Chapter 2 - Ruby Comes to Beacon

Now Playing… Please Don't Inhale the Cinema Patrons (Kirby and the Forgotten Land)

Kirby was peacefully snoozing on a chair, oblivious to the world around him. He just had a snack, and if the position of the sun was anything to go by, he had just enough time to take a nap before he had to go save the world. Fridays are the best days in his book.

And, as what normally happens when Kirby has a peaceful sleep, the rest of the world burns from the invading forces of darkness. Metaphorically, of course. According to Oz whatever-his-name-is, a lot of people from Dream Land fell into Remnant, literally.

With the current population of Remnant having more than tripled in the span of a few minutes, things naturally fell into disarray, if only for a few short hours. Most people were rightfully cautious of literal aliens, while a minority of people wrote them off as harmless because of their cute and cuddly appearance. In his sleep, Kirby smiled when he remembered the shocked look on the news reporters face's when a squadron of Sir Kibbles and Blade Knights cut down an Ursa. They ganged up on it to secure the win, but the point still stands.

Kirby groggily opened his eyes, catching sight of a Waddle Dee nervously swinging his feet on the edge of his seat. Kirby questioningly poyo'd, getting the Waddle Dee's attention.

"Oh, hey Kirby! Nice weather we're having today, huh?" He asked nervously. Kirby looked outside, still half asleep. It was bright and sunny, with no signs of interdimensional portals in the sky. Kirby nodded. It looked like it was going to be a nice day today.

Kirby turned back and pointed to the Waddle Dee, who he decided to call Bob. He looks like a Bob.

"Huh? I'm fine, honest!" Bob quickly said. "I mean, sure, we're all stuck in another dimension–again–but I'm fine! Everythings fine!" Kirby looked at him with confusion, which quickly turned into a look of concern. Kirby poked him in the stomach.

"Alright, alright! Everything's not fine! I'm scared! Waddle Dee Town was alright because we had Meta Knight protecting us! But now, we don't know where any of our friends are, and we're surrounded by people who aren't very friendly! I'm worried something bad is going to happen…" Bob vented, physically deflating with each word he spoke. "I feel like they're watching me, even in the restrooms!" Kirby looked over Bob's shoulder, and found a crowd of humans filming their talk.

Kirby tried his best to intimidate them, but only succeeded in making them coo and say, "Aww!" Curse his cuteness!

"I miss my friends, my home, my cake. I even think I left the oven on…" Bob moaned. Kirby's expression saddened, seeing an innocent Waddle Dee missing his friends and family. So, Kirby reached into his hammer space, and pulled out a big, red, juicy tomato with a big black M printed on the front. He tore the fruit in two, and after some hesitance, handed the bigger slice to Bob.

"Is that… for me?" Bob asked. Kirby vigorously nodded, and placed it in his hands. Bob looked at it for a moment, unsure of what to do. "...Thanks, Kirby." The two Dream Landers munched on their tomatoes, trying their best to ignore the confused cries of onlookers trying to figure how Bob can eat, despite not having a mouth.

Bob the Waddle Dee left shortly after their shared snack, waddling over to a small crowd of Waddle Dees talking amongst themselves.

Kirby smiled to himself. He looked out the window and simply admired the view. And then, he dozed off once more, becoming oblivious to the world as he dreamed of cakes as far as the eye can see.

A couple of seconds later, Ruby and Yang walked in, with the smaller girl pulling her older sister by the arm.

"I told you! Last night, I fought gangsters with those aliens, a pink one! He sucked up their guns and fire and then suddenly he had a gun and could breathe fire! He created a giant fire dragon and IT WAS AWESOME!" Ruby gushed. She let go of Yang's hand and started mimicking what she could remember from yesterday, including sound effects, poyo's and Kirby's dance moves. She ended up falling on her face, but Yang quickly picked her up.

"There he is!" Ruby shouted as she spotted the puffball of the hour, and quickly clamped her hands against her mouth when she realized that he was sleeping. "There he is…!" She whispered, pointing at Kirby. Yang raised an eyebrow and looked between her sister and the marshmallow.

"Okay, so let me get this straight: You walked to a dust store in the middle of night to look at weapon magazines?" Yang asked, and Ruby nodded. "Then the store was getting robbed by Roman Torchwick, one the most wanted criminals in Remnant?" Again, Ruby nodded. "And, when things were about to get dicey, Kirby, this guy right here–" she said, gesturing to Kirby, "–came out of nowhere, and started fighting with you?"

