Nano hummed as he knelt on the rooftop across from a modest diamond jewelry store, the orange sky overhead reflecting in it's spotless windows. Looking into the shops, he found interest in the abundance of floor space inside, the cost for such a large store would be far outside of the profits made by a business that was only 'locally' owned. Such a fact led him to one conclusion: his intuition was correct and this was the headquarters of the up and coming Oro Family. While the mafia itself was new and its ambition was well-known enough to hinder all of their attempts at inter-criminal relations, they were not the reason for his presence. They had in their 'protection' his real target: Violette Reine, a hyper lethal assassin following in her father's footsteps, who's name is commonly whispered among the Vale underworld for her mass murders of gangs who opposed her will. It's common knowledge that she was dangerous to deal with, but she wasn't on his elimination list and her wealth of connections among the seedy underbelly of Vale would surely prove valuable to Nano and his brothers. But a prize like her would assuredly be heavily guarded, Nano pondered, and he needed to deal with the situation carefully, as even the slightest misstep could signal the entirety of Remnant that The Brothers were in Vale and, eventually lead to the location of their hideout.
Nano shouldered his signature weapon: a Lee Enfield Rifle Mk III. As he looked through the iron sights, he saw a man turn over the 'We're open!' sign to 'Sorry! We're closed!' an hour before their 'official' closing time was, a sign to those in the know that the less-than-legal business was about to commence. Nano narrowed his eyes as he descended to street level and slowly crept around to the back of the store, staying cloaked the entire time. As he approached the rear of the building, he stopped at the corner and peeked around it looking for signs of security, spying a lone security camera affixed to the wall closest to him and a pair of teenagers exploring each other's mouths to the wall farthest from him. Not wanting to alert the lovebirds, he quickly sent a few of his insects to disable the camera, as he pondered how to get the teens out his way. That dilemma seemed to solve itself as the two quickly ran into a nearby alley to pursue activities unknown. Looking for anything of notice, he tilted his head up to the large air conditioning unit protruding unattractively out of the otherwise beautiful red brick building, a shoddy job clearly done by some underhanded contractor. A seemingly meaningless failure of architecture that impacted nothing other than the eyes of onlookers, except to Nano, who found an interest in the AC unit's vent cover affixed to the back of it, seeing his unguarded point of entry. Nano casually approached the vent, still scanning the environment for threats, until he came upon his objective, ready to perform his well- practiced "magic trick", as the authorities would call it. Nano deconstructed his right hand into a swarm, of which then proceeded to diligently fly to the metal screws and proceeded to unscrew them with unified coordination. The vent cover plummeted to the ground, the imminent crash into the ground only interrupted by the tails of the infiltrator's trench coat rushing force under it, softening the fall to the point that the vent hit the ground with a soft 'ting.' The faunus flashed a quick grin to himself over his work, before resigning to a light chuckle as he completely deconstructed himself, regrouping with the rest of his swarm at the opening before he flew deeper into the vent.
The swarm silently darted through a maze of vents, going up and down pathways before coming upon his prey. In the lobby below him sat a single guard, his eyes cloudy and inattentive, which only meant one thing to Nano: an easy kill. Inaudibly, the swarm crawled out of the vent above the guard. The guard was so lost in his thoughts that he did not even notice the shadow figure that was forming right behind him. Even when the two red eyes of the shadow figure narrowed at the guard, said guard was completely oblivious until two hands seized the man's neck. But now it was too late as before the man could cry out, Nano hands twisted the man's neck at an unnatural angle until there was audible dry snap.
As Nano slowly traced his eyes over the man's face, his features became an exact copy of the guard's. With his new face, Nano picked up the corpse and placed it back on the chair, taking care to place him in a position that would look like he was asleep to any onlookers that took a cursory glance into the store. Taking a quick moment to tidy his newly created tie, the infiltrator then focused his attention on a door located in the back marked "Storage", knowing it was the most likely place to lead to the 'secret' basement. He was expecting for the entrance to be well hidden on the floor, requiring a search that required his inquisitive eyes. To his surprise upon lockpicking the door open, he was beholden to see the staircase down unhidden, the false floor meant to conceal it laying deliberately against a wall.
"How inept are these guys?" Nano thought to himself as proceeded towards his objective.
