This chapter took a lot longer to write for a few reasons. None of them I'm really willing to tell you, because it would spoil literally the entire plot of the fic, but let's just say I've been building the boneworks of my fic for a bit.
Anyways, time for a sidetrack…
My identity has always been a struggle for me to figure out. Throughout the 20 odd years I've existed, I have never really been able to settle into a niche that I feel describes me. Even now, as I'm preparing to study computer science in college, I'm wondering if I made the wrong choice. Programming is hard for me, no matter how much of it I learn. I wanted to be an astrophysicist, but math wasn't much easier for me back when I started programming, but now that it's easier, I kinda wanted to start going back to astronomy. Problem is, my scholarship for MSOE is already in, and now I basically have to commit to Programming, so yeah, not good. Doesn't help that now literature is starting to feel more enticing as well. Honestly, I just wanted to be able to make my own games, but now I've dug my own hole, and now it's time to lay in it. I'm too scared to talk to my parents about this, mostly because I'm in too deep to turn back now.
I'm always worried about my future and what it entails for me. The future in general is scary. So many unknown variables, so many things that could go wrong, and so, so many small mistakes that could spiral out of control like a butterfly flapping its wings in Florida causing a tornado in Texas.
Some may call me paranoid, some may call me almost schizophrenic, and who knows? They might be right. But it's a vast improvement from how I used to act at a younger age. When I was in middle school, this sort of paranoia was less under my control and much more outwardly expressed. Hell, I remember having emotional meltdowns because of any mistake I made on an assignment, or if there were multiple assignments assigned at once…
I wasn't very in control of my emotions back then. But now, I've been able to start controlling my anger and stress. It's been difficult, but I've been getting better, which is going to be pretty important for me when I'm living by myself after I move out.
Either way, let's get back to it, shall we?

This is an announcement to all members of the Ultra Recon Foundation.
Yesterday at 7:30 PM, we announced to all members that UTF-345 had gone missing in Primeval Forest. Recently, however, there has been an update on the whereabouts of the team. At 12:17 AM on 1st Spring's Start 4066, almost exactly 7 days after they disappeared, UTF-345's Connection Orbs suddenly reconnected with the Foundation's Nexus. After triangulating their locations, all three members of UTF-345 were recovered with little resistance and no signs of Alpha-1.
While none of the Members appeared to have life threatening injuries, they were all recorded to be in a coma-like state as well as being recorded as having brainwave patterns that suggest that they are dreaming.
They have yet to wake up, and as of this moment, have remained in a state of constantly dreaming. In an attempt to view UTF 345's dreams, one of the doctors, Musharna Actress, gained permission from us to try reading their minds to discover the problem. 4 minutes after entering their minds, Actress suddenly started acting psychotic, before falling into a coma, trapped in a state of dreaming similar to UTF 345's current state.

Actress: T-T-THEY'RE COMING FOR US! FOR OUR MINDS, FOR OUR SOULS, FOR OUR BODIES!
Actress: NOTHING IS SACRED, NOTHING IS WORTH THE RISK, NOWHERE IS SAFE!
Actress: GET IT OUT GET IT GET IT GET IT OUT GET IT OUT G-
(Actress suddenly collapses as some members are seen calling for help and begin carrying her away. Actress can be heard still muttering incoherently, even as she slips out of consciousness)
End of Recording
We implore all UTF members to take caution; if you come across any individuals experiencing a similar Comatose State as UTF-345 has been undergoing, contact us immediately; likewise, until further notice, do not attempt to read their minds telepathically.

Aeon Observatory

The Aeon Observatory.
Four years ago, it had been the home base for the Horizon guild, a group of guild members who were tasked with helping those around the Horizon Continent, and helping out with the jobs in Mystery Dungeons. It had been where Tessa, Shane, and Nero had started their adventuring careers.
Oh, how the times change.
Due to the fact that Mystery Dungeons didn't even exist any more, it, along with all of the other Guild Bases had been decommissioned. That wasn't to say they were demolished, no. For example, the Wigglytuff guild in Treasure Town was repurposed as a ginormous marketplace, it's halls having been expanded and refurbished after years of little to no improvement, in order to make it a place that sold nearly everything you could ever want. It was even combined with Spinda's Cafe to further enhance the shopping experience.
