Impossible sights
*Chirp-chirp*
*Chirp-chirp*
The crickets sang their mellow tune. Hung over blades, replete with dew; chirp-chirp; they sang in choir their tune.
!
A set of pressing footsteps tagged along their notes! Not alert, not squeaky, not even on their frequency. Dully they mellowed on across their serenading spot.
Two silhouettes, one small and one tall, made their steady way across the grassy range. Their camp made not too far away, they had to travel just enough to lose its casted light.
It would be well worth it.
Or at least that was the premise that got her out at this ungodly time, on these plains when the night was so deep that raising a hand before you became synonym with trying to see through a brick wall.
"Being so late out and about… when knowing we need rest… the-hhaaa~" A drawn out yawn infiltrated her tired speech. Heard in the dead of night, out on expansive fields and away from any settlement or city, that sound might as well have been a baritone in comparison to the crickets' chirping.
Mh, no.
A bad example if it were put like that though. Making such a disservice to the adorable voice wouldn't do, not even in the intimacy of the mind's space! Therefore, that offense would soon be remedied.
"He-heh! Don't sound so grumpy about it. I can promise what I'm about to show you will be more than worth it! We're almost there." Replying with vigor, the taller figure of the two squeezed a smidgeon harder on the diminutive hand it held. "Tonight, at such a place we'll get a scenery like you can never imagine! I'm not wasting this opportunity no matter how sleepy you are. I'll drag you across if I've gotta!"
"When coming down to promises, bribing Betty's heart with them translates in no advantage, I suppose." Indignantly retorted the adorable spirit while staring a drowsy storm at her contractor. Unfortunate however that her gesture went unnoticed due to the impenetrable dark. Blushing in accordance with that realization, the great Yin spirit only gripped harder in turn on the hand she held while trying to make anything out of her immediate surroundings.
The best she could manage for that however was their outline, like forms of ink blurring from the ground up, contrasting against the cloudy heavens separated from them. Beatrice never thought that a moment would arrive were she'd use painting ideas as a point of comparison.
"Even you, Beako? I get the deal about it… but I swear you're all just blowing it out of proportion~" Subaru's remark went unacknowledged once he determined through the dark how Beatrice's head turned away.
"If Subaru does not mend that bad habit of his, it will not be Betty's fault she stops to lauder you, in fact!" With a stomp she enforced her opinion, giving her best at replicating the saying of 'putting your foot down' all while undoubtedly pouting somewhere in that deep dark.
"Why you…" Subaru's grin, unnoticeable in the night, only grew the more he heard the spirit's uncontestable affectionate words. Only Beatrice would hide behind the finger and try at making herself seem to deliver what must've been attempts at tough love in such a way. If it was intentional or not to fail in doing so was unimportant. Right now, Subaru was to joyous to try and tease her about it.
"Ok, that's it. You're not only talking me behind my back with Emilia-tan but you're also trying to act all cool about this~?" Turning suddenly on the stationary spirit girl whilst making sure to appear as large as possible with the arms stretched wide: "Halley-hoo!"
"Hnyyaaa!"
Having clomped Beatrice in a bearhug, Subaru hefted his contracted spirit up and twirled without a care in the dark!
Twirling and twirling, shrugging off whatever sway sleep still held of the blonde in his arms, Subaru laughed outwardly with crystal clarity, forgetting anything else just for a passing moment. Along his laugh, the cute cries of surprise and embarrassment, soon turned in giggles, mixed in to make a hog-posh of sounds in the middle of nowhere.
He could permit himself this. He was far away enough from the others to laugh; no one to see this except Beatrice. She already knew enough that further damage to his image couldn't be made. Much to his chagrin knowing he couldn't even showoff to this little girl.
That he was goofing off? That he laughed without really needing a reason more than someone's presence?
It was a blissful experience.
The petite blonde's giggles slowly mellowed down.
So knew Beatrice as she only clung more strongly to him, nestling her head over his shoulder and encompassing his torso as best her little arms could. Aware of the plights that plagued Subaru's conscious, but not granted the answers to their origin or his drive to maintain, the great Yin spirit could only try her best at comfort like so. Just being there.
Mending back his unremorsefully abused flesh.
Ensuring her presence, even if unrequested, would smother away the fears given authority during the night.
Simply being here… was momentarily all she could do.
How vexing, wasn't it?
That instead of occupying her thoughts with only the shining goodness of their days ever since forging a pact to defy the notion of time, these murky blights took the limelight.
'How stupid! How inane! How hopeless!' She'd berate him over and over and over in her head and in reality, distraught over the truth this moment held, in spite of its heartwarming charm to any outside eye. It was so twisted, she would've cried. And if at any point now she'd admit her regret of maintaining Subaru's insidious secret of self-maiming against Emilia's sincere care and worry, she'd start wailing.
If not for a sense of clarity to overtake the storm:
"I've made it a tradition by now to stuff your head full with stories during the night, eh?" Suddenly spoke up Subaru. His earlier laugh having died down and his movement having halted, the young knight spoke as if having shed away that which would torment him in secret. The incandescent rise of passion that seeped in his tone came out of nowhere.
Of course it would.
'Ah, so another favorite, in fact. That's why we're out.' Having unveiled the answer in her thoughts, Beatrice rose her head towards the sky above. From her position, still tightly held, the once eternal librarian assessed the murky skies. Peeking at places through low hanging clouds, the shimmers of stars smiled down at them.
"Being inside a comfy bed and looking through a large window is good and all for a bedtime story feel." A snort seeped through his grin. "But…" Reaching a hand carefully in order to not shift the security of his hold on the blonde, Subaru clasped one of her hands: "Murak."
…
…
…
"Taking a stroll through the hall of eternity just can't be beat on the emersion points!"
The low hanging clouds were nowhere in sight. The temperature shifted if only slightly, not that she could be affected. The inky dark connecting them to the earth dissolved. And wind whirred gently past her ears. But most importantly: They could be seen in their full brilliance!
Indeed, beautiful were the stars…
The sight unveiled to them was one unlike no other of its specific kind. Being so close to almost believe the illusion of touch and worry about the intensity of their heat, the eternal stars bathed them in their full splendor.
"Usually, back in my home you'd get to see vistas like these with the help of special 'contraptions' that may as well be a dream here, or if you're lucky like us when far-far away." Subaru's face at last became illuminated enough to see. His piercing eyes and natural scowl held no turbulent secret and hid no deep confliction. With a subtle quirk of the lips up and the onyx of his hair drinking in the night… it was clearly a shame. A shame that only on rarities such as these Subaru looked so. On rarities such as these, there were no self-conscious considerations on his part.
A shame indeed.
Such a sight, was rare.
"Now!" He started with a bright attitude, tracing with a finger the outlines that made up what Beatrice came to know from her contractor as constellations. "For those select few of the ages past that left enough of a mark to ignore time, a crowning place like those between the stars was their reward." Oozing with nearly palpable admiration, Subaru weaved a tail as only Beatrice would hear. And ever since their eternal binding set over burning forsaken books, Beatrice received such unrivaled recounts spoken with innocent awe. Only fitting for that symbolic 'sacrifice' of accursed knowledge in exchange for something that earnestly remained attached to her.
In every way, excluding their fantastical means of levitation… this was but a little girl's story time.
"Betty's Subaru speaks highly of what must be tattered remnants from legends, that couldn't even manage to achieve their happy ending. What is so special to their deeds that makes them so unparalleled when dwarfed by Betty's Subaru and Betty's achievements, I wonder?" The irritated reply was delivered through puffy cheeks along an astonished tonality that smashed against Natsuki's ear.
