Steve Rogers spent working as an office staff for the US Army. Keeping and creating the documents and files were the most tedious task he had. Even his work could earn a little, he was able to spend wisely. He could afford to go and watch at the movie theater.
On a weekend, he was at the movie theater watching the US Army fighting against the Axis Powers and eating popcorn. Steve was indeed enjoying his time. After watching the World War movie, he was contemplating to join the frontlines and thinking of leaving his desk job. Somehow, he would try to convince his superior officer to help him.
Several days later, he was able to attend some training exercises, however he was having a difficulty to catch up with some tasks and activities. Some of his fellow trainees murmured and laughed him for they were seeing a lanky and crippled man joining the Army. Steve was very uncomfortable being ridiculed by anyone and thinking to quit the Army.
In the evening, he was about to return to his quarters after some tiresome day at the training field. Just then, he noticed Dr. Erskine finished talking with some of the higher-ups.
The SSR scientist smiled at him and greeted, " Mr. Rogers, how was your day? "
" Just fine, Doc… " Steve answered, giving him a false smile to cover his complete disappointment.
" Just fine, is that all that you can say? " he asked.
The blonde crippled man heavily sighed and bowed his head. Erskine was waiting for him to respond and giving him a curiously look.
" Mr. Rogers? "
" Look, I don't think this is a good idea, " he admitted. " I joined the Army for some desk jobs and found it good to stay here. But when the Colonel asked me to do some training exercises, I couldn't believe this is the right thing to do. "
" Why is that? "
" Dr. Erskine, I am born crippled. I have regretted joining the Army. At first, I got interested just to earn a living, but I ended up being harassed and stressed out on these things I have never done before! Sorry, this is too much for me! I'd better prepare for my resignation. "
" Mr. Rogers, you just spent six months in service. You haven't got the clear picture of it. "
" Six months of experiencing blessing and calvary, " he sadly sighed. " I just don't know if I could stay here any longer. Besides, I don't want to end up like my father. Honestly, I have felt like I am a total failure and a liability for serving the country. "
Dr. Erskine understood the young man's words and felt sorry for him. For Steve, it was his greatest mistake in joining the US Army since he just recently realized he was truly incapable for going on battle due to his lifelong disability. The SSR scientist gently patted the young blonde man's back.
" I have understood of your disappointment and I am sorry for letting you into those troubles, " Erskine calmly spoke. " But I have some plans for you, Mr. Rogers. "
" Plans?! What are you talking about?! " Steve raised his voice in disbelief and loudly laughed. " Look, Doc. This is really ridiculous. You want me to stay in the Army?! Don't you even realize I am quitting because I am a total misfit?! Come on, Doc. You gotta be kidding me! "
Erskine heavily sighed and handed him a file folder from the table. Steve ceased laughing and received it. He was intently reading the file, skimming the details, and inspecting the images of that certain document. Then, he turned to the scientist after he finished reading it.
" What is this? " he asked.
" SSR Super Soldier Project, " the elderly scientist seriously answered and crossed his arms.
" Why did you have to let me show and read this thing? "
" Because you are chosen to be a test subject. "
Steve remained silent and dumbfounded, widening his eyes in shock. He couldn't believe in what he had heard from the SSR scientist. Somehow, that document could lead him to a different path.
" Why me? There are a lot of guys who deserve to be one?! Seriously, it can't be me! "
" Mr. Rogers, we have noticed your true dedication at work and training for six months, " Erskine replied. " I spoke to the Colonel and the other superiors for this one. They agree to have you as the first US Army personnel to be a recipient. Besides, you have told me before you never wanted bullies, right? "
" Look, I don't think this is right, " Steve returned to the document folder. " I don't know if I can't accept this. "
" Take it as a promotion, " he smiled back and left the folder to the young crippled man. " I will give you time to consider this. Goodnight! "
Steve remained more silent than ever and held the SSR document folder. He felt more compelled than ever and returned to his room.
The next day, Steve returned to the office since he requested his supervising officer to work in the administrative tasks instead of attending the herculean tasks of military training. He spent working his fingers in the typewriter and composing another document like he has been doing in the first few months in the US Army.
Being focused at his duty, he never noticed someone entering the office. Steve curiously eyed on the person which happened to be a lovely curly brunette woman with blue eyes. She was wearing an SSR uniform and smiling at him. The young man became infatuated to see her and felt his heart racing and pounding very quickly.
" Steve Rogers, " she called the office clerk's name with her smooth English accent.
" Excuse me, miss? " he curiously raised his voice. " Did the Colonel permit you to stay here in office hours? "
" Yes, we need to talk. So, pause yourself from paperwork. "
Steve ceased working and looked suspicious at the woman. Somehow, he didn't understand why she was here in the first place. He took his crutches and stood up.
" Miss? What is your purpose of your visit? You didn't mention your name. "
" Agent Peggy Carter, SSR, " she answered. " Dr. Erskine asks me to talk with you about the Super Soldier Project that you need to undergo. "