After he descended the last step, Nano found himself in a basement straight out of a horror movie, flickering lights and all. Noticing the quiet sound of a device's haptic feedback, he poked his head around the corner to his left, noticing another guard sitting inattentive on a metal chair, playing with his Scroll. Seemingly sensing a gaze upon him, he turned his head around to notice the false face of Nano.
"Maroon? What are you doing down here? Aren't you supposed to be on guard up top?" the man asked as he stood into an authoritative stance .
"I'm taking a break," the newly christened 'Maroon' responded.
"What do you mean you're taking a br- '' Before the man could continue, the imposter formed a blade in his hand and stabbed the unfortunate victim through the bottom of his jaw, the tip of the blade poking through the back of his skull. Retracting his blade, Nano took grasp of his kill before gravity could take its effect and studied the lifeless face as once more; his figure was to be used to Nano's will. Now done with the body, the disguised faunus turned to the janitor's closet behind him, effortlessly carrying his load to the locked door and used his tried and true method to unlock it. Once Nano's right hand's swarm opened the locking mechanism, the criminal wasted no time in stuffing the body in said closet before locking the door. Moving on, he eventually came across a cooled room with several large box coolers. Noticing the trail of red liquid dripping from the side of one, Nano investigated closer, running his finger through the small puddle on the floor, his anger brewing when he recognized it as blood.
"Silver, So you decided to finally get off your ass? Finally stopped texting that whore?", approached yet another guard, his voice filled with a sense of arrogance. Nano quickly hid any implication of emotion from his face, turning to face the hubristic speaker, his right leg's ever so slight limp not escaping Nano's notice.
"I got bored," Nano shrugged.
"Well, it is about time to relieve Maroon from guard duty anyhow," his words aroused suspicion inside Nano as no indication from two prior victims signaled a shift change.
"What do you mean?" 'Silver' inquired with a cocked eye.
"The boss told me to take care of these damn coolers, but there is no way I am doing it alone."
"Seems like you just want to slack off and let someone else do all the work."
"What do you mean? All I am doing is asking for some help."
"Yet instead of asking anyone else not on guard duty, you ask Maroon? I don't know man, seems like you got something else going on," the imposter accused, being sure to throw in a twang of arrogance.
The gangster huffed at Nano's words before he reached inside his pocket. Nano tensed and readied to defend himself until he saw the criminal bring out some lien.
"How about I give you some dough and you keep quiet?" Asked the gangster.
'Silver' produced a slight humming as he seemed to consider the offer for a moment, then wordlessly took the money and quickly pocketed it.
"Thanks, now go get Maroon," The gangster demanded.
Before Nano could 'comply' with his wish, the arrogant gangster kicked one of the coolers with a particular amount of malice.
The gangster chuckled when he saw 'Silver' raise an eyebrow at his actions, "That was the bitch that gave me my limp,"
"Oh?"
"Yea, she really fought like a bat out hell," The gangster gave an infuriating smile as he continued, "Maybe if she hadn't refused my advances, she and her family wouldn't have to die for her father being a fucking snitch."
Nano's anger erupted to the point that without even process and comprehension of his anger, his body willed himself towards his sadistic target. Faster than the murderer could react, Nano closed the distance and shattered the monster's injured kneecap with forceful stomp, shattering it into a multitude of fragment. And before he let out even a whimper of pain, Nano grabbed the gangster's voice box. Nano's form returned to his own, his expression filled with a tranquil fury.
He brought his lips to the terrified gangster's ear and whispered, "I am going to kill every last bastard here...die knowing everything you have strived for in life was for nothing,"
The gangster tried to scream, to make some type, any type, noise to call for help. But his efforts were useless as Nano tightened his grip to the point that the tips of his fingers started to sink in the doomed man's flesh, drawing blood. The excruciating pain the man was in ended when Nano effortlessly tore the man's throat out; with the criminal's dying breath being nothing more than a pathetic gurgle. Nano delighted in the look of anger and regret in the dying man's eyes before the light faded from them forever. As the body collapsed, the gangster's murder caught it and then diligently concealed the filth in one of the coolers.
"What the hell was that noise?" Came a voice down the hall before another male gangster walked in, "Why the fuck is there blood everywhere!?"
