#ANewBeginning
Ah, bacon...
It was that smell that pleasantly attacked Izuku's nostrils as he made his way down to the kitchen, the crackling and sizzling of the cooking process being the noises to hit his ears.
Upon entering the kitchen, the first person he noticed was his Mother, Inko, standing by the stove with a spatula in hand and humming a jolly tune to herself. She seemed to be finishing up with the last of the family's breakfast as she scooped up the remaining few bacon strips they had with the spatula, sliding it on a plate that had on it a couple hashbrowns patties, a small batch of fried eggs and two half slices of whole wheat toast.
Before his Mother could notice his presence, Izuku snuck up behind her and reached his head over her shoulder to plant a quick kiss on her cheek, which surprised her as she jumped slightly. "Morning, Mom." He greeted, smiling warmly at the woman as he patted her shoulders. He then walked over to the square dining table that was close by to wait for his meal, seeing his Father sitting at one side while openly reading today's paper of the Daily Planet. Hisashi wasn't alone at the table as sitting by a side adjacent to him in her high chair was his baby daughter, and Izuku's baby sister, Eri.
Eri Midoriya was an adorable little creature who had short white hair that reached her neck and pretty red eyes, wearing a white and yellow onesie with little duckies on it and a white baby bib. Her tiny and slightly pudgy self was shy of hitting one years old, her birthday being a little over a month away. Now by blood, Eri wasn't a Midoriya, as she was actually adopted by Inko and Hisashi a few days after her birth, Hisashi having been good friends with her real Father before he had... disappeared.
Sadly, Eri's biological Mother passed away shortly after giving birth to her, and with the immense and agonizing stress of being a grieving husband and no doubt a single parent possibly weighing on him, Eri's Father couldn't risk handling such a responsibility while he mourned his beloved wife. He just couldn't.. So feeling that he didn't have a choice, he begged the Midoriya's to take her into their care, as he only trusted them enough to raise her.
Of course, Hisashi gladly took the infant into his family, as him and Inko were actually planning to have another child around that time. However, that didn't mean he hadn't attempted to give his friend the courage and strength to raise Eri. It just never worked.
About a week after Eri's adoption was finalized, Hisashi completely lost touch with his friend as he had seemingly vanished into thin air one day, leaving everything behind and not leaving so much as a warning message to the Midoriya's. He was just... gone.
Izuku always frowned when he thought of the circumstances behind Eri's adoption, but wouldn't come to despise her Father for everything he did. In fact, he was grateful. Because in the process, he did get one beautiful and happy little girl for a sister out of the whole ordeal. Now he just hopes the guy is doing okay, wherever he is.
So, as he witnessed Eri play with a tiny duck plushie in her hands while suckling on her pacifier, Izuku couldn't help but smile warmly. He felt proud of his parents for giving such an angel like her a chance at a happy life. As for his part, he is dedicated to do the same and become someone who she can look up to as she grows up. Someone who will always love her for who she is and be there to protect and save her, no matter the cost.
As he was to so many people already back in Musutafu, he will always strive to be... her hero. Just as a big brother should.
"Oh, good morning, sweetie." Inko said back to Izuku as she watched him go off, smiling after getting over her startled state. "Talk about excellent timing, I had just finished whipping up your plate."
"So I've noticed." Izuku replied, leaning beside Eri to give her cheek a kiss of her own. "Hey there, kiddo." He said to the white-haired tot as he moved to sit across from her.
Excitedly, Eri grunted upon seeing her big brother, her arms immediately flailing about as she wagged her toy around, having it by the arm in one hand.
"Well, I'm glad to see someone's so chipper this morning." Izuku chuckled at the reaction as he sat down before proceeding to give Eri some goofy faces and sounds to laugh at, which she did as she began giggling after spitting her pacifier out.
Inko herself giggled as she witnessed the scene, pouring herself and Izuku a glass of apple juice before doing the same for Eri, but in a sippy cup. Hisashi already had a cup of coffee by his side, so he was all good. "Oh, you know, Eri. She is always in high spirits whenever she's had a good night's rest."
