As it turned out, I couldn't sleep in my soul room. I guess my soul room time is sleep. All I could do is lean back on my bed, bored as hell. It's not that I don't have things, I had spent way too much money on manga and anime that were still stored in my room. It's just that well, when you're pulled from your home out of no where and stuck in a room for hours on end, it's lonely. When it was my choice to sit in my room and mess around on my phone for hours on end, of course I'd be all for it. But when the choice is taken away, all I can do is want to leave.
"Is this what Atem has to deal with? I thought he got to dream at least occasionally. Ugh."
So I spent the next few hours cleaning up my room, rereading my yugioh volumes, and lastly trying to open duel links on my phone. Hilariously I could actually open the app, and even edit my deck, but I couldn't play anyone. The manga was more of a time killer since I was stuck in a filler arc but I didn't see any harm. It wasn't till a few seconds later that I realized how dumb of a move that was.
Knock, knock
"Hey Sierra? You in there?" I heard from outside my door. It was Joey. I scrambled to put away all of the yugioh books i had under my bed. Before rushing to the door.
"Hey there... uh, dude." I started, out of breath, "What's up?" Joey gave me an annoyed look before stepping inside.
"Eh. Just bored. Thought I'd take a look at my new roommate. Maybe go over some strategies too." I raised an eyebrow.
"Strategies?" I asked. Joey nodded and grabbed his duel monsters deck.
"Yeah! I figured you'd have some good advice and we could beef up my deck for when we face those orichalcos dudes." I looked at Joey like he was an idiot.
"Joey," I started, "I told you before I don't play duel monsters." Joey looked dumbfounded.
"Oh... you're not like the pharaoh where ya get it immediately?" He asked. I sighed.
"Joey the pharaoh has no memories of who he was. He just shared Yugi's memories. That's how he knew. Besides, I don't have magical powers. At least, none that I know of." Joey dropped to the floor in defeat.
"Besides taking over my body whenever you want." He retorted. I shrugged.
"Not really I can't take it over right now." I answered with a huff. Joey raised an eyebrow.
"How do ya know?"
"Well… to be honest I'm not sure. But I wouldn't want to take over your body while you're sleeping." I answered. Joey grinned and shot up to his feet. He then grabbed my hand and turned to the door.
"Let's wake up then." He exclaimed. And the two of us booked it out of the room. The next thing I knew I was hovering over Joey again an Joey was waking up. I looked around and the others appeared to be awake, with Tristan avoiding Joey's arms and Yugi staring out the plane window.
"Ugh my back. Oh hey Sierra. You sleep?" Joey asked as he stretched his arms. I shook my head.
"It turns out ghosts don't get to sleep." I answered. "Must suck for the Pharaoh." Joey first frowned, but then it changed to a grin and pointed at me in victory.
"Ah ha! So you admit it!" He yelled. I raise an eyebrow.
"Admit what?"
"That you're a ghost!" I my face turned red and I noticed the rest of the team reacting from a distance.
"You know I really wish we could hear the other half of these conversations." Tristian stated.
"I know. It's annoying." Teia started before tapping Joey's shoulder. "Hey Joey. The pharaoh and Yugi don't need to talk out loud. Can you do that with Sierra?"
"Not that we know of." I started. "And even then, Yugi just looks like he's zoned out whenever that's happening." I answered, knowing she couldn't hear. Joey laughed though.
"Dat's so true!"
"Why do I even bother?" Teia muttered to herself.
The next five or six hours of my day can be best described as road trips without modern amenities. Pegasus' goons were attempting to drive us to the destination. The main crew watched as Yugi's Eye of Timaeus card glowed as another duel was going. My guess being Kaiba's with the dude in the crop top. I wasn't really paying attention though. For you see before I left that room of mine, I had my headphones in my pocket and was totally jamming to music from my phone. I basically just laid down on the floor with my legs crossed and my hands behind my back.
It wasn't until I realized that the limo we were all stuck in had stopped and that everyone was clearly bored out of their minds that I took my headphones out.
"So how long have we been stopped?" I asked Joey. He glared at me.
"Oh so NOW ya chime in." He sassed. I rolled my eyes."
"Excuse me this is a road trip. What else do you expect me to do?"
"I don't know." He responded. "Chat, maybe say something when a trading card starts magically glowing."
