Chapter 11
At LAX, he was waiting in the white lane for his mother. According to Beverly, she has to attend a psychiatric conference near Pasadena and, as a double purpose, she would like to visit Sheldon, Penny, and him.
He was out of his mind, thinking about last night's date night. It was in a Chinese restaurant, and Amy seemed not in the mood.
"Are you okay?" You seem a little distracted. " He inquired, removing the skin of her orange fried chicken.
"I'm just thinking about my addiction study at UCLA. I'm sorry. I know it's date night, and I acted inappropriately. How was your day? " He gave her the plate.
"It was nice. Do you want to go home? You look in distress. " He sensed that something was bothering her, and as his boyfriend, he wanted to help her.
They talk about his new laser, which he provided for himself when Sieberg assigned him from the university fund, and spur Bernadette and Howards in the midst of their wedding before the astronaut departs and wagers on Penny's baby's gender. He drove her home and stayed a little longer for tea. Before he left, Amy captured his lips, pressing them longer than usual while pulling him.
He knew from that moment that something was up and he had to investigate. Amy didn't normally kiss him for more than 7 seconds. He enjoyed it, but he observed something strange about her actions.
The radio was playing Justin Bieber's Love Me as Sheldon did not join the ride to fetch his mother from the airport. I guess I'm just a sucker for love, in the background.
He texted his girlfriend since it was time for lunch.
Leonard: Amy, don't forget to eat your lunch. I'm at the airport waiting for my mother.
Amy: You too. Are you going to eat right away?
Leonard: Possibly, but I preferred eating in the university cafeteria with you.
Amy: I know. Drive safely. XO
XO?
He was startled when his mother knocked on the car window. He unlocked the passenger seat's door. They remained silent for a while.
"I need the phone number of Dr. Amy Farrah Fowler." Beverly said. He pulled over immediately.
"What do you want from Amy?!" He parked on the side of the road.
"Calm down. Not everything is about you, dear." Her mother fixed her eyeglasses. "If you don't want to give me your girlfriend's phone number, at least schedule me a meeting with her."
He wanted to know her mother's business with Amy. The only possible way to know is to ask her girlfriend. He drove to Glendale for her conference.
She was working at Caltech when he received Leonard's text. Amy didn't tell him anything about the email she sent to his mother, three weeks ago.
"We are so close to proving this theory! I'm so excited and I just can't hide it." Sheldon yelled after he solved a part of his equation.
"I'm sorry. What? " She was way out of her mind. She needs to prepare to face Beverly.
"Something's troubling you." Sheldon walked close to her. "Do you want to talk about it?"
She wished she could, but her boy-slashed friend might never understand. She needs Penny now. She's nervous about this interaction, but she wants her boyfriend's mother to stop degrading Leonard. She needed to fight for him.
She texted the pregnant waitress as they would have a girl's night tomorrow night to discuss her situation with Beverly. She needed context and additional data. She wants to win this fight and she definitely will.
"It's nothing, Sheldon." Walking to the other white board. "What if we change Delta T to alpha sub-zero."
"Friendship Agreement Section 3: In any problematic situation, either with Friend # 1 or Friend # 2, the other party will automatically provide assistance until the dilemma is resolved." She felt Sheldon walked close to behind her.
"Sheldon, I don't have a problem." She looked at the board, trying to change the equation.
"Is this about Leonard's mother?" The marker in her hand dropped on the floor. "I know what you did. She asked for your phone number, but it's not my position to provide that. " He picked up the pen.
"Thank you, Sheldon." She knew that he was protecting her. She wanted to hug her friend, but she stopped herself.
"Now, let's work on your case. You know what I like to do when I'm forced to speak with those beneath my intellectual station? I bring up an interesting topic, like the difference between Spider-Man and spiders. "
"Are you saying I'm better than my boyfriend's mother?"
"You do. She is brilliant, but you're just as brilliant. Besides, you're wise and you smell like books. You really are the whole package. " He clarified.
"That means a lot to me." She didn't have any idea of why she did it, but she embraced him tightly.
They started working on Leonard's condition. He provided some insights and information about Leonard's childhood. They found some research to support her predicament. She must win this battle to prove to Beverly that Leonard deserves her acceptance.
They continue with Quantum Cognition Theory after they finish the preparation of her slides. Around 3 p.m., Sheldon asked her if he wanted to come to the cafeteria to grab some snacks.
"Penny told me Beverly kissed you when she was drunk." She asked while walking in the hallway.
"That waitress needs to learn not to mind other people's business." She found him frowning. Maybe bringing it up is not a good idea. "Yes, she kissed me but she was intoxicated with alcohol and, for the record, I brushed my teeth twice after that and rinsed three times with mouthwash."
Once they finished eating, they went back to her lab and found Bert waiting outside the door.