"Fair point." Izuku stifled, ceasing his clowning as he placed his bag down by his feet and reached over to put Eri's soother back in her mouth. "Don't lose this now you." He playfully warned as he leaned back once Eri had resumed her rapid suction, still waving her arms and bouncing her bottom in her chair happily as she watched Izuku with bright eyes.
Izuku shot a hesitant glance over at his Father beside him, who's face and body was obscured to him by his newspaper. "So um... reading anything interesting there, Dad?" He awkwardly asked after mustering up the will to speak to Hisashi, putting in the effort to properly communicate with him just as he did a few minutes earlier.
In surprise, Hisashi's eyes widened as his reading came to a sudden halt. Do his ears deceive him? He wondered as he was about to lower his paper to stare at Izuku in shock, but stopped before he could reveal his face as to not look silly. He thought he'd have to be the one to say the first words for awhile, but in this instance, he's glad that he was wrong. He managed to play it cool as he cleared his throat before answering Izuku, casually so. "Mmm," He shrugged. "other than the daily article of Superman's latest deeds, no, I can't say that there's anything too intriguing going on in here." Losing interest in the paper now that his son was talking to him, Hisashi folded up said paper before placing it on the table. "Then again, that is just yesterday's news, so who knows what tomorrow's paper will cover for today." He smiled as he locked eyes with Izuku, giving him his full attention.
"Er, yeah.. I guess we'll have to wait and see." Izuku sighed, giving somewhat of a smile before turning his sights away. Normally, he'd be all for engaging in a lengthy conversation at the mention of a popular superhero, seeing as he's one of the biggest comic book and hero geeks out there, and a super as well. But, when it came to geeking out to his dad, it always ended up with Hisashi looking disinterested, or frustrated really, as he... well, wasn't a fan of supers. And uh... one can say that Izuku is to blame for that.. Blah! More on that at a later date though.
As things quickly got awkward after that, a humming Inko came to save the atmosphere just in time, joining them with three plates of their steaming breakfast perfectly balanced along her left arm, her other hand holding a small platter that carried the juices and Eri's baby sauce; apple flavored, of course. Honestly, the babe just can't get enough of apples. "Breakfast is served, my lovelies. Sorry for the little wait." Inko chirped, placing the platter down on the table before giving her 'big men' their meals.
"Thanks, Mom." Said Izuku as he grasped the fork that was already waiting for him on his plate.
"You're welcome, sweetie."
"Thank you, beautiful." Hisashi grinned as he gave his darling wife a kiss when she leaned to give him his food, a kiss that Inko gladly returned.
"Of course, my love." The Mother replied. She then moved around the table to sit across from Hisashi, taking her own plate with her.
Impatiently, Eri grunted as she eyed her delicious pasty meal, her hands slapping on her chair as if she was demanding to be fed this instant.
The whole family chuckled at the toddler's 'order', Inko being the one to obey her as she pulled the platter towards herself. "Oh, don't worry, child. I haven't forgotten about you." She playfully reassured as she gave the sauce a quick stirring and took away Eri's pacifier.
"You know, I think I'm starting to see just how much we spoil her." Izuku joked as he watched Inko feed Eri a tiny spoonful before digging in himself, the tot's mouth open wide to take in her treat.
"Careful, honey. Don't spill now." Inko cooed, making sure Eri's mouth wasn't dripping with sauce. Her focus was entirely on her now appeased baby girl, so she barely paid attention to what her son had said.
"I think I'm beginning to see it myself actually." Hisashi chimed in, taking a sip of his coffee. "Though I suppose we have only your Mother to blame mostly for that, eh?" He whispered to the teen with a grin, leaning slightly towards him.
Giving Inko another glance, Izuku stifled as he saw her nuzzling Eri.
