This chapter is a continuation of the previous chapter. If you have not read that chapter, please do so before reading this one.
Fighter's Royal is well underway and halfway through the first day, team K3 has gone their separate ways to find opponents and quickly gather points. They traveled to different districts of Japan, denoted by the Vanguard Association. Alex stayed in the Dragon Empire district, Yui went to the United Sanctuary District, and Rina went to the Dark Zone district.
Alex is in a cardfight with a young boy with spiky brown hair. "High Steam Maiden Kashima attacks the Vanguard (G4/45000)!" she declares as the hologram of Kashima flies full force at the opponent's Vanguard, disintegrating it (Boy: [X][X][X][X][][]).
"You beat me…" the boy says as he bows.
"YES!" Alex cheers and then looks at her phone to see her points go up (Alex: 3200-3800).
Meanwhile, Yui is in a cardfight with a girl with pigtails. "Generation Stride!" Yui declares as the Stride circle appears above her and her Vanguard swims up into it before swimming down as a mermaid with a harp in her hands "Melody of Tranquil Sound, Monica (GX/24000)! Attack the Vanguard!" Monica strums her harp and defeats the giant green dragon of her opponent's (Girl: [X][X][][][][])
"Whaaaat?!" the girl screams, "I lost?!" Yui gives a peace sign with a wink (Yui: 2400-3100).
Also meanwhile, Rina is in a cardfight with a rather punk-looking boy as she declares, "With her skill… Relena with 2 Critical stands! Attack (G4/31000-46000/Crit 2)!" Relena fires a beam of dark magic from her staff and vaporizes the opponent's brute Vanguard (Punk: [X][][][][][]).
"Ugh… this is embarrassing…" he says as Rina swishes one of her twin tails with a smug face (Rina: 3400-3700).

Drive 20 – Shadow and Light
Later, Rina sits on a park bench while sucking on a popsicle and talking to her teammates through video chat on her phone. "So how are you girls doing so far?" Alex's voices come through.
"So far so good," Rina says and then pulls the popsicle out of her mouth, "So far a lot of my opponents have been pretty weak."
"Yeah, mine too." Yui adds.
"Well that's to be expected," Alex shrugs as she explains, "But as the days go on, our opponents are gonna start getting stronger as the weaker one drops out."
"Then we'd better stay on our toes." Rina says with a smile.
Just then, an announcement plays from a blimp flying overhead. The screen on the side of it shows the MC as he says, "Good day cardfighters! It's your MC, here to bring you an update on the status of the tournament. He looks at some papers and is surprised by something, "What's this?! One fighter defeated three opponents at once and earned a ridiculous number of points?!" From their separate districts, Alex, Yui, and Rina are surprised by this announcement, and at the same time, somewhere else, Subaru and his two teammates lie on the floor void of any soul and their cards scattered about as a man with long black hair, wearing a gray suit, and a matching bowler hat smirks as he walks away from the scene.
"Someone defeated three people at once?!" Alex exclaims in shock.
"Sounds like we better pick up the pace." Rina says. Just then she looks over her phone and sees something odd. She sees Koharu walking into an inactive construction site, and wonders why she's there.
Alex can see her expression and asks, "Uh, you okay Rina?"
"I'll… talk to you girls later." Rina says as she quickly hangs up the call without the others being able to respond. She throws away her popsicle and heads for the construction site.
Koharu walks through the forest of metal beams when she hears someone calling her name "Koharu!" she turns around defensively to see Rina standing across from her.
"Oh… it's you." Koharu says, remembering Rina from what happened at Eiji's hideout (Drive 12).
"I haven't seen you in a long time, not even at school." Rina says while walking towards her, "What are you doing here?"
Koharu lets out a small sigh and explains, "I'm participating in Fighter's Royal." As she pulls out her phone to show Rina how many points she's collected (Koharu: 5400).
Rina is shocked by that number, then looks back at Koharu and says, "I didn't know you were participating. Are you still with Eiji?" Koharu simply nods in response. Rina grits her teeth and shouts, "Why are you still living with that jerk?! Can't you see what he's doing to you?!" Koharu is silent as she places her hand on her stomach, "Come on, tell me!" Rina insists, standing her ground.