"I think it's pretty obvious how Beako's infinitely more amazing than whatever I could try and come up with, no questions asked. But, it's not really those legend guys that I'm occupying my head with…" Shook Subaru his head briefly from side to side like clockwork after glancing about with no set focus, making it incredibly easy for Beatrice to read him like an open book and know how he was stuck in the process of choosing his words.
"But, what I wonder most times about is: Say, Beako…Do you think we'll get a seat there too?" Was his wistful question. His eyes furtively peeking from their corners at her expression told her everything.
Having been asked such an odd and out of the blue thing, Beatrice could only raise an eyebrow. She wasn't dumb. Heh, by far the worst thing to ever accuse her of.
Her eyes caught on to the subtle context. Knowing Subaru and his infuriatingly roundabout ways of probing for opinions to his self, this only made Beatrice huff. She disliked this with a passion. No, she positively loathed it.
Why couldn't he just forget about what others thought?
Why did he have to act so ambiguously instead of behaving freely?
What good did it do to concern himself with worthless problems?
In any case, her answer was simply obvious.
"Why should Betty's Subaru care about seats or places anywhere else besides here right now, I wonder? Not that it matters in any way, Betty will still be with Subaru, in fact." As much as her warm little frame allowed, her hold tightened.
"…"
Holding that little and warm bundle too sweet to even believe she was of this world, proved to be the response in itself.
That answer, a direct counter to his roundabout wonder, was just right.
"…"
"Huh… look at you, Beako! If you keep thwarting my delusions with reality-checks like this I'll start worrying you'll literally grow up and one day leave."
"Hmph! How stupid of Betty's Subaru to entertain any such train of thought, I suppose."
Subaru turned his head to clearly look at the little girl. Blinking once, twice, thrice, he let a snicker pass him before accepting to nod his head. A dumb smile plastered on his mien, and eyes molded to a pacifying quality once embracing a gentle look.
The focus held over the Yin magic had some time ago began to falter, thus their descent from among the stars soon would reach the inky black earth beneath. Along with a sooner ending to their story time than usual.
But, looking at it from one way, it was alright. They had a voyage towards the Pleiades to make and sleep was essential for the journey.
"God damn, Beako… you stole the scene so well I even forgot my story!" After gently making contact with the earth and renouncing Murak's effects on themselves, Subaru released Beatrice from his hold and began to tread back to camp hand in hand. His amazed and yet obviously prideful statement only further fed the cute blonde's ego as noticeable in her puffing out her chest with a gleeful smile.
"Betty will partake in her well-deserved stories all at once upon making our safe return, I suppose. However, what had Betty's Subaru intended in revealing; I wonder?" Naturally to expect, the great spirit's greed for knowledge wasn't exactly something to brush over. It was only in her nature.
"Oh, that one? Meh, you don't have to worry, it's not the type of story I can forget about to lose its shine. That and you were right earlier. I think I was gonna say something about some dumbass named Atlas…"
…
…
…
Transitioning from a warm, quiet, dark and very gentle place, Beatrice began gathering her wits whilst still unseparated with a calming warmth. Calming, but not relieving or sufficing.
With passing seconds, clarity began to redefine her surroundings and feeling returned to her short limbs. Enough tactile sensation to remember her place of dozing.
Extending a tiny hand towards the lithe arm embracing her such that she remained secure in her temporary perch, Beatrice made contact with cold, cold, skin. The exposed hands whom made no contact unto her for hours now were set away from her awkward embrace. Perhaps exactly so to not bother her with its frigid aspect.
Tiredly craning her neck upwards, Beatrice took notice of bagged and tired eyes. Their splendid shine and color seeming dry from lack of sleep. The bloodshot contour drowned somewhat in that arid look the vivid amethyst Emilia sported.
"Are you feeling alright Betty-chan?" She spoke softly, mindful of the dazed great spirit.
Tilting her neck just enough so to make room for the petite blonde to right herself should she stretch a little, Emilia did not sway her focus from the task that kept her awake.
Beatrice spoke nothing. Gulping in dry and breathing deep, she turned her head left and right.
Frederica busied herself with meaningless duties, a clear sign of seeking distraction from the stillness she would otherwise confront. With her back turned, Beatrice only saw deft motions cleaning the few assortments of food left scattered over tables or what little mess littered the chamber.
The Suwen merchant continued to soundly sleep in the same position he crashed in over an armchair. Unbothered to retire tonight to his quarters while waiting on the few comrades still patrolling outside at this late time.
Anastasia laid sideways over a couch, positioned so it became difficult to interpret whether she was asleep or awake. Enveloped with a fluffy and sizeable quilt, one could barely make out a tuft of light purple hair poking through.
Atop the lump constituting the 'sleeping' Anastasia, Scarfdona rested nestled in on herself. The sight of the arctic fox still left questions on the mind of the great spirit.
…
The dark outside was perfectly calm.
"Everyone must be very tired as of late. Let's not disturb them from this chance to rest, yes?" Fidgeting in such a way on the spot, so that Beatrice sat comfortable, Emilia leaned a little more away from the vaporous armchair positioned in the chamber's center. Her hands, pointed forwards, emanated a cold breeze carried on invisible mana waves.
Ice sculptures of defined proportions and detailed features manifesting at such dexterous use of magic. Frigid statues that could only be qualified under such naming due to their material makeup. For those carvings were capable of movement and action in the image of living beings.
With patience, Emilia 'chiseled' away new additions to finalize a new ice soldier.
"Staying up all night and day to work causes impressions of admiration to the average person. Truthfully, it's blatantly undeserving of encouragement, I suppose." Grumpy. She was grumpy, and her tone was still sounding tired. Waking up to this sight from the very dark and very gentle dream she previously indulged in left Beatrice cranky.
"Mm…" Emilia nodded along with a soft hum. Softening her focused brow upon feeling satisfied with the latest forged soldier. She at least made sure the features to be as fatefully replicated as possible. Those same features that didn't suggest to a stranger's eye a delicate likeness. Rather, this intrepid appeal carried a sort of hostile air about it.
But that meant it was just right to her.
"Betty-chan must know how much of a greenhorn I am. And me struggling without any clear answer while under pressure must also worry Betty-chan." Almost lulling the great spirit back to sleep with those soft and leveled spoken words, Emilia wrapped her hands around the child's middle to bring her close. "No… Everyone is worried sick. With problems keeping to pile up, delaying more this little progress made, only makes me think. …I'm not smart enough to create a solution. I'm not strong enough to heft everyone's hopes…" With a dainty hand, she reached for the frigid surface reflecting her irises in the imprints of icy eye sockets. Resting a cold palm on an equally cold false cheek, Emilia leaned back into her chair.
"But if working just a little more in order to help those that can in turn help us? I can easily forego a few passing moments of comfort. I'm a tough girl, Betty-chan, you know." Ending with a still determined pathos, buried in the cold embers of her restless soul, Emilia sent a hand gesture impelling the frost warrior to exit the chamber and join the other creations still at work outside, in the deep impenetrable night.
…
"It doesn't matter how many toy sculptures you make to guard the crumbling duchy, if ending so tired that pushing ahead becomes impossible, in fact. Let the garrison do their intended work. And let Betty's allies rest so they focus along to find Betty's Subaru."
Beatrice swung lazily a leg from her perched spot atop the half-elf girl's lap. Casting her sight elsewhere, signaling her on-the-fence attitude regarding this subject.
"Seeking to earn others help as added search potential is a welcome tactic that Betty approves of on Emilia's part, I suppose. But reaching out for too long in hopes to keep amassing said search potential is erroneous too. If Emilia is to grow into a capable leader, then she is to first learn from past examples, I suppose. Duchess Karsten won't be a miracle addition to our cause, Betty fears."
"…"
Maintaining silence upon hearing the spirit's council, the elven girl tilted her head slowly over her shoulder. Peaking at the most likely fast asleep members of her search-group party, Emilia reluctantly had to give in this time as well to Beatrice's thinking.