"Mmm~! Tastes good, doesn't it, my baby? Yes, it does~ Yes, it does~" Inko giggled as she fed Eri another spoonful, Eri simply babbling on in baby talk as a response.
"You can say that again, Dad."
At that, Izuku and Hisashi shared their first laugh in awhile, quiet though it may be.
However, it was enough to finally earn Inko's attention.
"Hmm? What's so funny you two?" Inko asked with a confused look, tilting her head slightly as she wondered what she missed.
"Oh, nothing at all, my dear. Carry on." Said Hisashi after he settled. Izuku doing the same not long after.
"Dad just told me a little joke, is all." The teen said, waving off the woman's need to be concerned.
Inko was tempted to pry into the matter, but wasn't given the chance as once again, Eri demanded her next serving. "Oops, sorry sweetie." She apologised, getting back to the task at hand.
Even though Izuku and Hisashi were also guilty of spoiling the baby girl, they couldn't help but snicker as Inko always seemed to take it a biiiig step further. Not that they could blame her, because who in their right mind could deny the cutie such love and attention?
For the next few minutes, breakfast seemed to go by for the Midoriya men as they haven't forgot that they're on the clock, needing to leave very soon if they're to make it to their respective destinations on time. As for Inko, she didn't have to rush to do anything seeing as she's a housewife.
In the bathroom, Izuku was just about to finish brushing his teeth, scrubbing at his pearly whites for a few more seconds before spitting out the toothpaste suds.
"Son! You almost done in there? It's about time that we hit the road!" Izuku heard his Dad call, shouting with slight urgency.
"Sorry, one second! I'm just finishing up!" Izuku responded as he moved about with an increase in speed, cleaning his toothbrush before putting it away. Then, after a quick cleansing of his face, he took a moment to look himself in the mirror. Evident by his expression, he was a tad nervous as it dawned on him that the moment of truth was ever so near. And he hoped that whatever god was listening will help make this day go by smoothly, as everyone does only get one chance to make a good first impression.
"Okay, Izuku, you can do this.." He breathed. "It's just as Kacchan said last night, just get the hell out there... and don't be a damn wuss." Concluding his brief pep talk, Izuku picked up his bag from the floor and left the bathroom, closing the light on his way out.
"All right, I'm good to go. Sorry for the wait." Said the teen as he joined Hisashi by the door, who looked ready to depart as soon as Izuku was with a briefcase in hand.
"No worries, son. If we leave now, we should make it to the school with a few minutes to spare. Let's just hope traffic won't be so bad this morning." Hisashi uttered almost pleadingly, watching Izuku as he quickly tied on his favorite red shoes.
"Don't forget about your money for lunch, Izuku." Inko said from the dining table as she just finished feeding Eri, giving the satisfied tot her sippy cup before getting to her own meal, finally.
"Got it all right here, Mom." Right where his wallet was hidden, Izuku lightly patted at his left pocket. Now, before leaving, Izuku first had to do just one last thing.
So, as he approached the dining table, Izuku gave Eri a swift kiss to the forehead after leaning over her. "Wish me good luck today, Eri." The teen said with a hopeful smile. He seemed to have caught the baby by surprise as she looked around with cute curiosity, still sipping her juice.
"See you later, Mom." Izuku then gave Inko a kiss to the cheek before going back to Hisashi, who now had the door open and waiting behind him.
"Have a good first day, sweetie. I truly hope it goes well." Inko replied as she had leaned into the peck, returning to her breakfast when he moved away.
"Yup, you and me both.." Izuku muttered with a deadpan look, sounding dejected as that lingering anxiety within him threatened to rear its ugly little head out.
Without further delay, the Midoriya boys left their home, only half of them reluctant to face today's 'exciting' challenge head on.
Of course, what kind of husband and father would Hisashi be if he didn't give the ladies a farewell on his way out?
Well, thankfully luck was on their side this morning as Hisashi's earlier wish was granted when traffic showed to indeed be slow, the drive over to Metropolis High being a rather quick and steady one for the father and son. Albeit, a bit nerve-wracking for the green-haired teen amongst them.
