The Watcher looked down as Peter and Barry have just returned to STAR Labs after stopping a motorcycle duo from getting away with almost a million dollars in jewelry.
"Give me some!" Cisco shouts from his chair as they both give him a hi-5.
"Efficiently done, Mr. Allen and Mr. Parker," Wells tells the two heroes.
"We need a picture." Cisco states and runs off to find a phone.
"I'm pretty sure rule number one of having a secret identity is not taking pictures of yourself in your super-suit with the mask off," Barry informs his friend.
"Come on, it's not like anyone else is gonna see it," Cisco compromises.
"Who knows? Maybe people in the future will want to know how all this happened." Wells agrees with Cisco.
"All right, Well, if you want the future to have the whole story, we all need to be in it." Barry finally agrees and looked to the other room. "That means you, Iceman."
"Sweet," Bobby said as he walked over to join them. "Come on, Cait."
"First, let me put in some makeup?" Caitlin asks not feeling like she looks her best.
"Cait, come on, you look fine," Barry informed her.
"Besides, it's not like anyone over a hundred years from now will care about your makeup." Cisco scoffed at his friend and got into position.
Cisco was on the left of the group while Caitlin was on the right, Wells in the middle, and Peter and Bobby were in between Caitlin and Cisco. Barry has the camera up and is ready to take it. As soon as he pushes the camera button, he zooms over to Wells' right side and the picture gets taken and he speeds over before the camera has time to move.
"Does that count as a selfie?" Caitlin asked curiously. She had recently discovered the selfie button through Bobby and had been starting to take an awful lot of them by accident.
"Sweet!" Cisco cried, peering at the picture.
Caitlin huddled over his shoulder and didn't like how her hair looked. "My hair's all messed up."
"You look fine." Cisco groaned.
"Yeah." Barry smiled. "You do." There was silence in the Cortex for a moment.
Caitlin looked away and blushed as she fixed a bit of hair out of place. "Thanks." She then started to hurry and grab her purse. "How about I get all of us coffee?" She ran out of the room before anyone could answer. "I'll be back.
The sound of squeaking sneakers filled the room as Cisco turned on his toe. "Alright. What was that?"
"What was what?" Barry asked innocently.
"What was that... look that you gave her? With those moony eyes?"
"I don't know what you're talking about." Barry denied it with a calmness that Dr. Wells would be proud of.
Peter and Bobby just smiled and walked off, both of them knowing exactly what was going on between them. But they weren't the type of people to spoil the fun by telling everyone about it. But the two of them had something much bigger that needed to be taken care of.
Finding out who the Green Goblin is.
Peter and Bobby walked into the back rooms where they had brought everything to do with the Goblin. All the weapons he has given the criminals over his time, all the criminals that he has been associated with. This included Molten Man, Shocker, the creation of the Sinister Six squad, and Captain Cold.
"Okay, this is everything that we have on Goblin," Bobby tells Peter. "Now what?"
"We retrace everything back to the source," Peter said as he looked at the timeline. "First, the particle accelerator exploded."
"Which is probably what created him," Bobby said as he opened a pizza box before taking a slice.
"Then after a month, I started my crusade," Peter remembered as he gestured to when he made his appearance on the timeline.
"Then came the bad guys," Bobby gestured to the criminals with powers.
"First it started with Max becoming Electro," Peter said as he still kept his eyes on the timeline. "Then it came down to Herman turning into Shocker. Mark turning into the Molten Man. Connors turning into Lizard was my fault. But then..." Peter went over to the headline of the Goblin attacking the prescient. "He shows up. Terrorizes me, offers me the chance to join him, as well as take over the city."
"You decline, so he tries to kill you," Bobby said as he took another bite from the pizza.
"Then everything after that, it has been one villain after another," Peter said as he followed Spot, Cold, Doc Ock, White Tiger appearance, everything to today. "Why? Because I hurt his feelings?"
"What if that actually is the reason?" Bobby asked him. "He asked you to join him, you don't take his offer and he sends these criminals after you."
"Right. We established that." Peter reminded him.
"But you forgot a part of it," Bobby said as he walked over and pointed to the police attack. "That's when he started his reign against you. The criminals before were there to stop you. Defeat you." Then he pointed to after the attack. "Everyone afterward was stepping up their game. That was when he decided to kill you."
