After having had a coffee with Draco, Harry had gone back to his and Ginny's cabin. He wasn't sure why, but as soon as he stepped inside, he felt guilty. They were no longer together, and nothing had happened between him and Draco - he wasn't even sure what it was that he was feeling, perhaps it was just relief that Draco was no longer the young man he had once been - but still he felt like he had done something wrong.
He wasn't sure what to tell Ginny though, or what to apologise for exactly, so instead he tried to ignore his feelings and he had asked her about the museum. She seemed to be in a better mood than that morning, and she enthusiastically told him about her day. For a moment it had almost been like old times, and it had given Harry a glimmer of hope that one day they would be friends again, like they had once been.
Everyone was excited about their day, and throughout dinner they all couldn't wait to share stories about, in Luna's case, the treasures she had found, or in Arthur's case, the brilliant art they had seen. Or, in Teddy's case, how he had crashed into the wall and ended up with a split lip and a sprained wrist. Harry had quietly listened to everyone, as he felt like he didn't have much to add. He could tell them about his new coat, or about the peppermint coffee he had had, but who would care about that, when they could hear about how Lily and her boyfriend had seen a deer with her baby on their way back?
Today had been great, from his walk with Draco that morning, to dinner with the family. Harry should have no trouble falling asleep, as there had been no fighting - nothing to worry about. Still, he can't stop thinking about Draco, or more specifically, how he feels when he's around him. It worries him, because this is Draco Malfoy, and the more he thinks about it, the more he talks himself out of it being feelings of friendship. The more he starts thinking that this is how it feels when you're about to fall head over heels in love with someone.
He knows he needs to stop thinking such things, because he hardly even knows the man. They have spent no more than a day together, and even if they had spent longer together, this is still Draco Malfoy we're talking about. It's simply not possible for him to fall for Malfoy. Even if he has changed. Even if he is handsome. Even if he has…
Harry jumps up out of bed, sick of his own thoughts, and after throwing on his new coat and some shoes, he heads out to see if the bar is still open. But before he has even entered the bar, he spots Draco curled up in one of the lounge chairs by the large Christmas tree in the lobby. He has his legs pulled up to his chest, a steaming mug of hot chocolate in his hands and he is staring out of the window - his eyes focussed on the moon.
"May I join you?" Harry asks, "Unless you want to be alone?"
Draco doesn't answer, but he nudges at the lounge chair next to him. Harry only now noticing just how tired he looks. He had looked tired before, but he had smiled it away, and Harry figured it must be because his son was getting married, or because the boys had kept him awake last night. But this seems like a different kind of exhaustion, and when he sits down next to him - after having gotten another drink for Draco, and one for himself - he can't help but feel worried about him.
"Are you okay?" he asks, hoping he's not crossing a line by sticking his nose into his business. "You look tired. You're not sick, are you?"
"I'm not," Draco says, and for a moment it seems like he is going to leave it at that. Until his face softens, and he sighs into his mug of chocolate. "I have messed everything up, Harry."
Harry assumes he is talking about the wedding, but he can't possibly imagine what he could have messed up, as the boys had arranged the whole thing themselves. He's not quite sure what to say to this confession either, because if Draco had been sick, he would probably know what to say or do - he would know how to help him or reassure him. But this, he can tell from the look on Draco's face, is much more serious than a simple cold or a sleepless night.
"Do you want to talk about it?" he finally asks.
"You don't want to know," Draco mutters, and Harry almost accepts it. Because sure, he is curious now, but part of him also doesn't want to know. They're here for a wedding, and they can finally get on without fighting, so why add this to it and possibly make things awkward between them again? Or what if Draco is in trouble? He doesn't want to know about that, does he?
But he does want to know, because he can tell that something big is on Draco's mind, and that it's eating away at him. He's worried about him, because, oddly enough, he cares about him, and he wants him to be okay.
"You can talk to me," he reassures him, and although Draco seems to hesitate for a moment, he does accept the offer.
"Will you promise me that you won't tell Scorp? Or Ginny?"
"I promise." Harry nods, starting to get seriously worried now. That he can't tell Scorpius, he understands, but having to keep it from Ginny? That means it must be bad.
"I lost my job at the bakery," Draco admits, and before Harry can say anything, he adds, "and I am going to be homeless in just a few weeks."
"Oh… wow…"
"And I'm pregnant."
