Annabeth was freaking out. Of course, she couldn't show anyone that. She, and Percy (much to ol' Flameo's regret) were led, handcuffed, into a small room. Percy wasn't bleeding anymore, so that was a plus. Annabeth guessed that when that old woman kissed him he was healed.
They were in an interrogation room. Annabeth had seen enough cop media to recognize the layout. The table with a bar in which her left hand was cuffed, the uncomfortable metal chairs, the mirror at the end of the room, clearly a one sided window. And a door. Which she was staring at intently.
She didn't bother to look at the mirror. Half an hour, maybe a full one passed. She was scared. They were in an extremely foreign environment. What were the creatures that walked the streets here? Were they even human? They didn't seem to be hostile, they hadn't touched her. But why had Percy freaked out? Did he instigate the fight, or had someone tried to hurt him? She wouldn't put it past him that in the obviously concussed and delusional state he could have panicked. Maybe he ran into one of the mutants that looked like a monster. How did he get there? How did she get there? Was this divine interference? She had already determined it wasn't a dream. Probably.
She prayed to her mom. But something felt off. She somehow knew she wasn't going to get a response. Was her mom ignoring her? Was she even able to reach her in this strange place? Were they even on earth? She guessed that the dialect everyone was speaking was an eastern Asian language, probably Japanese. What was Piper doing? Was it just them three? What h-
She was so lost in her thoughts and questions she nearly had a heart attack when the door opened. A man, completely human as far as she could tell, walked in. He looked her up and down with a blank face.
"-?" Annabeth just stared at him. She was frustrated. She couldn't understand. The man sighed and adopted a pained expression. He turned over his shoulder and gestured for someone to come in.
Thankfully, it wasn't another mutant. It just seemed to be an average woman, save for the neon green hair. That's fine. People dye their hair. Her ears were rather large, but Annabeth wasn't one to judge. The woman seemed hesitant, nervous, almost fearful. The woman's gaze lingered on the unconscious form of Percy. Ah. Annabeth tried her best to smile reassuringly to the woman, but the man beat her to it.
A few words were exchanged, then the woman slowly approached Annabeth and placed a hand on her arm. Even though the movement was slow and deliberate, Annabeth had to fight the urge to flinch away.
A beat passed.
The woman nodded at the man, and sulked to the corner, staying as far away from the trio as possible.
"Miss?" Annabeth snapped her head back to the man. She could understand him!
"I take it you can understand me?" Annabeth felt like she was going to cry in relief.
"Yes! Can you understand me?" the man nodded. Annabeth sighed, and relaxed her shoulders. And then she tensed again. Shit. She had no idea what she was going to tell these people. This world, or wherever they were, was beyond the gods and extremely confusing. And different. Very different. Annabeth wondered if she even had a file that this man could access. He had some kind of paper in his hands. This was a foreign country, that much she knew. But she couldn't start asking questions yet. She needed more.
The man continued, "My name is Tsukauchi. I'm a detective of the Musutafu police department. I've been elected by the Hero Commission to question you. My quirk, my ability, is to compel people to tell the truth. You cannot lie to me, miss."
In his introduction, Annabeth realized four things. One, they are almost definitely in Japan. But that city doesn't exist, and has never existed. So that rules out simply being in a different country. They were either in the future, or a different universe. Both seemed unlikely, but if they were dealing with a divine force, anything was possible.
Two, this guy just admitted to having an ability. A quirk, as he called it. And if Annabeth's guess was right, that woman definitely had an ability that made them be able to speak to each other. She wondered if it was necessary. She distantly remembered her and Percy defaulting to Ancient Greek. Did they have English here? They had Japanese, as far as she could tell.
Three, Annabeth would have to wing lying. She wasn't sure how well his ability worked, but if she could get away with open ended questions and answers, she would be set. She prayed this guy wasn't that smart.
Four, they were in deep shit. This was the police. She though of all the different possibilities of lies she could tell, but she didn't know enough. So she decided to take that to the extreme.
"Hello, mister," she said tentatively. "I, uh, I'm Annabeth." Truth.
The man eyed her, then wrote something down.
"That's a foreign name. How about a last? Family name?"
Annabeth tried her best to seem distraught and apologetic.
"I don't know." Truth, she had already renounced her last name, Chase. An official falling out with her old family. But she didn't quite know if she wanted to be Jackson quite yet.
The man wrote something down.
"Where are you from, Annabeth?"
She bowered her head.
"I don't know." Truth, while she knew the general idea of how she was born, she didn't know any of the specifics. Like where exactly she popped out.
She let the weigh of her situation catch up to her, and used it to start crying. It wasn't even that hard. She was mad. She was frustrated. Why is this happening to them? She and Percy were just about to settle down. Why now? She was sobbing openly.
The man seemed to scramble, and pushed his notepad aside.
"Miss, can you remember anything?"
Annabeth looked up at him, eyes watery and vision blurry.
"No." Lie. Huh.
Endeavor scoffed. That's awfully convenient.
"That's awfully convenient," Midnight said, voicing his thoughts. As much as Endeavor hated the R-Rated hero, it was smart to have her around. Her quirk would be perfect to containing the boy quickly if he started up again. But that was a future problem. The one they had right now was the girl.
Principal Nezu hummed delightedly in the corner. They all watch as the girl, Annabeth, took up the story from there, saying how she fell from the sky and hurt her head. She saw this girl, a pretty girl, that she recognized. Before said girl could even say her name, Annabeth knew it. Piper. Both of them had no idea where they were from, what they were doing, or how they got there. All they knew were each other's names, and a few other. One of them being Percy, she gestured to the boy.