Desirably from her view, Emilia would ask, search, call for help and maintain this rhythm restlessly until she'd reunite with Subaru.
Beatrice made a more than splendid work, with all the obstacles such as distance and mana deficiency in mind, to point them in the right direction towards Subaru's location.
Ram had departed alongside Roswaal with the same intent and scope as guide. However, firstly, the backing lord required to make visit unto the Barielle domains. His motives explained in the form of a request of repentance, or better said, a continuation of proof to his goodwill. As this issue of the missing Subaru and Rem gravely bared a negative effect upon him, unveiled to the camp, it was little to be said in counter. After all, this was novel! For the first time, Roswaal seemed to take an implicit stance in these matters. Until now, the clown was content to merely watching from afar the gritty work while managing the political side. Therefore, this was definitely better than nothing, even if unruly with the search-group's plan.
*!*!*!*
Heavy steps weighed down the pristine parquet of the Karsten manor. Hasty and bumbling sets of feet carried over their noise to the silent interior of the chamber, dedicated to discussion and organization.
Unsurprisingly, the door was kicked down with gusto!
"-'eckin shitstains… Better keep clear f'r now on, littl' lass. Th'm things ain't mabeast material ta play wit'. Ta' stuff's dangerous if na' fer my amazin' self ta be 'ere."
The coarse pattern of speech was the first to make itself known in the previously peaceful, but tensed, medium.
Following in tow with the fuming Garfiel, a little blur of dark colors zoomed past him towards the seated Emilia, very much determined to clomp her little arms around the spirit and elven girl. Not far behind, though approaching with a far more elegant aura, Julius peaked from behind the rudely opened door. Squinting his eyes in disappointment before easily letting go of that emotion in change for something more serious to occupy his countenance.
"-…h-oh! It's Julius. With Garfiel-kun and Meili-chan as well… Ah. Wha' must be tha report?" Struggling with a messy expression of passing surprise, Anastasia Hoshin forced herself to abandon the lulling embrace of the covers layering her in exchange to regard the agitated arrivals. Scratching away at her eyes, she hoped to banish some of the blurriness she was experiencing. Though, judging by her involuntarily pouty and soured face, it didn't seem to immediately work.
"Garf! Mh… Though I wish to reprimand you…" Fixing the stiff figure of her little brother in her sights, Frederica slowly exhaled while abandoning the chore she occupied herself with. "I also wish to hear this is also but another excess of zeal on your part."
"S'rry, nee-san." Garfiel relented to a downtrodden appeal shortly before assuming back his scowl as he set his fists on his waist. "But it ain' sumtin good."
"Mn… Garf… Ah, I see Julius-san and everyone is safely returned." Groggily awakening, Ottot made languid motions to get up from his position that remained stuck in sleep over an armchair for the better part of three hours.
"Best ya sit dis one throug' Brotto… I ain't gonna mince shit 'bout this." Waving with a dismissive motion, Garfiel nibbled on the inside of his cheek while grumbling those words.
…
"Onee-san…" Mumbling with uncertainty, Meili clenched her tiny fists around Emilia's traveling cape and stared heatedly at the ground. Her normally simple but lovely features now twisted to show a great distress. "H-…-hk…" Finding it difficult to speak, the little girl could only act with the mind of staying close to someone she felt safe around.
Atop her head, a little crimson presence poked its tail and head between dark purple tresses, peering curiously around before resolving to sway from side to side as if dancing to a silent tune. Its pincers wiggling along in the motion.
"What could it be, I wonder…?" Expressing her confusion, Beatrice hopped down to approach the shivering child and place a palm on her back. Her indifferent butterfly shaped eyes didn't transmit much emotion. But her action was certainly comforting.
Looking between his confused allies and the nearly livid Garfiel, Julius closed one eye and stood straight on the spot before budding in the conversation. Resolving that now their priority was spread of information, he'd entrust the part of reporting to their allies and his master what they came to encounter this night.
"Anastasia-sama, I shall take leave in order to consult with sir Felix upon recent developments. I entrust this same part to be explained by mister Tinsel in my absence." Bowing smoothly with but an incline of the neck before turning on his heels to leave, Julius didn't look to be holding out any better himself. Then again, his act was quite spotless to those who knew little of him. "Unfortunately, I can not safely assure everyone that tonight might still be salvageable for resting anymore."
…
Having seen and heard this new issue troubling her companions enough to leave them in need of a moment to gather their wits about, made Emilia feel as if a boulder just sank down her throat.
Getting up from the armchair, the silver-haired leader made to firstly grasp one of Meili's trembling hands before preparing to hear out what the worst could be set out for them.
"Hnh…" Grunting once in accord with thinking of a good enough way to explain, Garfiel tapped his bare foot against the floor.
"Princes-sama's d'ne a great job on t'e whol' protection front for ta lady Duchess. Dem ice soldiers did well, wha' with ta last wave o' mabeasts, sence guards fell short." Taking a hand to rub at his messy blond hair, the faction's shield made a snarl. "Ta bad dem last beasts ain't ta witch kind tho'."
"Garf…?" Frederica wrinkled her brow in expectation.
"Dem shitstains…" Moving the same hand, used to rub his hair, to retrieve what appeared to be a small and reflective shard of mundane metal from his girdle, Garfiel held tight the razor-sharp fragment that at a closer inspection looked less and less metallic.
"Dem shitstains ain't demon-beasts. Ma amazin' self recognize' dem fer it. Sir knight-dude did too."
Everyone observed how the metal edge pulsed and dripped blood from one end.
"-Demi-beasts."
"Hehehee! No~ooo! Not fair!"
"Run~run~run! Don't get caught!"
"Wa~it, stop, hold! Don't go too far!"
"Ah, the wheat, my apologies for it being ran through…"
"Pay it no mind, it's more than well worth it."
"Heh! Of course, a bigger brat will lead the smaller brats."
"Oh, hush. Spoiling the mood with such an attitude, don't act sulky."
"…"
"…"
"Felt-sama?"
Reinhard came in the view, as she lounged with folded feet over the stump of what assumingly used to be a willow.
"?"
Merely raising an eyebrow, the blonde didn't even turn her head from the view she closely took note of. Propping a hand against a knee and cheek, Felt gave a halfhearted sigh filled with disinterest. It sounded more miffed than uncaring, but that only propped the outwardly joyous knight to probe further.
"I can assure you without a margin of doubt that should you join, no measure of ill thoughts will be sent your way." Raising a hand high, parallel to the ground, the redhead gestured invitingly for his liege to join the panoramically amusing event.
"…" With minimal movement of her neck to send a particularly ugly simper filled by no small measure of disbelief, Felt spoke in a deadpan manner. "And I can assure you being sixteen equals to 'content to watch', thank you."
"Mh? I beg your pardon Felt-sama, I was convinced you were enjoying yourself in these games a mere few days prior? I myself thought it to be novel."
Understandably, Reinhard presented his confusion over his lady's sudden disinterest in the participation of games thought on the fly by his friend.
"Shadup!"
Ah, that got a rise from her.
"I'm busy…"
"May I as-"
"Busy being mad, now shadup!"
With that, it became plenty obvious to read Felt's mood. She was pissed, alright. And Reinhard minutely quirked his mouth into an unsure smile. Yup, she wasn't exactly happy with something at the moment.
Turning his head to behold the moment, Reinhard took in the rather charming situation. No, it was completely fantastic!
Lying gracefully over a colorful and fuzzy blanket, 'neath an elder tree's swaying shade, dotted over at times by piercing rays of sunshine, and laughing up a storm while closely leaning to hug by the side, were his parents. Talking for what felt like days and nights with the elder couple of Carol and Grimm Fauzen, they appeared as if ripped from another world and not of this reality.
