I'll keep this short, I'm really happy that this story is picking steam. That being said, I do have plans for a lot of world building of the special region which means new species, lands, magic's and etc. I will also try to give Lelouch a new mortal enemy but that won't happen for a while.

grievousrommel: You're a genius. I don't know how the hell I didn't think if it myself but thanks for the suggestion. Hell, he might even see some bits of himself in her and grant her power so that she can save her people and get her revenge. Before you ask, I already have a geass power in mind for her.

JCarrasco: Oh I will, thanks by the way.

Last Primaris: Technically, chronomancy would fall under the branch of D&D magic known as Transmutation. But no, when he does to reveal his past to those he trusts, he'll tell them the full story, no lies, no half-truths. He has nothing to loss by telling them as if they have earned his trust, he'll want to reward for that.

Vein Bloodborne: Yes, that's why I made it a 10 year time period before the gate opens, so that he has time to learn and adapt to this new world as I already said he'll travel a lot for the first few years. And he'll have a harem(eventually) but I won't reveal to who will be in it at this time.

OBSERVER01: Yes I did, it was the first gate/CG crossover I read actually. His powers(at least partially) will work like alchemy from FMA Brotherhood.

Dontus -not Donut- Powerus: Oh yes, and with the amount of bodies you can lay squarely at his feet, he'll have a 'scent' she'll pick up from kilometres away but for now, don't worry about that, they won't be in the same area for a while as we see that Rory travels a lot, she tends to not stay in one place long unless there's something or someone there that interests her. So to hold off their meeting, they'll simply miss one another(by literal kms) for a while.

Strife666: Thanks, I'll do my best to keep the quality up to standard.

itsFAX: Already explained this.

KisaragiKei: Reading your review that was the highlight of my day as I knew that you gave permission for people to use your set up, but I was worried that mine wasn't as good as the original, thanks for putting those worries to bed.

Snake551g: As much as I agree with you, that was the whole point of the requiem. His big plan was to make everyone forget how shitty they were to each other and focus on how shitty he was being to them, he even tells Suzaku this when he says he plans to spill so much blood, that Euphemia's massacre would be relatively small and forgettable in comparison. I wouldn't put it past them for the cast to blame him for every bad thing that happened, even before he took on the mantle of Zero.

Imperial Gilgamesh: Oh I know, but I changed up her age so she would have a larger role in things.

ewertondragon10: He and Rory will actually get along just fine as she's not the first super hard to kill female who looks far….far younger then she actually is he's met. Though I won't reveal too much on how they will act with one another.

Ghostly: That's gonna be mostly omakes so the parts of the story where his universe comes through the gate won't be cannon to the story. Besides, what would be the odds of them being in Ginza when it's attacked?

The Rupture: I will.

Halcyon: The changing names was him saying that he's moving on. He's still the same person, hence why he kept his first name but he's not letting his past define him anymore, hence why he changed his last names. The reasons for those names in particular were already chosen.

x-x-TheBurnedMan-x-x: Already explained this.

Chapter 3: The world we live in

(Two days after last chapter – In town)

"Master Cato says he'll be finish with his business by the end of the day." Lelei said as she walked out of the inn that they were staying in for the next few days. Inside was their master, waiting for whoever he wished to speak with. He had given her some money and said that they could do whatever they wished, so long as they stayed out of trouble.

"Which means we have to find something to do to entertain ourselves for the rest of the day. We could always see what we can buy off the merchants." Lelouch said as he looked around at the townsfolk as they went about their day. It may have been 6 months since he first came to this world but he was still getting used to being in a world that hadn't even gone through the renaissance yet. In fact, going by how buildings looked and people carried out their daily task, he would say that they weren't even in the high medieval period yet.

"We are running low on supplies. That will be best." Lelei nodded her head as the older boy turned around the led the way down the street towards the market area.

"I hope you aren't going off to gamble again." Lelei added in as she looked at her travelling companion out of the corner of her eye, spotting his smirk before he answered.

"It's not a gamble if there is no change of defeat." Lelouch countered with as his usual arrogance but he could see that she wasn't amused so he threw her a bone and stood down. "Oh relax, I'm messing with you. I won't off to gamble."

"Thank you. It's a bad habit." Lelei scolded him like a child, which was made all the more amusing going by the fact he was the taller and older of the two.