Ruby nodded frantically. "Yes, yes! I told all of this to you last night! It's truuue!" Yang looked at her skeptically, and then back to Kirby. "So, how big was the gun he swallowed?" She asked. "About this big?" Ruby answered, spreading her arms to the weapon's approximate size, which was a good feet wider than Kirby on both sides.

"You do know that's wider than Kirby, right?"

Ruby pouted. "He's squishy and stretchy!"

"Really?" Yang kneeled down so that she was eye-level with Kirby, and poked him. "Yeah, you're right! He is squishy!" She exclaimed, and started poking him some more. "Don't do that! You'll wake him up!" Ruby cried, flailing her arms. Yang just chuckled.

"Don't do that!" Ruby cried, putting her older sister in a choke hold. Yang yelped, more out of surprise than actually pain. Still, Ruby was surprisingly strong for a girl her age. "Alright, alright, I give!" Yang laughed, tapping Ruby's arms. Both girls froze when Kirby shifted, now sleeping on his stomach. Probably.

Both of them let out a sigh of relief when he didn't wake up. Yang puts a finger to her lips and the two sisters quietly tip-toe away. "Still, inhaling and copying abilities? That's a bit too hard to believe," Yang comments, to which Ruby cheekily smiles. "Oh, just wait until he uses his powers on you!" She says.

Ruby catches a glimpse of the city below and walks over to the window, admiring the view from below. "Huh, I guess home is too far after all." Yang walks to next and places an arm around her shoulder, pulling her into a half hug. "Beacon's our home now," She says.

Please Don't Inhale the Cinema Patrons - Fade Out

Shortly after, the airship they were riding in lands on Beacon's port. When the doors open, a blonde kid wearing a hoodie and armor runs out, holding his hands to his mouth. He reaches a trash can and retches.

Now Playing… Natural Plains (Kirby and the Forgotten Land)

Yang shrugs. "Well, I guess the view wasn't for everybody. C'mon Rubes!" Yang grabs her little sister's arms and drags her outside. Ruby protests for a moment as was about to say something, until something sparkly caught her eye.

"Woah! What is that?" Ruby asked, eyes sparkling and releasing herself from her sister's grip to more closely inspect the weapon. She was staring at a blue and white battle axe with a snowflake design in the middle. The air around it seemed to freeze, creating small particles of ice and frost that gently fell to the ground. "Woah! This is so cool! Did you make this?"

"Hmm?" The one who was holding the weapon turned around, a floating woman with disembodied hands and wearing a black and purple dress. The dress covered her face, revealing only her icy cold eyes. She had long blue hair, which was covered with a beret the same color as her dress. In the middle of the hat was an M with a sword in the middle. A Dream Lander, Ruby realized.

"Oh, you must be one of the new students. The entrance ceremony will take place in the auditorium, over there," The woman said in a slightly annoyed tone, pointing to the building on the other side of the main road. "If you'll excuse me, I have important business to attend to. Jambuhbye."

Her gaze lingered on Ruby for a moment. She floated away, instructing the Waddle Dees to follow her.

Ruby deflated. "Man… She looked like I was a piece of dirt on the floor," She muttered, as Yang walked next to her. "Well, I guess not every Dream Lander is all sunshine and rainbows," She commented. Still, she was as cute as any of the other Dream Landers.

"Well, if the Dream Landers are here, then that means our year at Beacon is going to be more interesting than we thought," Yang says, looking at the batch of Waddle Dees being escorted by Bonkers and the floating ice lady. "All right Rubes, let's get a move… on? Hey, Ruby?" Yang turned, trying to find her younger sister, who had disappeared from her side. "Come on, how does she keep doing that?" Yang mutters, just as she was about to cup her hands and shout for her.

Natural Plains - Cut Off

*BOOM!*

Now Playing… Comedic Curtains (Mario & Luigi: Dream Team)

"RUBY!" Rushing over to the sound, Yang nearly ran into a crater that definitely wasn't there before, with her sister rubbing her nose, and girl in a white dress and white hair and–that's a lot of white now that Yang thinks about–covered in soot and ranting to her younger sister.

"Unbelievable!" The white girl shouted. "This is exactly the kind of thing I was talking about!"