This dream was sweet. And living for more than a few hours in it would maybe someday allow him to embrace this as the truth he experienced.
Present not that much further ways, peeking here and there, in order to appease his own sense of stoic composure, though outwardly detectible to cherish the moment, stood Wilhelm. Investing himself enough to actively take part to the conversation, his laconic speech steadily warmed into something more comfortable. The old man, fiddling in his left hand a pair of pristine white gloves, now tainted vivid green at places, surrendered his expression to one of plain satisfaction.
A certain sense of palpable peace found home in his current self. But the old coot wasn't about to go parading anything in regards to it. How sly.
And, for a most welcome piece to finish this painting of memories, Reinhard easily saw in the adjacent field of wheat that made border between the slopes of Flanders and grounds of Astrea a gleefully brimming play between his friend and gathered folk. Making exception of Flam and Grassis, how some of the close town's kids found their way in the unfolding game wasn't a big mystery. Their parents, many present being workers of the same frotting gold sea, made small talk beside the field's rim.
Distinguished in the small gathering, the almost inseparable duo of Rem and Louis kept them company, much to the blonde's dismay to be apart from the main fun.
It was positively enthralling to witness how beneath the azure sky and ripe-gold waves diminutive silhouettes poked their heads in jumps to glean floating bubbles that burst in fading rainbows.
Naturally, the ring leader was the producer of those shimmering captivations. Circled by youthful figures of nearly all ages, and mustering a great deal of convincing power, Subaru made a show of magic to entertain the gathered family. Attempting to garner a more overt sense of thrill from the taciturn twins was proving to be surprisingly difficult. So far however, he achieved the 'grand deed' of bringing at least a pleasant circle of friends for the stoic sisters to enjoy.
Pausing ad-hoc in the center mess of frolicking kids with a somewhat stiff and discouraged mien, the tarnished knight thumbed once in thought a charred ring set over his index finger, still seeping drops of water, and focused on the serious sisters that were Flam and Grassis.
Steadily gaining a slick air about him, the knight gestured for a pause. Approaching the curious kids with a look that sent the idea of telling a secret, he bent at the waist and narrowed his eyes.
"Tch~tch, I can't believe I've forgotten to warn you! How can I be such a failure?! Flam, Grassis, it's important, here, listen in a bit." Successfully drawing the two's attention, Subaru brought his ringed hand over his forehead to rub it as if in regret. "I forgot to prepare you once we got outside, there is this saying to help one have fun. You see, it goes something like:" Subaru's eyes closed and his smirk tellingly widened once the little army regarded him with expecting gazes. "Keep out an eye for mud keen ~ to keep your clothes clean!"
!
No second later he said that, with a swish of his hand over stocks of wheat, and a rippled ply of water from his forefinger, sent raindrops and chaff over the duo's unexpecting heads!
Serving as nothing more than a light graze of dirty rain, trailing behind colored vapors that thinned in nothing, the suddenness of it earned a surprised 'eep' from the victims! Causing them to belatedly react with a jump to wiggle away, only for it to be too late.
"Hi~iii! No, no, run!"
"Aaah, that's cheating, not allowed!"
"Hahaha! Run, run!"
The surrounding kids having witnessed the 'atrocity' gave a shrill whistle and dashed away!
"That's right! Whoever doesn't start making a break for it, will bare this fate forever!" Exaggerating with a loud cry, the black-haired knight fluttered his arms in mock threat through the field, aggravating the air with motes of chaff. Further incentivizing his words by causing himself the same treatment as he inflicted to the twins, in short dunking a healthy dose of water over himself, the game was set!
"Run, you fools!"
At once, he made a show of lunging towards the duo to once again bring a 'devastating shower of terror'.
"H-…nh-…hahaha!"
"Gh-hk…hehehhe!"
At last, having lost the battle of wills to resist Subaru's infectious stupidity, mustered all for this occasion, the twins shot away with a laugh, joining the mischief set in rolling waves of golden wheat.
…
"…F'cking dumbass…" Whispering in the palm of her hand, her crimson eyes held a sorrowful and furious quality.
"Well that's a little harsh…" Offering a lopsided smile, Reinhard took a seat on the swaying grass beside the candidate perched on the stump. "Having a change from what you favor Felt-sama cannot be considered spite worthy. Our current outing is not favorable for 'football' as Subaru called it. Howe-"
"Shadup, ya're no better to talk."
Unforgivingly, Felt cut down Reinhard's gentle attempt at pacifying whatever grudge the small liege might've held.
"I'm-…I'm sorry?"
"Ho-hoh! No amount o' 'sorry' 's gonna bail ya out this time."
"Um…-" Uncertainly raising a gloved hand to rub his temple in contemplation, Reinhard switched his previous easygoing expression to one more typically seen with.
"Very well, Felt-sama. If it is so, may I inquire for you to elucidate me on the matter I've wronged with?"
"…" Turning her head with yet another deadpan look, Felt didn't bother to change tonality. "Right. Anything you got to ask on a less than 'pompous riddle' reading level?"
"Mba-…" Reinhard cringed internally once his suspicions began to align.
'I grasp the sense my previous night's worries may have held true in the end.'
"Ey! Why the long faces? Did I leave you all tired from just showing how vastly swift I was just now?" The roguish call, accompanied by an equally elfish face, suddenly shook their uneven dynamic.
Casting his focus elsewhere, it was easy to tell who returned. Dirtier than before, but cheery nonetheless.
"Getting wasted in circles for an hour at children's mercy? Yeah… plenty~ admirable!" No different in humor was a reply sent in the same style to the half-elf's knight by Heinkel. "Don't forget to make a show of it tomorrow for the country! Invite the emperor too while at it! I'll make sure to show you up."
"Mere practice for when I return home, don't get yourself too stoked to jab at me yet." Retorted Subaru with a far too confident smile. "I might just blow your expectations out of the park."
"Ah! By chance, couldst thou be a parent, Subaru-dono?" An otherworldly voice joined the fray, with enough surprise to momentarily daze the younger knight. Heaving heard such a calm and candid tone certainly made one think of home. The pure heart wrenching nostalgia her voice garnered from him, unreasonable as it was to describe it so, gave rise to heavy feelings deep within Subaru. Her words following in tow, made certain the deadly combination of peace and worry strike his heart in one fell swoop. A sense of longing rooted ever since a rattling departure soon invaded his self. "Indifferently, please lend no ear to Heinkel's jokes, he is but jealous he cannot participate as freely as he'd like~."
Louanna's melodic tone and smile sent her husband's way made quick work of his feisty temper, he could do nothing but laugh and sigh with a defeated expression.
"Mh-…h. I…"
Not having been coddled in expectation to such problem to confront, Subaru quite simply was at a crossroads.
The superficial idea and sincere emotions he held most definitely could make him even sing with glee. The mere thought painted by Louanna made him want to consume the rest of his day, and the others gathered here, with tales of the two he willingly let burrow their way deep inside his heart.
To simply think of butterflies and olive green… Could miraculously, yes miraculously, change his entire way of thinking.
In fact, the gravity of such strong imagery Subaru invoked from the forefront of memory was potent enough to make him turn a blind eye to whatever doubtful and eroding apprehension he considered in balance to the happiness previously contemplated. Therefore, on the other hand he intended to consider, he could think nothing anymore to object. Just a lump of uncertainty to shape his answer into words set itself in his neck.
"If I'm a par-… Heh… What a thing to dream…" Quickly grasping his chin, a pose he'd normally adopt when thinking, with a palm still protected by wraps, Subaru roughly rubbed left and right at his skin while muffling to some degree his words. It perhaps was sufficient to hide his loss of cool.
"Well, I guess you could say I've taken a liking to act as close to that for two little angels… but-"
"Truly? Oh, and, per chance have you admitted such as well to them?"