"We all have our vices. Our master is a prev, I'm lazy and what about you?" Lelouch asked her as he had noted pretty early on that Cato was a perverted man. Sure he left Lelei alone but that was partly because she had only begun puberty. From his own experience, he knew that a girl could change a lot in that time frame so he was sure that once she started to develop, their master would crack some jokes at her expense.

"I don't have one." Lelei said as she reached into the money pouch she was given to count their funds. Seeing a total of around 2 Sinku and 15 Denari.

"That I know of, but I won't dig any deeper. You want to share, that's great. You want to keep it to yourself? It's fine." Lelouch dismissed, seeing no point in seeking out her secrets when he didn't like to share himself. After that, the two of them went silent for a while as they kept on moving, taking in the sights and smells. That last one coming from the bakery they passed along the way. Lelouch made a small mental note to visit there and see what they had.

"Lelouch?" Lelei spoke up out of the blue when he wasn't looking. They had just reached the market place, the centre of town and were now looking at which stall or store at start at.

"Hmm?" He sounded to let her know he was paying attention as he looked about, trying to find the merchant with the smallest line of costumers.

"Why did you take the last names you did? I don't recognise them to any of the Gods I know of, are they related to the Gods of your world?" Lelei asked him, having never gotten the reason as to why he chose those names out of all of them. He had already told Cato and her that he wasn't of their world, which was how he learned of the Gate which was rumoured to appear. They were quickly able to shoot down that theory as if he did came through the gate, then it still be open as all the tales speak of how it would remain present and open for weeks if not months at a time. He didn't tell them the full story, not being comfortable with that but he did reveal that his world was very different to this one, particularly being that humans were the only sentient race where he came from.

"Smart girl. The answer is a yes and a no." Lelouch replied as he looked over with a small smirk at the fact she figured out the trend he copied.

"Yes and no?" Lelei asked him, confused by his reply.

"Yes because I did take them from deities of my old home but no because I'm pretty sure they never existed in the first place." Lelouch told her as after all this time, after thinking about that mysterious Goddess whose name he never learned, he could conclude that she was most likely the only real 'deity' of his world. "I was only following the trend of how people are named here." He said as they approached the stall and stood in line for service.

"I see. But them, who were these Gods then?" Lelei, always eager for new information, asked him. Finding her honest curiosity to be a sort of breath of fresh air to the world he once lived in, he answered her question, choosing to be honest.

"My middle name is Ja as you know, but that's short for Janus, who was the roman God of: Beginnings, gates, transitions, time, duality, doorways, passages and endings. I know that's a lot." Lelouch told her as he knew quite a bit of mythology of the different nations and cultures from his world, having come across many mentions of such in his research into geass.

"Do you believe in his ideals?" Lelei asked or more accurately, stated as she didn't think he would take the name of a God or god like figure if he didn't share some connection or values with them.

"Yes, I believe in the future, in change and that in the end, all things must came to an end. Before creation, there must first be destruction, yin and yang as it were." Lelouch answered as he had long since accepted that he was far more equipped for destruction then creation. He would admit, it did bother him at first but he got over it with time, reasoning that one could not have one without the other and in the end, he was able to destroy the corrupt and filth infested old world to make way for the possibility of a better one.

If they somehow messed that up, then it's on them. He honestly couldn't be bothered to care about his world and what happened to it. It's not like the people he cared for there are weak or foolish, they don't need him babying them.

"Yin and Yang?" Lelei stopped at that, it took a second for him to realise his error.

"Oh, apologies, I forget that terms of phrases aren't universal. Basically, you cannot have one without it's polar opposite. A fine example would be you can't have life, with death and vice versa." Lelouch explained, having really studies that little bit of philosophy back when he was younger.

"Interesting, I never knew of such an ideal." Lelei nodded her head as she worked it over in her mind, seeing that it did make some sense like with feeling hot or cold.

"I'll be happy to tell you more about them later but onward to the last point, my last name." Lelouch started as they moved forward in the line. "Nemesis, as it's spelt and pronounced is the name of the Greek Goddess of Retribution, in the text on her that I know of, she mostly punished those guilty of arrogance before the gods but she did punish those for transgression against others like murdering one's family." He explained, having found particular interest in her back in the day, so much so that he nearly called his alter ego 'Nemesis' instead of 'Zero'.

"You were an avenger?" Lelei caught as she looked him in the eye and saw it, the lack of a glint, that lack of a light.

He had killed before. In response to her words, all Lelouch did was sigh and give her a small smile but one that was filled with regret, pain and exhaustion to it.