"The damage has already been done…" Koharu says with a stuttering voice.
Rina, in a confused voice, asks, "What do you mean?"
"If you want me to tell you…" Koharu mutters and then pulls out her deck and exclaims, "you'll have to fight me!"
Rina growls and says, "Fine!" as she pulls out her own deck, "But if I win, you have to tell me everything about what's going on! No 'buts' and forgetting everything Eiji's warned you about."
The two find a fight table within the construction site and prepare to fight. They place their hands on their starters and declare, "Stand up… VANGUARD!"
"Apprentice Witch, Kona (G0/5000)!" Rina declares.
"Witch of Rings, Kirina (G0/5000)." Koharu declares.
As the two commence their fight, a mysterious feminine figure watches their fight from atop one of the support beams.
Meanwhile, in the United Sanctuary district, Yui walks down the street slumped forward and groaning like a zombie, "Uhhhh…" she falls flat on her belly as her stomach growls and she says, "I'm sooo hungry… I knew I shouldn't have skipped breakfast today…"
"Well, you look a bit worse for wear." A calm and soothing voice says to her.
Yui looks up and sees a very familiar face. "Saki?!"
Saki takes Yui to a nearby diner and buys her some lunch, which Yui proceeds to chow down on, non-stop. "Mmmmm! So good!" Yui says with her mouth still full of food.
"Feeling better?" Saki asks her, sitting on the opposite side of the table.
Yui nods and says, "Yes! Thank you, Saki." She swallows her food and says, "I might not have made it if it weren't for you."
Saki smiles and says, "Just looking out for one of my pupils." She then changes the subject and asks, "So I take it you're participating in Fighter's Royal?"
"Yeah." Yui replies, "We're plowing through our opponents!"
"I see." Saki says and then asks, "So what do you say we have a cardfight?"
Yui nearly chokes on her food hearing this and asks, "Like… right now?!"
"Sure why not." Saki replies, "After all, they said we can fight anywhere, anytime."
Yui thinks about it and then says, "Well… while I would like to fight you again, I'm going to have to decline." And Saki tilts her head in confusion, "I just don't think I'm strong enough to face you yet. I still have a long way to go, both as a fighter and as a person, but once I'm ready, you'll be my first opponent!"
Saki is taken aback for a moment but then smiles and responds, "Then I'll be waiting." And Yui smiles back at her.
Back at the construction site, Rina and Koharu have gone through a few turns of their fight. (Rina: [X][X][]/Hand 6) (Koharu: [][][]/Hand 9) Rina is at grade 3 and Koharu is at grade 2, Koharu has been soul charging a lot and Rina has been filling out her board with rear-guards while stacking her drop zone.

Now Koharu is about to ride to grade 3. Koharu draws a card, then takes a card from her hand and chants, "Goddess of dreams, free me from the shackles of reality and transport us to a world of fantasy! Ride!" Koharu's previous Vanguard is absorbed by a bright light, and in its place, stands a beautiful woman with heterochromia eyes, silky pink hair, and wearing majestic robes, "Dreamcaster Elisia (G3/12000). Revelation 2!"
"Revelation?" Rina question."
"I look at cards from the top of my deck equal to the number, then I can either put them all back on top in the same order, or put them all into the soul. I'll send them to the soul (Soul 6-8). Rest Yumehiro. Next I discard Witch of Constellations Seiza from my hand to activate Elisia's Soul Drive right now (Soul 8-7). The cost is 3 Soul Blasts (Soul 7-4). Elisia's Soul Drive activates! Add 2000 power, 1 grade, and 1 drive (G3-4/12000-14000/drive 2-3)! Next I call Battle Maiden Kotonoha (G2/10000). Revelation 1. Send to the soul (Soul 4-5) Rest Kotonoha. With Kotonoha's skill, when cards are put into the soul, add 1000 power (10000-11000), then if it was put by a Revelation skill, add another 1000 (11000-12000). I call Battle Maiden Miyukihime (G1/8000)! Revelation 1! To the soul (Soul 5-6) (Kotonoha: 12000-13000-14000). Rest Miyukihime"
Rina observes Koharu's plays and thinks, "She's using Revelation as a way to soul charge, while at the same time, adding power to Kotonoha… Clever."