"All foreign names," Endeavour pointed out. "American, maybe, or British."
Nezu squeaked, "They were speaking an ancient dialect of Greek! The boy certainly has the bone structure to support that claim. But as for the other two..." Nezu's rodent eyes glazed back into thought.
"Maybe they were kidnapped? Memories wiped?" Midnight paused, she seemed uncomfortable, "maybe trafficked? That boy had a really strong quirk. Multiple, actually."
Endeavour sighed. He didn't want to sympathize with the boy. This was supposed to be a clean, one-and-done deal. Of course not. And then the rat had to get involved.
The detective sighed after Annabeth finished her story, and walked out, meeting the three back in the observation room.
"We will leave further investigation to the police! As for the children, I shall make arrangements for them. I suggest a guarded hospital room for the boy and Piper. I will speak to Annabeth about the others she mentioned. This is so exciting!" Endeavour didn't even want to respond. Picking a fight would mean being here longer. But Midnight just had to drag it out.
"Sir, are you seriously suggesting-"
Nezu cut her off. "I see potential, Miss Kayama! The girl is obviously very bright indeed, and the raw power of the boy! Don't you all agree it would be best for him to have a more, let's say, righteous hand in his upbringing?"
No one argued with that.
Endeavour sighed. He needed to up Shoto's training.
Annabeth sighed. She was alone in the room now, the detective man and the other woman were gone.
She didn't know if mentioning others was a good idea, but she had to try. The three of them came here for a reason. If it was just Annabeth and Percy, she wouldn't have said anything. But Piper being there complicates things. She knew it was likely the others of the seven were there, too. Having police help to find them would be beneficial for now, but might be tricky later. She was contemplating what the actual hell they were going to do when the rat came in.
Annabeth did a double take. She really wished Percy was awake right now, that way she could have someone to confirm she wasn't going crazy. The detective came to save the day, though.
"Is- Is that a-"
"I'm going to stop you before you ask something quite insensitive, Miss Annabeth. I am Principal Nezu." The rat? chuckled. Mr. Tsukauchi just gave her a look to not say anything more. She filed away the principal bit, though.
"Now, Miss Annabeth. About your friend here-"
"What about Percy?" Annabeth snapped. She realized that she needed to keep up an innocent act, but she really didn't want to be separated right now.
"He needs medical attention, Miss," Tsukauchi interjected. Nezu nodded, and picked back up.
"I understand you don't want to part with your companion, but your other Musketeer, Piper, was it?" Annabeth nodded hesitantly, "Will be accompanying him. She also requires some professional treatment. Do not worry! She's near perfect health, simply unconscious. It's most likely the stress. They'll be moved to a secure hospital, and let me assure you," He placated Annabeth before she could argue, "We are more concerned about someone trying to break in than him trying to break out."
Annabeth gave him a confused look. Nezu took it as an incentive to continue, "We are concerned you're coming from a quirk trafficking ring. Your friend there seemed pretty powerful. We can only guess how he managed to come across such abilities."
Annabeth nodded along. Okay, so people with strong quirks are trafficked. Meaning there are usually weaker quirks. Meaning that almost everyone here has one. But she didn't. Annabeth sighed. If they discovered that she didn't have any elemental powers like Jason or Percy, or situational powers like Piper, they would unravel that excuse quickly. And it was a convenient one. Perhaps increased IQ? She had endurance, more so than regular humans. She was still part god, even if she didn't have insane weather abilities. She wondered if there were simple enhancement quirks. Yeah, she would go with that for now.
"Might I ask, what is your quirk?" Annabeth was suddenly glad she had that line of thought so soon. She was flying by the seat of her pants, here.
"Um, I don't really know. I mean, I don't want to be like conceited here or anything-" She continued her innocent little girl act as long as she can. It helped that her body seemed to be younger, as well. She hadn't quite registered that yet.
Nezu interrupting her simultaneous thought and speech. "I assure you, Miss Annabeth, there is nothing conceited about admitting your strengths." He gave her a look to continue.
"I- I think increased IQ? I remember... tests? I'm not sure. And strength, enhanced strength." She gestured to the metal bar that ran along the table for permission. Tsukauchi seemed hesitant, but Nezu override him with a quick nod.
Annabeth shuffled her handcuff aside and gripped the bar. She was expected to flex a little bit more, but the bar bent like butter under her hand.
Nezu thought for a moment, "I wonder... Detective Tsukauchi, if you please?" He motioned for him to unlock her handcuffs. Annabeth put on another sheepish look. Tsukauchi sighed and pulled out a key.
"Try to lift Detective Tsukauchi, Miss Annabeth."
"What?!"
"Um... what?"
Nezu had a gleam in his eyes. "You understood my directions clearly. Please, humor me, Miss." The mischievous rodent stepped aside.
Annabeth slowly got up, avoiding eye contact with Tsukauchi until the last minute. Then, with a final questioning look, he nodded. Annabeth wrapped her hands around his midsection and lifted.
Wow. She knew her strength, and this was definitely not normal for her. She hid any ounce of surprise in her face as she set the man back down.
Nezu squealed in delight and clapped, "Excellent! I wonder what you could do with more equipment!"
"More... equipment?" Annabeth was confused. Tsukauchi sighed.
"I'm gonna get the boy to the hospital. Miss Annabeth, know that you don't have to say yes. But it seems to be the only option immediately available."
That just left Annabeth even more confused. She went to sit back down as Tsukauchi carried Percy's small body bridal style out the door. She looked at Nezu.
"How would you like to attend a school for heroes, Miss Annabeth?"