"I was. I spent almost a decade of my life fighting for the chance to avenge someone, to get justice for a crime against my family." Lelouch said, purposely leaving out a great many details, not in the mood to think about all the blood and pain right now.

"What happened?" Lelei asked him, but rather than curious as before, she seemed more concerned for him. It warmed his heart to see that she was concerned about him, made him think that Nunnally and Euphemia would have loved to meet her.

"I found that in the end, it was pointless. As for why, for now, let's just say that I found out some truths that were hidden from me." Lelouch said as the look of pain, regret and exhaustion in his eyes was washed away by one of barely contained rage and fury. It honestly scared Lelei as she hadn't even seen the guy angry yet, irritated when he had to do manual work? Sure but never angry.

'Those eyes, who does he hate so much that his rage would shine like this.' Lelei asked to herself but didn't voice, seeing that it was a sensitive enough topic. 'I know that he said that his old life was grim and bloody but what actually happened to him? Why does he have the eyes of a military veteran twice his age?' "I'm sorry." She said aloud, saying the only thing she could.

"It's not your fault. What happened is in the past. All I can do is move forward." Lelouch responded as he looked towards the sky and the clouds, his expression back to the default of passive.

"Master Cato says that one should show their support for others in pain by saying such." Lelei told him as their master had been convinced she needed classes in expressing herself and emotions.

"Yeah, I never understood it either. Why apologise for something you didn't do?" Lelouch could understand that as he never did like such things. Tears and pleas will never change anything, they won't end wars, bring back the dead or make what's wrong right. Only strength and action will.

"I suppose it's because you want that person to feel better, having someone apologise for your pain can help at times." Lelei said as could recall the times when she her sister apologised to her when they were younger when she was hurt. Or maybe it was the warm hugs and kind, soft words?

"I'm a man who has come to put more weight into actions then words. If you wish to help, then do something. Anyone can say sorry," Lelouch said as he recalled a certain brown haired prick who couldn't work up the spine to own his actions and move on. "But not everyone can do something to show their sorry." He finished as they neared the table but at the same time, they picked up some trouble down the way, near the town square.

"What's this commotion all about?" Lelei asked as she saw people moving towards the square.

"I don't know, should we check it out?" Lelouch asked her, to which she nodded so the two of them went over to see for themselves. As they approached, they found that there was a large crowd, so hoping that someone would know what the noise was all about, Lelouch asked someone who appeared to have been there for a while.

"Excuse me, what's seems to be the issue?" He asked the man, a tanner going by his wardrobe.

"You don't know?" He asked the boy, looking him over and most likely making the connection that he wasn't from around here.

"We do not, we have only recently gotten to town." Lelei spoke up, not being able to see over the taller and larger adult in front of her.

"Travellers? Oh well makes sense, your accent as think as a tree." The man said as he then realised that Lelouch did speak with a thick accent. Though he couldn't place it.

"What's the issue?" Lelouch asked again, not really all that interested in his accent. He could speak, read and write the common language. That was enough.

"Oh well, the guards caught some guys trying to kill the local knight in his own home. They say they used to work for him." The tanner said as he gestured to the front where Lelouch could see the five prisoners, slaves from what he could tell, being hulled up the stairs onto the execution stage. None of them looked like they had been treated nicely in their time with the authorities, something that grated on his nerves.

"Really, they tried that?" Lelouch asked, keeping his expression and tone clear and collected. When the man nodded, he then sighed as if he found this to be a pain. "Man, did they have a death wish or something?" Now he knew something was up. Slaves in this world were just that, slaves. They were property and had no rights whatsoever, their owners could do whatever they wanted to them, whenever they wanted and from what he had observed in his time here, there were no kind masters. Hell they were even branded like cattle and though they would give plenty slaves to try and off their master, there was two main flaws to that.

The first being as since they were branded, there was no way a slave could ran away after even attempting harm on their master and their families as someone would notice their visible branding mark on their foreheads, which played into the second reason. The fact that it was illegal for a slave to leave their master's lands or properties. As soon as someone even suspected they were a slave and outside their master's property, they were done as that alone would warrant a public lashing if the guards are especially cruel. Afterwards, they would contact your master, so if he or she happened to have been murdered, you were screwed.

All this meant that the odds of one slave, never-mind a group like this one all trying to kill their master was low….very low.