"You think that Goblin was actually testing me beforehand?" Peter asks him.
"Either testing or was taking it easy on you." Bobby shrugged at those being two possibilities. "Either way, I think you're hurting him."
"But who am I hurting?" Peter asks, looking at everyone here. "Who has the resources and the most to lose from my interference?"
Later on that night, Wells makes it to his home and seeing he's alone, gets out of his wheelchair. Trying to keep his secret is easy when around the team but hiding the Speedforce from Peter's senses was just as tricky. Yet when he's alone, he doesn't need to worry about it.
What he didn't see was what was happening at his home when his phone began to ring.
"Hello?" Wells asks into the phone.
"We both know what you did." The voice says and Wells hangs up and looks around. "It's time to pay the piper." The voice states through his home speakers and his glass roof start shattering he uses his speed to escape it as more blasts come in and destroy more glass.
The next morning, Barry was at Wells' house with the CCPD showing up after what happened. Right now, he was waiting for Cisco and Caitlin to arrive, and watching the police investigate the crime scene.
"Come in." Wells greets them. "Look, Joe, I apologize for all of this. It really feels like a case of so much for so little. The police shouldn't have been called. I got a prank call before this happened."
"This feels like more than a prank, Doctor," Joe states seeing the glass shattered covering up across the floor.
"Well, there are those who feel I did not suffer enough for the particle accelerator explosion of last year, and some of them act on it," Wells explains when Cisco, Caitlin
Because Dr. Wells' house was now also a crime scene. Someone had smashed the glass of his sunroof. Thankfully Harrison hadn't been hurt.
"This place is sweet." Cisco breathed, coming in with Caitlin.
He was relieved to see both of them. Ever since Caitlin had been kidnapped by Snart, he had been on high alert, expecting at any second to get a call that one of them had been kidnapped. "What took you guys so long?"
Caitlin and Cisco exchanged one of those significant glances that all best friends seem to have mastered.
"We got lost," Cisco admitted.
"We've never been here before." Caitlin shrugged.
"Really, never?" Barry was shocked.
"He tends to keep his private life private," Caitlin told him.
Cisco walked off, still looking around in amazement, and Barry (after looking around quickly), kissed Caitlin. She grinned. "What was that for?"
"Well, I haven't kissed you yet today." Barry shrugged and thought it was a plausible excuse. "And I wanted to."
Caitlin smiled as she lightly hit his shoulder. "You're ridiculous, Mr. Allen. So, who do you think did this?"
"No idea." Barry shrugged. "But whoever tried to hurt Dr. Wells is going to hear from me."
"I canvased the street," Eddie tells Joe as they leave the group. "No other reports of vandalism. No strange cars. Get this, Wells says he's right there when it happened. All that glass shattering down around him and he can't walk?"
"There's not a scratch on him." Joe states seeing something doesn't add up.
Barry was currently using his speed to place all of the glass back together to find something and there was nothing to find.
"There's no point of impact," Barry tells Wells as he rolls in behind him. "No rock or bat or any solid object went through these windows. It's as if they shattered themselves."
Barry then turns around and sees Wells' face. Something about it told him that he knew more than he was letting on.
"This wasn't some prank, was it?" He asks Wells and he agrees. "You don't want our help. Why?" Barry wonders.
"Because I already know who did this," Wells explains. "Hartley Rathaway. Better gather the others and get to STAR Labs." Wells states and leaves.
"Wait, Who's Hartley Rathaway?" Barry asks, not knowing the man.
"He's the protocol son...and he has returned." Wells states.
At STAR Labs, they're all filled in on who exactly Hartley Rathaway is. Seems he was Wells' Star pupil before the explosion.
"Hartley Rathaway possesses one of the finest scientific minds I've ever encountered." Wells starts explaining.
"Any ties to Rathaway Industries?" Joe asks seeing the familiar name.
"His grandfather founded the company, his father expanded it, and Hartley here was set to inherit the throne," Wells explains to Joe seeing he's right.
"What happened?" Barry asks them.
"He came out to his parents. Old money, old values." Caitlin explains to him.
"They were estranged when we met, but brilliant. I couldn't have built the accelerator without him." Wells replies.