The Observatory had been refurbished for a different purpose, however. While Wigglytuff's guild had the pleasure of their guildmaster still being alive and still willing to run the show, the Observatory was an intermezzo without a leader. The previous Guildmaster, Metagross, was currently 6 feet under; they had gone completely schizophrenic in the last days of the Old World, and proceeded to gorge themselves on countless emeras, before stealing the Sun and Moon Hourglasses. It took the combined efforts of Gallian and Tessa to take them down, which itself was no small feat. Meanwhile, their still alive right hand man, a Braviary, retired, due to the fact that they found that they really weren't that good at being in a position of power.
That was one of the reasons why the guild had started the Aeon Builders. While Shane had restored most of the towns and buildings across the planet, there was still more than a fair share of places that were still in ruin after Shane's sacrifice. Then, there was the fact that all of the Mystery Dungeons had gone inert, which coincidentally opened up a huge amount of retail space for the once cramped populations. The need for construction crews was higher than ever, and would help pass the time needed for the planet to hook up with the Ultra Recon Squad, which, according to Seraph, would take at least 7 years, minimum.
Gallian had also decided that with all the Fallers from other dimensions and swarms of Ultra Beasts still swarming about, that for now, they'd start up a smaller local branch of the Ultra Recon Squad in order to help organize against any possible Ultra Space related problems that might crop up in the meantime. That was how the Ultra Recon Foundation, otherwise known as the Recon Foundation, was formed, with Gallian heading the small group in the meantime. Despite all there still was in terms of work related to the guild, the members had still somewhat gone their separate ways.
Doc Magearna had become a researcher for the Ultra Recon Foundation, and was focused on researching all the changes Shane had made to Ultra Space. There was Zephyr Sneasel and Komodo Hakamo-o; the two of them had set up a small traveling merchant business, where they'd travel across Ultra Space to find incredible items to sell. Gumshoos Bada worked on further helping construction efforts, Bruxish Darling worked in her newly built makeup salon. Comfy Cozy and Mimikyu Mina worked as staff members for a nearby nursury. Team Spectre worked as mechanics, Togedemaru Prickles now was in a relationship with Crabdominable, and Tsareena Queen and Arcanine Accra had started up their own restaurant on the Air Continent. Finally, Zeraora Seraph, Seperior Flamberge, Poipole Sticky, Houndoom Luxeria, Milotic Francisca and Dragonite Zan worked as members of the Ultra Recon Squad. Braviary Howdy had once been the right hand man to Metagross, but now they worked on the outskirts of town as a Post Officer.
While everyone wasn't as close anymore, they all still treated each other as one big family.
So when Shane and Tessa had been seen fighting a monster, it was all hands on deck. Everyone began rushing around the continent, desperately trying to find where the two of them had disappeared to so that the pair could get the assistance they needed to take this beast down. Given how big the monster was, and how the battle had only just started when they were notified of the disaster, they shouldn't have been too hard to find.
And yet, despite how fast Whirl and Blossom were, and despite how the entire town had pitched in, with Lunala Luna flying like a Zubat out of hell, Mewtwo Orion and Mew Mesa flying across the water like rocks on a lake, Tidus helping organize every water type into searching the seas, and Hoopa bouncing across the entire planet, no one had any sense of luck finding the two of them. It was like they had disappeared off the face of the planet. Even when Magearna Doc had tried to track the Connection Orbs that were attached to their looplets, they had no luck, their Connection Orbs were supposedly out of reach of the Pokenector.
So naturally, when they suddenly re-appeared on the beach in a state of disrepair without any sort of fanfare, the entire guild suddenly stopped panicking and started questioning what in the world just happened. There was time for that later, right now, there were alot of Pokemon that were injured, and so they were all rushed back to the guild and put under intensive care.
For the water type Pokemon that had fled the scene, it wasn't that bad, just a few scratches from the panic, nothing an Oran Berry couldn't fix.
Shane and Tessa were a completely different story.
It was not a pleasant sight. Shane's fur had been burnt off in some places, he had a high fever, his tails were covered in black crystals, and there were huge blisters covering his legs. Tessa didn't look much better, she had bloody rashes covering her entire body, her eardrums had partially ruptured, and there were signs of overexhaustion all across her now suddenly gaunt form.
