"The Witch Chase"
Please enjoy and review!
Mayor Corey had gone into a hardware store which made Davey, Shaggy and Scooby carefully walk up to the window, peering inside to see what the man was doing.
It seemed like he was having a pleasant conversation with the owner, both of them smiling and looking comfortable with each other.
The old man behind the counter then handed a box to the mayor which made Davey narrow her eyes.
"This mayor is one busy guy." Shaggy noted as the trio snuck by the window.
"Yeah." Scooby agreed.
The trio were quick to hid behind the side of the building as Mayor Corey stepped out of the store, laughing.
"Okay, Willard, you take it easy now." Corey called to the man.
Checking the streets, the mayor turned the corner where the trio had hidden.
Panicking, the trio acted fast.
Much to Davey's shock, Shaggy and Scooby produced costumes from thin air.
Or maybe they snatched them out of a trash can when Davey wasn't looking.
The costumes were a trench coat with a bowler hat which Shaggy put on while Scooby put a purple sweater and blonde wig on Davey who was stunned by how the cowardly duo had done this.
Dragging Davey over to the bench, Shaggy had her sit down with him and held her close, making sure their faces were hidden so it looked like they were kissing.
Scooby lay under the bench with a leash attached to his collar, making it look like he was their pet and taking a nap.
As the mayor walked by, he smiled at the sight of the "couple".
"Ah, young love!" The mayor sighed as he walked by them.
Davey and Shaggy pulled away and watched as Mayor Corey began to make his way towards a house, making them wonder if it was his home.
Shedding their costumes, the trio followed after Corey as he went up the porch and rang the door bell.
The trio hid in the shrubbery as they watched, noticing that the house was actually an inn when they saw the sign in the lawn.
A woman answered the door and spoke to the mayor as he handed her the package from the hardware store.
"What an earth is he doing?" Davey whispered as she watched the mayor and the woman glance around to make sure no one was around.
"Like, I don't know." Shaggy whispered.
(With Velma, Veemon and Ben…)
After Veemon let the two humans inside the barn, Velma was quick to turn on her flashlight and shine it around to see what was hidden inside.
What they found was a red truck, a cherry picker as Velma called it, and the trio walked over to check it out.
Veemon narrowed his scarlet eyes as he climbed up onto the truck, looking for anything out of the ordinary.
Velma also walked over to the truck and placed her hand on the hood.
"Hmm, it's still warm, guys." Velma announced.
"But who would be driving it this late at night?" Ben asked.
"That's the mystery." Velma smiled.
"Hey, guys, this basket thingie has some leaves and twigs in it." Veemon said.
Stunned by this announcement, Ben and Velma looked over at Veemon who had climbed into the basket and was holding up a twig.
It seemed like Veemon had found a clue.
It was a good thing he and Davey decided to split up.
Ben and Velma were benefiting from it.
(With Fred and Daphne…)
Thorn and Impmon were walking down the path to their home, the Digimon so tired that he didn't notice that they were being followed.
Approaching the wooden gate, Thorn scooped the exhausted Digimon into her arms before she pushed the door open and, instead of going inside the lovely white house, began making her way towards the backyard.
This struck Fred and Daphne as odd.
They quietly followed after Thorn, peering from behind the house as they watched her walk into a cute little shed.
Getting up from behind the bushes, that had red leaves, Fred and Daphne walked over to the shed when they saw a light being turned on.
Sneaking up to the window, the duo stared inside to find Impmon curled up on a red beanbag chair, snoring quite loudly with a smile on his face.
That amused Daphne since it reminded her of Veemon.
As for Thorn, she was standing in front of a wooden table that had containers filled with herbs and candles that she had lit for light.
In front of Thorn was a mortar which she was pouring ingredients into and using a pestle to mix it.
When she added some type of spice to the mixture, a light green smoke began to rise into the air making Fred and Daphne gasp.
"What's she up to?" Fred asked as he and Daphne ducked down in case Thorn heard them.
"If I didn't know better, I'd say she was a witch." Daphne said as they peered up into the shed.
Lifting the mortar up to her face, Thorn inhaled deeply.
(Davey, Shaggy and Scooby…)
Pausing, Mayor Corey turned around, feeling suspicious.
He saw the shadows of three figures ducking behind the hedges, but he shrugged it off as he continued walking down the street.
Shaggy, Scooby and Davey were hiding inside the hedges and lifted them up, carrying their disguise with them as they continued following the man.
Mayor Corey walked up to a large shed that looked similar to a barn and unlocked the doors.