"I-I, well, I believe I've 'had?' my moments to say I love them. …At least to Beako…" He murmured the last comment. "If that's what you mean. Heh! Though, don't think me worthy enough of that title." Subaru made sure to end his reply as fast as possible with a well-placed laugh to smoothen his answer.
"Mm… following such a way of secrecy to feelings so admirable, this I cannot encourage. Subaru-dono, please don't take too much after our house's examples of tough love." Saying so, Louanna's green eyes nearly sparkled with mischief after earning an exaggerated groan from the knights' commander and gruff murmur from the eldest Astrea. Thank whatever gods still lingered in this world for her not knowing more beyond the past she lived. "I must ask you to be open on such matters in order to truly value those you treasure."
"Heheh, so, is that it then?" Heinkel's mien turned meditative. "Return after the escapade of all time and spoil the runts you spoke of rotten? Tch…" His smile though, readily became slick. "Should I bother today to dig your grave with mentioning her to Louanna here? I believe out of us all, she's the best to offer advice. Might want to keep your ears sharp."
He played dirty, that bastard! Maybe it was just a bit too soon to think he changed that much.
"Should I bother to ask why you just lounge around instead of putting what you claimed into practice? Here I am, still uncontested even though you boasted about showing me up!" Natsuki immediately saw an opportunity to escape the progressively heavier sensation the course of discussion had him experience and saved himself through another sly silver-tongued retort by recalling on Heinkel's previous claim.
"Please! If I start showing the brats who's who and dethrone you with nearly all the town for witness? Hmf! I'll lose face in the long run for not being gallant."
"How chivalric of you… Oh yee, great leader!" With an eyeroll, Subaru played along before changing his attention to the more silent onlookers. In special to the one glaring his way with the power to ugly-fy if possible.
"And? What's your excuse? I get Heinkel can't dump all his cool points this early in front of us, but what got you so scared?"
"I dunno, maybe the same thing that got you so dumb?"
Felt simply pulled no punches today it seemed.
"Wow! Who pissed in your bed, sis? Is it right to assume today's not as pleasant of a starter?" Subaru widened his eyes a tad after the quick jab. Raising his hands as in surrender, he approached the duo of knight and candidate.
"…-hk!" A complicated appeal flashed over the girl's likeness hearing that retort.
In accordance to the spite freshly developed not but a night prior, she narrowed her eyes. Those features shaded to a hollow likeness openly mocked her! Around the eyes a bluish hue, thin lines drawn at the mouth's corners, hair halfheartedly styled, cheekbones protruding from a thinner visage, all those things paraded before her like medals of honor boiled her blood.
Clenching her fists subtly over her folded legs, her dour glare reflected anger once leveling itself upon 'pristine' cloth pathetically explained as 'fashion decorations' to his forearms. Having subscribed many years to a lifestyle of thievery reinforced in her the need for attention. She wasn't stupid! Playing with water and chaff for a joke was one thing. And making use of it as second-rate concealer against the budding red stains beneath the seams was another.
"Mnt… No dice? Okie, okie, how about you, Rein? What do you say we crack Felt up in a laugh with something?" Rubbing the charred ring surface by his attire, Natsuki tried his luck with another approach. "Quick Rein, give me a piggyback ride!"
"The sheer fact of how such a solution arrived to be your first decision does not fail to surprise me." Laughing in kind to the pointless, though perhaps effective, solution, the knights took to banter before the miffed royal candidate.
"Of course, doesn't even take a blink to sync in, no…?" Grumbled the blonde.
"Oi! What's that meant to be?" Naturally, Emilia's confidant wasn't too lenient to that snark input.
"It means what it means! Now you two just make sure to be less dumb than usual and play house while I go and talk with Carol. Cool? Better yet, just stick around and don't leave my eyesight…" Muttering at the end after rubbing her head, Felt sent the two knights what could've amounted to a pruning scowl before leaping off the stump to trudge towards the maid.
"-Uh, a-alright?" Shrugging as he checked in on Reinhard with a side glance, only to earn nothing beyond a clueless look, Subaru took slow steps behind the young candidate.
"Ah! But not that close!" Turning on her heels to point straight at his chest with a nervous composure, Felt stuttered before continuing. "B-guh, and you!" Pointing at her knight only earned the ever-formal reply of a smile. "You especially! Stay like, ten paces away, and do something. The both of you!"
Having them overhear anything wouldn't do any good as of now. Her paranoia was at an all time high.
"Keep that up sis, and next time I'll turn my attitude around! See if you'll like it!" Cupping a hand near his mouth and mocking a faraway call to the blonde, Subaru slyly smirked once regarded with a burning stare from the distancing Felt.
"Subaru… I believe our best decision would be to not provoke lady Felt's simmering ire any further." Resting a gloved palm on the younger knight's shoulder, the message was starting to become clear.
"You know something's wrong?"
"I believe I suspect what is wrong, unfortunately… therefore we should confirm first and foremost."
"Making it sound so bad isn't making me any calmer, but still… Seeing Felt act at least this stingy, but lively, can't be that bad! She's still pretty normal by her standards."
"Subaru… this must regard our last night perusal after retiring to the library." Intoning with a more hushed tone after leaning in, Reinhard's visage assumed a dour appeal. "It would serve best to clarify lady Felt about what may have been misunderstood."
"Mh? You say she saw what we locked for in the library? Never took Felt for the studious type."
"I cannot say for certain. Yet, in all likelihood, a wrong impression could have been left by us without the context of selection to your requested books."
Subaru's glabella scrunched minutely. A corner of his mouth quirked up in displeasure. And after a small sigh, his head turned towards Wilhelm.
It was true, he intended to get his clarifications from the old sword demon regarding the jigsaw puzzle he began to make of the old resurgences from the demi-human war. After having come into contact too many times with vestiges of those events, in the form of undead soldiers and references connecting to the Witch Cult, it became natural to make a move and educate himself on this field. By now it wasn't passible to chalk it up to mere coincidence.
And so, it wasn't unreasonable for Felt to have caught on his retellings to Reinhard when at its most suspicious.
"I know Felt has all the right to be defendant and on guard for of old man Rom. Now more so that he openly supports her race for the throne even in the territory of what were once enemies of cause. But I'd like to think us looking up some names like Libre and Sphynx doesn't wash away who we are." Subaru mindlessly fiddled an empty slot under a beltloop.
In a show of rare irony, contradicting their very idea of confronting a misunderstanding, the two knights mulled over a remedy for an illness that did not exist. As it stood, both parties tackled entirely different fronts of worry.
Nodding to himself once and patting the new belt adorned at his waist, Subaru went to act on this assumption.
"Alright-y then. Seeing I basically dragged you in this without thinking it over, I'll go about to mend it. Problem is…"
Observing how Felt plopped herself right beside Carol and succinctly received a careful embrace from the ex-swordswoman that pulled her closer, Subaru made a stop on his train of thought and reformed his words.
"Thinking along the same lines I am?"
"I believe so, yes." Reinhard nodded, as attentive as his friend over the sight discussed. "Seeking council from a person directly involved in a problem we suspect to be our cause for distancing leads to conclude we are in the wrong."
"That could've been said so much-…" Sounding almost discouraged over a little facet not long ago spoken, Subaru exhaled an awkward breath. "So, are we sure it's about something misunderstood or you just honestly pissed Felt off with your overly noble use of vocabulary? 'Cmon, you can tell me if you want to shrug the blame~" Even though making a show by nudging his side, the joke failed to be understood by the target.
"Such a remark does hurt a little." Mimed Reinhard over his heart a massage for sore wounds.
"Never… mind." With a morose demeanor, Subaru took note of how Felt put some distance together with Carol from the talkative group. "Well, better not sulk around! How about we each go and socialize a bit, eh?" Nudging his friend, Subaru already stepped ahead.