"I activate Miyukihime's skill. I can put up to five cards from my drop zone back into my deck, shuffle, and add 2000 power to Miyukihime for each card returned. I returned five cards, so add 10000 power (8000-18000), also, if my Vanguard is Driven, Stand Kotonoha. I call Battle Maiden Mutsuki. With her skill (Soul 6-5), Stand Yumehiro and add 3000 power (8000-11000), and since my Vanguard's Driven, add 5000 power to Mutsuki (10000-15000). I call another Yumehiro (G1/8000). Revelation 1." Koharu looks at the card and smirks. I'll leave it on top."
"What's she planning?" Rina questions.
"Lastly, I use the skill of Kirina in the soul. Bind her (Soul 5-4) and my next Soul Blast cost is reduced by 3."

"Boosted by Yumehiro, on the right, Mutsuki attacks Bellet (15000-26000). Using Yumehiro's skill, Soul Charge 1 for each of my other Revelation units. Besides this Yumehiro specifically, there are four (Soul 4-8). On top of that, add 4000 power to Kotonoha (14000-18000)."
Rina hesitates for a second and says, "No guard." Mutsuki fires her SMG and turns Bellet into particles.
"Boosted by Yumehiro, Elisia attacks the Vanguard. Once again, Yumehiro's skill! Soul Charge 4 (Soul 8-12) (Kotonoha 18000-22000). Next I activate Elisia's skill in my hand!"
"Huh?!" Rina exclaims.
"Since I used Kirina's skill, this skill is free! I superior ride Elisia from my hand, she becomes Driven, and she attacks immediately! Add 5000 power (G4/14000-19000)! Revelation 2!" Koharu looks at both cards, smiles, and puts them both back on top."
Rina thinks to herself, "So she uses a superior ride to get more revelations during the battle phase… and if she put them both on top, then that means…" Rina takes a card from her hand and declares, "Complete Guard!"
"You read my hand nicely." Koharu tells her "Triple Drive (Critical/Draw/none)!" Rina grits her teeth, "Double Trigger. All effects to Kotonoha (22000-42000/Crit 1-2) and draw a card. Kotonoha attacks the Vanguard!"
"No guard…" Rina declares, forcing herself to take the hit. (Rina: [X][X][][][])
Koharu sighs and says, "I end my turn. With their skills, both Yumehiros return to my hand."
"Stand and draw." Rina declares, but pauses for a moment and says, "I don't understand…" confusing Koharu, "why are you still letting Eiji do whatever he wants to you? Aren't you the daughter of some prestigious family?" Koharu looks down holding her stomach and doesn't say a word, which causes Rina to grow irritated, "Well? Are you going to answer me?!"
Koharu continues to remain silent, but finally responds and says, "If I talk, he'll throw me out…"
Rina raises an eyebrow at this and asks, "Um… wouldn't that be a good thing? Because he's clearly abusing you.