"Well, here we are, Izuku; Metropolis High School. It's a pretty neat establishment for a public school, don't you think?" Said Hisashi as he pulled over in front of the large high school, looking out towards said school through the front passenger window, which is where Izuku was currently sitting.
Speaking of Izuku, he could barely sit still as he shivered uncontrollably in his seat, looking nervously out the window with his face lightly patched in sweat. "Um, Y-Yeah, it's n-not.." He gulped. "..bad." Further expressing his unnerved self, he tugged at the collar of his top and tried to maintain a calm breathing rhythm, but was having very little success. God, there just had to be so... many... people.. He dramatically thought as he watched his fellow students walk up and into the building one after the other, some teens even entering in packs; both small and large ones. His heart raced with slight terror as he could just imagine the crowds within the hallways.. He really wasn't forward to seeing it.
Hisashi frowned at the sorry state of his son, a sting of guilt hitting him as he knows that he is partially to blame for making Izuku feel as anxious as he is. "You think you're going to be okay there, son?" He cautiously inquired as he gently placed a hand on Izuku's shoulder, hoping to comfort him.
Izuku didn't seem to mind the physical contact as he didn't protest to it at all. In fact, subconsciously, he welcomed it, but just for this time only.
'Come on, Izuku.. Why the heck are you freaking out so much about this? I mean, you easily shouldn't be! For crying out loud, you're Spider-Man, damn it! You've been shot at plenty of times before, and you didn't even so much as flinch whenever that happened! So why the hell can't you face this with a clear head? It should be a walk in the park compared to all the craziness you faced back at home. Man, thank God Kacchan isn't here to see me like this. Or else she'd have kicked my ass out of the car and scream at me to man up the second we pulled up..'
"Izuku?"
Pulled from his thoughts at the sound of his dad's voice, Izuku shook his head and turned to face him with a startled stare. "S-Sorry, what was that, Dad?" He dumbly questioned as he glanced towards his shoulder at Hisashi's hand.
"I just asked if you were going to be all right. I mean, I knew from the get-go that today may be a tad... disturbing for you, but still, just thought I'd asked before I'm too late." Hisashi bashfully scoffed as he pulled his hand away from his son and rubbed at his neck, putting on an awkward smile. Normally, he'd loved to dive more into the issue in order for Izuku to go forth with at least a bit more composure, but sadly, time wasn't on his side at the moment. Which he made apparent as he briefly checked his watch.
Seeing the worry in his father's eyes, as well as remembering that he needed to get to his new job ASAP, Izuku finally managed to mentally slap some sense into himself, shaking his head again as a sliver of his rationality returned to him. It wasn't much, but it just so happened to be enough for him speak somewhat easily. "O-Oh, yeah. No, I should uh..." He looked back to the school with an apprehensive gaze, fighting back the gulp that nearly reached his throat. "survive, I suppose is the right word to use in this situation. Heh.. Guess I'm just suffering from a bad case of the 'new school jitters'.."
"That's... understandable, my boy." Hisashi sighed as guilt struck him once again. "Look, I know this is all going take some getting used to, especially on your part. Which, trust me, I know it wasn't fair of me to have sprung all of this pressure on you so suddenly as I did. And I am sorry about that, Izuku. Truly I am. But you got to understand that I just had to take this job. Honestly, I'd be a fool to refuse it. I'll admit, it was highly selfish of me to have taken it without consulting you at the very least. At the time, I just let my excitement get the better of me and accepted the offer without even giving it a second thought. Now, I know that it may take awhile for me to earn it, but I really do hope that you can one day forgive me. As much as I can bear it for now, I'd really hate for things to be like... this... between us for too long. I'm sure that your mother feels the same way.."
Midway through Hisashi's apologetic speech, Izuku's hair had shadowed his eyes as a blank - almost angered - look came over him. And even after he had finished speaking, Izuku remained quiet, though eerily so. Hisashi noticed, but stood his ground as he took a deep breath, steeling his nerves.
