Full Moon – Chapter 3
I should have known that having the Cullens back into my life, meant getting a bunch of stuff I didn't need, didn't want, and would never be able to afford by myself. But for the first time, that didn't bother me at all.
It was Christmas in October. Emmett sat on my floor opening every single box of a video game console existent, and showing me all the different types of games, they have gotten with it. Jasper presented me with a portable projector, that I really liked, that we would be using for movie nights. Alice had gotten me hundreds of new clothes, bed sheets, pillows and blankets, while Esme had gifted me a new microwave for my room, and a new professional coffee machine.
"You know, my birthday was like two weeks ago." I commented, trying to clean up the bags and wrapping papers from my floor. "And you guys didn't need to do this at all, it's not like I have time for games and movies, when I have school and work."
"We will find you time for this. We missed you, and we don't want to miss anything in your life anymore. So, we are going to be around for as long as you want us. And if you think that those two over there will sit thru girl talk, hair braiding, and movie nights without a couple video games to entertain them, you're wrong. This is more for us than you, trust me." Alice says, helping me clean. "Oh, Edward is here!" She says excitedly, and the boys shoot me a quick glance with a smile, before getting their attention back to the games they were organizing on my shelf. I can't help my heart from skipping a bit when she says that, and I know they all heard, and I can feel Emmett's grin even with my back turned to him. "Boys, lunch time for the human, and I think we all have stuff to do and prepare if we want to go back to college, so say your goodbyes and let's go." Alice says.
"No, you guys don't have to go! I really like the company!" I say, meaning it. I hadn't felt this happy, human and excited about my day, in forever.
"You hear that Eddie? She really likes our company. She barely noticed you weren't here with us." Emmett said in a normal voice tone, I couldn't see Edward anywhere but I knew he could hear that. I hear a faint knock on my door and I go towards it to open it. Edward was standing on my door way, freshly showered, looking like the perfect Greek god statue, holding more bags in his hands. My heart went crazy again. I still wasn't used to having him back in my life. "Never mind, we don't make her heart go a thousand miles per hour Jazz, we are going to have to work better on our side smile and that fuckboy hair." Continued Emmett, making me laugh a bit, but still my focus was on Edward.
"Don't let Rosalie hear you saying that Emmett, she's all nice and friends with Bella, you don't want to destroy that." Said Jasper, getting up quickly and using his vampire speed to finish what he was doing before. "After all, she's already sad she couldn't be here today, you don't want to poke that bear."
"Poking the bear is my specialty." Said Emmett, making everyone laugh. Oh, inside joke, got it. "Alright Bellita, we are going to go, but don't expect us to be away for long, you got the new games I want to play, and I will return for them." He gives me a hug before moving towards the door. Jasper says bye and leaves behind Emmett, leaving me, Edward and Alice in the room.
"Don't you dare touching the bags I put in your closet, those are for later. Make sure to eat and rest, and I'll stop by after Rose's shift." Said Alice, giving me a hug and going towards the door. "And you, respect her human boundaries, she needs sleep and she is tired, so no keeping her awake." She points to Edward, then winks at me and leave, closing the door behind her. I turn to Edward and he's smiling holding a bag.
"Half Caesar Salad, extra parmesan and dressing, half BLT with extra tomatoes. And a strawberry crush." He says, presenting me with the food. I'm completely confused now. "Alice saw what your order would be, so I just went and grabbed it." He answered to my confusion. "You really need to get back on the vampire tracks."
"Oh well, if you hadn't left, I wouldn't have gotten unused to it. Wait, I'm sorry, that was mean, I shouldn't have said that."
"You are not wrong though." He looks sad, but still offering me my food. I grab it from his hands and we move towards my bed so I can sit and eat. "I did leave, and we didn't really discuss everything that happened because of that, or everything that happened when I left. You mentioned it getting really hard, and understanding my side, and getting on with life, but you never said how hard it actually was." He starts, as I take a full bite on my sandwich. It takes me a couple minutes to chew the food and swallow while I thought about what he meant, and I know what to answer.
"I don't think I want to talk about it. Or think about it, right now. It was hard, really hard, and it got better and easier with Jake and therapy. I think that's all that matters. You are here, we are together, I understand why you did what you did, but I don't think I want to get back to those memories and mental space, because I really don't want to feel that way ever again. Maybe one day we can talk about it, just not now." I take another bite, making my point of the subject being done, and he understood it. I was glad he didn't push me any further.
"Well, on the getting used to vampires subject, Alice and Jasper are going to get us enrolled into some classes with you. We didn't actually plan on going to college, as Rosalie is supposed to be doing her residency here and we didn't want the age difference between the siblings to be too weird. But as long Emmett is enrolled in a master's program, and me, Alice and Jasper are seniors, I think it's all good." He offers me my drink as he sees I'm having a little bit of an issue swallowing it.
"Emmett? In a master's program? What?" I question, kinda confused.
"It wouldn't be his first. Emmett and Rosalie are the only ones that can actually look old enough for that without people questioning it. Emmett is very smart, although sometimes it might not seem that way. And Rosalie is extremely dedicated when studying is the subject. She actually has a couple really good degrees, and medicine has been one of her passions for a while. When she decided that she wanted to work with women's health, Carlisle was very happy to move the straws for it being possible. She is a fully graduated doctor, but if we wanted to stay here longer, she would have to start as low as possible. We faked some transcripts, and she got into med school here for her final years and residency, reason why we moved. None of us actually planned going back to college this time though, we were all… Healing." He looks at me before continuing. "Of course, we are all good now, and excited to join you for this experience."