"I'm really, really sorry…!" Ruby apologized, but the white-wearing girl was still fuming.

"You complete DOLT!" She shouted, making Ruby flinch. Those scrutinizing eyes definitely didn't help either. "What are you even doing here? Aren't you a little young to be attending Beacon?"

"Well, I-I… umm…"

"For your information, my sister was accepted two years early!" Yang said, stepping between the girls. The eyes of the one harassing her sister bulged for a moment, but she quickly recomposed herself, dusting off the remaining soot from her dress. …Seriously, who fights with a dress?

Comedid Curtains - Fade Out

"If she was admitted early, then she should have the skills of a warrior, shouldn't she?" The girl glared at Ruby. "The only thing I see is an incompetent, bumbling, sorry excuse for a dolt." She said harshly. Ruby's eyes widened for a moment, and then her head dipped down.

"Why you little–!" Yang flexed her wrist, unfolding Ember Celica as she reared back her fist. The other girl noticed this and reached for the rapier attached to her hip.

Suddenly, a wall of flames appeared between them, knocking both girls down, and turning the floor to molten rock. The fire died down, revealing a wavy sword with a red hilt, and a very irritated floating woman with red curly hair. Ruby noticed that she had the same attire as the blue-haired Dream Lander from before.

The woman's disembodied hand grabbed the sword, which disappeared in a torrent of fire. Then, she gave a death stare to both Yang and the other girl.

"Unless both of you want to be expelled before school even begins, you will report to the auditorium. Immediately." She spoke, her tone even colder than her icy counterpoint. Ruby meekly raised a hand to ask about her weapon, but she quickly shut up when her death gaze turned toward her.

Comedic Curtains - Fade in

"What are you two doing here?" The woman asked. Yang followed her gaze, and saw Waddle Dee wearing a bow tie, pushing a cart stacked with multiple briefcases. An Awoofy was also there, sleeping on top of the luggage with a similar looking bow.

"Oh, Miss Flamberge! Don't mind me; we're just helping out a friend!" he said, nodding to the girl in the white dress.

"That doesn't matter!" Flamberge said, grabbing the Waddle Dee by the stub, and hoisting the still sleeping Awoofy on her shoulder. "You can play with her later!"

"Besides, she's training to be a huntress! She can carry her own bags with her own two hands!" Flamberge said, glaring at the girl. She was about to say something, but Flamberge only glared harder, making all three of the girls flinch. Flamberge floated away, dragging the Waddle Dee and Awoofy along with her.

"Gustav! Ludwig! I'll still see you two for lunch, right?!" The girl asked, waving her arms. The Waddle Dee turned around and waved his hand. "You bet! Bye-bye Miss Weiss, and good luck on your test!"

The two strange friends continued waving tearfully at each, giving the Rose-Xiao Long sisters time to leave the scene before Weiss could notice.

Comedic Curtains - Fade Out

In the background, a black-haired girl watched the scene carefully, tightly gripping a bottle of dust in her hands. "Typically Schnee," she huffed, and threw the bottle away.

Now Playing… The Base (Sonic Adventure 2)

The two sisters walked in the auditorium in silence, which was occasionally broken by Ruby gasping at new, cool weapons.

"Man, Dream Landers can get intense when they want to…" Yang mumbled, and Ruby nodded. "Yeah, you're right. But did you see that fire semblance she had! It melted the floor! Imagine how much damage that'll do to a monster. Actually, with how hot it was, she might be able to win a fight in a second!" Ruby gushed. She started making multiple sounds imitating flames and waving her hands around. Yang laughed at her acting, and rustled Ruby's hair.

Ruby's acting was interrupted by the feedback of a microphone. They both looked to the center of the auditorium, where Ozpin and Glynda Goodwitch were standing. The headmaster pushed up his glasses, and started speaking.

"I'll… keep this brief. You have traveled here today in search of knowledge. To hone your craft and acquire new skills. And when you have finished, you plan to dedicate your life to the protection of the people. But I look amongst you, and all I see is wasted potential, in need of purpose, direction. You assume knowledge will free you of this, but your time in this school will prove to you that knowledge can only carry you so far. It is up to you to take the first step.

