Once in Fort Carolina, Matthew was installed into one of the bedroom. Bordon had agreed to lead him there, hoping his friends would also be there, but none of the patrol found lost people in the wood. He sat on the edge of the bed and felt his eyes filled with tears. A knock on the door made him gather his thoughts. Bordon opened the door and made his way inside with a pile of clothing in his hands.

"So, what will you do since your friends were not found?"

"I do not know yet. I was hoping to count on a good night of sleep in a bed instead of in the wood to make a plan, if it is not too much for your hospitality," Matt asked.

"Not worries, take the time you need. I might have a plan for you," Bordon replied.

"What is it?"

"I have seen you managed a horse and maybe you would like to join the Dragoons. You will be doing patrols and you may come across your friends in the surrounding area. You would be a great addition, I am certain of it. You would also earn a substantial pay and get brand new uniform and boots."

As he grew up on a farm in the Midwest, riding was the most natural thing for him. Bordon was right; this would be a good way to look for his friends and interview the soldiers.

"You are right, I can ride, but I can't shoot or fence. Am I still a good candidate?"

"With training, you will be a great value for the unit. I already have your first post. Get dress and meet me to the stables."

They shook hands and Bordon dropped the uniform he took the liberty of bringing him. With his extensive knowledge of the revolutionary war, Matt was sure he could manage to survive. He knew the outcome of every battle. He would figure out a way to make it to an officer, since the higher grade you have, the farther away you are from battlefield center.

Matt busied himself with the uniform and looked at his reflection in the mirror and sighed. He got downstairs and asked for his way to the stables, where Bordon was waiting for him with his weapons. He handed Matt a shining sword and 2 pistols, with everything he would need to reload.

"Matthew Brown, meet Captain James Wilkins. He is also a new recruit and you will be working together tomorrow."

"May I inquire what the post is?"

"Tomorrow, the Sutherlands are hosting a ball and you will be patrolling around, making sure no unwanted continental guests will show. Normally, those guards are relatively simple so you will manage without any problem. Colonel Tavington will be attending, so I will try to introduce you to him," Bordon stated.

"We leave today for the manor and I will help you work on your fighting and shooting skills from there," Wilkins added.

Bordon took his leave and both men straddled their horses. Matt asked multiples questions to Wilkins all the way to Sutherland's Manor. He tried his best to remember everything relevant to his future article. Wilkins was of good company. Matt felt his answers were honest; since he was also a new recruit, Wilkins didn't have to impress him.

Time flew by really quickly and they got to this beautiful plantation. Matt could not believe his eyes and understood how much influent the Sutherlands must be to have a house this huge. He looked twice, and it came back to him; this was the location Maggie had rented for the wedding. He remembered the photos she kept on posting on her Facebook page. He smiled widely and followed Wilkins to the stables. He was looking forward to learn how to fight, but was in no hurry to be in battle. Guarding post was just fine with him for now.
