After having celebratory drinks with the family, they had all gathered in the main building's entrance to receive their keys. Harry assumed they were all staying in the main building, that they would all have a room there, but the boys had arranged for them all to each have their own little cabin. Some were close to the main building, others a little further off - closer to the woods and the lake.
Harry didn't mind which cabin he and Ginny ended up staying in, so when James and Teddy were disappointed with the one they got, they gladly swapped. So they ended up with one quite a walk off from the main building, with a view on the woods.
"It's beautiful, isn't it?" Harry points out as he sets his suitcase down on his side of the bed. There is no reply though, and when he turns around, he finds Ginny checking the bed to see if it's one of those double beds that can be pulled apart so it's two single beds. "Seriously?"
"I want to take a nap, Harry. I had to get up at three, then drive all the way to yours… can you please not pick a fight with me?"
"I'm not…," Harry tries, but then he gives a nod and he helps her pull the bed apart. "I'll let you sleep for a bit. Do you want me to wake you up for dinner?"
"I'll set an alarm."
Ginny kicks off her shoes, before disappearing into the bathroom to get changed. So Harry leaves their cabin to leave her to take her nap, and to have a chance to check out the estate by himself.
He can see why Albus and Scorpius chose this place for their Winter Wonderland Wedding, because as it is now in the snow, it looks like something out of a movie. It feels like they've travelled into a fairytale, and he half-expects Santa and his reindeer to come walking by. He's not too far off though, because in the distance he can see some deer running into the woods, and it makes him chuckle - because how the hell did they end up here? Years ago they were fighting a war - on different sides with the man soon to become family even - and now they're all together at a wedding? It feels like a bad dream, but Harry knows that there is no waking up from this.
He makes his way past the cabins, the hottub, the outside bar which is closed now, and by the time the sun is starting to set and his toes are starting to freeze, he finds himself at the opposite side of the estate, where some of the other cabins are.
Draco's cabin must be there, because Harry spots him running around in the snow. It seems odd - more than odd, suspicious even - until he sees Albus and Scorpius' little pup running back to him with his toy.
Harry had always known Draco to be a stuck-up git, and he can't remember ever seeing him smile or laugh - unless he was laughing at someone. Yet there is something carefree about the man he sees, and even though he knows that this is that boy, he struggles to connect the two. They are just too far apart, and something about it makes him feel too uncomfortable.
He can't walk away though, and he finds himself watching Draco and the pup for the longest time. Draco looking so warm and cozy, all snuggled up in his oversized purple coat. The colour reminds Harry of The Knight Bus, and on anyone else it would have looked ridiculous, but as he thought when he saw him earlier, Draco looks strangely handsome in it. He definitely seems to have grown into his looks, even Harry can't deny that. He seems to glow, even with the bags under his eyes and exhausted as he looks.
Draco finally sits down on a log - the pup excitedly jumping up and down around him because he wants to play some more - and Harry almost considers going over to him to try and talk to him. But just as he is about to take a step, he hears Ron calling out his name.
He is surprised at how disappointed, and even a little irritated he is to not be able to go talk to Draco. But he manages to hide his feelings, and he flashes Ron his best smile as he pulls him into a bearhug - Ron clearly having had one too many drinks already.
"What are you doing out here?"
"What am I doing out here?" Harry laughs, hoping to be able to avoid having to answer, because even though he used to share everything with Ron and Hermione, they don't know everything about the problems between him and Ginny yet. "What are you doing out here?"
"Luna came over to our cabin, and her and Hermione started discussing their dresses for the wedding… then Hermione got talking about our wedding again…" Ron shrugs, clearly not interested in any of it. "She picked out my suit, you know?"
"I know," Harry laughs as he leads him away from that area, but not until he has taken one final look at Draco who is still playing with the pup.
"So… your boy is marrying Malfoy's son, huh?" Ron teases as he nearly stumbles over his own feet. "Can you imagine, Malfoy being your father-in-law?"
Harry cringes at the thought, and he has to remind himself that the Malfoy they used to know is not the one who will be Albus' father-in-law. Still, when Ron says it out loud like that, it still makes him shiver.
"Scorpius is a nice boy though," Harry tries, but it sounds like he is trying to convince himself, more than anything.
"Nothing like his dad, then?"
"I don't know… maybe Hermione was right. Maybe he has changed."
"Right!" Ron scoffs.
"I hope he has," Harry chuckles uncomfortably. "Every family event, I'm going to be stuck with him from now on for the rest of my life."
Ron tries his hardest not to laugh at the expense of his best friend, but the thought is just too absurd, and even Harry has to laugh. And as they make their way over to Hermione and Ron's cabin - so Ron can take a nap to sober up before dinner - Harry can't help but wonder what it will be like, to have Draco be a part of his family from now on. To have him be a part of his life again.