And seeing how the opportunity was as good as ever, his steps carried him to the man he wanted to talk more at large ever since arriving this morning.
Approaching and thinking over how to even start a sudden talk without really having prepared a decent preamble, Subaru almost lagged his feet behind.
"…Subaru-dono. Is there something you wish to speak of?"
But, alas, he seemingly needed nothing special to grab the gentleman's attention. Having had once more his shoddy impressions shattered, Subaru could not help but be thankful about it.
"Hearing out Wilhelm-san's laconic pattern of talk really doesn't fail to impress." Finding it in himself to stiffen his back and forego his unsure attitude, Subaru assumed a relaxed expression. "What do you think?"
"…"
Following Subaru's line of sight with his ardent blue eyes, Wilhelm easily interpreted the alluded message.
"I think…" He allowed himself a simper. "What I may think holds little value. Rather, I feel elated to live this moment."
It was greatly appreciated, no need for mentions, having been offered the opportunity to talk freely while mindful of his bothersome need to maintain appearances. Admitting to sensibilities of the heart made the old knight second guess his character's impression. It would not be the first time Subaru had confronted Wilhelm on such beliefs, last time more so directly.
But taking his time with it? He'd learned his lesson to postpone anymore.
Green stained gloves, held in one fist, were swayed gently as a clue. An elegant laugh sprung from the old sword demon. A truly rare event. "What I think however, is the irony in me seeing Subaru-dono postpone his own emotions."
"Begh-… What is it with today? First Felt then Wilhelm-san. I'd kind of got it from Louanna, seeing how she must be overwhelmed with the times, calling me out was an easy outlet. But getting that comment again?"
"My mistake, truly I hold little elegance with words. I meant no belittlement to Subaru-dono. This expression of mine must not be exactly friendly to transmit worry."
"No-no! Personally, I think seeing Wilhelm smile is an even cooler image, if that was possible." Supporting an arm by his waist, Subaru sent a cool, or what he hoped it was, flash of his teeth to the eldest Astrea.
Yet his pallid complexion didn't enforce his action.
"Ah. And I too personally think Subaru-dono would look much better were he more careful." Smirking with a complicated shine in his piercing blue eyes, Wilhelm patted a side of his face.
"Eh? Oh, sorry, have I said something wrong-?"
"And if Subaru-dono would stop needlessly worrying; then even better." With an unchanged tone, firm and calm, the servant of the Karsten faction placated the young knight with a serene face. "You have found yourself in a predicament, haven't you?"
Tellingly sneaking a glance at Reinhard, whom split his attention between his parents and the furtive Felt, Wilhelm gave a hum.
"You noticed? Guess Felt was unusually colder today, huh. Meh, but I'll show her up! Getting to act like a kid and stay mad all day? Maybe I let things rise to her head too much since arriving." Scoffing with a sideways, unimpressed, look was as easy as breathing after the special courses mastered along Ram for persiflage.
"I guess I'll just look over saying goodbye to her when I'll pack up to go."
"…Resolute to depart this soon?"
"Mhm." With a nod, Subaru leaned by the elder tree. "I was initially thinking to make a beeline for the capitol. Now, I'm reconsidering where to aim. It would be incredibly annoying to pass by Emilia-tan and Beako on my way."
"Lady Emilia must indeed be torn on her quest to reunite with you. Now I see the true meaning behind it." Agreed Wilhelm to himself on a debate internalized for an unknown duration. "However, though I still am of the firm opinion that Subaru-dono should relax as of late. I cannot speak on the part to not have imagined you more impatient."
"The true meaning…?" Hanged Natsuki on the specific bit. "Um, while I admit to having my ways about knowing the wellbeing of my comrades…" Closing an eye playfully, but in honesty beholding what only he could see, Subaru admired the distant motes of light that could be passed under normal circumstances as mirages or faint lightworks. "Reason as to why I'm even rethinking my destination. It also helps to keep my calm. But I have to ask: What did Wilhelm-san mean to say by his 'understanding' before?"
"Mhm, my apologies on not elaborating. Though, as you should probably come to expect Subaru-dono, those close to you have restlessly pursued any trace that could lead back to you." Smiling upon revealing such a matter as if only natural, Wilhelm patted a pocket over his suit. "Only after already having prepared my departure off from lady Karsten's duchy…" Swiftly, Wilhelm revealed the corner of a letter from said pocket before tucking it back. "That I come to regret not having personally left any indication to your whereabouts."
"Think nothing of it, Wilhelm-san. Even if it sounds impertinent from me, I'm sure Crusch must know the reason for your visit. And I wouldn't put it beyond her to know I'm here. Not when I asked Heinkel to write my name as well in it." Subaru waved away Wilhelm's regrets.
"Most certainly. However, the matter stands different considering not long before my departure a notice from lady Emilia along with lady Anastasia visiting arrived. Reason as to why I now understand her motivation."
"Hmm…" Subaru smiled faintly as he rubbed his right arm, tugging lightly on the short sleeve of his shirt. "Not too great of a way from Priestella to the duchy." Grazing over his lips with the back of his hand, Subaru straightened himself. "Wilhelm-san, would it be alright to accompany you back at Crusch's estate? Seeing as things are, it may be my best move."
Wilhelm's eyes flickered at the proposition, and with a nod: "No need for requests. It would be my pleasure to have your company."
"Phe-… We-well, please don't think that highly of me." Cringing internally at the compliment, Subaru devoted some considerable self-discipline to not openly reel back. Hearing praise was difficult to accept when one wasn't worthy of it, he reasoned. And someone such as he, upon who's conscious freshly rested the departed lives of soldiers that could've received salvation, hearing his presence was desired in any sort of measure felt misplaced.
To Subaru, knowing the context, receiving praise was an analogy equal to praising Elsa for being a person one would like to spend time with.
"I haven't earned the same eminence as Wilhelm-san has. So, I'm still unworthy of that praise. Offering replies like the ones you gave, is something more reserved for me." Scratched Subaru his wizened jaw, thankful to be distracted by the abrasive feeling of handle-wraps speckled gray and red at random.
"Mm…" Facing sideways from Subaru, Wilhelm stiffened his countenance while assuring himself to memorize the impossible view he hardly could appreciate in its entirety. He continued to restrain himself from fully surrendering to this Elysium in fear of waking to the reality he lived over fourteen years.
Watching the literal impossible.
Wilhelm currently believed people took for granted the term 'impossible'. He felt the expression in itself that described the significance of living this instant was not unfailing enough. His self, the Wilhelm he grew to change through and through, this self he managed to salvage enough to accept and be at peace with, witnessed the stuff that made dreams. No, the stuff of dreams reached within dreams.
Louanna was laughing, talking, looking, touching and loving everything she had, and still has, with as much pathos as he first saw her with his son.
His son, Heinkel, for what must've been the first in many long, long, years eased his laden likeness into the softness he only recognized from vivid memories of him in Theresia's loving embrace. …It had been that long since he personally witnessed such a thing.
And Reinhard. …He had what Wilhelm for long had accepted to be what he robbed. Though better to have later than never, Wilhelm knew the use of such consolation wouldn't have its place were he not guilty firsthand.
If those things he mulled, in a form that did not mangle his meagre soul as harshly as they ought to if spoken without pleasantries, were not regretful, then he was positively lost. Wilhelm carried many sins. Ranging from hot-blooded ones earned like an honor badge when drunk on the false glory of war efforts. Legendary deeds in service of his nation disguising in truth the ugly want and fear to permit his wife in making her own choices regarding conflict. And crowned with the letdown of a lifetime by shifting blame like a snotty brat too incapable to even hold onto what he still had. Rather having turned tail and run to drown in his own self-righteous revenge quest while his own blood struggled to reclaim the one who was not yet lost.