"Ugh. Joey, I'm an adult spirit forced to follow around a bunch of teenagers doing a cross country road trip to "save the world," from some supervillain who is stealing people's souls with a trading card game will end the world." I paused, trying to let what I just said sink in. "At this point very few things surprise me. That said aren't you guys getting hot? We're in the middle of a desert. Where did the driver go?"
Joey blinked a few times, snapping back into focus once the last sentence hit.
"Well we could go look for him." He started. "Hey guys, lets spit up and look for clues."
And so the four teens plus two ghosts got out and searched the clearly abandoned gas station. Though I still can't see Atem if he's even with Yugi right now. Perhaps the dude is chilling in the puzzle.
"Do ya hear that?" Joey asked everyone.
"Nah you're crazy." Tristan answered. "All I hear is my stomach growling."
"Hold on." Yugi said. "Joey's right! Listen." The rumbling continued and I realized what was about to happen.
"Bikers."
"Bikers?" Joey asked. "Last I checked bikes don't rumble." I slapped my forehead.
"I meant motorcycle bikers you idiot!" I yelled. Joey's eyes widened.
"What is it Joey?" Teia asked.
"Sierra thinks it's motorcycle bikers." The others gasped.
The group ran out of the gas station and into the street. Surely enough the bikers stopped right in front of them. All in black leather no less.
"Black leather, in the desert?" I asked trying to lighten the mood. Unfortunately since Joey was the only one who could hear me, it didn't work.
"You kids shouldn't be roaming around these parts." One of the bikers said.
"You guys got a problem?!" Joey asked as he pushed Teia back.
"Gas station's closed." Tristan added. "So you should just move on."
Out of the corner of my eye I saw Yugi get taller very quickly.
"I don't think they're taking your advice." The Pharaoh added. I vaguely remembered what was about to happen so I just chilled carefree above all of this while the drama happened.
"I guess the spikey haired kid is the smart one." One of the bikers said.
"This would be the part where you run." I finally said to Joey. Joey looked at me more annoyed at before, but upon hearing the engines fire up, decided to listen.
"Hey guys," he started, "I've just got a great idea. RUN!" And so the main character crew ran. However they were quickly cutoff and circled by the bikers. I also realized the At Joey looked more and more pissed off at me not being worried.
"Gha! If she doesn't care then could she at least let me know why?!" He yelled. But his mouth didn't move. It was like, no, it was. I could hear his thoughts!
"Joey! I heard that!" I yelled with excitement. Joey was still angry but also scared cuz a biker was coming straight for him with a metal pipe. Immediately I switched with him so that he wouldn't feel the paint, but nothing hit Joey. I opened his eyes and saw a Yugioh card was literally imbedded in the biker's arm. And to further escalate this insanity, I saw a very familiar looking blond ride over on her motorcycle and take on the rest of the gang with even more cards.
I feel like an moron for letting myself take this seriously.
"This freaking show…" I whispered before looking up at Joey's spirit. He was in shock. I think he had a hunch too but wasn't sure. One of the biker guys was passed out near us and I grabbed one the card. It was a harpie lady. Before I could look at it closer, the girl rode right next to us and plucked it out of Joey's hand.
"I'll take that. Thanks hon." She looked back at us and finally Joey recognized her.
"MAI!" He yelled. But she couldn't hear him of course. He immediately swapped back with me, only to almost get hit by another guy wiping out. The dude's motorcycle crashed into the gas pump.
"Nyeh!" Joey yelled before running back to the limo.
"Get over here!" Teia yelled.
Thankfully Tristan knew how to drive… somehow. This show actually makes more sense if you think they're American. And we got out of there as the gas station exploded.
Here's to hoping the driver is okay.
"So wait. Who just saved us?" Teia asked.
"It was Mai." Joey answered smugly. "I saw her."
"You serious?" Tristan asked.
"Unfortunately." I thought.
"Hey what's wrong with her coming to our rescue?" Joey asked. I paled. He can hear my thoughts too? Well he's impatiently waiting so he probably can't hear this.
"Nothing!" I deflected. "It's just… well isn't it weird that she's here at the same time as all of you? She's a professional duelist why was she in the desert?" Joey switched from angry to contemplative. Before he could think about it too hard, Tristan pulled over. I would've asked why, but as the car stopped I noticed all the steam coming out from under the hood.
"So the car overheated, sue me!" Tristan yelled as everyone began hitchhiking with their luggage. It actually didn't take them long to wave down a guy with a truck. Tho he was clearly upset he didn't get to ride with Teia. After we got settled she was the one who broke the ice.