He frowned as he glanced around him, making sure no one was around before he crept inside.
"Like, he won't ditch us that easily, guys." Shaggy whispered.
Dropping their disguise, the trio jumped out of the hedges and raced to the front of the barn.
Davey frowned as she noticed some leaves got tangled into her hair and she was trying to brush them out as Shaggy shushed Scooby.
"Yeah, shh!" Scooby copied Shaggy's motion.
Shaggy pulled the wooden sliding doors open and the trio peered inside.
It was large on the inside and the only sound Davey could hear were bats which must be sleeping high up in the rafters.
And much to their surprise, the mayor had disappeared.
"It's empty." Davey noted.
The trio began to creep inside, noticing a few barrels and boxes laid out around the room, but there was nothing suspicious.
"Like, where do you think he went, guys?" Shaggy asked.
"I don't know." Scooby said.
A creaking noise caught their attention making them look up to the top floor where the green witch was glaring down at them.
"How dare you disturb my resting place!" She screamed.
Shaggy and Scooby screamed in horror and jumped behind Davey who was glaring up at the witch, her eyes glowing gold and lips pulled back to reveal her fangs.
"This town will pay!" The witch declared.
Jumping up, the witch then sailed down towards the friends.
"Send them a bill, but leave us alone!" Shaggy called.
He and Shaggy were trying to run away, but they seemed to be unable to move properly.
They were running in place and their feet dug a large hole that they sunk into.
As the witch sailed down towards them, Davey whipped around and punched her in the face, making the hag in green cry out as she was sent flying backwards.
Noticing that the witch was stopped from coming after them for a brief moment, Shaggy scooped Davey up in his arms before he and Scooby jumped out of their hole, racing to the wall.
Crying out in shock, Davey curled up, bracing for impact as the cowardly duo smashed through the wooden wall, leaving behind the shapes of their fleeing bodies.
Screaming for help, the duo ended up racing through the town and saw the mayor in the middle of the street.
He held his hands out, trying to stop them, but the duo ran him over.
Groaning in pain, Mayor Corey glanced up from his place on the ground as he watched the frightened friends fleeing for their lives.
Running around the corner, the duo ran into Velma, Ben and Veemon, knocking them down.
Davey saw this and jumped out of Shaggy's arms, which the hippy didn't notice in his frightened state, and rushed over to her partner.
"Are you guys okay?" Davey asked.
"Did anyone get the number of the truck that hit me?" Veemon groaned as he sat up.
Velma and Ben both groaned making Davey look over at them to see that their glasses had been flung off when Scooby and Shaggy knocked them to the ground.
"I can't see a thing without my glasses." Ben said.
"Me either." Velma said as they both blindly felt around the ground.
"Hold on, I'll get them." Davey told them.
Picking up the glasses, Davey looked them over.
They were very similar, but Davey remembered that Velma's lens had a blue tint to them and handed those over to the orange clad brunette.
"Thanks, Davey." Velma smiled as she put her glasses on.
Ben smiled as Davey handed his glasses over to him.
Just then, Fred and Daphne arrived, looking confused on why their friends were sitting on the cold pavement.
"Hey, what's going on?" Daphne asked.
She and Fred helped Velma and Ben to their feet while Davey scooped Veemon into her arms.
"Ask Scooby and Shaggy." Ben retorted.
"Where are they?" Fred asked.
"That's no mystery." Velma pointed behind her.
A large mail box was shaking violently and the sound of frightened whimpers could be heard from inside.
The group walked over to it and Velma opened the mail slot, peering inside at the cowardly duo.
"How the heck can they fit in there?" Veemon questioned.
"Who knows how they do anything?' Davey sighed.
"So, what happened guys?" Velma asked.
"Like, we followed the mayor to some warehouse and that ghost attacked us!" Shaggy announced.
"He did? There goes my cherry picker theory." Velma said sounding disappointed.
"Cherry picker theory? Wait till you hear what we saw at Thorn's place." Fred spoke up.
"What happened at Thorn's?" Davey asked the blond.
"Hey! Like, we were reporting first. Right, Scoob?" Shaggy slunk out of the mail slot.
"Reah!" Scooby poked his head out.
Scooby tried to follow him out, but got stuck.
Frowning, Davey and Veemon tried to help the Great Dane get out of the mail slot, but he was stuck.
Ignoring them, Shaggy continued his report on what he, Scooby and Davey had seen while they spied on the mayor.