"Well if they did, they're about to get it. The local guard is putting them to death." The tanner said as the crowd moved around a bit enough for Lelei to see the stage as well.

"Death?" She asked them, flinching as she had never seen someone die before. She had seen dead bodies but this….this was new to her. To comfort the girl, Lelouch laid a hand on her shoulder in a sign of support.

"Well, it was the most likely outcome. That or banishment." The tanner said as they all saw the five being fastened to large wooden tables which seemed like some form of crude operating table. Once they were fastened down, against their will of course, one of the guards stepped forward while another picked up a large hammer. "Oh man, looks like they're going for the rumpcort."

"What's a rumpcort?" Lelouch asked, having never heard such a term before.

"You'll see." The tanner said just as the solider who stepped forward begun to speck.

"Slaves! For your crimes against the lord of these lands, you shall all be put to death!" The solider, who was dressed differently than the rest as they had a cape, announced to the crowd, who in turn cheered for their deaths.

"We didn't attack our master!" One of the beaten slaves yelled out.

"We swear it, we are innocent!" Another yelled as well, looking worse than the first as they had missing teeth and bloody fingers, hinting they were pulled off. But before anything more could happen, both were harshly slapped across the face.

"Silence! You're pleas are useless now, now you shall face justice for your crimes!" The commander of the group proclaimed as they found their mouths stuffed with cloth to keep them silent as they tried to plea one last time while another started to strain against the roped holding him down as he cried.

'Just what the hell are they going to do to them?' Lelouch thought to himself as he watched as the commander stepped back and nodded towards the big guy with the hammer. All while the crowd seemed to be cheering for this. They found this entertaining? It made him sick.

'Why are they cheering? They're about to put those men to death, that isn't something to be happy about.' Lelei on the other hand, had his moral view of the situation but not his experience, leaving her confused as to why someone never mind a large group like this could cheer for the deaths of others. Were those slaves that bad?

"Lelei," She looked over to her friend(she liked to think they were friend) as he looked at her with a serious look to him. "Close your eyes."

"But-!" She tried to refute but he shot her down.

"Do it." He didn't yell but it felt like he did as his gaze bore into her before he lesson it to. "Please, you don't want to see this."

"Okay." She agreed to it as she closed her eyes and covered them with one hand for extra measure. Seeing that she followed, Lelouch turned his attention back towards the stage, missing how Lelei kept on eye open to view through her hands.

'There's no axe, no sword. Only a large man and a big hammer. With how they're all strapped down, I can already guess which type of execution they're using.' Lelouch thought to himself as he took in what little visual evidence there was and came to the conclusion that they were about to have their limbs broken. He was proven wrong when they chose a equally harsh, but unexpected method whereas the hammer user stepped to the side of the first person, rose his hammer high and brought down right on their chests. The force of which was easily enough to crush his ribs as the victims immediately started to convulse as their lungs and heart were pierced by their ribs.

'They're…they're caving in their chest? Is this supposed to last, those men are still alive, they're suffering slow agonising deaths!' He concluded as his eyes widened at the sheer cruel barbaric nature of such an action as he could tell that the blow alone wouldn't kill them, not instantly, they could suffer for about a minute or two before death finally took them. he never thought he would see such a thin as sure Britannia used public executions but they were always quick, firing squad or lethal injection, this….this was something even his old enemy would never do.

"H-How….could they…?" He heard that last person he wanted to right now whisper out, as if they couldn't believe what there were seeing. He quickly turned over to the side and saw Lelei, with both hands on her face but her eyes opened. Her staff had fallen to the ground, forgotten.

'Shit, I should have known!' Lelouch kicked himself, too used to having a blind younger sister who he could hide things from easily enough. Now that was coming back to bite him in the ass as he quickly picked up her fallen staff as he pulled her along with him as he moved away. "Lelei, we're going, now." He ordered her as she didn't even respond, her mind still stuck on that sight that she didn't even realise they were moving away.

(Later)

'Well, there goes our fun afternoon. What can I do now? She's far too young for such things.' Lelouch thought to himself as he and Lelei sat outside the bakery he noticed earlier. It was a far cry to what he knew but it was still a pretty good place. He had been able to drag Lelei here before she could have some kind of negative reaction to what they had seen. It didn't even seem like she was really there as she hadn't responded to anything he had said, not even when he tried to hand her back her staff. The thing just fell out of her slack hands. They hadn't ordered anything as he figured she wouldn't be a a hungry mood and he didn't want to eat while she didn't.