Honorable mentions regarding those who once shared his spot in trying times or died then were of no console.
Those, were heavy things.
Things only in recent years the sword demon tasted any true victory over. Having the ability to swing with the governance of death against that which was deemed obstacle proved… very childish, didn't it?
Confronting that which could not be won with metal but with strength of character. He never felt good at it. And subsequently, for not having at least tried, he certainly payed dearly.
Those same costs today now equated to nothing of physical substance. They only translated into a strength beyond flesh he came late to value completely. For not having done so sooner, Wilhelm felt unworthy.
All those things and in between made him feel so.
'Unworthy'. What a dour description. It felt putrid, to hear it from the one beside him.
"Unworthy. Mnh… The mention of it itself." The old knight's face wrinkled. The green-stained gloves he clenched felt ardent at touch from his own heat. "Is a heavy sentence. One you, Subaru-dono, could not possibly ever let yourself be tarnished with."
Hesitating. Almost like a scared child, Wilhelm raised a hand.
And let it rest on Subaru's shoulder.
Indeed. This little gesture, meager and faint. Just like the weathered soul that willed it. Meant much.
It meant much.
"Therefore. Please grant me this grace. To know Subaru-dono 'unworthy' to be called unworthy."
Subaru's mouth was close to remain paralyzed open. His eyes widened. Overall, his expression was exuding this sense of awe and disbelief he could mistakenly believe it palpable. To have earned such a wish from the one you respect the most… This was no easy feat.
And nothing to be belittled.
It took a handful of seconds for Subaru to gather his wits before trying to organize his maelstrom of thoughts.
"A-hah… I?" A light sheen of sweat nearly formed upon his brow. This instance, Subaru was faced with the figure representing a goal. An ideal self. Wilhelm van Astrea. Once Wilhelm Trias. The man that carved his path and struggled through so much today with nothing but his effort and his determination, lived to say this to Subaru. To say this… To him!
He had to realize.
Subaru was aware. He knew for a long time about the man's regrets. About what certainly weighed on him irrevocably. And what he couldn't deny to be faultless. And still, he admired this man!
Sure, he wasn't perfect! But that lesson he came to assimilate regarding one's character he discovered long ago. And perhaps because of it, he admired this same individual.
With all his faults, misdeeds and sins, he still soldiered on. Until today. Until this same day where he was told this wish.
"-hk… What makes you say this?" And Subaru wanted to know the reason why. Sure, he could perhaps derive the meaning. He could obviously read through the lines. But it wasn't satiating enough… He was gluttonous this way. He purely lived with this want to know, consume and possess all. This answer, was no exception.
"…"
The silhouette he could say to chase deep within the eye of his mind pivoted towards him. Returning to regard him face to face once more, the stoic Wilhelm brought up the fist clenching his flower-scented gloves before his heart. His composed mien exuded confidence. His eyes however reflected a crafty spark, and his mouth surprisingly betrayed an earnest smile.
Subaru at that moment knew. That the old coot would not answer directly.
"-…Hehe…" And that managed to somehow crack him up to involuntarily simper and quietly laugh.
"Because: Really, Subaru-dono is invincible." A secret kept within, a belief built over ruins and an understanding agreed upon in Priestella's ashes of war. To live and serve, in name of a reason. A reason embodied by human virtue to follow. It was enough to keep this decision to himself. He would not budge upon it, and utter nothing sure. Being a knight, meant to act by sworn fealty. He would not stain what little dignity he had not shattered by mentioning what needed not be said.
It was just like in the bunker all over again.
…
The brightly lit azure sky with crescent clouds, in an ephemeral passing, was replaced with a star filled horizon cradling the moon. The very same one gazed upon in Priestella.
Subaru would like to name these words 'impossible to forget', however he wouldn't jinx anything about such a concept any time soon.
Simply hearing them again, would be enough.
"…"
"…"
And simply accepting this silence to pass on undisturbed would may as well mean Subaru wholeheartedly accepted such heartfelt words. And though they certainly stuck to his memories, it would not bring any piece of mind to him should he say nothing more. Even if it were mundane, to change the subject would still help Subaru cope.
Thus, thanking his muses for smiling upon him with an immediate curiosity, Subaru broke the peaceful silence as he physically tried to make himself seem unbothered.
"…By chance, if Wilhelm-san doesn't see this as an annoyance to be asked, could I pursue a curiosity I've just got?" Rubbed Natsuki his ringed hand against his side.
"Please."
"Since I've seen the letter still at Wilhelm-san's person, I wanted to ask if there was anything to be mindful of regarding correspondence recently. If it was enough for a notice to be made in return to Heinkel about a delay on the sender's part, I couldn't help but mull about it."
"Feeling so is not misplaced, indeed." Pocketing the held pair of green-stained gloves, the old Sword Demon retrieved with an empty hand the epistle mentioned. "One should naturally assume that a distance as minimal as that between the Karsten duchy and the Barielle domain would be shortly covered. Unfortunately, it seems certain issues have accumulated enough to affect even unrelated affairs. One such issue is posed by recent activity on part of mabeasts, understandably on the deliverers part."
"Witch-beasts activity… Is it unusual? I am aware roads and settlements are well secured and maintained from being invaded. But hearing an idea that makes you think 'a hoard of mabeasts is making an annual passing' does put it in question. Usually they don't act like so without a reason, I imagine."
Nodding softly in return, the old man lowered his voice before continuing. Not before peeking from the corners of his eyes at the people behind.
"As of now, it remains debatable whether or not this issue arose as repercussion to local noble affairs. Seeing how they have grown restless in passing days, it cannot be put beyond this reasoning." Tucking away the letter, Wilhelm faced the ripe-gold field of wheat that undulated in the breeze, bathed by sunshine. At places, still energetic children continued on with their games.
"Hearing that local nobles are agitated is concerning. Even more if I account for all the happenings since Watergate City." Daring to sneak a glance at the warrior's back, Subaru paced away from the elder tree, approaching the old Astrea. "Perhaps it will sound nosy from me if I start to prattle about the state of affairs of Crusch-sama's domain. And guising my worry under the excuse of being an ally must sound kind of scummy, so… Wilhelm-san-"
Before committing to his insistence, Subaru took a second to cement his line of thinking. Making sure an individual that once helped you and in turn you move with the intent to return the help and succeed, was a thing befitting of allies. Subaru had proven capable to live up to that expectation enough times, enough to not be questioned about his stance on this value. Therefore, one would think he was exempt from needing to seek trouble back in someone else's backyard in order to amend any feelings of debt. But this wasn't out of an official or professional place. Simply put, he merely wanted to express worry. Nothing tied behind the sentiment.
"-I hope to sound as honest as I like to think I am when saying: Please rely on me if there is any hardship you are faced with. We're still allies, right?" Presenting a confident mien while not bothering to lower his voice in turn and make a point of his willingness to speak it loudly, Subaru was content with his suggestion.
"Mhm. I believe I could not have thought any different, should I have even willed so."
"…"
"…"
Only now!
Was Subaru satisfied with the silence.
Conflicting principles weren't brought into question anymore to feel burdensome. Having renewed his clear desire to help should Wilhelm require it, was most definitely the type of condition Natsuki felt at ease with.
…
"!"
Someone set away enough to be more than out of earshot was waving their way.
"Oh! I believe this must mean I too will be involved in your current trouble, Subaru-dono?"
Having spotted from not too far the modest gesture of Carol calling for his attention, Wilhelm thought right to announce the most possible contender for having been called into discussion by his old comrade. Especially after seeing how Felt had her talk with the maid, it wasn't precisely difficult to put things together.
