A/N: Here is JJ's side to Emily's ultimatum and the conversation that followed.
JJ felt like Emily was avoiding her all day, so she texted to ask if they could have dinner. JJ smiled when she saw Emily was calling and answered on the first ring. "Hey, Em."
"JJ. Hi," Emily said.
She sounded a little off, but JJ decided to ignore it. "Did you get my text about dinner? I was thinking Thai. There's that great little place near your apartment that has the best…"
"Jennifer." Emily cut her off.
JJ's heart raced at the change in tone. "Uh oh. What's wrong?"
Emily sighed. "We can't do dinner. Or anything else."
JJ tried to swallow the lump in her throat. "Okay. If you're busy tonight, that's okay."
"It isn't just about tonight."
"Is this because of Tara? Did she say something? I can talk to her, explain…"
"JJ, no." Emily sounded impatient. "It's because of the same conversation I've tried to have with you a million times over the years. I know you count on me to forget, to need or want you so much that I don't stick to my boundaries, but I need you to have a little more respect for me right now."
"I-I'm sorry," JJ whispered, trying hard not to cry. Emily was right. She did take advantage of Emily's weakness for her and it wasn't fair. She had to do something about it.
"I know you are. You always are. And I am too. I never thought I would be the type to give an ultimatum, but the truth is, I love you too much not to. If we keep going like this, with you still in your marriage, with me as your dirty little secret, it will destroy us. I cannot do it this way anymore. I won't."
JJ didn't know what to say. She should have known this was coming. More than that, she should have done the right thing a long time ago.
"JJ?" Emily asked.
"I'm here. I'm so sorry for hurting you like this. I never meant for any of this to happen."
"Neither did I. But I can't not love you. And I can't share you." Tears were in Emily's voice.
"You're not, Em. All of me belongs to you. But I understand what you're saying. I have to make it right. I promise I will." JJ knew exactly what she had to do and it couldn't wait another day.
"Whatever you need to do, know that I will always love you. But until you choose me, and only me, we cannot see each other outside of work anymore. I've put you above everything else in my life for years. I have happily given up so many things just because you asked me to. Do this for yourself."
"Emily, I -" JJ stopped, realizing Emily had ended the call.
She texted Will to see if he was on his way home. He replied almost instantly that he was in the driveway. She took a deep breath and put on a smile for her boys, but the nerves ate at her all through dinner and bath time and bedtime stories, as she tried to keep up normal appearances. When the boys were asleep, she joined Will on the couch.
"I'm surprised you're home tonight. You've been missin' a lot lately," Will said.
"We need to talk about that," JJ responded with a sigh.
"I've been tryin' to talk to you for a long time, JJ."
Will looked defeated and JJ considered not having the conversation after all, but she knew she owed this to Emily. And to Will. And to herself. She couldn't keep lying about who she was and what she wanted. "I think we need to get a divorce." She searched her husband's face for several minutes for any sign of surprise, but found none. His silence was killing her. "Say something."
"Can't say I didn't see this comin'," Will said finally. "I've thought about bringin' it up myself a time or two."
"You have?" JJ asked.
"We both know you haven't been in this marriage for awhile. I don't know the truth about what you've been up to all these nights you say you're with Emily or the team and I haven't tried to find out because I don't know that I wanna know. But I know it's not me you wanna be with. Not anymore."
JJ hadn't planned to go there, but he had it all wrong. She wasn't cheating on him with some random guy and he should know that. Not that it would make it any better, but at least it was about love. "Will, I haven't – I really have been with Emily."
Will's eyes widened the second JJ said her name, at the way she said her name. "With Emily?" He shook his head. "I don't know why I never saw it before. It all makes a lot more sense now. How long have you known?"
"Known what exactly?"
"That you liked women," he snapped. "That you wanted her instead of me."
JJ sighed. The damage was done. Honesty was all she could offer him now. "For as long as I can remember. But it was never instead. I love you, Will, I promise I do. I loved you from the beginning and always will. I just," her voice broke. "I love her in a different way. A way I can't ignore. And I don't want to hurt you anymore."
So many conflicting emotions flashed on Will's face. "You don't want to hurt me? Or you don't want to hurt your boss?"
JJ put her hand over his. "I've been hurting all three of us for a long time. I have to do what I can to make it right."
"Do what you gotta do, JJ." Will shook her hand off him and stood. "But you should go. Before I say somethin' I'm gonna regret."
JJ nodded and went to their bedroom to pack a bag. She texted Garcia that she needed a place to stay for a few days, maybe longer. Penelope was calling almost immediately, but JJ sent her to voicemail. She received a text a few seconds later.
Garcia: Of course. Stay as long as you need.
JJ threw things in her bag hurriedly. Will came in and sat on the bed in silence, watching her. She hated that she was breaking his heart. He was her family. She hoped that this would strengthen their family, in the long run. No one was happy living with the way things were.
"I'll call you in the morning to make plans for the boys," JJ told him softly.
Will nodded.
JJ turned to leave the room, but hesitated and put her hand on his shoulder. "Will, I–"
"No," he muttered, shrugging her hand away. "If it's not about our children, I don't want to hear it. Not right now. I need some time, JJ."
"That's fair." JJ left without looking back again. She cried as she got into her car and pulled out of the driveway, but the closer she got to Garcia's, the lighter she felt. Her heart ached to not be in the same place as her boys, but she and Will would work something out. He was kind and fair and he loved their family. His reaction, while hurt, had been better than she could've expected. Things were going to be okay.
Garcia welcomed her with open arms and a bottle of wine. JJ told her about the impending divorce and Will asking her to leave, choosing not to mention Emily yet. Garcia was very understanding and supportive, as she'd seen the growing distance between JJ and Will for quite some time. JJ was exhausted in every way. She felt a peace like she'd never had before, despite all the stress, and she couldn't wait for a night of uninterrupted sleep. But first she had to tell Emily. She considered calling, but it was late. She couldn't even be sure Emily would answer the phone.
It was almost midnight when she sent the texts.
JJ: It's done.
JJ: I'm going to stay with Garcia so you can have space
JJ: I love you.