"Lelouch?" After what felt like hours, Lelei spoke up, instantly getting his attention.

"Yes?" Lelouch softly asked her, noting that her voice was far from her usual. She sounded timid….small. 'That's the first she spoken since we left there.'

"How do you do it?" She asked him, not looking him in the eye.

"Do what?" Lelouch asked her, having a feeling he knew where this conversation was going.

"Look at such things, how did you grow so strong?" Lelei asked him as she looked into his amethyst eyes with her tearing aqua ones.

"I doubt its strength, Lelei. I told you, I've seen death and destruction many times. No, it's not strength, not at all." Lelouch answered her, having felt what she was going through what felt like a lifetime ago. Now, now he was just about numb to the pain of those he didn't personally know.

"Then what is it?" Lelei asked him, wanting this feeling to go away.

"Accepting that life is cruel and for some, it means the end of the line." Lelouch told her honestly if not a bit brutally. He could have been softer with her but he knew that sometimes the best medicine is the bitterest pill to swallow.

"When did you accept it, when did you accept it?" Lelei asked him, slightly calming down as she focused her attention on the conversation.

"When I was far, far too young. It does get easier with time but I hope that you never have to adapt to such." Lelouch told her. She was much older than he was when he saw his firs body, witness his first murder but that was beside the point. Such things were never meant for the young. After that, he was able to get her to eat something before they went back on their shopping trip, only now they had this depressing air to their moods so they didn't really talk all that much. They simply exchange the necessary replies and responses to the other's questions as they went from stall to stall getting everything they came for.

"I think that's about everything." Lelei said as she did a mental count of everything they had acquired and found they had only one thing left on the list.

"Yes, all we need to do is visit the blacksmiths. We're running low on supplies for maintaining the wagon." Lelouch said as they even needed a new hammer after their last one broke.

"Lelouch, when we get back on the road. Could you teach me your language?" Lelei asked him as they walked towards the closest blacksmith they knew of.

"English?" Lelouch asked to get a clearer answer as she knew he spoke multiple and all of them could count as his native one if you consider his old world his home.

"Yes, I wish to learn your mother tongue. You went through the trouble of learning mine after all." Lelei replied, giving him a small but notable smile even if she was only trying to get her mind off things.

"That was more so I could move around villages and towns without looking like the town fool." Lelouch responded to her with a coy tone, seeing where she was going with this and opting to play along. When he saw her not pout, she keeps insisting she doesn't, he gave in. "Oh all right, I suppose I have nothing to lose teaching you. But it'll have to be in our spare time, I still have my own studies to focus on."

"Agreed." Lelei agreed to his terms, happy that she would soon be learning another language and now having something to think about that wasn't horrifying.

(With the Blacksmith)

"How much?" Lelouch asked as he couldn't believe what he was just told. The two of them had gotten to the blacksmiths and after ordering the nails they'll need with the added price of having their daggers, as even Lelei carried one, mended, they had just been told how much that will all cost.

"I said, that'll all cost around 14 Denari." The Blacksmith, a rather tall and imposing man repeated himself as he cleaned off his hands with a cloth.

"We heard you the first time, we're just surprised you can charge that much and still have business. We paid a fourth of that for what we're asking for in the last town." Lelei said as that was a very high price, easily triple the norm.

"Well the last town didn't have an iron problem so tough luck." The blacksmith replied, showing that whatever they were dealing with was a real pain.

"Iron problem? But isn't this town near an iron ore mine?" Lelouch asked as he had made sure to study the maps and routes they had. They both knew that this settlement was a mining one so good of iron should have been cheaper here of all places.

"We are but we're had some…..shortages as of late." The blacksmith told the two of them.

"Could you explain? You must admit that we deserve to know why you're all but robbing us." Lelouch said, his accent ever present in his speech. The blacksmith thought about it for a couple seconds before deciding that it wasn't some secret so he talked.

"Alright. A couple weeks back, some orcs attacked the place. Not a lot of people got out. The miners tried to retake the place but those ugly bastard forced them back." The blacksmith revealed to the two of them, catching their attention though orcs were known to be rather violent and dim-witted. Most were used by the army and the rest kept to dense forests.

"And the local guards have done what about this?" Lelei asked as it seemed odd that this problem was allowed to go on for as long as it has.

"They sent a small squad in about three days ago. We haven't heard from them since. A this point, I wouldn't be surprise if they're dead." The smith said with a shrug of the shoulders. Sure he was hoping that things improved, the local authorities must have some sort of plan in the works.