"YOU DON'T GET IT!" Koharu shouts, interrupting her. Rina takes a step back in shock and Koharu holds her body in fear "I have no where else to go…" she says with a shaky voice, "He took everything from me… and yet he's the only home I have…"
"What are you talking about?" Rina asks, but Koharu doesn't answer, "Not going to talk? Fine, I'll make you talk! The cost is retiring two rear-guards (Ritual 4-6)! I activate Master Witch of Determination Relena's Soul Drive! Add 3000 power, 1 grade, and 1 drive (G3-4/13000-16000/drive 2-3)! I call Witch of the Tome Madoka (G1/7000)! With her skill ([X][X][X][][]), since it's treated as grade 1, I call Motivated Witch Relena from my deck (G2/10000)! Using Motivated Relena's skill! I look at five cards from the top of my deck and call a unit with Ritual from among them. I call Witch of the Gun, Bellet (G2/10000)! With Bellet's skill, discard a card and draw a card." Rina discards a copy of Master Witch of Determination Relena, and Koharu catches on to this. "I call Witch of the Lance Vera (G1/7000), and activate Master Relena's skill! I retire Motivated Relena and Vera (Ritual 6-7), and now you have to retire Kotonoha!" Koharu grits her teeth as she watches Kotonoha vanish into thin air. "When Driven, I can also draw a card (Hand 3-4). Vera's skill! When retired by a card's ability, add 5000 power to my Vanguard Relena (16000-21000). I call Motivated Relena (G2/10000) and with her skill, call Black Sage Charon from the deck (G1/8000), and with her skill (Soul 2-1), Counter Charge and add 3000 power ([X][X][][][])(8000-11000)! Lastly with Witch of the Boomerang Aussie's Ritual 5 in my drop zone, I superior call her (Ritual 7-6) (G1/8000)!"

"So? How do you like that?" Rina asks, trying to taunt Koharu, but she doesn't respond. "Boosted by Madoka, Motivated Relena attacks the Vanguard (10000-17000)!" The attack hits (Koharu: [][][][]). "Boosted by Aussie, Bellet attacks the Vanguard (10000-18000)! Bellet's skill ([X][X][X][][]). Once again, I call Motivated Relena from my deck (G2/10000), and with her skill… I call Slacking Witch Relena from my deck over Madoka (G1/8000) (Ritual 6-7)!"
"Mutsuki intercepts (5000)!" Koharu declares.
"With Slacking Relena's Ritual 3, add 4000 power (8000-12000)! Boosted by Slacking Relena, Motivated Relena attacks the Vanguard (10000-22000)!
"No guard." Koharu declares (Koharu: [][][][][]).
"Boosted by Charon, Master Relena attacks your Vanguard (16000-27000)! I activate Relena's Ritual 8!"
"Ritual 8?" Koharu questions, "But you only have seven grade 1s in the drop zone."
Rina smirks and says, "When Relena is Driven, my Trigger units and Relena cards count towards Ritual."
"W-What?!" Koharu exclaims hearing this insane effect (Ritual 7-14).
"I activate Relena's skill! Normally this skill would cost me 3 counter blast, but for each Relena card in the drop zone, that cost is reduced by 1. So essentially, it's free." Rina says, trying to mimic Koharu, much to her dismay, "I put two normal units from my drop zone on the bottom of my deck (Ritual 14-12). With that, Relena gains 15000 power and 1 critical (27000-42000/Crit 1-2)!"
"Complete Guard!" Koharu declares.
"Triple Drive (none/none/Critical). Critical Trigger! All effects to Relena (42000-52000). I'm not done! At the end of the battle, if Relena is Driven, she can stand! Minus 2 drive (41000/drive 3-1)!" Koharu braces for the impact, "One more time!" Rina screams with a fiery passion, "Relena attacks your Vanguard!"
"I guard (15000+15000=30000)!"
"If I can pull a trigger, I win." Rina thinks to herself and reaches for her deck, "Drive Check!" Rina hesitates, anxious about the draw, "I can do this…" she pulls off the top card and flips it over… (none). "Eh?!" the attack is blocked. "I… I end my turn…"
Koharu draws a card from my deck and asks, "You wanted to know why I still go through Eiji's nonsense? Right?"
"Huh?"
"Well… where to begin?" Koharu then explains her situation to Rina. "You're right, I am the daughter of a prestigious family, the Sakurako foundation. Our company quickly rose in power, to where it became almost as strong as the Kiba group, but our power didn't last long. Someone in the company tipped off my father about a business decision that would push us over the edge of success, and my father took it. I knew little about business at the time, but it seemed to work at first, but it quickly drove our company into the ground."
"Your foundation went out of business?" Rina asks and Koharu nods in response.