For most mons, this would be a case of life or death, a case that would be a grizzly tale to tell around campfires for decades to come. For Tessa and Shane, it was probably the fourth worst beating they had ever taken, as Doc astudiously pointed out. They were given an electric smack upside the head by Seraph as thanks for their unhelpful observation.
Unsurprisingly, Pokemon all over town started panicking about what happened, and started to try to get answers on how Tessa and Shane were doing. The guild did tell them what happened to Shane and Tessa, however, it was decided not to give out the fact that the two of them disappeared and then reappeared. Everyone was already panicking on what was supposed to be a night of celebration, it would be best not to incite even further mass hysteria.
Pokémon were called in to provide any medical aid they could. Ephemeris was being rushed in from her current Ultra Space excursion as quickly as possible, the golden, gleaming Ho-oh was extremely knowledgeable in situations involving Shane's unique physiology. After all, they were the first Ho-oh, so their knowledge on the souls and of the energies throughout existence was unmatched.
Celeste wasn't too far behind them, her healing abilities were unmatched, being the former goddess of life and all. She not only could, but had healed Pokemon with wounds far worse, so helping them recover from these kinds of injuries was not going to be difficult, not after she'd healed broken bones, lopped off limbs, and even gaping holes. They'd be wide eyed and cheery in no time…

Gallian, I read the message Fenrir sent recently.
You need to visit Aeon Town immediately.
It's about your sister, Tessa.
She and Shane got attacked by some beast last night.
I think it might be another one of those Anomalies that Fenrir talked about in the recent notices. Some of the people who saw it said it somewhat looked like a Wailord mixed with an Araquanid. Once Shane and Tessa started fighting it, they suddenly disappeared, kind of like what happened with UTF 345, which was why we were unable to find them and help them until after they suddenly reappeared. We found them back on the beach with countless injuries and in an unconscious state.
They weren't that difficult to heal, but you can probably already guess what the issue is.
Gallian.
They're in a coma.
From, Celeste

Dreams are quite the somberstyrious subject. While many might say that dreams are merely harbrought about by Cressalia or Darkrai, this is merely a half-truth. Cressalia and Darkrai do not create dreams; they can merely trans-communicate to Pokemon by using dreams or nightmares as a medium. The truth is, no one actually knows why dreams occur, what causes their genesis, or why us Pokemon even require them for mentaleostasis. In fact, we have no idea why so many Pokemon even need to sleep. But there are some facts about dreams we have available to us at this time. Whenever a Pokemon is dreaming, you can tell they are dreaming by a few key biofactors. Their brain activity will exponentially increase, their heart's tempo will quicken, and the respiratory system's breathing will become rapid and fast cycling. However, the most telling biofactor is the rapid rotoration of the Pokemon's eyes, hence the name Rapid Eye Movement, or REM. REM sleep cycles tend to occur about every 1.5 to 2 sixty-minutes, with our body first entering REM sleep about 1.5 sixty-minutes after we fall asleep. But one might only remain in that first cycle of REM sleep for 5 minutes or so. Normally, REM cycles last anywhere from a few seconds, to at most 30 minutes. But currently, Shane and Tessa have been in an REM psychostatus for almost 12 sixty-minutes by now, according to my Temporal Somnolent Radars.
Gallian waited for Doc to finish their expository explanation, before turning to everyone who had gathered in the main hall. "Thank you, Doc. Now as Doc has just explained, Shane and Tessa have seemingly been stuck in a state of dreaming. While this may not seem that severe at first, when we take into account the incident that occured a week ago with Ultra Recon Squad 345, this presents an extremely dangerous situation. Shane and Tessa may be experiencing the same condition as UTF 345, which leads me to the following conclusion: "
Gallian stomped his foot down in order to drive the seriousness of his conclusion home, "We may be dealing with some form of extraterrestrial threat, one that invades the dreams and minds of people just as Void and Necrozma, Devourer of Light had."
There was an eerie silence that surveyed the room, before a few began asking questions.
"I don't understand," Bada responded, "do we gots another Void ta deal with now? Cause if so, count me outta that! I ain't bout ta get jammed inta another big blob a' nope and be forced ta destroy worlds for dah next Lord a Darkness or something."