In one fluid motion, Nano turned to the new voice with the face of the man of he just murdered, an imitation of his smug smile plastered on his face.
"One of these stupid fucking coolers fucking cracked like the stupid piece of shits they are, " Nano reinforced his 'mood' by kicking the cooler that held the body of the man he just murdered.
"Gods, that sucks man,"
Nano huffed with false exhaustion, "I'm gonna need help with this. I'm not breaking my back to dispose of these things just for them to break and cover me in guts before I can get rid of them,"
"Why not get Silver to help you?"
"I would, but I can't find the bastard anywhere,"
"Where the fuck could he be?"
Nano shrugged, "I don't know, probably banging some whore,"
"The boss won't be happy," The new gangster chuckled.
Nano shrugged again, "His fault for sneaking off to have sex like he's some teenager,"
Both criminals laughed at the joke before the conversation continued,
"Alright let us get some of the boys in the back," Nano followed the man with a sadistic smirk on his face.
Inside a large bare office room, it's walls covered in murder-concealing plastic, was a 29 year-old Violette Reine, her ponytailed dark brown hair and white combat fatigues stained with the blood of one of her deceased capturers. Currently, she was tied to a dark oak chair as portly as the incompetent, beer-bellied mafia boss who stood in front of her.
"You know, you have caused us a hell of a lot of trouble lately, girly" said the mafia boss Oro, twirling his engraved knife.
"I gave you rules to follow if you fuckers wanted to be active on my turf. You declined: I responded on how I felt about that." she snarled as she glared at Oro with her shimmering violet eyes.
"By killing my men and leaving our territory vulnerable to other gangs?"
"I made the consequences very clear to you. At least those gangs play by my rules,"
Oro's face scrunched in fury at her audacity.
"What about The Xiong Family, Luna's gang, or even Roman's gang!? Why am I the only one you're going after?"
"Who said I wouldn't let them run unchecked?" Violette chuckled, "Besides they are not on my turf: Yet."
The don took a deep breath to calm himself before he did something rash, "You know... You are an awful chipper bitch for someone about to die."
Before Violette could respond, there came a knock on the door. Oro let out a knowing smirk at Violette before he said ,"Come in."
The door opened to reveal a gangster with a platter that held a glass and bottle of whiskey. The gangster quietly parted the plastic covering over the entryway and without acknowledgement of Violette walked into the room and sat his silver platter on the tall plastic stool close to Oro. His job done, the gangster turned around and took up his post on the wall behind Oro.
"So is this point where get another one of your lackys to torture and kill me while you enjoy that drink of yours?" Violette asked sarcastically.
Oro took a sip of his drink before he talked, "No... you see. Your little 'escapades' have caused a lot of my capos to start to lose faith in me. I need to prove I am not weak and I can get my hands dirty," Oro sported a sadistic grin as he approached her with a raised knife, "So the one to kill you will be-"
"ME," Oro didn't even have time to register his speech's interruption before his brains were blown out by a decloaked Nano who fired what appeared to be an M1911 straight into Oro's temple point blank.
"Sorry if I gave you a fright, that opportunity to say that was too good to pass up," Nano said as he chuckled darkly to himself while he fired a few 'make sure that he's dead' rounds into the plum formerly living mob boss before deconstructing the sidearm.
Violette's heart pounded in her chest, her attempts to breathe calmly failed as she panicked and tried in vain to back up in her chair, Oro's blood on the floor making her boots unable to catch traction on the floor's slick plastic.
"Why is Nano here!?" Violette's mind raced, "I thought he was rumored to be Mistral? Did he come to kill me? Why? It was my father that was the one that made dealings with them, I was just there!"
As her mind filled with assorted panic, it came to a head when Nano started to approach her. Her flight-or-flight response took effect, and she threw herself backwards in her chair. In one fluid motion, Violette sliced open her rope bindings with the knife hidden in the sleeve of her fatigues as flipped backwards into a combat stance, and fished a wind Dust crystal from her pants pocket into her left hand. The vigilante knew she only had one chance for survival, so she revealed her semblance, draining every ounce of energy out of the crystal and, with a glowing hand and all the strength she could muster, with poured it all her strike, Violette driving her fist so hard into her target's chest that her fist actually penetrated through the back of him. And before Vice-Versa could make another motion, she released some of the pent up energy in her hand; Nano was quite literally blown apart by the attack as his body shattered and fell apart as he flew back and hit the wall behind him. Without reprieve, Violette continued her assault with a fire Dust Crystal for her other hand, draining it and then proceeding to unleash a maelstrom of fire at Nano. Her torrent of fire blinded her to Nano's figure, but she made sure not to relent until she really felt the toll of exhaustion of her semblance on her aura and ceased her attack. She approached his body, thinking that perhaps she had actually succeeded in what many others had failed to and finally killed him. But such a hopeful thought did not last long.