"Hi, Amy. I, oh, I'm sorry. I didn't know you had any company. " He walked towards her.
"That's okay. Uh, Bert, this is Sheldon. Sheldon, this is Bert." She opened the door and all of them went inside.
"Hi." Sheldon greeted him.
"Anyway, I wanted to show you this tourmalinated quartz that we got in the lab." He handed her a small crystalized stone.
"This is so pretty. Bert works for the geology department." She saw the snarl in Sheldon's face, and she immediately frowned at him, signaling to him to shut his mouth.
"Yeah. Well, see ya." Bert said.
But before he left the room, Amy shouted. "Oh, you forgot your quartz."
"Oh, it's okay. I want you to have it. Bye. " With those words, he retired from the room.
"Amy? A geologist? What happened to you? " He sat on the chair.
"He's nice." She smiled at him and returned to the board, putting the rock into a bowl full of colorful rocks, probably from the same man.
From work, Sheldon was dropped off by Amy at the front of his building since Leonard was still waiting for his mom at the conference. He eats dinner alone and showers in bed. He checked all the lights and locks of their apartment and went to his room.
He kept hearing Amy and Bert's words.
...my boyfriend. That should've been him. If only.
...I want you to have it. For God's sake, what kind of gift is a rock? A rock! If he were to give Amy a rock, he would get a rock of carbon with the atoms stacked neatly into a shiny trinket whose primary purpose is to put on her head.
...he's nice. He knew that guy, Bert, liked Amy more than just a friend. Fortunately, Amy didn't realize it. He could've done something to prevent that guy from visiting her.
To distract himself, he read Action Comics #600, in which Superman and Wonder Woman get their own date, and Superman kisses her after seeing her, though Diana is taken aback because she wasn't expecting it.
He grabbed another comic books, Batman # 39 & 40, because it was still early for his bedtime. Wonder Woman admits that she finds Batman appealing, and the two lean in for a kiss but hold back due to their devotion to their partners.
After finishing his picture books, he turns off the lamp and sleeps. He dreamt about Amy wearing an Amazonian costume kissing him as the Dark Knight.
Penny is hanging out with Beverly when Amy drops by. She didn't have the chance to track the time. The two scientists looked at each other, Amy nodded, but Beverly just moved her glasses. The neurobiologist brought takeout dinners for two, so they cut it out for three people.
From the moment Amy entered the apartment, no one said anything except for her. She tried to engage them in an average conversation, entering topics like shoes or how cute little Chinese babies are.
It's getting chilly in her apartment even though she serves all three of them glasses of hot tea. She sensed the aggravation between the two.
"Okay, that's it! Beverly! Amy! Put down your phone." She can not handle this night any longer.
She went to the kitchen to get the two unopened bottles of vodka from the kitchen and two shot glasses from the sink, placing them on the coffee table.
"Let's settle this war. Both of you have a chance to state your case one by one. Here are the rules, you drink and say your concerns to her, " she looked at Beverly. "And you, same." Then point at Amy. She filled up the small glasses.
Both of them denied Penny's way, but she didn't buy any of their drama. She insists that this is the only way to finish this heated speechless battle.
First shot.
"Yikes," Beverly said after drinking the vodka straight. "How dare you insult my books and my integrity as a psychiatrist?"
Penny smiled as Beverly showed some emotions in this conversation.
Then, Amy took her vodka. "First, it was a comprehensive criticism. Next, I've sent you some inquiries and I haven't received any response. I don't have anything to say, I'm waiting for your answers. "
She can see it in Amy's eyes that she is prepared to meet Leonard's mother. The neurobiologist wanted this to happen.
Second shot.
"Ugh. To answer your first question, from Leonard's childhood, he displayed an unresolved oedipal complex, a boy who acts possessive of his mother and tells the father not to touch her. " She looked at Penny, defining the terms she didn't understand. "I considered different approaches when he was growing up, but all of them failed. He'll interrupt all aspects of my life, seeking my attention. 'Mommy, please hug me.', 'Mommy, sleep in my bed.' When he was six years old, he walked in on me and his father naked. I was swatting Alfred's bottom with Leonard's brand new Ping Pong paddle. So I tried to distance myself so his father could be a role model to develop his super-ego. "
Amy gulped her second shot. "He's getting better now, and you're still teaching him how to earn your affection."
Third shot.
"Of course I did, it's a mother's job to make sure her child's self-esteem is not dependent on her love." Beverly looked at her. "Next are your second and third questions. My parenting skills are effective based on Leonard's brother and sister's accomplishments. His brother recently argued a case before the Supreme Court, and his sister successfully grew a human pancreas in an adolescent gibbon. "
"Interesting for you to mention Mother's Job. You utilized some aspects of authoritarian and uninvolved parenting on Leonard as a child, and the outcome of your actions on him is having very low self esteem."