"Joey, you said it was Mai, but how did you know?" She asked.
"It was her card. One of her Harpies." He answered before he added smugly, "and I got a look at her through her helmet. I knew we'd see her again. Still…"
"Still what?" Teia asked. Joey shook his head.
"It's just something Sierra said. It's weird that she was there the second we needed her help."
"Yeah. You got a point there." Tristan added.
"I wonder why she didn't stick around either." The Pharaoh also added. I realized this was going to hang over everyone until the big reveal, that she was with the bad guys now. Which sucks but maybe it'll make it hurt less if they're expecting it. Though knowing Joey that's unlikely.
That trucker dude was super considerate since he drove us right to Pegasus' headquarters in San Fransisco. Of course it was a ghost town. Not for long though. First we were locked in, so not a good move, then, from above. I saw her first. Mai on her motorcycle. As soon as the rest of the main character gang saw her she drove off said balcony and somehow landed perfectly.
"How did I ever take this seriously?" I said aloud.
"You're just jealous." Joey thought back. Dude's smart. He's getting better at the whole not talking out loud to me thing. He turned back to the lady of the hour as she dramatically stepped off her motorcycle and took off her helmet.
"Mai!" Teia yelled.
"It is you!" Tristan added.
"Hate to say I told you so, but I did." Joey said smugly. "As for you, what brings you to San Fransisco Mai? The trollies?" Okay so he's not going to be ready for this. That sucks. Mai humphed before reaching for her deck. "What's with the silent treatment Mai?"
"I'm not Mai." She answered. "At least not the Mai you knew." She grabbed a card and revealed it to all of us. It was an orichalcos card, but with Pegasus inside.
"Uh… did you do that to him?" Teia asked.
"You better start talking!" Joey yelled.
"Or else what?" A new voice came. I looked up and our rouges gallery was above. Or well, half of them. Rafael and Valon. "What's the matter Wheeler? Did your little reunion not go as well as you expected it to? And you! Why are you hoarding them all for yourself Mai? Why not show some manners and save some for us?"
"Mind your own business lackey. These geeks are mine so deal with it." Mai fired back. I rolled my eyes.
"Wow Mai the preschool bully called and wants his insults back." I joked. Of course only Joey heard me, and unfortunately he was too in shock to head.
"But… we're your friends Mai." He said softly. Tristan however, was way more pissed.
"Mai totally sold us out!" He yelled.
"It's time you explain yourself." The Pharaoh commanded.
"I was never part of your little play group." Mai answered. "And now I'm going to break you apart one by one." She activated her duel disk and pointed at Joey. "And Wheeler, I'm starting with you!"
"Fine!" Joey yelled striking what I can only assume to be a "I'm ready to duel," pose.
"It's payback time and it all starts now!" Mai drew her first card.
"It's the seal of orichalcos." I deadpanned. Joey looked at me nervously.
"You don't really think so do you?" He asked, now fully communicating with thoughts. I pointed to Mai.
"And to think, I was once pathetic enough to call you my friend." She started, "but nowI know the truth! You were holding me back from achieving true power! So say hello to my real friend, the seal of orichalcos!"
"Yay first turn." I deadpanned as the girls spell took effect. What was weird is it was like some sort of wind blue directly in everyone faces and forced Teia, Tristan, and Yugi/the pharaoh out of the field. Leaving just us.
"Come on Mai! Someone's gonna get hurt!" Joey pleaded.
"That's the idea. Mai answered. "Whoever loses the duel loses their soul."
"If I had a nickel for every time-"
"WOULD YA STOP?!" Joey actually verbally yelled. I felt myself get pinned against the field spell as Joey redirected all of his attention at me. "I get it, this is crazy and ya don't know her but I do! I lost her once… and I don't want to lose her again! So stop pretending this is funny! If you're not gonna help then just be quite!"
"Joey…" I whispered.
I'm an idiot. Just because I know this all works out and so can see how stupid it is doesn't mean he does or even wants to treat it that way. This is his world, his fight. I have to be supportive. I can't make fun of it.
"Joey I'm sorry. I don't know what I was thinking. Please, let me help you." Joey glared before he smiled.
"Well if you feel that way, mind taking over?" Before I could even say no, Joey grabbed my ghostly hand and just like that, I had control.
"Joey this isn't funny!" I yelled.