"That was pretty good... not bad at all... but, if you aim to kill me you will have to do better than that," came a distorted voice from where Nano's swarm had been, the words seemingly forced out with injured effort. Violette took a hesitant step back in shock as she wondered how Nano could have possibly survived that attack. Her question was briefly answered when she noticed that as Nano reconstructed himself behind her; his left wing, though it would be more accurate to call it the remains of a left wing, was partially incinerated and the swarm was making little effort to repair it.
"You- your aura didn't even try to protect you.." Violette choked out, "it didn't even try to tank my attack... you're low on energy aren't you?"
Nano let out a soft chuckle, "So what if I am? You think you have a chance to beat me since I'm in a weakened state?" Nano rose to his full height: his eyes glowing crimson and the wind howling, "I would have died long ago if I could not handle such a small handicap."
Violette steeled her face as she projected her arm towards him and shot out her flames once more. Her determined face did not convey her knots of panic inside her; She remembered more than a decade ago when her father would occasionally spar against one or more of the brothers and she knew she had yet to reach that level of prowess. Her fears were confirmed when she saw Nano use his other wing to block her inferno and advance, and once he was close enough, he jumped over the attack. She noticed his evasion, and tried to turn around to defend herself, but it was too late: his right hand latched onto her wrist and started to drain Violette's aura, feeling an overpowering weakness that forced her to her knees.
Having her aura drained was one of the worst feelings she ever experienced. It felt as if her very soul, her very being, was being mercilessly stripped away from her and she was absolutely powerless to stop it. For an infinitesimal of a second, she felt Nano's soul touch her's as his aura roared back to life.
She felt Nano's power, his very will, and she knew this battle was lost. So raptured was she, that she was only brought out of her stupor when her aura broke. Barely able to catch her breath, Nano punched her hard in the stomach with such a force that she actually threw up and flew until her back hit the door. Dazed and exhausted of options capable of harming Nano, Violette knew that this was her only opportunity to escape; as she stumbled onto her feet, she made it look like she was going to foolishly continue to attack Nano, bringing her knife up into a fighting stance and inched her way closer to the door behind her before she suddenly ripped it open to flee.
Or at least, she would have if an elderly man in a leather jacket and jeans with violet eyes that were the same as hers did not appear on the other side of the door..
"F-Father?" Violette whispered in disbelief. But it was too late, as she uttered that title, her 'father' broke apart into a black swarm that came towards her and knocked her onto her back. Before she could even attempt to push the swarm holding her down, Nano straddled himself on top of her, reintegrating itself into him, which restored his wings and made him gain enough mass and enough weight that Violette was now trapped underneath Nano and at his mercy.
Violette closed her eyes and waited for the end...
Only for her to feel a pair of lips gently kiss hers. Violette's eyes fluttered open and saw Nano with his neck wrap off staring at her. Violette tried to speak but all that came out was a stutter. Fortunately, Nano seemed to understand what she was trying to say.
"Sorry..." Nano started hesitantly, "There was no other way I could confess in a way that you would know was genuine."
Violette was stunned; she was aflame with questions and wanted to ask Nano all of them but all she could manage was one word, "W-when?"
Nano, thankfully still seemed to understand what Violette was trying to say.
"I have always admired you. Even at a young age, you had this fire in you. You were determined to help people, and even when your father died you refused to compromise on your morals and let your demons take over, or at least it was admiration. However, I knew that I felt love when I saw you in here, faking that you were trapped; ready for Oro to take one step too close. You are so similar yet so different to that young woman I first met long ago,"
Violette was silent; the shock had worn off but she still had no words. Nano then got off of her and backed away from the woman hiding in the shadows of the door frame with only his glowing red eyes being visible. Violette shuddered as she gazed at his eyes, they reminded her too much of the eyes of Grimm.