"I swear, if Felt starts going around spreading rumors…" Making a puckered face while disapprovingly staring at the blonde candidate that intentionally averted to meet his gaze, Subaru whined with a false disappointment. "Worse now if I somehow get to be backtalked even to Reinhard's mom, I swear! Maybe Heinkel wasn't exactly talking out of his ass about brats…"
Humming humorously at the black-haired knight's comments, Wilhelm was ready to excuse himself and quickly see what the problem was.
"Ah, Wilhelm-san! If you get any clue as to why Felt's all this pissed about me and Rein, please make sure to tell me!" Shamelessly requested Subaru with a vindictive and smug aura. Believing he'd get back easily at the little sister he saw; Subaru was none the wiser to what the subject could've entailed.
"Now Subaru-dono, resorting so quickly to underhanded tactics is by no means knightly behavior. I must insist for you to revise this approach." Wilhelm fought back with an amused jab.
"Che!" Palming the side of his head, further making a mess of his halfheartedly styled hair, Subaru rubbed his temple and fallen tresses while lamenting with evident fake regret. "Here I thought being a self-proclaimed knight bailed me out of getting lectures on knightly behavior. Tch, if that bastard Julius hears this… He'd even start laughing with his ass all day!"
…
…
…
"Yeah… I don't see it. And I'm not just saying it for the sake of being the buzzkill." Felt deadpanned with her hands folded beneath her chest. "Why ask the old timer if he's on big bro's side from a mile away?" Lazily observing their ease to talk and seemingly deliver meaningful reposts at one another in the context of discussion, Felt was beginning to wonder if she should start associating with people less inclined on the whole sword-dedicated-lifestyle.
With rightful mention, let her see…: so far she observed dumbass-ery, some generous amounts of stubbornness, annoying need for maintain posture and of course a sublime seasoning of more stupidity!
Yup, she would become gray in the head before even reaching the age of eighteen. If she'd make it that far, assuming they wouldn't drive her into an early grave with this type of shit!
"Carol… when I asked if you could think of someone to let in on this for help… I was imagining you recommending someone more… I dunno? Sensible!" Hissing the last word, Felt discretely pointed with her eyes the approaching gentleman.
"I beg your pardon, lady Felt. I admit to not having explained myself correctly, however I decided so in exchange for reaching sooner to the ally we need. And please, rest assured, Wilhelm-sama is by no means insensible. Quite the opposite. I must request for you to seek his council." Speaking from a place of earnest trust, Carol Fauzen placed a palm over her heart much alike to her old method of formal presentation. Saying she fell back on old habits was also a way to reinforce her stance on having taken the right decision.
"I know so. After all, matters as alike to ones confronted in the past by lady Theresia, are a domain to call for wisdom…" Her voice took a wistful quality by sounding weaker upon reminiscence. Carol, oddly enough became more aligned with the image of what one might consider when thinking 'elderly maid'. However, this wasn't to think of as a compliment. It was rather the opposite. Such a melancholic and withered look did not suit the disciplined knightess.
"…I'm hoping your right…" Mumbled the candidate for the crown with an unsure composure.
Tapping her foot repeatedly over the dense green grass bellow, rhythmically hearing the thuds of her steps, Felt instinctively rubbed the parchment she kept tucked behind her in a pocket.
Her writing was a bit on the messy side. Having only in the recent year and months needed to establish something of a calligraphy.
The contents… were perhaps best described as hurried.
Truth be told, writing the prior night amounted more to a challenge than an annoyance she usually saw in the act. Having to dedicate her attention over her shoulder regularly while scribbling away with great disbelief, in case she'd come to be discovered by her own knight for having listened in… left Felt questioning the clarity of her intent.
The only thing she could absolutely assure herself with was the person of address.
Having expressly dedicated the messy letter to Emilia, with copies just in case, she now had to make plans regarding delivery.
Knowing how dumb-and-dumber worked, she was willing to bet Subaru checked in regularly with Reinhard program wise. And that was an important detail, because she couldn't imagine the inane brother to stay any more than he felt comfortable. After he was more or less requested to at least prolong his visit here last night, Felt could already see how Subaru plotted to leave in tow with Wilhelm.
"I'm banking my plan off of big bro's directions by now…" Assuming he'd most likely leave with the Sword Demon, meant that from what she'd caught on from the old guy, Subaru had high chances to reunite with Emilia's faction. She just had to do the convincing part.
And the approach was not quite a cakewalk to decide on.
Because opening now the jar of worms meant creating a scene and she had to admit… dumb-and-dumber were in lady Luck's bosom as of now! All with Louanna's waking and general heavenly mood, Felt was cornered into not ruining it, on either of their behalves. In short, going apeshit to outright yell out Reinhardt basically accepted blood money for Louanna's payment of wellbeing and accuse Subaru of a gruesome intervention was off the table.
Even if she wanted very, very, much to name things for what she saw them as.
That only left her with the long road. And subsequently, the harder one.
It meant she had to work in increments and dawn the musty detective attitude on those two ricky-retardos if she were to make any changes. A fucking drag!
Why couldn't she just be allowed to go straight for the issue?!
"Right… responsibility and maturity bullshit…" Acting out the adult was less fulfilling than she'd expected. "And they even dare joke of me acting childish!"
"I am very proud of you, Felt-sama." Carol merely smiled at her accumulating laments.
"And I hate the -sama ass-kissing, but we should already be over that point, huh."
…
"Felt-sama, Carol-san. At your call, what may be the pleasure?" With smooth and simple words, Wilhelm announced himself.
"…k…" Having inhaled deeply and clenching her fists to prop against her hips, Felt dawned a serious visage. "Mister Wilhelm…" Od, she even had to at least maintain some smidgeon of 'courtesy'! 'Seriously, these two assholes will have to answer for so much!' Thinking so Felt continued. "I require you express assistance to deliver in my name a letter to big si- Emilia-sama. It's of great import."
'Fuuuuuuck…! Import, Import?! Who da fuq even thinks 'import' sounds good for high-nose talk?!'
Cringing internally, enough to externalize a passing shiver and scrunch of the eyes, Felt extended the carefully tucked away parchments.
Nodding respectfully, not failing to present his willingness for this small request, Wilhelm asked nothing. Merely, he extended his arm in an act to receive the epistle.
Having heard the name of the woman Subaru's heart burned for, and gathering from recent interactions a certain sense of urgency, was enough of a reason to follow through with this mission.
With surprising gentleness grasping the letter, Wilhelm made move to collect them. Yet Felt did not relent her hold.
"But more importantly." She piped in while trying to not let the distant image of Subaru catch on too much. Not when he still maintained an eye on them. "Make sure these letters reach Emilia-sama and Emilia only. As in…"
"As in peer at nothing and mention nothing from them. It indeed goes without saying." Wilhelm nodded with closed eyes.
"Yeah… It's… I'm sure it'll help. I really need big sis for this." Not bothering anymore with the formalities, Felt muttered so.
"With your intention, lady Felt, I'm convinced it will. Whatever the problem may be."
"Heh… ya actually are kinda good at readin' the mood, huh? Guess you're not all harsh and calloused." Lightly joking, the girl easily let a smile form over her troubled likeness.
"Hmhm… I should hope so." Chuckled Wilhelm without seeming bothered by the cruder appreciation. "Proving otherwise would be disgraceful."
Once more, today seemed packed full with rarities!
Wilhelm revealed to others a smile once more.
An important mention: Originally, I intended to add to this chapter the scene describing Louanna's awakening, considering I wanted it to be this more touching moment. The scene still exists, that I haven't scratched it away. But inserting it here as a mere recollection just wouldn't have fit well. Therefore, I'll most likely publish it separately from the upcoming chapter as its own little scene.
If there is any point detected throughout the story that could be enhanced or done better for later improvement, please go ahead and mention whatever caught your eye. It's generally fun to talk about at large.
