Please take a moment to understand Light's situation. He was stuck in an uncomfortable hospital bed with countless wires attached to loud beeping machines stuck to his body; he was doped up with the highest level of morphine the hospital can legally give him and that doesn't take away from the fact that he, Light Lawliet, is trapped in a freaking hospital. He hates hospitals, absolutely despises them from the top of his head to the bottom of his toes and then some, he doesn't care about the extent of his injuries; he wants out and yet, his traitorous husband brought him here knowing full well that the first thing Light will do when he woke up would be demanding being released.
"Baby, please, you'll aggravate your injuries if you move," L pleaded with his husband, who blatantly ignored him as he tried to push himself up into a sitting position using his fractured and his broken arms.
"Like I care, Panda!" Light snapped.
"Babe please, you have six broken ribs, a fractured arm, a broken arm, and that's just the tip of the iceberg," L said as the nurse attempted to care their patient down.
"I know the damage done to me, husband. I was there," Light said, scowling at him.
"Then I shouldn't have to remind you yet here we are," L said, "Your clavicle has snapped, and your hip, ankle, left good and right leg have also sustained serious damage. You have a broken nose. We have no idea if you've got any substantial internal or head damage out than your ribs until the results come back. Baby, I know you hate the hospital and I promise once we know you are in the clear and Wammy's got the right equipment to monitor your health, then we'll be out of here."
Light stopped moving, turning his head to face his husband, "You swear."
"I swear on all the sugary sweets I love that I'm telling the truth," L said. Light seemed to think for a second before reluctantly laying back down. The nurse gave him an appreciated look, not that L cared, his husband's health is the utmost important thing to him which is why he's going against Light's wishes and bringing him to a hospital. The nurse quickly left after.
"How long will I be stuck in here?" Light asked.
"A week at mostly… only to make sure there's nothing seriously wrong with you. Light I know how much you hate this place and I promise, I will get you out of here sooner rather than later, but I need to make sure there are no hidden injuries we miss because we didn't take any precaution and discharged you without knowing the full list of your injuries. No, baby! Don't look at me like that Teru and Higuchi were torturing you for over a week, they've barely fed you so, I am not taking any chances with our health, you mean too much to me to lose you," L said grasping L's fractured arm and gently pulled it to his face before pressing a soft kiss to the palm.
"Panda," Light spoke softly, "You will not lose me, till death do us part, remember."
"This last week has been hell, I thought I'd never find you, I tried everything and then Mello, Matt and Near come here and in less than a day they find you. I failed you, I promised that I'd never let anything like this happen to you and even when you were taken, I couldn't find you," L muttered into Light's hand.
"L…" Light's heart grew heavy, "Baby, it's not your fault, I was careless, I didn't expect Merikh to find us, even after that article. I knew I should've stayed out of sight; I should've waited until after we caught Merikh before going home. This and everything that happened to me is all about me. Don't blame yourself, baby."
L gave Light a weak smile, "I'm not letting you out of my sight for the rest of our lives together. I don't care if you're going to the bathroom, I'm following you and if you try to escape me, I'll handcuff us together if I have to."
"I wouldn't have it any other way."
"I've been thinking" L started after sitting in silence for a while, the idea swirled inside his mind.
"That's dangerous," Light teased his husband but turned his head to look at him, showing that he has his attention.
"Mello and Near, I know, especially with Mello, they're not that much younger than us, but I was thinking… they already see us as… well… their parents. If we can…" L trailed off, but Light's smiling.
"You want to adopt them," Light said, and L nodded, "I'd like that. I'd really like that."
"We'll get Wammy to sort out the paperwork, that is, if they want us to adopt them. I'd put it at a 99% chance of Near wanting us, or at least you, to adopt him, with Mello. I'd only give it an 86% chance and…" Light put his hand over L's mouth.
"Panda, they will want it. I know my kids," Light said before letting out a yawn.
L smiled, taking Light's hand off his mouth and holding it in one hand whilst his other tangled in Light's hair, "Go to sleep baby, I'll be here when you wake."
Mello trudged behind Matt and Near as they walked down the hospital ward toward the room his mum was in. Near pushed the door open revealing their mother lying in the hospital bed, both his arms wrapped in white casts and from the odd bulges under the blanket so were one of his legs.
"Hey," his mum said, smiling, holding his cast hand out to the three of them. Near was at his side, climbing onto the bed and tucking himself into the small space on the bed. Mum smiled, wrapping his arm around Near's body and pressing a kiss to the top of his head.
"Come here," Mum said to Mello and Matt, nodding his head to the two empty chairs beside his bed.
"How are you feeling?" Mello asked, bringing the chair closer until his legs were pressed against the side of the bed.