Nano then spoke once more, "Do not worry, you do not have to reciprocate my feelings or even give me an answer. Although, I do have a feeling this won't be the last time we meet. So... See you soon,"
With that his red eyes faded into shadows as well as any other sign of presence leaving Violette alone with her thoughts...and a lot of dead bodies.
The docks were quiet as Nano approached his home ; it had been a slow week for the docks. Which made it easy for the criminal to avoid detection, the only things that would be looking at him would be the seagulls poaching for free bread. As Nano walked through his house, he realized how quiet the warehouse was and realized that his brothers had gone into hibernation in order to conserve the small amount of energy they had left. Nano grew solemn as realized soon he would be all alone as he hunted for energy to feed his brothers; something that by this point was routine but still no less lonely. As he walked further in the warehouse, he heard a voice talking in the 'throne' room. Nano was slightly curious about its origin, and upon a closer listen, was comforted when he recognized the voice was Virus. Once the faunus entered said room, Nano was treated to the sight of Virus sitting upon what looked like a stereotypical throne. A screen was being projected from the right arm rest; said screen showed a man of Atlesian descent who was currently talking to Virus. The bird faunus in question was in his full armour with the flames on wings flickering in and out of his feathers.
"I already told you," Virus said; his electronic voice had a slight hint of annoyance, "Our branch in Atlas was wiped out. we had to find another source and get the resources and transportation from Mistral, it will take a little longer for it to get to you, but you will still get what you asked for and more."
The man nodded, "And I told you, it is chaos here, if I am to take control of this shitshow, I will need those supplies as soon as possible... before the others have a chance to regroup,"
Virus sighed in resignation, "I understand, I'll see what I can do, but, I can't make any promises,"
The man nodded before he signed off; the moment the screen turned off, Virus huffed, his head resting on his arm in exhaustion. Nano did not envy his brother's burden; as he had been dealing with logistic problems for the past few days and the way things had been, it didn't seem like they'd wait up any time soon..
"Good, you are back, now we..." Virus's voice trailed off as he straightened himself up, his golden visor focused on his youngest brother, "You did not go through with it, did you?" Virus then rose from his throne, sensing Nano's damage and quickly closed the distance to inspect his brother more closely.
"It was never required for me to," Nano said as he stood as still as he could as Virus delicately inspected his brother's wings, "Only that I made sure she wasn't a threat to us,"
"Oh? Normally when somebody makes you lose so much biomass, they usually have quite the draft in their head, like the late Mr.Yūhi " Virus said as he cupped Nano's cheeks in his hands, staring into his brother's eyes.
"It is not that bad," Nano said as he pulled away, "I will have the biomass back in a few days,"
Virus's wings fluttered, "Do you love her?"
Nano was taken aback by his question, but betrayed nothing, though his silence was enough to answer instead.
"Did she at least give you an answer?"
"I left before I got one."
Virus let out a short 'hm' at his brother's answer, sensing no deception.
"Why?"
"What?" Nano asked, confused.
"Why now of all times? Why her?"
"I honestly could not answer the first question; I myself do not know 'why now'. And you know the answer to 'why her.'"
The eldest wings fluttered once more, "Fair enough," Virus finally said, "I hope you made the right call."
"I do not regret my actions regardless of what their outcomes will be," Nano said with finality in his voice
Virus hummed a rhythmic yet unnamed tune, "I expected nothing less. Regardless, I think it is time for me to hibernate; I have delayed it for long enough and I should do it before someone notices me."
"You aren't going to wait for Luna? She should be here soon..."
"I am tired and need to hibernate before someone looking for us senses my Aura," Virus said, fatigue evident in his voice, "Besides she will wake me when she arrives. I'd rather be at least somewhat rested for what she no doubt has in mind...But do tell her that I am in the guest bedroom," Nano rolled his eyes but nodded regardless.
"Oh by the way, you have a heist with the White Fang in three days," Virus said as looked over shoulder, "It is a Schnee train robbery outside of Vale; So expect heavy resistance from both humans and Grimm. Also, Don't be surprised if you end up having to pick up some of the 'slack' for the White Fang."
"Do you have that little faith in them?"