"You guys don't have to. I'll still be around; we don't need to be together 24/7."
"Trust me, we want to. And it will be way more fun than hanging around the house doing nothing all day and night, Esme was starting to get tired of us." He laughs, and I smile. "Unless you don't want us to. If you think we are suffocating you or anything like that, we won't." He sounds worried.
"No, I'd love to have you guys around, I don't ever want to be apart from you again. I just don't want you to change your plans because of me. Going to college again must suck." I try not to sound scared that they will leave me again, but I know I've failed when I see his face crash a bit, and he holds the one hand I have free while drinking my smoothie.
"It's not that bad. I really want to learn more anyways, and I've decided to try a really interesting major this time, care to guess what it is?" I can see that the thought of it amuses him, and I try to figure out what would be interesting for a 100+ years old vampire.
"Astronomy?" I guess, and he laughs.
"No. Although, that does sound interesting, maybe one day. It's something more related to my… gift." He winks, and I look around my room trying to guess what, in between the tons of new things I got today, was Edward's gift to me. He realizes what I'm doing and laughs out loud. "Not a gift like that Bella. You really are rusty on the vampires subject. I meant the mind reading. I'm going to be studying Psychology."
"Oh, yeah, that's actually perfect for you. But wouldn't the mind reading be considered cheating, on the psychology field? I'm sure it's considered stepping over patients' boundaries, reading their minds."
"Probably, but it's also considered invasion of privacy in all other situations, so it isn't that different. Jasper and Emmett do seem to consider it unfair though, but it isn't like I'm planning on practicing it anyways." I stop and analyze what he meant with that. They are always in school. The oldest they can pass by is as college students. They don't work at all.
"Doesn't that get extremely boring? Learning so many different things, being capable of doing so much, but not actually practicing any of it? Have you ever had a job like that before? Like Rosalie does right now?" I ask, deeply curious.
"I've done residency, a couple times. Rosalie and I did it together, the first time, a few decades ago. We thought it would be easier if we stick together, to keep each other on the line. I've also worked with Esme in some different projects, but nothing that would bring attention to us. We all have dipped our toes in different areas and jobs before, but the oldest we pretend to be, faster we have to leave the place, and it just isn't practical."
"But wouldn't you want to do it more often, instead of high school and college?"
"Yeah, I'd for sure love to do it more often. But every time we move, it is a whole new badge of fake documents, a new backstory, name changes, finding somewhere that is dark enough but that we haven't been to in at least a few decades. It's a lot of work for just a couple years or less." I know he's trying to be neutral about the whole moving around and how much that sucks, but I can see that he is a little sad talking about the subject. I wonder if it has anything to do with the last time, he decided to leave a place, leaving me behind, and what them moving around so much, meant to me and my future.
"What was the last job you had?" I ask, trying to lighten up the mood a bit, and taking the last bite on my sandwich.
"Last year, after I finally got to kill Victoria, and I had nothing to do or occupy my mind with, I actually bought a small music shop to work with Jasper. We knew we weren't going to stay in town for long anyways, and Jasper has been working a lot on his restraint, so we thought it would be a nice idea. That way, he had a lot of contact with people in the store, and I had something to occupy my days. It was nice, even if it was just for a few months." He smiled at me before continuing. "Do you like your job?"
"Being a secretary isn't my dream job, but it pays the bills. I did get a scholarship and Charlie did offer to help me with whatever I needed, but you know how important my freedom is to me. Answering a couple calls a day, organizing meetings and schedules, and filing documents is very easy though, so nothing to complain here." I shrug.
"And you can balance that okay with all your classes?"
"Yeah, it's only a part time job, and I have enough free time to study and part take in a couple college activities. Helps keep my mind always busy, and the thoughts away from dark places, so I couldn't ask for anything better right now." I finish all my food and drink, but make no move to leave our comfortable sitting positions and discussion. "Although, I am pretty sure I will need to work around my schedule now, to fit all of this." And I use my arms to demonstrate all the new things his family brought into my dorm room. He laughs.
"They can get carried away sometimes. Emmett has all those games at home too, and I'm sure he has finished them all by now. It was pretty much just an excuse for them to spend some time with you, so you don't need to worry about this if you don't want to."
"I love it. I'm not that into people expending money with me, and I won't use half of it, but I love how excited they were just to show up, and show me all of this, and set it up. I never thought I'd expend that much time with Emmett and Jasper just talking and chilling, and it was nice. I missed your whole family, and I feel so much more included now."
"Didn't you feel welcomed before?" Said him, taking my lunch trash away and coming back to sit by my side on the bed.
"I felt welcomed. And I knew they loved me, although Rosalie was a giant question mark in my mind, but I think today was the first time I actually saw them taking me into the family as part of it, and it felt really good. So no, I don't mind the gifts at all." I lay my head on his shoulder.
"I'm sorry you didn't feel like part of the family before. Rosalie was being a bitch as only she can be, Jasper was still having issues with his control, and Emmett really didn't want to piss off Rose. But you are a part of the family Bella. Trust me." He pulls me closer to him, so we are cuddling in bed. A yawn, realizing how comfortable he made me feel, and how tired I was from all the excitement today. "Nap time for the human, or Alice will kill me." He says laughing.
"I don't want to sleep, not just yet. I like talking to you." I say, but I know I'm starting to doze off.
"Alright, so I have another question for you, about something you mentioned earlier." He said, his voice a bit more serious, and I'm a bit worried. I give him the sign to continue and he moves us a bit to look at my face. "Who is Jake?"
"Oh."