"Surely the must have done something other than that." Lelouch asked as that just seemed slow. He may have had a rather low opinion of the empire but surely they performed their duties faster and more efficiently than this.

"Not that I know of. Maybe they have some sort of plan in the works." The smith responded as it wasn't like the local guards told them about these kinds of things.

"But they don't tell you all. You're up against orcs, they aren't known for their intelligence. In fact, doesn't the empire make use of them in the army?" Lelouch asked as he found it strange that they said it was orcs, why not request their own to head over and take them out? Orc were always aggressive to outsider orcs so it wasn't like this group will somehow recruit more.

"They do but not the local guard. They aren't that good for defence I hear." The blacksmith said as he looked out the window at some marching soldiers. They didn't have that many here but the ones that were stationed here loved to show off.

"What if someone cleared the mines, would you be willing to lower the prices then?" Lelouch proposed as he found this could be a plan that killed three birds with one stone. He gets to test himself in active combat, they pay a lower price for the blacksmiths goods and service and he helps a town out. Though he was the only one present who saw it like that.

"You saying you're do it?" The blacksmith was clearly sceptical of him, not that he blamed him, he was never much the typical warrior to begin with. When he nodded his head, the man looked like he was shocked and amused. "Yeah right, I don't think that's funny."

"Who said I was joking?" Lelouch asked him, keeping his expression calm and serene.

"You're serious right now? What, are you some sort of master fighter from where you come from?" The man asked with a chuckle, it was a amusing thought he was sure. This young man going up against a group of orcs. He'll be ripped to pieces.

"Not really, but I do know a couple spells that will have those orcs out of your hair." Lelouch answered to him, he didn't mind that he didn't believe he couldn't do it. It wouldn't be the first time people didn't believe he could something only for him to prove them wrong.

"You can't be real right now." The blacksmith was no a little concerned, hopeful but most concerned as sure, the boy may be a wizard but he heard only experienced ones could take down that many orcs.

"Lelouch, we didn't came here to fight orcs." Lelei tugged on his sleeve, she didn't appear pleased with this at all. This was worse than gambling money, now he was gambling his life. Did he enjoy the risk?

"I know, but what better way to spend our time here then you help around? Besides, it beats spending that kind of cash on simple maintenance gear." Lelouch said to her in an attempt to calm her nerves before he turned back towards the blacksmith. "Where do I have to make this little arrangement official? It wouldn't do if I did complete this job and I was cheated out of my pay." He asked with a smirk on his face, the one he always had when he found a particular interesting(annoying) noble he could challenge to a game of chess. This was far from a game, he knew that but it didn't mean he couldn't use it as a learning experience.

I'll cut the chapter here for now. Don't worry though, the actual orc fighting thing will happen but that will be next chapter. This chapter was more set up then anything but it did allow me to show off more of the world, in this case, the mind-set of the citizens of the empire. Up until relatively recently, people would folk to public executions to watch the condemned die. Some even brought picnic baskets so they could ate while some poor fool dies. This kinda of thing only become unpopular when those being killed were popular themselves, for health benefits or because it was considered barbaric and they wished to show themselves as better. So for them, who are stuck in this Roman/Byzantine like society, such things would still happened a lot.

It did take a hell of a lot longer then I thought it would take to get a death sentence that the romans could use in a pubic execution that wasn't crucifixion. I had to learn about some creative and downright depraved methods people came up with to kill each other, so I just made one up in the end because even though the methods I learned about made me want to hug my mother and cry, none of them were used by the Romans or invented yet. I didn't go for crucifixion for three reasons, the first being it was normally reserved for slaves who their master, this group didn't. The second reason was that even in ancient Rome, it was viewed poorly and considered a taboo. The third being that it's the most likely one would think of when they think 'death sentence' and 'ancient Rome'….well that and being forced to fight in gladiatorial combat for the amusement of the masses.

The method used the kill the former slaves as you all read is called 'Rumpcort'. 'Rump' comes from the Latin word 'rumpitur' which means 'broken' and 'cort' comes from the Latin word 'cor' which means 'heart'. The execution style is literally named broken heart because they cave in your chest right where you heart is. The why is because it's reserved for those who broke their master or superior(in the military) trust in them, breaking their hearts(figuratively of course) at their betrayal so to make amends for their transgression, their hearts are broken in a literal sense.