Fourth shot.
"Another way to look at it is that he accomplished some points in his field too, which reflects that my parenting methods are effective." Penny noticed Beverly kept blinking her eyes. A complement of Leonard's achievement, what alcohol could do, she thought. "You are right. My neurological experiment didn't work on him, so I needed to, as the street people said, up my game and do phase three. I used reverse-reverse-reverse psychology. I intend to teach him how to develop his superego on his own, rather than relying on the people around him. It's for his own good. "
The waitress kept filling their glasses. Most of the words they said sounded new to her, but she needs to finish this.
"How about the book He's Doing It On Purpose: Raising a Teenage Bed-Wetter?" She can see Amy's irritation.
Fifth shot.
"Yes. At that time, I was only a doctor of psychiatry. We went to get him a checkup with the urologist, neurologist, and endocrinologist. So what I did is put him into therapy under one of my colleagues. The only reason he's doing it is to get my attention, reflecting on his, again, Oedipus complex. "
Knock, knock, knock. Penny!
Knock, knock, knock. Penny!
Knock, knock, knock. Penny!
"What's the gist, physicist?" Penny opened the door.
Sheldon saw the women inside having drinks. He had to act for Amy, but how? He walked close to the girl-slash-friend's chair.
"Beverly, look, I'm sorry, but I have to defend Amy to you." He said. "I am living proof that my mother's method of raising children with unconditional love and nourishment can result in a child with more resilience, wellness, self-esteem, and neurodevelopment."
"What is happening here!" Leonard burst from the outside. He saw his mother and girlfriend drinking and thought, what is Sheldon doing here?. He walked toward Amy to get her. He held her hand while lifting from the single seater. "Mother, don't intimidate my girlfriend, I would never allow it."
"Leonard, Sheldon. I can protect myself. Please both of you leave this apartment. " The guys looked at her skeptically.
"But." "No." they said.
She stared at them, making a warning to leave, or they would surely hear something from her. Leonard never saw this side of Amy's face. He knew they were in trouble if they didn't follow her request. "Sheldon, let's go. If she wants us out, we'll honor her request."
"But Amy needs our help." Leonard dragged the skinny physicist outside, where they stayed trying to eavesdrop between the walls.
Beverly was taken aback by Leonard and Sheldon's reactions. So much about this girl has control over both physicists. Sheldon was very fond of Amy, and he brought her up each time they had a scheduled conversation.
How many shots did she consume? Maybe 5 to 6, as she was feeling lightheaded and dizzy. They started taking shots again.
"Does he have difficulty maintaining erections?" She noticed Amy blushing. Finally, she got the neurobiologist intimidated. "He's battled intimacy issues his whole life."
"I haven't. We haven't. It's a private topic. I don't think that's an appropriate question. "
"I've never seen Leonard so happy. During my conference yesterday, he kept smiling and texting you. He's so proud he had a neurobiologist girlfriend. He informed them of your achievements and your research about primate addiction and quantum cognition theory." She inhales deeply. "Perhaps, your conclusion is valid. I'm a disappointed mother. I should've accepted who he is instead of dictating who I wanted him to be. "
Amy remained speechless. She had to thank Penny for adding alcohol to this equation.
"I wrote a paper disproving quantum brain dynamic theory years ago. But when I read your paper with Sheldon, giving it a different perspective. I must say, you have a great chance to prove it."
"What just happened?" Penny shouted, unable to process Beverly's disinhibitions. She stared at Amy, wanting some answer.
"Dr. Hofstadter, I have to apologize for my email. I've seen Leonard suffer from the effects of his childhood. Honestly, I blame you for that. But it's still not a good excuse to disrespect you. " Amy offered her hand.
"I'm afraid so. Your apology is accepted. I hope Leonard can forgive me. " She meant it and accepted Amy's hand.
They lost count on their shots, but they kept drinking, bonding at least through the first bottle. The fact that Beverly don't have a lot of what they would call girlfriends, making this conversation enjoyable.
Amy was taking Penny's couch while the other two slept on the bed. She kept thinking about the outcome of what she did.
Amy: Leonard, are you awake?
Leonard: Yes, do you want to have some tea?
Amy: Okay. Open the door.
She watched him heat the kettle as she got two chamomile tea bags.
"I heard your conversation after we left. And Sheldon forwarded your email to my mother. " After the tea, he sat on the opposite side of Sheldon's spot while Amy's head was in his lap, cuddling her to sleep. He moved the strands of hair out of her face. His teary eyes glanced at her. "Oh, my God, you are amazing. I mean, I don't deserve you."
"You don't have to earn my affection. It's all yours. "
A bit longer. I know this isn't a Lenny or a Shamy fanfic, but the fandom's support has been incredible. Thank you very much.