"I did not say that Void has returned, or that we are dealing with something like Void. For all we know, this may merely be some new species of Ultra Beast, or simply a powerful rogue Psychic Type. But so far, from what we have seen from these anomalies and from the dreams they might be the cause of, there is the very distinct possibility that we are dealing with something similar to Void."
"I'm worried about Shane and Tessa, are they going to be okay? How are we supposed to wake them up?" a voice from the back spoke up; Selene the Espeon was a former explorer, having researched Entercards and Ley Lines in the past, before they were taken over by Tessa's mother, Lucario Prisma. After they were purified by Shane's first ever use of a Z-Move, they spent the rest of the time that Void threatened the world by helping Shane, Tessa and Nero save the world. After the Ley Lines were destroyed, they decided to finally retire as an explorer, and became soulmates with Nero soon after. Nowadays, she usually spent her time with Nero in a library built in Stellar Woods, one of the villages close to Aeon Town that were built upon former mystery dungeons. She could usually be found in the library either reading books to young Pokemon, checking out books to the visitors, or in rare cases, looking over and reading any books Nero brought back from some of his excursions into Ultra Space. However, when she had heard of what had happened at Aeon Town, she had come to provide assistance fast enough that even an Arcanine would be jealous of the speed she ran at.
Nero was right beside them, their fur ruffled, and a slightly nervous look on their face. Their nervousness betrayed the innocent, yet serious look they usually wore, revealing the younger, childlike side they usually didn't like to show. Nero had been created centuries ago by a Superintelligent Golurk with the somewhat unoriginal name the Illustrious Golem. Golem had created Nero through the use of alchemy, which was… a controversial art at its best, and more realistically, involved using sapient Unown as fuel, before jamming the souls of multiple unwilling Pokemon inside Nero so that he could become any type.
This had come with the unfortunate side effect of making Nero go berzerk, before being forced into a helmet that prevented this, the helmet itself having the wonderful side effect of causing him to experience incredible agony. This naturally resulted in Nero absolutely massacring Golem and his entire research team, before being sealed away underneath the waterfall caves the lab was built in.
It would take centuries before he was found by the Horizon Guild, where he would be put on guard duty normally. When Shane arrived, Nero was immediately somewhat aggressive towards them, due to the fact that Shane had a bit of Dark Matter inside them, and that Shane was also kind of a jerk towards them.
Eventually though, Nero was able to break out of his mask, which in his eyes, wasn't actually a good thing, due to his fear of going berserk. With a bit of pep-talking from Shane and Tessa, however, Nero came around to accepting himself and learnt how to control his powers without losing control.
During the battle with Tessa's psychopathic mother who was trying to reset the timeline to rid the world of all gods, Nero self-destructed in a heroic sacrifice, seemingly gone forever. Forever being about 5 hours tops, since Necrozma revived Nero in order to carry out their plans, and Shane recovered them soon afterwards. A few days of bedlam, world restructuring, and epic battles later, it was discovered that Necrozma did a pretty sloppy job in rebuilding Nero, and had accidentally made him into a miniature afterlife. Which meant that the spirits of countless dead Pokemon were bound to come out of his cheek bolts from time to time to put in their fair share. Currently, Nero was standing right next to Selene, waiting patiently for Gallian to respond.
Gallian, for the briefest of moments, turned his head downwards in an almost mournful manner, unable to give a straight answer. Fenrir responded in his stead, "That's the main issue. We don't know how to wake them up, or even if someone in this state can bewoken up. Everything we've tried so far has been met with failure. They are unresponsive to all forms of anti-sleep medicine, healing moves are ineffective, and they don't even show a response to Z-moves. But where it gets really horrifying is when one of our agents tried peering into their dreams, believing that the cause was somewhere inside their minds. She looked into their minds for four minutes before she suddenly just started screaming that "they're coming", before she fell asleep herself."
Ephemeris spoke up, her glowing form filling the room, "There's no reason to believe that whatever is attacking won't do it again. As far as we know, if attacks like this have happened twice, it's possible that it could happen a third time, or a fourth, and before you know it, we might be looking at the start of an onslaught across the planet, and possibly even beyond."
