Chapter 7: A Mother's Love

Marge stood in the kitchen mopping the floor when the phone suddenly began ringing. She stopped what she was doing and picked it up.

"Hello?"

"Hello, Mrs. Simpson, this is Principal Dondelinger. I am calling in regards to your son, Bartholomew."

"Bart? Is he all right?" She asked, a worried look on her face.

"No, Mrs. Simpsons he's not. Your son is in trouble."

"What did he do?"

"He was involved in a fight with three other students in the cafeteria this afternoon. We need you to come down here and speak with us,"

Marge sighed, "I'll be right there."

She hung up the phone and sighed.

Marge pulled up in front of Springfield High School a half-hour later and entered the building.

She walked into the main office

"Can I help you?" Mrs. Grabble asked

"Yes, I am here to speak to Principal Dondelinger,"

Dondelinger then stepped out of his office.

"Mrs. Simpson, please come in." He beckoned,

Marge entered the office and immediately Bart turned to her. She saw the black eye and bloody nose he had and her heart broke.

"Mrs. Simpson, this is Jason, Kyle, and Devon their the boys your son fought with this afternoon."

Marge turned her focus on the three boys and immediately recognized them as the ones who were picking on Bart in detention. She glared at them and they sheepishly looked away from her. "And sitting beside them, is their mother, Anne Dooley."

Anne Dooley was a middle-aged blonde-haired woman. She looked to be around her late 30's to early '40s and was wearing a waitress uniform.
Marge also noticed she had bags under her eyes and appeared exhausted.

"Nice to meet you," Marge said, extending her hand

"Likewise," The woman said, shaking her hand

"Ladies, thank you both for coming," Dondelinger walked over behind his desk and sat down, "Now as I mentioned before on the phone, your sons were involved in a fight this afternoon." He started," We tried talking to them neither one will tell us what started the fight. Fortunately for us, they don't have to."

"What do you mean?" Marge asked

Dondelinger typed something on the computer before turning the screen towards the group. It was a video of the fight from earlier.

Anne and Marge watched in silence as the video played. Bart turned away from the screen, unable to watch it. Anne glared at her sons and they looked away from her, feeling uncomfortable.

Jason, Kyle, and Devon looked over at him briefly before looking at their mother glared at them. The boys then became uncomfortable and avoided eye contact with her.

"Turn it off, please." Marge pleaded, fighting back tears.

Dondelinger did as she asked and turned off the video.

"After looking over the video multiple times we have concluded that Mr. Simpson was acting in self-defense to your son's assault."

Anne nodded her head

"So what is their punishment?"

"For the two weeks, they will come in early to work in the kitchen serving meals students. They will also stay after school to help clean up the kitchen and the cafeteria."

"But that's not fair!" Devon exclaimed

"Will we have to wear hairnets?" Kyle then asked

"Yes," Dondelinger replied, "and not only that but you will be required to wear an apron every day as well."

"What about homework?"

"Your homework will be given to you at the end of the day and I recommend getting it done because it goes toward your final grade. I want you here at 6 am."

"They'll be here, Principal Dondelinger," Anne told him.

Dondelinger nodded, "As for you Mr. Simpson," He said, turning his focus to Bart. "For your part in this fight, for the next two weeks, you will help out the custodian mopping floors and take out the garbage after school. Do you understand?"

"Yeah," Bart replied

"You can start tomorrow as well, now get to class." Bart and Marge stood up and walked out of his office.

As they exited the main office, Bart turned to her.

"I'm really sorry about this, Mom." He apologized

"Don't worry about it, sweetie. I'm just glad your okay," She pulled him into a hug, holding him tight.

"Mama's boy," Jason sneered as he and his brothers walked out of the main office with their mother close behind.

This earned him a smack on the back of the head from Anne.

"Ow!" He rubbed the back of his head, "What did you do that for?"

"Go outside and wait for me in the car. I'll be out in a minute." Anne scolded him

Jason grumbled under his breath as he, Kyle, and Devon all walked out the door. Once they were outside. Anne turned to Bart and Marge.

"Young man I want to apologize to you and your mother for what my sons did to you."

"It's okay," Bart replied

"No, it's not. They shouldn't have done that and I will punish them for it when they get 't worry, they won't bother you again."