"They're a terrorist organization filled with people who are angry and ready to lash out at any perceived slight, all the while they think they are improving the world. The fact that most of their members could not tell an actual military strategy, even if it was used against them repeatedly, does not improve my confidence in them," Virus said before he resumed his walk to the guest bedroom.
Nano nodded as he watched as his brother walked away, leaving Nano in charge of everything for the foreseeable future. This alone did not stress Nano out, they had done this countless times; no, it was the timing that worried Nano. Virus's leadership was needed now, the Vital Festival and the incident at Atlas was no doubt making the authorities antsy and on hair triggers. But Virus was right, basically every source of authority was waiting for them to stumble, make one more mistake so they could finally put a permanent end to Nano and his brothers.
They were beyond foolish if they thought Nano would make such a stupid blunder.
Nano had to wait till sundown until anything of note happened. Before then, Nano made sure to check on his brothers to make sure they were safe and their slumber was peaceful. After that Nano began to attend to his duties as de facto leader. Thankfully, Virus had done the 'heavy lifting' for now and all Nano had was to do some checks and follow ups to make sure everything was running smoothly. It wasn't of course, but there wasn't much Nano could physically do to fix them except advise and hope it sorted itself out. After dealing with the beyond frustrating hell called 'logistics', Nano relaxed by taking inventory, replenishing his ammo reserves, and began plotting for a hunt.
It was as he drew up plans for a hunt, the News on in the background, when one his scouts heard a sequence of knocks before the front door unlocked. The door opened to reveal a slightly- tired 30- something woman. She had white hair and pink eyes, wearing a white and black jacket with a armor chest piece underneath along with arm braces and baggy pants with armored boots. The bunny ears on top of her head revealed her heritage as a faunus.
Nano continued to plan for his hunt as the woman approached the dining room he was in.
"Hello Luna," Nano said when the woman entered through the door, not gazing up from his plans.
"Nano," Luna began, "Where is Virus and everyone else?"
"You just missed them. They have already gone into hibernation."
Luna sighed, "Fucking fantastic."
"Oh, do you not have faith in my leadership?" Nano teased with a slight smile.
Luna rolled her eyes as she sat on top of Nano's table, "We have a serious problem and I would have liked all four of you to help."
That made Nano stop looking at his plans and towards her, "What problem?"
"I went to the mountains to check some of my supply lines that were turning up numbers that didn't match up. Low and behold, I discover that some of my men are smuggling drugs into Vale behind my back. Thing is, the only other piece of information I was able to wrangle out of the one fuckstick I was able to capture alive is that they also plan to kill me."
"Fuck," Nano cursed, "The timing could not be worse."
"I realize."
"Do you still have the person in your custody?"
"Ate a cyanide pill after the fucker declared, 'My boss will impale you on the pike for all the kids to see!'"
Nano chuckled darkly, "Graphic."
Luna chuckled too, "Very much so."
"And in front of kids too."
"How evil," Luna said sarcastically.
"Well," Nano said, "Do you at least have an idea on who it could be?"
"Yes actually, I have a pretty good idea but nothing concrete," Nano made a gesture for Luna to continue, "His name is Grün Ephialtes, he has always been brash, arrogant, and insubordinate. Him pulling something like this was only matter of time,"
"Then he will not know of my deception until my blade sinks into his and his supporters back," Nano declared.
"As expected, Deceiver," Nano's eyes glowed at the mention of his title.
"Unfortunately, I can not make a move until a few days, I need to hunt for energy at the very least for me before I can do anything significant, will you be fine until then?"
Luna chuckled, "I am staying here with Virus and you guys for the foreseeable future, what do you think?"
"Your gang and body guards don't have a problem with you staying at an unknown location and, as far they know, completely alone?"
"They will have to suck it up because you guys are the only ones I can trust to not be attempting a coup on me," Nano laughed as well Luna. Luna then sighed, "I think I'm gonna head to guest bedroom and turn in,"
"Oh that reminds me, Virus is in guest bedroom,"
"Then I guess I'll get some exercise before I sleep then," Luna said with a knowing smile, her mood visibly brightened.
Nano couldn't help but roll his eyes when Luna practically skipped to the guest bedroom. Hopefully, whatever she would do would be quiet enough to not occupy his mind from the planning ahead.