"My parents were the only ones heading the business," she continues, "and my father tried his hardest to pull us out of this hole. The Kiba group even offered us assistance multiple times, but my father constantly refused, seeing Kiba as a rival, and unwilling to take help from a rival. Soon after he declared that, the requests stopped coming… and then it happened…" tears begin to stream from Koharu's eyes and Rina's eyes widen with surprise, "On our way back from a meeting about how to proceed forward with the company, myself and parents were attacked by a group of thugs because we could no longer pay our limousine driver. The thugs demanded everything from us at gun point, and even after my father gave them what they wanted, they still… they still…" Koharu stutters, at a loss for words. Meanwhile, Rina listens intently. After composing herself a little, Koharu finally says, "those thugs still shot and killed both of my parents, and I thought I was going to be next… but that's when he came in."
"Eiji?" Rina asks and Koharu nods, confirming her suspicions.
"He fought and beat up the thugs and took me home with him back to the Kiba mansion. It was there I met with his father, the CEO of the Kiba corporation, Shion Kiba. Mr. Shion Kiba was a very nice man. He absorbed the Sakurako group to help get it back on its feet now that my parents were gone, and I had no idea how to run it, and after that, Eiji asked to take me as his fiancé."
"And you agreed to that?" Rina asked.
"I didn't think it would lead to this!" Koharu retaliates, "The whole fiancé thing was just an excuse for Eiji to get close to me, even around his father. Because of that, he just uses me as his plaything because he can get away with it, that fiancé lie! So that's why I can't leave. I have no home to go back to, at least not where Eiji won't find me."
"Koharu…" Rina mutters.
Koharu clinches her fist in anger and says, "I've had it… I can't take this anymore! I can't take the abuse! I can't take the sexual assaults! I even if I wanted to leave I can't!" her voice evolves into a full-on shout, "Just because I'm his fiancé doesn't mean I'm his wife! I shouldn't have to bear his children if I don't want to!"
"Wait what…?" Rina questions, trying to understand, but Koharu doesn't listen.
"I've had it… I've had it, I've had it, I'VE HAD IT!" she screams in an emotional breakdown, "I WON'T STAND TO BE EIJI'S PUPPET ANYMORE!" with that, Koharu continues her turn, "I pay 5 Soul Blast to liberate the Generation Zone (Soul 13-8)! GENERATION STRIIIIIIIIDE!" In Elisia's place, stands a petite goddess holding an ornament-like object, with multi-colored wings, and snakes of pure light fly around her. "Mythical Destroyer Deity, OUROBOROS (GX/23000)!"
"Wh-What is that?!" Rina exclaims.
"Ouroboros's Revelation 1! To the soul (8-9), Rest Miyukihime. I call Battle Maiden Kotonoha (G2/10000), Celestian Witch Yukihara (G2/10000), Battle Maiden Mihikarihime (G1/8000) Starlight Painter Yumehiro (G1/8000)! Revelation 1, three times! I send them all to the soul (9-12)! Rest Mihikarihime, Kotonoha, and Yumehiro! Since 3 cards were put into the soul by a Revelation ability, add 6000 power to Kotonoha (10000-16000)! Activating Ouroboros's skill (Soul 12-10/G-Zone 0-1)! Since I turn an Ouroboros face up in the G-Zone, activating its Revelation!"
"Revelation in the G-Zone?!" Rina exclaims.
"Normally it's Revelation 1, but for each Ouroboros face up in the G-Zone, it goes up. So now it's Revelation 2! I send them both to the soul (Soul 10-12) (Kotonoha 16000-20000)! Rest Yukihara! Now continuing with the skill of my Vanguard Ouroboros, I stand all of my resting rear-guards!"
"What?!"
"In addition, Ouroboros gains 5000 power for each unit that stood by this effect! Since five stood, add 25000 power (23000-48000)! Then, if three or more units stood, the base critical of all units in my front row becomes 2!"

"Then if five units stood, you can't call grade 0s when Ouroboros attacks this turn!" Rina cowers before Koharu's God-like unit realizing there's no way she can win. "I refuse to be a plaything any longer! Ouroboros ATTACK THE VANGUARD (48000-56000)!"