"You guys have never even mentioned his name," Barry says to his friends.
"That's because Harley had a challenging personality," Caitlin explains while scratching her neck.
"He was a jerk, but every once in a while...he could be a dick," Cisco added, causing Joe to laugh.
"Let's just say that Hartley, like many outliers, has trouble relating to his peers." Wells states.
"Yes, but he was always your favorite," Caitlin tells Wells.
"The chosen one." Cisco jokes.
"So, if you two were so close, why would he target you?" Joe wonders.
"Hartley left STAR Labs about a year ago after we had a... disagreement," Wells says answering his question.
"Disagreement about what?" Barry asks and Wells doesn't say anything regarding that. "Look, don't worry, we'll stop him,"
"I could've gone my whole life without seeing that jerk again," Cisco tells himself as Barry and Joe walk out of the labs to find him.
In the Pipeline below the group, Peter was talking with Sandman. He wanted to have another talk to see if he had anything else to say regarding the Goblin. Flint took another bite out of the burger that Peter brought down with him, as well as the other things he got for him from Big Belly Burger.
"Thanks, kid," Flint said as he crumbled up the burger wrapper. "But as I said, there's not much I can really say about the guy. Tech, glider, everything I've already said."
"Yeah, I know." Peter sighed and knew that this was a lost cause. "I knew you wouldn't know much." He then started to walk away and decided to leave the window open for a while. "Just figured one of the others might've said something you overheard."
Flint thought about it for a moment and quickly remembered a name. "Wait, there is one name that stood out."
Peter stopped and turned back to face Flint. "Who's that?"
"Norman Osborn," Flint recalled the name. "Otto, Doc Ock, he kept bringing it up like it was some big deal."
Peter thought of it for a moment and recognized the name. "Norman Osborn was there when Otto became Doc Ock. "That may be something worth looking into."
"That's all I've got." Flint was sorry to tell him.
"I'll look into it," Peter promises.
"Everything has a natural frequency," Barry tells Joe as he places a glass cup in front of a speaker in his lab. "And since should is expressed as a vibration, if the pitch of the sound matches the natural vibration frequency of an object, then..." he then turns up the frequency of the speaker until it destroyed the glass.
"So, you're saying that can happen to anything. Not just glass?" Joe asks his scientist-adopted son.
"Oh, yeah. I think it's what happened to the windows at Wells' house. He's using sonic technology." Barry explains.
"I'm getting this feeling that Wells is hiding something...about what's going on with this Rathaway character," Joe explains his suspicions about Wells to Barry.
"I mean, it sounds like the Hartley guy was a pain before he went all supervillain. So, I get why he wouldn't mention him." Barry explains.
"Like he never mentions his girlfriend that got killed?" Joe asks Barry remembering his conversations with Wells a while back.
"How do you know about her?" Barry asks Joe.
"He's taking up a big part of our lives. I wanted to know more about him." Joe explains to Barry.
"I mean, if you want to know more about him, you could've asked me."
"Seems like you don't know him as well as you think," Joe states when Eddie enters the lab.
"Joe. Multiple 911 calls. Rathaway Industries is under attack." Eddie explains and Joe takes Eddie out when his phone rings.
"Barry, it's Caitlin," Caitlin says when he answers.
"I think I know why you're calling," Barry says and gets his spare outfit from his locker.
Rathaway Industries is getting their windows shattered by a man wearing gauntlets that are shooting blasts off sound blasts off and he even shoots a police car with the gauntlets, shattering the engine. Barry then came speeding in and pushed him over.
"It's over, Rathaway," Barry tells him.
"You know my name. I know some names too. Caitlin Snow. Cisco Ramon. Harrison Wells." Hartley lists down their names. "I can hear the radio waves emanating from your suits. About 1900 megahertz. Is that them on the other end, listening?" Hartley asks them as he stands back up. "Are they gonna hear you die?"
"No, they're gonna hear you get your ass kicked," Barry told him.
"Okay," Hartley said with a scoff before releasing two blasts that caught Barry by surprise and sent him flying into a glass logo.
"Okay." Barry groaned as he got back on his feet and stood up with determination. "My turn."
Barry then quickly began to speed around the cops and took their batons and tossed them at Hartley. While he was disoriented, Barry sped over and ripped the gauntlets off his hands.