Gallian soon returned to his senses, looking back towards the former guild as he spoke, "Which is another reason why we're having this meeting. We have no idea how many of these anomalies there are, nor how they function, or how we even possibly predict and counter their attacks. There are a lot of unknown variables, and the more we know about them, the more prepared we can be in the event that there's another attack. Doc, I'm sending you the footage of the inciting incident that UTF 345 encountered. I want you to pour over the video and its audio to try and discover any traits we might have missed about the invaders we're dealing with."
Affirmative. Activating audio and video auto-scanners.
"Nero, Seraph, Sticky, Luxeria, Luna, Zephyr and Komodo, I need you to start keeping an eye out from now on when traveling through Ultra Space for any new anomalies. So far, we've only seen them here, but if they start appearing in other dimensions, it's likely going to get really bad really quick. If you see any anomalies anywhere on your travels, I need to know about it as soon as possible."
"Gotcha."
"The life of a salesman is never easy, even without extradimensional nightmares! We'll be fine, right Komodo?"
"Absolutely, my dude."
"Celeste and Cozy; I need you to keep an eye on Shane and Tessa's condition until Ephemeris arrives. If you notice absolutely any changes occurring, whether that be sleep patterns, brain activity, or even physical changes to their body, notify me immediately. We still don't know why this is happening, so there's the possibility that they've been infected with some form of mental or spiritual virus; which leaves the door open that whatever is happening to them might start infecting other people like a virus, as in the case of incident B-12. Until we know the full extent of what is afflicting Shane and Tessa, I want them under quarantine at all times. Don't let anyone into their room, and take every precaution you can to not touch them or let them even breathe on you when you're doing things such as keeping them clean and well fed."
"Got it; we'll make sure to use multiple wards, lock the doors, and keep them secured in blankets."
"Whirl, Blossom, Zan and I need you to start spreading awareness about the situation. I don't need you to start causing Pokemon all around the globe to start rioting, just start notifying every town of the current situation. We need everyone to stay safe and remain on the lookout for any signs of extradimensional threats such as the ones we've encountered. If these things are anything like the Ultra Beasts, it's more than likely that there's a lot more variety to these things than just a swarm of bugs or a steel plated Wailord with legs. If someone spots anything that isn't a Pokemon or an Ultra Beast, they need to inform us immediately."
"You got it."
"We'll do our best!"
"Darling, Francisca, I need the two of you to start talking to some of the other water type residents. Right now, the most we have are accounts of Pokemon that were too preoccupied with fleeing the jaws of death to get a good look at the monster. We need a more distinct description of what Shane and Tessa fought, so see if there were any other Water Types that saw the thing pass by them. Moreover, if you're able to find any remains, bring them to Doc so that he can analyze what these abominations are possibly made up of."
"Understood, I'll talk to Tidus and see if he has info."
"I'll start some gossip at the salon! You know how Mon's loooove to spill their brains out while getting a makeover!~"
"Accra, Bada, Flameberg and Rebecca; I need you four to start asking around town for any eye witness accounts on what happened last night. Ask if they found any weird materials after the attack, if there were any footprints left by it, what it sounded like, leave no questions unanswered and no stones unturned. Anything we can find out about these things could possibly become invaluable later."
"All right, we'll interrogate everyone! No evidence escapes the eyes of Detective Accra!"
"Dis is gonna be a long year, ain't it?"
"Everybody else, just remain calm and resume your daily routine. If I need anything from you, I'll let you know. Alright le-"
"Quick question."
Gallian's motivational speech was cut off just before it could finish by Rebecca's voice. Turning towards the back, he stared at Rebecca with a mix of confusion with a small hint of annoyance. "Yes, Rebecca?"
"Can you stop calling whatever we're f*cking dealing with 'things', or 'anomalies', or whatever other interchanging terms everyone keeps using? It's absolutely annoying."
Gallian hesitated for a split second. Did the Foundation ever give these things a name? Now that he thought about it, no one at the foundation had had the free time to figure out what to call them other than just 'anomalies'. He'd been busy with the mountains of paperwork involved in the incident, his mate Fenrir had been busy giving orders to main base in his stead, and the science team had been desperately trying to locate UTF 345, before being preoccupied with trying to find a way to wake them up after they had been found.