Understandably, there were some parts in his father's speech that frustrated Izuku to no end. And as much as he wished to vent a bit right then and there, it was neither the time nor place to do such a potentially hazardous thing. Especially when it's someone who's secretly a super we're talking about here.
So, to ensure that he didn't end up doing anything he would regret immediately afterwards, Izuku held back his stress as he opened the door beside him, suddenly feeling like he would enjoy going to his new school more than spending another second alone with his dad. Damn it, and just when things were starting to get 'okay' between them.
"Bye, Dad.." Was all Izuku had to say to Hisashi as he quickly exited the vehicle and shut the door, doing so with a slightly hard slam. Luckily, he was able to hold back his true strength, or else the car would've been up a good 90 degrees on the concrete by now.
As to be expected, Hisashi winced once the door was shut, feeling the car shake there for a second. He deeply sighed upon realizing how much he had pushed his luck, now feeling nothing but regret and stupidity. "You just had to poke the dragon, didn't you, Hisashi?" The man scolded himself as he smacked a palm against his head before putting the car in drive.
"I hope your day turns out well, son.."
Izuku walked only a few steps before he heard his father drive off, stopping in his tracks but refusing to look back. With a heavy breath, Izuku slouched as he brought his hands up to his bag straps, looking to the ground with his frustration replaced with sadness.
'It's like you said, Dad..' Before finishing that thought, Izuku first looked up to the school building before him. His lip now curved into a deep frown. 'This is all going to take some getting used to.. Although, it feels a hell of a lot more than just some..'
"Well, let's hurry up and get this day over with, shall we?" He said to no one in particular, chuckling weakly at himself for probably sounding like a mad man.
However, as he was about to resume his journey towards his 'new life', the sudden arrival of another vehicle had caught his attention, hearing the tires of said vehicle screech to a stop directly behind him.
Now, he wouldn't normally care to turn around for such things seeing as it's more than likely none of his business, but since he was on edge this morning, he couldn't help but become curious. And boy, he'll be glad that he did.
Turning around enough to look over his shoulder, Izuku's eyes slowly widened as he was greeted to a rather... pleasant sight.
As if time had slowed down for him, Izuku - who looked absolutely gobsmacked - observed as a petite young girl had stepped out of the back seat of her own father's vehicle. At least, assuming that the elderly fellow driving the car was her father.
As for the girl, she appeared to be the same age as the green-haired teen himself, though being a few inches shorter than him. She possessed a head of orange-red hair that about reached her shoulders, a pair of bright green eyes and a smooth peach complexion. Over a yellow top that had purple on the collar, she wore what looked to be a purple hoodie that had the ears of a bat on the hood, said bat hood pulled over her head. Then there were her dark violet legging shorts, thigh high socks that were a combination of yellow, purple and white stripes, and lastly, her yellow and white sneakers.
All right, now as the flow of time returned to normal, Izuku silently watched as the redhead looked up at the school after closing the door she came out from, holding onto the yellow straps of her own backpack, which was purple in color. Like him a few moments prior, she appeared as if she was seeing the school's campus for the very first time in her life.
...Wait a second..
"Don't worry, Pumpkin-pants. I'm sure that you'll find a new... clique." Those were the words that the girl's father left her with as he then drove off to who knows where.
When she thought she was alone, the girl slumped as she looked down to her feet in disappointment. Looking as if... she didn't really want to be there. Just like him..
Izuku softly gasped as the revelation was swift to dawn on him. 'Wait... is it her first time here too?' He wondered as he read the girl's expression carefully. Seeing as how his mood and expression were similar just seconds before her arrival, it was all only telling him one thing to answer his mental question.
Yes.
'I guess I'm not the only one who has to deal with moving to a new school.' Izuku thought as he watched the girl kick some pebbles. Even though it made him feel bad, a part of him was relieved to know that he wasn't the only one suffering from such a change in their teenage life. And he didn't know why, but he had a strong feeling that they shared a lot more in common than just that.