"Looks like you're not as smart as everyone says," Barry comments on Hartley.
"I'm smart enough to have figured out who Harrison Wells really is." Hartley states and that gets his attention. "You see, I know his secret."
While Barry was dealing with him, Joe was listening to Peter and Bobby about the possible identity of the Green Goblin. Joe looked over all of their work in the lounge and saw how most of the tech the Sinister Six used were all either stolen or created at OsCorp.
"So... you think Norman Osborn is the Green Goblin?" Joe asks the two of them.
"Or at least connected in some way," Peter said as he gestured to the work they'd done. "There are too many coincidences leading back to OsCorp in some shape or form. He either knows who the Goblin is or knows who is supplying him with all of these gadgets."
"And... what are you asking of me?" Joe wonders.
"Realistically, you're just here to double-check our work," Bobby admitted.
Joe looked over the board and saw that they did have a lot of good points. "It is a lot of good points, but you would need hard evidence to get the police to check him out."
"But it's enough to be suspicious, right?" Peter asks.
"I'll do a quick look into him when I get to the station." Joe offered all that he could for now. "In the meantime, don't do anything crazy. I know how you Allen's like to run headfirst into danger."
"Fair." Peter agreed as Joe walked off to take a look into Norman Osborn.
But Bobby knew his friend better and looked over at him with an I know what you're thinking look. "You're going to go talk to the guy we think is the monster terrorizing the city, aren't you?"
"Hey, you're catching on." Peter was happy to see while he patted his friend's shoulder as he walked towards the window. On his way over, he immediately started to change into his suit. "I'm just gonna go and talk to him. Ask him a few questions about the Goblin and if he could point me in any sort of direction."
"And if he points you with a lightning finger?" Bobby wonders.
"Then we have our guy," Peter confirmed that would be the worst scenario as he sat on the railing before doing a scuba dive off and swinging into the city.
Bobby looked around and just shrugged. "And now I a alone." He then blew a raspberry as he clapped his hands together. "I need to get some more friends."
Caitlin stood up, facing Dr. Wells with cold eyes after he confesses what had really happened the night the particle accelerator exploded.
"Well, the next time you decide to put our lives and the lives of the people we love at risk..." Caitlin's voice got dangerously quiet. "I'll expect a heads up."
Cisco turned and followed her out of the doorway. Barry just shook his head at his childhood mentor and went with them. He found Caitlin sitting with her back to the wall and her head in her hands. He approached her quietly and placed a hand on her shoulder.
"Cait- I can't even guess what you're going through right now." Barry didn't know how he was supposed to help her at this moment
Caitlin looked up, eyes burning and tears running down her cheeks. "If he hadn't taken such a risk, Ronnie would still be alive, Barry! I would still have him and-" Her voice broke, and she calmed down a little. "And I guess I would never have met you."
Sitting down beside her, Barry pulled her into his arms. "I wish that all of this hadn't happened. But at the same time, Cait, I'm glad it did. Not because it was a good thing. Losing your fiancé is never in any way a good thing. But if I hadn't gotten my speed... I never would have met you. And if I never met you... well, my life wouldn't be as amazing as it is today."
Caitlin pressed her head into Barry's shoulder with a little sob. "Thank you, Barry. I needed to hear that." She then simply curled herself into his arms more comfortably.
Back with Peter, he was just outside the penthouse that Norman Osborn was staying at. He wasn't surprised to look around the gigantic home and saw from his balcony he had a dozen weird rich people stuff. Paintings and Chinese masks of figures, as well as Japanese and Samurai swords all around the place.
Looking a little closer, he saw that Norman himself was in an office that was in the middle of the penthouse. Seeing he might have a good moment, he knocked on the window which ended up scaring Norman.
"Spider-Man?" Norman was surprised to see him and walked over to the door and open it for him. "What...what are you doing here?"
"Norman Osborn, can I have a word?" Peter asked, wanting to talk about the tech.
"Uh...of course. I suppose." Norman guessed and invited Spider-Man in as he walked ahead of him. "Sorry, you just gave me a fright."
"No worries. Sorry to drop in unexpectedly like this, but I needed to have a word with you." Peter tells him, using his mask to look around for any hidden entrances in his home.