"Thank you," Bart replied, a small smile on his face

"You're welcome. Well, I better get going take care, both of you,"

"Thank you," Marge said as she watched the woman disappeared out the door. Once she was gone, Marge turned to her son and said, "Well, sweetie I guess I better leave too. I'll be by later to come and pick you up."

"All right." Bart said, "See you later then,"

Bart watched a moment as she walked away before making his way to class. As he did, he smiled as he thought about his mother and all the times she had been there for him. Ever since he was a small child she had stood up for him.

Whether it was against parents, teachers, or even against other kids who picked on him, she was always there to help him through whatever problem he was having. When the rest of the world had given up on him, she was there standing in his corner and he always appreciated that.

Homer sat there at his work console, listening to his cell phone ring repeatedly, "Come on, Marge, where are you?" He said as her voicemail soon kicked in and he hung up. Just then the door hissed open and in walked Lenny and Carl. "Hey, Homer, it's lunchtime let's go!" Lenny called to him.

"I'll be there in a minute,"

"What are you doing?" It was Carl who spoke this time

The two men walked over to him, the door closing behind them.

"I am trying to call Marge, she's not picking and I'm starting to get worried," Homer explained to his friends as he listened to the phone once more ring and ring before hanging up. "I am sure she's all right, pal." Lenny reassured him, "She's probably just someplace where she can't hear her phone right now."

"You think so?"

"Sure," Carl responded, "If Marge could pick up the phone she would. She is probably down in the laundry room, or maybe she is running the vacuum cleaner or something and can't hear it. I'm sure everything is okay, and she will call you back soon."

"Now come on, let's go something to eat I'm starved!" Carl beckoned

"Nah, you guys go on ahead without me. I think I am just going to stay here and get some work done," Homer said, as he returned to his work

Lenny and Carl looked at each other briefly before turning back to Homer.

"Are you sure, Homer? We're going to Krusty Burger." Lenny asked him

Homer nodded his head

"Yeah, I'm sure."

"Well, you gotta eat. Do you want us to bring you back something?"

"That's okay, Marge packed me something, I'll eat it in a little bit."

"Okay, we'll see you later, Homer." Carl and Lenny walked out of the room, the door hissing open as they left. The door shut once more and Homer was left alone once more, all the while hoping Marge was all right.

Marge walked in the door with grocery bags. She had stopped at the Kwik-E-Mart and picked a few things for dinner that night.

She brought the groceries bags into the kitchen, when she heard her phone chirp, notifying her she had gotten something on her phone. She set the bags down on the table and pulled out her phone. She had several voicemails from Homer where he had called her multiple times.

She murmured, "He's probably worried about me because I didn't talk to him when I normally do," She dialed his number and put the phone to her ear, listening to it ring.

"Hello?" The voice on the other end asked

"Homie?" She asked, "It's me,"

"Marge, thank goodness, where were you? I was so worried,"

"Bart got in trouble for fighting at school. So I was down there dealing with that,"

"He didn't get suspended did he?" Homer asked concerned

"No," Marge replied, "But he does have to help out the custodian after school for the next two weeks,"

"I see," Homer said, "Well, I am glad he didn't get suspended."

"He probably would have it hadn't been if several students hadn't recorded the incident and posted it online. The video showed Bart was defending himself against the three boys. I am just glad he didn't get seriously hurt by them," She explained as she put away the groceries.

"Me too," Homer nodded,

"Well, I better get going I have a few things I need to do before I pick up the kids from school. You have a good day, Homie."

"You too, I'll be home as soon as I can." He said to her, "Oh, and Marge?"

"Yes, Homer?"

"I love you,"

She smiles at his words, " I love you too,"

Marge hung up the phone and her smile faded. It had been hard to be without him. They had never been apart this long, ever and it got harder every day to not be able to see him, to not be able to be with him as much as she wanted to be. She knew he felt the same way but these phones were all they had for right and though they were miles apart, it somehow brought them closer to each other.

A/N: That is it for Chapter 7 I know it is short but I felt this was a good place to stop it. I am currently working on the outline for Chapter 8 and will be writing it soon. Take care, everyone!
