny had no pain attached to her, things with Penny weren't complicated.

At the same time, she didn't want to upset Sofia, and hadn't expected this level of devastation not after she had initially been so excited. She needed to do a lot of soul searching and quickly, no matter what she did someone was going to be upset. Loading Sofia into the car she drove home, her mind spinning with all the information she had learnt and what it could mean. She knew she had some puzzle pieces but couldn't see the bigger picture which was frustrating.

She could just hope Arizona was in a talkative mood tomorrow and opened up, but the chances of that happening was slim.

Back at the hospital Miranda had arrived back in Arizona's office and gave the Lorazepam, they watched as her body relaxed and her eyes closed.

"Let's get her a bed for the night, I'll call the VIP wing" Bailey ordered. While it was fine in Arizona's office, she knew they couldn't safely monitor her there overnight.

"What are you going to tell them?" Amelia asked,

"Stress, dehydration, exhaustion?" Natasha suggested, "They'll talk and gossip no matter what you say" she said honestly, "So it may as well be a half-truth"

"Okay, stress and exhaustion," Bailey agreed. "Let's get her onto a gurney" she ordered, Amelia stepped outside finding a trolley carefully they transferred her across into the bed, each taking a limb. Removing the protistic placing it at the foot.

"Is Doctor Robbins, okay?" one of the nurses asked concerned, she had seen the Doctors entering and leaving her bosses office all evening and now seeing her being wheeled out her mind was racing as to what the cause was.

"Exhaustion," Bailey explained,

"Not a surprise, when she doesn't have that beautiful daughter of hers, she starts work with me on the night shift about 4am and doesn't leave until I'm back for the following night, normally about 10, 11pm." The nurse said, "And that's if she isn't paged for emergencies, Gynae, Fetal, Peds, even General, those interns just don't want to wake their own attendings, and since she is already here." The nurse trailed off. "I've been worried she has been pushing herself to much for a while, she never regained the weight from her gastro illness, and she doesn't eat much" She fretted.

"Maria, Doctor Robbins is a very private person" Bailey warned trying to be nice, she could see the nurse cared a lot.

"I know, don't worry, my colleague is on her break, the others are changing 204, I won't say a word" she promised, "Just look after her" she begged

"We will" Bailey said,

"Let me go ahead. I'll clear the corridors" Maria told them, she walked around the corner. They could hear her in the distance

"Jimmy what are you doing standing there, floor 3 needs sheets" She ordered, there was a pause and she appeared. "You're clear to the lifts"

Bailey nodded her thanks as they pushed Arizona down the corridor to the VIP suite encountering nobody else. The VIP nurses were there helping to transfer her onto the bed and hook up the monitoring. Bailey knew she didn't have to say anything about keeping their mouths shut, there was a reason they were allocated to the VIP rooms.

"Let's set up an IV, and an EKG" Bailey ordered. "I'm going to call this Detective Long and find out what exactly they said" she said, making Amelia and Natasha have no doubts she'd get the required information.

For now, with the fluids running and Arizona sedated there was little Amelia and Natasha could do other than sit and wait for her to wake up and hope that the catatonia was over, and that Arizona would be talking.

It was 30 minutes later when Miranda returned, to find Amelia sleeping on the pull-out couch and Natasha sleeping on the trundle bed one of the nurses had brought in. Deciding to let everyone sleep Bailey left with strict orders to page her when Arizona woke. Detective Long had told her that Graham had killed himself and she knew that was likely the trigger. Whether it was relief not to testify or anger finding that out less than 24 hours after finding out you were carrying his baby was a lot to handle. Bailey just knew that there would be a lot of talking once she woke up, she for one had working hours to discuss, 70+ hour weeks were a no go, especially now she was pregnant.

Callie is determined to find Arizona, will she manage it? Or will Bailey succeed in protecting Arizona. Will Arizona recover from her catatonia? Did you like Sofia confronting Callie? Let me know
