"That was a good thing you did."
Robert crooked his arm as Cora slipped her hand around his elbow. He hadn't heard her walk up to him, but her smile felt like the sun. His step grew lighter.
"You think so?"
"Of course," she answered easily. "I wouldn't have said so otherwise."
They walked along the road back towards the Abbey, leaning into each with every step. They were a good match. Robert had always thought so.
"I will admit that I'm surprised that you wanted to get her nephew a plaque at all. I thought you and Carson were in agreement about that."
"I agreed with Carson that Mrs. Patmore's nephew shouldn't be on the main memorial, but he shouldn't be forgotten either." He swallowed, suddenly overcome by a wave of sentiment. "Everyone is loved by someone. If we're lucky."
Cora placed her free hand on his chest, her fingers brushing against the ribbons on his uniform. Robert kept his gaze on the road ahead. He could feel her eyes on him and he almost regretted his words. She patted his chest once more and then withdrew, falling into step beside him once again.
"Everyone is loved by someone," Cora echoed after a time. Robert finally looked at her again and she winked at him. "Thank goodness, we're lucky."