"Sure it is." He answered, now hovering on my left. "We can be like Yug and the pharaoh. You take over when I duel and get all the work done while I kick back and relax."
"That's not how it worked you jerk!" I yelled at the ghostly teen. He was still laughing like an idiot when I begrudgingly drew four cards.
"Hey wait a minute. D'ose aren't my cards!"
"Don't change the sub-" But he's right. They aren't his cards. "No Joey." I say with an evil grin as I look his ghost form in the eye. "They're mine."
Somehow Joey's deck got switched for my Duel Links deck.
"What?! I thought you said you didn't play duel monsters!" Joey exclaims directly into my ear.
"Cut it out dude I'm right here!" I yelled. "And I play online! It's different rules there!" I looked down and saw my hand.
I started out with Emerald Bird, Crimson Fox and White Rabbit for monsters. While the lunalight reincarnation dance is my only trap card. A near perfect set to start with.
In other words, I'm about to kick Mai's butt.
"I'm getting impatient Joey. Are you done talking to yourself? If so then make your move. The seal is already in play. If you forfeit it'll make things go by a lot faster. So turn around, be a man, and duel!" Mai yelled. I laughed and whipped around.
"Alright then Mai. Though I will continue to tell you that I am not Joey, I believe my actions will speak louder than my words. It's time to duel! I draw!"
The card is Lunalight Fusion.
"Joey?" I started. The kid was leaning over my shoulder looking at the strange new card in my hand. "I am going to win this turn." His eyes snap to mine, and I wink at him before turning my attention to Mai.
"Well Mai, I'm afraid you're going to lose the duel and your soul this very turn."
I heard gasps from the peanut gallery and some intrigued looks from the two Doma boys.
"Is she serious?" I heard Tristan ask.
"Do you think she can really beat Mai already Yugi?" Teia Asks. However it's the pharaoh that's in control.
"We will just have to wait and see Teia." He answered sternly.
"Don't joke with me Joey. My harpie has 1900 attack points. I'm through with you geeks jerking me around." She attempts to come back. I laughed again.
"It's no joke Mai Valentine. Just be sure to say hi to the Great Leviathan when you make it to him." I laughed again. Oh man this is reminding me of all the times I utterly destroyed people on duel links once I figured out how overpowered these lunalight cards are. Before the the game nerfed them anyway.
"Of course, my deck wasn't as successful against more complicated decks, but shhhh."
"Not as complicated?" Joey asked. I nodded.
"Mine was simple so I could draw the right cards efficiently." I answered him before continuing. "I play, Lunalight Fusion!"
The barrage of "what?" And, "I've never heard of that card," almost made me giggle again. Instead I turned to the main protagonists.
"Watch and learn everyone what happens when you place just one monster on your side of the field in attack mode thinking your life points are safe because of some stupid field spell. Now,"
I dramatically take two cards from my hand.
"I fuse Lunalight Crimson Fox, and Lunalight Emerald Bird, in order to fusion Summon Lunalight Cat Dancer!" I must say, the hologram for my precious winged beast ace looked amazing. Though what was more amazing was Mai's expression going from pure shock to an uneasy grin as she tried to hide her fear.
"Two... two thousand four hundred attack?!" Mai exclaimed. I nod, my smile only growing.
"WOAH! How'd ya get that?!" Joey asked me. I turned to him and winked.
"180 virtual booster packs my friend." I answered. God those random chances really screwed me over. "Oh but I'm not done yet. I'm just getting warmed up! Now, I activate my Crimson Fox's special ability, whenever it is sent directly to the graveyard because of a card effect, I can select any one of my opponent's monsters and reduce its attack points to zero. And since you only have one monster on the field, I choose to your Harpie Lady!"
Now the villains gasped. I could tell Valon was visibly worried, meanwhile Raphael seemed almost happy as even though none of them knew what my cards could do. Out of all of them, I think Rafael knew I'd won.
"Zero?! You can't do that!" Mai stammered. "Well, even then, my life points will still be above water so next turn you're mine!" I wave my left index finger, the hand holding my remaining cards.
"I'm not attacking yet Mai." I answered. The gasp that choked out her mouth, UGH it's just amazing when you know you've trounced someone.
"I activate my Lunalight Emerald Bird's special ability. When it's sent directly to the graveyard, I am able to summon one monster from my graveyard to the field in defense mode. And I choose, Lunalight Crimson Fox!"
