"Colonel Potter, you have an urgent call! Colonel Potter!"
The sound of Radar's voice as it echoed through the 4077 loud speaker was music to Sherman's ears. He'd been so busy as of late that he'd completely forgotten
to welcome Radar back. But he was definitely going to make amends. He put on his jacket and headed for the tent.
"Radar! It's so good to see you!" Sherman exclaimed.
Radar's face lit up in surprise and he gave a salute. Sherman couldn't help but smile.
"At ease, Son. You said that there's a phone call for me?"
"Oh yes sir! Here it is!"
"Who is it?"
"She told me not to tell you."
"A she, huh? Well, that's interesting."
"I hope I didn't give it away!"
Sherman laughed. "No, that's all right. Thank you, Radar."
"I'll leave you two alone."
"Thanks, Son. And welcome back."
"Thank you, sir."
Sherman smiled as Radar saluted him once more and then left. He picked up the phone. "Hello?"
His heart warmed when (as he suspected) he realized that the voice on the other end was that of his lovely wife, Mildred.
"I tried to call you a hundred times after I got your letter… No, I'm not mad at all… On the contrary… I know, dear… Please don't cry… I know it's hard… It's even
more difficult for me… I miss you terribly…You have no idea… Now dear, I completely understand… Yes, I miss you too… No, of course not… You deserve to go to
Florida to see your sister… Give her my love, all right? I promise we'll be together as soon as we can… I know, I wish it were sooner, but it will be worth the
wait… Yes, I'll write you every day, even when I don't have time to do so… I'll make time… And the first one will be a very long letter telling you how much I love
you… And I do love you, more than you'll ever know… I'll call again soon… Give everyone my love... I love you too, Mildred… Goodbye…"
His heart was full when he returned the receiver to its base and he sat in the chair letting the tears run down his cheeks. Men didn't cry; certainly not
Army colonels, but at that moment he didn't care.
"Oh Colonel, there you are. I'm sorry to disturb you, but-."
He looked up to see Margaret, her mouth open in surprise. She went to him at once. "What is it? What's wrong?"
"It's Mildred." He was fully aware of the quivering in his voice.
Margaret gasped and went to embrace him. "Oh Colonel…" When she drew back he saw that she was crying.
"Margaret, what-."
"I'm so sorry.."
"For what? Because of you, my relationship with my wife has never been better!"
"You mean…."
"What did you think I meant?"
Margaret hugged him tightly and began to laugh. "Never mind! Oh, I'm so happy for you!"
"Thank you, Margaret. Now if you'll excuse me, I have a letter to write."
"Of course sir."
"You know… I'm not very good at this sort of thing."
"What sort of thing?"
"Writing love letters."
Margaret smiled. "I see…"
"Any pointers?"
"Just write what's in your heart."
Sherman nodded. "Major Houlihan, If anyone needs me, I'm going to very busy for a while. I have a lot on my mind… and in my heart."