"No, I'm just surprised to see Central City's hero in my penthouse," Norman said as he poured himself a drink from the attached kitchen. "You want something, or can you not drink and swing?"
"I'm good," Peter said, not wanting to reveal his age to Norman. "I wanted to talk to you about OsCorp."
"My company?" Norman was surprised to hear as he took a sip of his drink. "What about it?"
"I've been fighting off some of your company's tech recently," Peter said as he pulled out the chip that Cisco found that powered the Cold Gun from Snart and placed it on the counter for Norman to look over. "It's been showing up in a lot of technology that my enemies have been using."
Norman looked it over and was shocked at what he was looking at. "Strange. We have been developing similar power sources. Trying to put STARK Industries out of business."
"The same company the Goblin recently attacked?" Peter informed Norman.
Norman shrugged it off and tossed the device back to Peter, who instantly caught it. "I heard about it, but it wasn't anyone from my department. One of my own men was hurt in that explosion."
"How about weaponized handheld bombs and a glider?" Peter asks him.
Norman then seems to get an idea and saw what he was saying. "Mendel Stromm. He's in charge of the Military Division at OsCorp. He has been developing gliding tech and weaponized armor, as well as an experimental drug that can enhance human capabilities."
Peter saw that he was someone he could look into and nodded, placing the device in his patch. "Thanks for your help."
"Let me know if I can be any more helpful," Norman asked as Peter started to make his way out of the penthouse.
Peter looked back at him and nodded before leaping off the balcony and swinging off. He didn't get all the answers, but if Norman is the Goblin, he needed hard evidence. Showing that he was onto the criminal might be just what he needs to make a mistake to reveal himself.
Once they figured out where Hartley was, Barry had gotten into his Flash suit and whizzed off. Caitlin was really starting to get frustrated with all the dramatic exits, but that was a conversation for another time.
"Barry, you need to disarm Hartley immediately. Immediately, do you hear me? He's a master of distraction. He's a master of hiding his two-end game." Harrison called into the mic.
Right now, all Barry could think of was that the Pied Piper looked like some weird Star Wars cosplayer, what with his dark hooded cloak and everything. He almost smiled at the thought but refocused when Hartley blasted four cars into the air with his gloves.
Barry ran around them and took all the people inside out, setting them on the ground. Then he turned back to face Hartley.
Back at STAR Labs, Cisco was having a revelation. "Aha! Uh oh..."
"Aha, what?" Wells asked.
"I figured out what data Hartley stole from STAR Labs. Why did he let himself get caught."
"Which brings us to the uh oh." Caitlin prompted, heart pounding.
"He had all the data on Barry's molecular scans."
Caitlin still wasn't connecting the dots. "Why would he want that?"
Wells got it, though. "He can get Barry's frequency." He leaned forward, voice rising in panic. "Barry, you need to get out of there. You need to get out of there immediately!"
Barry didn't listen. He dodged Hartley's blasts, and grabbed the gloves, throwing them to the side. "It's over!" He yelled. "You lose."
To his surprise, the genius in front of him didn't seem that scared. "Amazing. You replaced me with you: Total moron. I got you with the same trick twice." Barry stared at him, uncomprehending.
Suddenly, intense pain shot through Barry's head. Through his blurry vision, he saw Hartley's gloves begin to vibrate. He clutched his head, falling to his knees.
Caitlin was on her feet, staring in horror at Barry's rapidly falling vitals. "Barry's vitals are bottoming out. We need to do something!"
Harrison wheeled over, pushing Cisco out of the way. "Barry's on a bridge at rush hour, surrounded by cars. Many of those cars are going to have satellite radio. The satellite sends the signal to the car and the car-"
Caitlin shook her head and was getting frustrated out of worry. "Yes, I know how satellite radio works! But how is that going to help Barry?"
"Well, I'm going to have the satellite send something different than a song. Hartley is about to hear something he's not expecting." Wells explains to her what he's planning. "A sound wave that will meet the frequency and destroy his weapons."
Back on the bridge, the sound stopped. Barry lay on the bridge, panting. Hartley ran over to his gloves as they exploded. He screamed as the explosion ended up hurting his hands as he fell to his knees on the bridge.