Well, that settles it then! With there being no time like the present to introduce himself to a fellow 'new kid', and his potential first friend in Metropolis, Izuku mustered up the courage to approach her as he decided to put Kacchan's advice from last night into action; don't be a damn wuss, nerd! Fortunately, with having been best friends with the spiky blonde for pretty much his entire life, he was used to her... ways of encouragement by now.
'Okay. Here goes nothing. At least this way, neither of us will have to go through this day alone.' The green-haired super thought as he stood up straight with a determined look, his fingers waving over his bag straps to adjust their already strong grip. Then, after taking a deep breath, he moved up a few steps before making his presence known.
"Um, hello there."
Upon hearing a male voice speak out in front of her, the young lady rose her sight from the concrete and gazed surprisingly at an unfamiliar green-haired boy, seeing him gently smiling at her.
Not wanting to be rude, she replied while putting on her own smile.
"Oh, hi there." She acknowledged with some pep in her voice, giving Izuku a little wave as she ceased with her slouching to look more presentable.
Izuku nearly chuckled at the girl's quick recovery. "Okay, I know this is going to sound... kinda strange of me to ask out of the blue like this. But, is it perhaps... your first day here at Metropolis High?" Izuku asked, getting straight to the point as to not risk making things awkward between them.
The girl blinked in slight shock as he had guessed her situation quite accurately. However, being the upbeat socialite she was, perhaps even naive, she didn't mind it as her smile returned and she nodded to confirm his suspicion. "Yeah, it is actually. How'd you know?"
"Oh, well, let's just say that moments ago, I was standing right where you are with the exact same look on my face." Izuku shyly grinned as he scratched at his cheek, leaving that as his answer.
Unbeknownst to the young web slinger, the girl happened to be quite the intelligent detective. So it barely took her a second to figure out what he was trying to tell her. When she did decypher the message, her face was quick to shine with glee. "Hold up! You're a new student here too?" She inquired as she immediately closed the distance between them, standing on the tips of her toes as she came face to face with Izuku enough to touch noses. Clearly, respect for personal space was the last thing on her mind.
Izuku leaned back as the redhead had leaned forward towards him, alarmed by her sudden spike in energy and confidence. A soft blush glowed across his face due to realizing just how close their... bodies were to touching. Despite that, Izuku gave a bashful reply, gulping quietly before doing so. "Er, Th-That's right.." He uttered under his breath.
"Oh... my... gosh!" Squealed the red-haired teen as she quickly laid off the poor guy, allowing him to take a breather. "I gotta say, it is a huge relief to know that I'm not the only one here who doesn't know what they're doing. I mean, I'm sure that I'd find my way around eventually, but still, I'm just... Aah! Happy that there's someone else here who's suffering with me!"
...
"You know, that sounded a lot better in my head." Hearing the inconsideration behind her previous statement, the girl timidly apologised for using such a poor choice of words. Of course, Izuku easily forgave her as he wasn't one to talk if he were to scold her for it, nervously admitting that he felt the exact same way when she had answered his question.
"So yeah, I couldn't take offense to that even if I wanted to." Izuku said as he shrugged off her prior rambling just like that, the two of them sharing a small laugh over their mutual feelings before he spoke up again. "Anyway, my name is Izuku, Izuku Midoriya. It's a pleasure to meet you, Miss..." As per usual when it comes to introductions, Izuku extended a hand towards the redhead, smiling more comfortably as he waited for the formal shaking of hands.
"The name's Barbara Gordon. But please, feel free to call me Babs if you want. All my friends do." As she gave her own introduction, Barbara gladly took the boy's hand and gave it a firm squeeze and a shake, her smile getting an increase in enthusiasm once she had locked eyes... with her new friend. Izuku's own smile did the same.
'Barbara/Izuku... What a nice name..' They thought in unison.
And thus began one of many beautiful relationships... between two heroic souls.