"On to other announcements, I'm sure that many of you have noticed new… faces around our campus. These people come from the far away world of Dream Land, on the Planet Pop Star. Because of their sudden appearance, the four Huntsman Academies have decided that they will serve as a place of refuge for these troubled souls, until they find a way back home, or until a more permanent settlement can be established. You are to treat them with the utmost respect, as you would your friends and family. Any form of harassment will be dealt with swiftly and accordingly. You are training to be protectors of the world, so act like it.

"If you have any question regarding the Dream Landers, please talk to Professor Meta Knight, Francisca, Flamberge, or Zan Partizanne," Ozpin concluded, the Three Mage Sisters floating down from the ceiling and bowing, eliciting hushed whispers from the crowd. As he walked away Glynda Goodwitch walked up to the mike.

"You will gather in the ballroom tonight. The Professors will escort you there. Tomorrow, your initiation begins. Be ready. You are dismissed."

The yellow woman, Zan Partizanne, raised her disembodied hand and created a spear from the electricity. "If everyone could please follow me to the ballroom," She ordered, nodding to the other two mages as they floated to either side of the crowd.

For some reason, Ruby felt the piercing gaze of Francisca and Flamberge on her neck.

The Base - Fade out

Now Playing… Waddle Dee Town (Kirby and the Forgotten Land)

The next morning, Ruby groggily woke up from the beams of light hitting her face. She rose up and yawned, pushing the blankets off her and stretching. Sleepily, she started rocking Yang's shoulder, trying to wake her up.

"Yaaaang…! We gotta wake up, it's a school day…" Ruby moaned, rocking her shoulder even more. Yang groaned, and turned to the other side, only for Ruby to pick up her corgi pillow and slam it into her head. Yang still didn't budge, and had started snoring as well. If Ruby was semi-awake, she'd probably be a stuttering mess from the glares being sent her way.

"Yang, if you don't wake up, I'll cut your hair, got it…?" She mumbled. The blonde's eyes shot open, and she instantly packed up their sleeping bags and tossed a bag of clothes to Ruby's face, knocking her down.

"Come on Ruby! We don't want to be late for our initiation!" Yang said, perhaps a bit too quickly. Ruby grumbled, but followed her to the restrooms to change. They took about half an hour there, mainly because Yang had to use an abridged version of her daily hair care routine.

They took their seats in the cafeteria, waiting for their food to come.

"Hey, where do you think Kirby is?" Ruby asked Yang, who shrugged. "Who knows. Maybe he's off taking a nap somewhere?" She responded. "Or maybe he's doing something on his own?"

They heard the sounds of a door opening, and when they both turned their heads, they could only see a pyramid of cakes shaped like pink cars, carried by a large group of Waddle Dees and escorted by Bonkers and Sir Kibbles. Both mouths hung open as somebody cleared their throats.

"Excuse me, can I have your attention please?" A strange voice said. Standing on the table was an orange oval-like creature wearing an apron, a chef's hat, and a big, goofy smile. "I know things have been hard since we made a surprise visit to your world, so we'd like to take a moment to apologize.

"Me and the Waddle Dees have teamed up to make a mountain of Car-by Cakes, made of the finest ingredients found in your school's kitchen! Please enjoy these delicious cakes, so that you can have the strength to persevere through your test!"

The Waddle Dees started grabbing plates and placing cakes on them, handing them out to the students and saying "Thank you!" Ruby squealed when her cake was handed to her, though whether it was because the Waddle Dees being cute or the thought of food.

Eagerly, she picked up her fork, and then she noticed something strange about the cake. "Is that… Kirby?" The cake itself looked like Kirby was trying to inhale a car, but got stuck halfway through. It even had strawberries for feet.

"Of course it is!" Ruby turned, and was face to face with the chef creature. "Name's Chef Kawasaki, madam!" He said, tipping his hat. "It's called mouthful mode, a new ability Kirby gained a couple weeks ago! That's what happens when something is too big for him to swallow in one go!" Chef Kawasaki explained.

"Umm… why can he do that?" Yang asked, and the chef shrugged.

"Who knows? It might have something to do with a shift in his molecular structure when crossing dimensions through an unstable wormhole created by a deranged and psychopathic god-like chinchilla?" Chef Kawasaki theorized.

Yang and Ruby's eyes turned into blank circles. "Wait, what?"

"Chef Kawasaki, please," A formal voice said. Zan Partizanne floated in front of them, and whispered something to the chef, who's eyes widened. "That's right! I need to finish my souffle before you youngsters finish your scary test! Bye-Bye, don't let the Scarfies bite!" And with the wave of his hat, Chef Kawasaki ran back to the kitchen to finish whatever dish he was making.