"Let's assume they aren't named at the moment. What would you call them?"
"A Menace, that's for sure." Rebecca stated sarcastically.
Damnit, does nobody know what sarcasm means in this world?
Rebecca thought as she trudged back into her apartment, having spent the rest of the day questioning Mons around town about the newly christened 'Menaces'. She could have given so many better names, like Stalkers, or Dreamkillers, or Nocturnals, but she just had to give a snarky remark first before her suggestions.
Then again, she should have known that the same retards that put 'Ultra' in front of everything they named would pick the stupidest name ever.
The rest of the day afterwards hadn't been much of an improvement- any leads they found went nowhere. There was Pikachu who had thought a hardened slushy mixed with z energy that had melted into a gold medal was a piece of a Menace; while the material did look quite alien, and had been able to stub one of her toes while the Pikachu 'accidentally' dropped it on her foot, it had been almost a complete dead end. Then there was the Ducklet who had been spreading rumors about a new Menace in town that lived in the sewers and was poisoning the water supply with sleep seeds; despite how baseless the rumor obviously was to her, Accra had insisted they check there anyway, which ended with Rebecca's entire wardrobe getting covered in raw sewage while battling an angry Muk.
Just another day in Hell… Rebecca thought as she tore off her clothes and threw them into the 'Wash with fire' bucket, which was already filled to the brim with clothes from her previous 'dirty jobs', from the mud covered dress she wore to the gardening lessons that Flamberg had taken her on unannounced, to the rain coat she had worn to the turf war between a rogue Blacephalon and a group of Electrode.
As Rebecca limped towards her bed, she considered taking a shower first.
Nah.
She couldn't be bothered to take a shower, or have dinner, or do literally anything. All she wanted to do at the moment was fall asleep and let Dreamland take her away for one more night, before she had to wake up back in her living Hell once more.
As Rebecca finally completed the marathon towards her bed, she simply let gravity work its magic and fell onto her bed to conserve what little energy she had left. She pulled her Kevlar blanket over her head, curled up into a fetal position, before forcing her eyes closed, hoping that tomorrow would be better.
It never was.
11:56 PM
As Rebecca slept like a stone, there was the subtle noise of her door opening.
Something crawled in through the opening.
It slowly crawled into the middle of the room, its form shapeless and silent in appearance.
As it finally reached the center, it seemed to swivel around, in order to assess its surroundings.
It brought out a strange stone, before proceeding to draw a circular sigil on the floor of the apartment, the patterns faintly shimmering in the dead of night.
It reached into its body and brought out a bowl, a bottle of glowing liquid, as well as other various trinkets, setting them up neatly in the center of the sigil.
It gathered up the various fabrics and pieces of cotton scattered around Rebecca's room, before it organized them neatly around it's workspace.
It slinked towards the radio on the side of Rebecca's bed and placed it next to the rest of the materials, making sure the radio was kept silent.
Grabbing some of the scissors, pins and needles from Rebecca's desk, it finally finished preparing all the tools it needed.
At last, it could get to work.
Using the scissors, it quietly cut the dresses and fabrics into the desired shapes,
Taking the pins and needles, it weaved the patterns together, until it was left with an empty patchwork doll.
Pouring the glowing liquid into a bowl, it soaked the cotton in its essence,
The cotton soon beginning to glisten like a nebula.
It carefully stuffed the doll with the soaking cotton,
With objects being nestled inside the cottony flesh,
Rebecca's radio,
Small glass beads,
And finally, a tiny, crystalline heart.
The doll finally completed, it stitched the chest cavity close.
Now, there was only one thing left to do.
It crawled towards Rebecca, bringing out a long, intricately decorated needle as it did so.
It slipped a Sleep seed into Rebecca's mouth to ensure that she wouldn't be able to interrupt this most sacred act.
Picking up Rebecca, it slowly dragged her inside the sigil, gently placing her in the middle.
It laid her into a sprawled out position…
Placed the doll on her chest...
Raised their weapon high into the air…
And ran it through Rebecca's chest.
The Apartment suddenly flooded with light,
Before fading just as quickly.
By morning, the apartment was completely vacant.