"The mayor's one busy guy. Picking things up…"
Shaggy was cut off when Davey and Veemon managed to pull Scooby free, but the force made the trio fall on top of the hippy who groaned in pain from the weight.
"And dropping things off." Shaggy finished in a strained voice.
"Like what?" Velma asked.
"No idea, but he got a box from a hardware store that he brought to an inn. And he and the others he spoke to kept glancing around to make sure they weren't being followed or watched." Davey told her.
That made the group frown in curiosity.
How odd.
What could the mayor be hiding?
"What is going on here?" A familiar voice called.
Startled, the group turned to see an angered Mayor Corey walking over to them as he brushed his coat off.
"What's the big idea running over me?" He demanded.
Everyone was silent as Scooby and Shaggy shared nervous glances.
"Sorry about that, Mayor Corey, but we were attacked by the witch again." Davey explained as she stood up.
"W-What? Again?" Mayor Corey asked, holding a hand to his chest, looking surprised.
"Yeah. We were attacked by the witch earlier on the streets and then again a few minutes ago when we were at the warehouse." Davey told him.
That statement made the mayor grow pale.
"W-Warehouse? Oh, that's preposterous! What warehouse?" He asked.
"Davey, why don't you show us?" Daphne suggested.
Nodding, Davey scooped Veemon up in her arms and began leading the group to the warehouse.
Shaggy and Scooby were nervous about going back after they had been recently attacked, but Fred grabbed them by their collars and dragged them off.
Arriving at the warehouse that Davey, Shaggy and Scooby had followed the mayor into earlier, the werecat led the group inside and Corey turned on the lights.
Everything looked normal and the witch was gone.
"As you can see, there's nothing here. Except the damaged wall." Corey gestured to the wall.
Scooby and Shaggy sheepishly smiled as they slowly crawled through the holes their put through the wall from the scare they suffered.
"Sorry about that, Mayor. Scooby and Shaggy just lose it when they get scared. In fact, I'm worried that staying in Oak Haven may be too frightening an experience for them. I think we should leave." Velma said.
Heads perking up at that, Scooby and Shaggy felt very hopeful when they heard those words come from Velma's mouth.
As for the rest of the group, they were all shocked by what their friend announced.
"Huh?" Daphne gasped.
"What?" Fred exclaimed.
"Really?" Ben asked.
"Are you being serious?" Davey demanded.
"This doesn't sound like you!" Veemon commented.
Overjoyed, Shaggy and Scooby rushed to Velma's side, hugging her tightly as the hippy happily laughed and the dog licked her face.
"Well, I'm sorry to hear that." Mayor Corey said, but Davey took notice of the way his lips curled upwards in a brief moment.
"But I need to get one more clue before the night is over." Velma told them.
Those words made the cowardly duo deflate in disappointment as they realized that they wouldn't be leaving this town any time soon.
Smiling, Velma cupped their chins and lifted their heads up.
"Then I think I can solve the mystery of the witch's ghost before tomorrow's autumn fest." Velma said confidently.
"Now THAT sounds like you." Veemon grinned.
"Oh, great." Mayor Corey muttered looking upset.
He was quick to place a smile on his face and used his usual cheery voice when addressing the public.
"I-I'll do anything I can to help." The mayor said before walking off.
Once he was gone, Davey turned to the group.
"Okay, that tears it, I'm stating it now. That man is guilty. He's a part of this whole witch scheme." The DigiDestined of Miracles stated.
"That's a pretty bold accusation, Davey." Ben stated looking surprised.
"Yeah, well I've been tailing him and watching him very closely. He was fighting off a smile when Velma said we were leaving, then looked really disappointed when she said we were going to solve the mystery first. Also, doesn't it seem weird that NO ONE is out tonight? The streets are completely empty. The only people we saw out were the Hex Girls and the mayor. If he was simply running errands, then why was he doing it at night instead of during the day? And why was he so obsessed with making sure he wasn't being followed? Something is very off here." Davey claimed.
Ben couldn't argue with her.
He had noticed that it was far too quiet tonight and it struck him as odd.
Usually there would still be some people out and about at this time, but the streets were empty and the shops had all closed far too early.
"Like, I should have known leaving wasn't an option." Shaggy whined as he placed a hand on Scooby's back.
"What was that bluff all about, Velma?" Daphne asked her friend.
"You've got a plan, right?' Ben grinned as he placed a hand on the brunette's shoulder.
Glancing at her friends' faces, Velma gestured for them to move in close as she lowered her voice.
"Here's what we're going to do. Fred, you're going to…"
To be continued…