It takes a second for the words to truly hit Harry, but once they do, he can feel his body starting to tingle, his heart racing as he tries to take in what Draco has just told him.
A long silence follows, and Harry wishes he could say something, but not a word comes out, and when he finally manages to look back up at the other man, he can tell by the look on his face that he has taken his deadly silence as judgment.
"That's why I didn't want to tell you." Draco nods, and he sets his mug down, ready to get up and leave. But Harry stops him, and he flashes a reassuring smile.
"Sit down. I'm just… I'm not sure if I should be congratulating you."
"For messing up my life?"
"You're pregnant," Harry points out, his heart making a little jump as the words leave his mouth. "That's great, is it not?"
"Is it?"
Harry looks at him, and he wonders how he didn't see it before. Seeing the way Draco's sweater falls on his belly - now knowing he has a baby growing there - it makes him feel emotional in a way he doesn't quite understand, and it makes him feel protective over him.
"May I ask about the father?" he asks, now definitely wondering why Draco is here by himself.
"He works at the bakery," Draco sighs. It's clearly a painful subject, so Harry doesn't want to push him, but it does make him wonder if this has something to do with Draco losing his job. It seems like too much of a coincidence. "It wasn't anything serious," Draco finally explains, "and when I told him I'm pregnant, he gave me money. To 'fix' it."
"I'm so sorry, Draco."
Draco shrugs it off and he turns his gaze towards the moon again. Harry can tell by his sniffling that he is trying hard not to cry though, and that all of this is getting more to him than he is willing to let on.
"Why don't you want Scorpius to know?" Harry asks. "He will have to find out eventually, doesn't he?"
"How am I supposed to tell him about this?" Draco asks as he looks back at him - no longer trying to hold back the tears. "I have no work, I have no place to live, I am about to have a baby…"
Harry can sense the sheer panic in his voice, and all he wants to do is give him a hug and tell him that everything is going to be alright, but he fears that if he were to try and give Draco a hug right now, he would only upset him more.
"You can find another job," Harry tries to reassure him, "and I'm sure you can find somewhere else to live before you will have to move out. And…"
"I'm pregnant, Harry."
"I know," Harry nods, because he knows that it's not the work situation or even the living situation that Draco is worried about.
"My son is getting married. He's ready to start a family of his own, and here I am, at my age, ready to start all over…"
"So? You're not the first person to have a baby at our age. We're not old yet."
"I'm on my own though. When Scorpius was born, Astoria was alive and we did everything together. I have no idea how I'm going to be able to do any of this by myself," Draco admits, something about him being so honest and vulnerable making Harry feel even more protective over him.
"Just because the father is not around, does not mean you will have to do everything on your own," Harry assures him, the 'I am here for you' on the tip of his tongue, but he can't get the words out.
"I am though," Draco disagrees. But when he places his hand on his bump, a soft smile forms in his lips, and it's obvious that no matter how scared he is and no matter how dire the situation is, he already loves this baby more than anything. "But I have no choice, do I? I will have to find a way to do it."
"You're a great father to Scorpius, Draco, and you are going to be a great father to this baby," Harry tells him, and he can tell from the grateful smile on the other man's face how much these words mean to him.
Harry quickly looks away though, because he can feel the affection for Draco growing by the second. It feels like this is about to tip over into something else, and no matter how nice it has been to talk to him - even if it only happened because Draco was struggling - he knows that he has to do whatever he can to try and stop himself from falling for this man. If it hadn't already been impossible for them to be together before, it sure would be impossible now - what with Draco being pregnant.
"I'm sorry to put this all on you," Draco chuckles uncomfortably as he picks his drink - which is cold by now - back up to finish it.
"That's alright." Harry smiles warmly. "I told you, you can talk to me. I know we haven't always gotten along…"
"That's one way to put it," Draco scoffs.
"... but I hope things can be different from now on," Harry continues, ignoring Draco's comment. "We're going to be seeing a lot more of each other, so I would like for us to be friends."
"Friends? I'm sure Ginny would love that," Draco teases, the panic and shame from before now gone. He seems to be more at ease again, and Harry can tell that talking helped him. But him mentioning Ginny - him assuming that they are still a married couple, it makes him feel uncomfortable, because it feels like he is repaying Draco's honesty by lying straight to his face, and he hates that. He promised Ginny that he wouldn't tell anyone about the divorce though, and he won't break that promise - not even for Draco.