Zan Partizanne looked at the two girls, and then gestured to the cakes.

"Huh? Oh, right!" Ruby turned to the cake and (after saying sorry millions of times) carefully cut into it and took a bite. Her eyes sparkled.

"Yang! This is delicious!" Ruby exclaimed, carelessly taking the cake appart and shoving it into her mouth. "It doesn't beat cookies, but it's definitely up there!" She said, her mouth stuffed with dessert. After seeing her sister's reaction, Yang decided to take a mouthful herself.

"Damn, you're right! This stuff is good!" And then she picked up the plate and scooped the rest of it in her mouth, burping and sighing satisfactorily when she finished. Zan Partizanne giggled.

"I'll be sure to give Kawasaki and the Waddle Dees your comments," The floating woman said.

"Tell me, why is it that you wish to become a huntsman?" Zan Partizanne asked out of the blue. Ruby blinked. Where did that come from? "Well, my mom used to tell me stories about heroes and monsters, and I guess I wanted to be like the heroes my mom read to me about, a-and help people less fortunate than me," Ruby answered. Yang ruffled her hair and smiled.

"I see," Zan Partizanne responded, and then looked at Ruby intensely, as if analyzing her. Yang saw this, and then moved in front of her protectively. Zan Partizanne pretended not to notice.

"Well, I must get going. The Halberd is going to repair itself," She said, and floated away. Yang and Ruby looked at each. "Well, at least she seems nice?" Ruby suggested. I wonder what that's all about, she asked herself.

"Ruby, you okay?" Yang asked worriedly. Ruby nodded, and said "I'm fine. Come on, we've got an initiation to ace!" She said, pumping out her fist. Yang smiled back, and they bumped fists as they made their way to the locker room.

On their way, they passed by Wiess, who was spoon feeding the Waddle Dee wearing a bow tie, while an Awoofy was sleeping on her lap.

Waddle Dee Town - Fade Out

"Gah! How do you work this Jamblasted thing!?" Flamberge cried, violently shaking the scroll, and punching the screen. Ozpin was doing everything in his power to keep himself from laughing. He took the tablet from Flamberge, and tapped a button, turning the device. "Oh," Flamberge deadpanned.

"It's quite simple, once you know how it works," Ozpin comments, just as the prospective students appeared and took their places on the platforms. He glanced at each of them, taking special note of Ruby.

Now Playing… Strategy (Sonic Adventure 2)

"For years, you have trained to become warriors, and today, your abilities will be evaluated in the Emerald Forest," Ozpin began, as Flamberge floated in front of him.

"Listen up! Those rumors about teams aren't going to be rumors for much longer, because you're all going to get somebody to call your teammate!" Flamberge shouted, drawing a meek cry from the crowd. If she had a mouth, she would be smiling.

"These teammates will be with you for the rest of your time here at Beacon, so it is in your best interest to work with someone whom you can work well with. That being said, the first person you make eye contact with will be your partner for the next four years."

WHAT?! Ruby mentally cried, her world shattering around her. This was not her day.

"After you've partnered up, make your way to the northern end of the forest. You will meet opposition along the way. Do not hesitate to destroy everything in your path, or you will die. You will be monitored and graded for the duration of the initiation, but our instructors will not intervene." Flamberge made a huffing sound, and crossed her disembodied arms.

"There's an abandoned temple at the end of the road. Each pair is going to take one 'relic' and come back here. Your grade is based on how scratched both you and the relic are, as well as your time and the way you approach combat," Flamberge explained. "Questions?"

"Y-yeah, um–"

"No? Great! Jambuhbye!" Without any warning, Flamberge slammed her fist into the Scroll, and the screen turned red. At the same time, the platforms each student was standing on erupted, launching all of them into the forest with surprised shouts. Flamberge cackled. "You're right, this is fun!" Ozpin sighed. He hoped that Kirby wasn't giving Glynda any trouble

"Your little surprise is already in position, correct?" Ozpin asked, and Flamberge nodded. "Yup. His roots are probably all over the forest right now. He'll keep an eye on them, make sure they're safe," Flamberge said. She taps the screen and glares at the footage of Ruby.

A heart shaped portal appeared in the sky. Ozpin sensed it, and turned around. It was already gone before he could look at it.