Caitlin's heart was thudding so loudly in her ears that she could barely hear. She sank into a chair, legs shaking too much to hold her up anymore. Cisco breathed a sigh of relief, and Wells ran a hand through his hair. "Checkmate."
"Barry, can you hear me?" Caitlin asked.
"Sorta!" Barry called back, a little louder than was needed.
"How do you feel?" Caitlin asked, walking around her desk as Barry tromped into the Cortex.
"Fine!" He said loudly. "I mean, there is a little ringing in my ears but other than that I'm good."
Caitlin rested her hand on his arm, trying not to laugh. "You're speaking very loudly."
"Sorry," Barry muttered sheepishly.
"It's ok, it'll pass." Caitlin smiled.
"Well done, Mr. Allen," Wells said. "You have trumped the chess master."
"I couldn't have done it without you," Barry responded seriously. "So thank you for that."
Wells nodded his head in acknowledgment. Then he wheeled out of the room. Cisco stood up. "Nice moves."
"Thank you." They clapped hands.
"Anytime." Cisco grinned and looked at Caitlin. "I think I'm going to take my doctor's advice and go lie down."
"What a great idea!" Caitlin chirped, and Cisco laughed. She followed him half outside the door, then turned to Barry. "Your house? 8:00?" She whispered as he replied with a nod as well as a smile, and waved goodbye.
Peter made his way home by swinging, just around the corner when he made his way into the alleyway. Once he made it there, he quickly changed into civilian clothes to not give away his identity.
Walking towards his home, he found MJ outside of her home talking to someone on the phone. Seems she just wrapped up the call when Peter approached as she hung up.
"Hey, Tiger." MJ greeted him.
"Hey, MJ." Peter greeted her as he walked over to her.
"Where have you been all day?" MJ wonders as she walked over to the fence that separates their yards.
"Just...helping my brother out with a case." Peter decided that was the best excuse he could come up with. "Trying to find out who the Green Goblin is."
"That Green Elf guy who's been terrorizing Spider-Man?" MJ remembered.
"The very same," Peter confirmed.
"Any suspects so far?" MJ wonders.
"Narrowed it down to at least OsCorp." Peter shrugged. "But that narrows the list to at least two hundred people. And need to get the warrants to search OsCorp, see who invented the tech and who has access to it. Who has the most to gain out of all of it."
"Sounds like a lot of work," MJ commented and leaned on the fence.
"Well, if one more psychopath is off the streets by the end, it'll be worth it," Peter said as he made his way inside. "Nothing more I can do for it. See you later."
"Night," MJ said and watched him leave. But then she got an idea and wondered if there was something she could do. "Maybe nothing you can do. But maybe I can."
The next day at Jitters, MJ was searching for someone when she spotted Iris West sitting at a table near the back. She quickly made her way to the back and greeted her casually.
"Hey, Iris." MJ greeted him.
"Hi, Mary Jane. I was surprised to get your call." Iris said as MJ took her seat.
"Please, call me MJ," MJ asked of her.
"So, what did you want to talk about?" Iris asks her.
"Well, I heard you're a reporter now, and I was thinking about the...Green Goblin." MJ started to get to the point.
"Who?" Iris asks.
"That's apparently what we're calling the Green Elf guy who attacked the police prescient," MJ explains to her.
"Oh," Iris confirmed she understood. "Green Goblin. I like it."
"Seems that they're having trouble with the legal procedures, and was thinking-"
"You're thinking about that maybe with me being a reporter, I can get into places that they can't." Iris started to understand. She took a moment and was considering her proposal and saw it would be something that could give her a break from the Flash stories. "What have you got so far?"
The Watcher then finally came into view for the first time and eyed the girls. "MJ has had many jobs throughout the multiverse. In one universe, an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D."
Earth-616 Michelle Jones comes into sight.
"In another, she's a singer."
Then the Earth Prime MJ from the Mary Jane's (the band Gwenyth is the drummer in) comes into view."
"An actress."
Earth-173 Mary Jane came into view.
"And even in a few, she's a superhero. Iron Woman. Spinneret. But in a few...she's inspired to be a reporter."
A possible future of Mary Jane in a group of reporters comes into view.
"Only time will tell what she is destined to become in this reality."