"Rina looks at her hand and thinks, "If only I had a heal trigger…" then declares out loud, "No guard…"
"Triple Drive (Critical/Critical/Critical)!"
"Triple Critical?!" Rina exclaims.
"All effects to Ouroboros (56000-86000/Crit 2-5)!" The unit fires a massive beam of light at Rina, causing her entire formation to disintegrate and she screams in fear, but before she knows it, the light fades away and the holograms have disappeared too. She looks around, confused as to what happened, but then looks down at her board (Rina: [X][X][X][][][]).
"I… lost…" Rina mutters with a soulless expression. There is silence in the construction site for a moment, as the shadowy figure above is about to leave, suddenly, clapping can be heard coming towards them.
"Well done, Koharu." A masculine voice can be heard. Koharu turns around and Rina looks up to see who spoke, and from the darkness of the metallic jungle, Eiji emerges clapping his hands slowly.
"Eiji!" Rina exclaims in anger and Koharu sneers at him.
"So, you told someone despite my warnings," Eiji tells them, putting a hand on his forehead, "I see how it is." Before he can say anything more, Rina jumps in front of Koharu like she's trying to defend her. "Step aside pigtails," Eiji demands, "You mean nothing to me."
"What do want with Koharu, and why only her?!" Rina asks, demanding an answer.
"Because I love her. Nothing more, nothing less." Eiji explains.
"A true lover wouldn't abuse his partner if they weren't comfortable with it, even if they forcefully agree!" Rina says in a harsh voice. "You made her your fiancé only so you could do whatever you want with her!"
"You know nothing." Eiji says, "When you have power, you can do whatever you want, and no one has the right to oppose you! That's just the law of nature!"
Rina grits her teeth and says, "Why you…!"
"No step aside. Koharu, it's time to go home." Eiji extends a hand but is quickly interrupted by another voice, this time, a deep feminine voice.
"That's enough!" the voice says. Everyone looks up to where that voice came from, and from the beams above, a young woman with bright yellow hair tied in a pony-tail, and wearing a black sports bra, a yellow jacket, dark blue pants, brown shoes, and a light gray baseball cap, leaps off the beam and lands between the two parties. "These two are not your slaves." The woman says.
"Wh-Who are you?" Rina asks.
"You two, get out of here," the woman instructs them, "and Koharu, if you really do want to join us, meet us at the meeting spot."
"So…" Eiji mutters, "you're the one who's been implanting thoughts into Koharu's head to get her to join your stupid little revolution."
"And what if I am?" the woman asks.
Eiji smirks and says, "Then you'll have made the biggest mistake of your life." Eiji gets ready to throw a punch, and the woman takes a fighting stance, but before his fist can reach her, another figure appears behind Eiji and sweeps him by the legs.
"Going down?" the figure, with a much higher pitched and cocky voice says. After Eiji falls over, everyone can get a good look at the person. It was a smaller woman with a long black ponytail tied up by a large red ribbon and wears a blue headband, a black jacket with a blue t-shirt underneath, a pale blue skirt, black thigh-highs, and dark purple boots. "Heya, am I late?" the girl cheerfully asks with a wink.
"No, you're actually right on time." The yellow-haired woman says.
"Wh-What the heck is going on?!" Rina asks.
"Listen you two, get out of here." The same woman repeats herself.
"Wait hold on! I want answers!" Rina demands.
"Kyoko…" the woman says to the other girl, who runs behind her, grabs both Rina and Koharu's arms, and drags them away from the scene.
"Come on, I'll take you guys to the meeting spot." The girl says and doesn't even give them enough time to talk before running off, leaving only the yellow-haired woman and Eiji at the construction site.
"Ha ha ha… Clever, I'll give you that." Eiji tells her.
"Eiji Kiba…" the woman says as she pulls out a Vanguard deck and holds it at Eiji, "Fight me! I… Riku Momoya, will give you the punishment you rightfully deserve!"