"Just what kind of a deck is this?" I heard Tristan ask. I've completely dumbfounded all of them, and I was too focused on the duel to listen or answer.
"And finally, I activate my Cat Dancer's special ability. Sacrificing my Crimson Fox, causing it to be removed from play."
"Why would she go through the trouble of reviving it, just to banish it for good?" Teia asked. Yami turned to her, gritting his teeth.
"I believe it is part of her strategy."
I turned to look at the Pharaoh.
"Absolutely correct, your highness." I answered. He was clearly angry but personally I think he was mad I was winning. I turned around and dramatically point at Mai's Harpie. "Because now my cat dancer is able to attack all monsters on my opponent's side of the field, TWICE!"
The air stilled. Mai collapsed to her knees.
"No... way..." she whispers. At this point I'm laughing maniacally.
"WAIT SIERRA STOP!" Joey yelled in my ear. "She's gonna get hurt!"
I ignored him.
She isn't going to get hurt. Valon will jump down 20 feet and only break his arm that way the rouges gallery stays in one piece.
"You sealed your fate when you played that card Mai. My only regret is giving that monster another soul. You should've listened to your friends."
"I don't need friends." She spit. I sighed.
"Yes you do. If you knew how to rely on them you wouldn't be in this mess. Now you'll get sealed away like all of the other poor souls you and your biker dorks collected." I look at my Cat Dancer. "Now Lunalight Cat Dancer, attack her Harpie! But first, my cat dancer's other effect! It deals 100 in effect damage for each attack!"
Mai's life points are more than halved, dropping down to 1500.
"How, how could you do all this?" Her voice is shaking. I merely shrugged.
"Wouldn't you like to know. Now attack again! Wipe out her remaining life points!"
Time seemed to slow down. I eyed the Doma dudes chilling from the top.
Why haven't they made their move?!
Then I see it.
Raphael held Valon back from jumping down.
"NO!" Joey is yelling as my ghostly form was thrown forward, falling flat on my face despite being well, a ghost.
Mai's life points hit zero.
Joey runs to her as the circle shrank around her. He cradled Mai in his arms. I didn't know what to do. The rest of the team soon followed, surrounding them. I looked up at the Doma dudes and they were clearly fighting. Valon looked like he was ready to tackle Raphael while Alister holds Valon back. Alister and Raphael were engaged in what can be best described as a glaring contest.
"UGH! RAPHAEL!" I yelled at them despite knowing they can't hear me. "Why'd you have to hold him back?!"
"Why..." A whisper creeps in. I look back over at the team of heroes. Joey had passed Mai off to Tristan's arms and was walking towards me. To the others, it might've looked like Joey towering over nothing, but they all knew I was there.
"Why did you do this?! I TOLD YOU I NEEDED TO SAVE HER!" He tried to pick me up by my shirt but I floated out of his reach.
"Joey..." I trailed off. There was no excuse I could make. "I didn't think..."
"THINK WHAT?! That your attack would work?! You know whoever lost that duel would lose their soul!" That last bit set me off.
"Well did you want me to lose MINE then?! You weren't the one dueling Joey! I was! I would've lost my soul if I let her win!"
Joey paused, I could see the tears falling down his face as he fell to his knees. I wanted to comfort him, but I couldn't even touch him.
"I couldn't save her… not again…"
"ENOUGH OF THIS!" A new voice boomed. I knew whose it was. Yami strolled past everyone, and stood over Joey and I meanacingly. The Golden eye glowing brightly on yugi's forehead as his eyes pierced my soul.
"So you could see me this whole time?" I asked defeatedly. The pharaoh nodded held the millennium puzzle before me.
"Now, dark soul, you are banished to the millennium puzzle, never to torment my friends again!"
When I opened my eyes, I found myself in a cell. The bricks were probably made of clay since they were brown, and in the front of me blocking the door was the ever imposing Pharaoh.
"You will never harm my friends again." He growled before he slammed the door. The only light came through the slits in the cell door's window. And even as I curled up into a ball to feel sorry for myself, I made it all 30 seconds before the door opened, only it wasn't the pharaoh.
"Well, it appears the poor unfortunate soul here, is you." The teen taunted. I only glared.
"Hello Bakura."
Long time no see! Finally willed myself to pump this chapter out. Hope it wasn't too rushed. I've had the duel planned for a while it was just getting here that I was having writers block for. Chapter 3 uh… whenever I feel like it. Sorry! That's just how my brain works. Anyway hope you enjoy.