"Like shit, but I'll be fine. You're the one who fought Merikh, are you alright? Did you hurt yourself, tell me no matter how minor the injury is?" Light said.
Mello stared at his mother in shock. "You were tortured!"
"It doesn't matter, you'll still be my baby!" Light argued back, "Near Mello and even Matt, if anything happened to you, I would be devastated, so please, for your old mum's sake, tell me."
"I'm fine, I promise. I got the jump on Merikh and ended the fight quickly, I promise," Mello said, putting his hands up in surrender.
"Do you have any updates with Merikh?" L asked suddenly, trying to change the conversation before Light tried to get out of his hospital bed and do a full search of Mello for any bruises, he may hide from them.
"Not much, S.W.A.T took them from B and me after the ambulance took you and mum away. We have taken them to the same facility as Amane and split up and are heavily restrained. The death note is currently locked up and hidden in a secondary location that only Watari and Matt know the location of. We haven't tried interrogating them until either you or mum said the word. We've come to a slight agreement with Merikh's Shinigami, it wanted to kill them as and I quote 'his entertainment was over and now everything is going to be boring', Matsuda has seemed to strike a deal with it we're not sure on what, but it's promised to leave Merikh alone so we can try them at court. We don't know why, but it seems to like Matsuda, so if he keeps the Shinigami entertained then nothing unexpected should happen to Merikh. That's it," Near explained.
"How's Matsuda done that? I mean I know he's smarter than he acts, he's definitely been put down many times at the start of his detective career, but to strike a deal with a Shinigami?" Mum asked looking at L, to Near, to them then back to Near.
"We don't really know the details, B does, he keeps grinning whenever he sees Matsuda or the Shinigami, but we suspect it has something to do with apples. We suddenly have a constant supply of them at headquarters," Mello said.
"Well, as long as nothing happens whilst I'm indisposed, then I'm grateful for him," Light said before looking over at L once more, the couple seemed to have a silent conversation between them before his mum turn to look at us once more, "Mello, Near, L and I have something we want to ask you".
"What is it?" Near asked, and Mello looked equally confused.
"We've been talking, and I want you to understand that you can say no if you don't want to, we'll understand if you do, but we were wondering whether you'd consent to L and I adopting you. We know that we're not that much older than you, especially with you Mello, but you've been like our children for well ever since Near came to Wammy's. Like I said I don't want you to feel pressured by anything, I don't want you to feel like you own us to say yes especially after…" Mello abruptly stood up cutting Light off, he scurried around to the other side of the bed before climbing on wrapping his arms around both his mum and his new brother as both he and Near shouted,
"YES!".
"Light, your mother and sister are here. Do you want to see them? If not, I can ask them to leave?" Watari said, pushing the hospital room door open. Light looked at his father-in-law for a few seconds before nodding his head, he doesn't want to seem like he's pulling away from his biological family after finally reuniting with his mother after all these years, he wants to meet and get to know his sister, he wants to surround himself with his family. Although his father can burn in the darkest depths of hell for all he cared, Wammy can easily take that father figure position in Light's life now. Wammy quickly disappeared, with his mother and sister following behind him.
"How are you? I know what you've been through, it's a terrible question to ask but still…" his mum trailed off.
"I'll be fine, I'm hooked up to a constant supply of morphine, so I'm not feeling any pain," Light said, trying to reassure his mother.
"I wish this hadn't happened, if only I walked you somewhere, then Merikh wouldn't have grabbed you," his mum said, and Light shook his head.
"Don't blame yourself. This isn't your fault. The only person at fault here is me, I knew there may be a risk to my safety after the arrest of the second Merikh, I didn't take any precautions, and I let my guard down. All this, all that happened to me, is all on me. I should've been more careful, so please, mum, don't blame yourself," he said. He knew the risks when he left headquarters, he's the only person to blame.
"Hi Light," Sayu whispered, "It's been a while."
"Yes, I'm sorry for leaving you behind Sayu," Light said, but his sister smiled.
"Don't be, you needed to get away, I know that now. What happened to you, it never happened to me, but he didn't come home that much so, he couldn't really try to when he did, I kept my distance from him, or he'd go straight to bed. It's not your fault for leaving, it's what's best for you? You needed to go and looking back on it, I'd been scared to see what would've happened to you had you stayed. I… I don't think you'd be alive to this day with how he treated you," Sayu said before continuing, "But the past doesn't matter now, all that does is you've come back to us and from the little, you told mum, you're happy now."
"I am Sayu, I'm happy. Mum, Sayu, this Panda looking man is my husband L, yes Sayu, that's really his name. And these blond- and white-haired boys using me as a pillow are my two children Mello and Near," Light introduced, resting his head on each boy's head as he said their names, "and the one playing video games is Matt, my future son-in-law, but currently Mello's boyfriend."
Slowly, Matt's and Mello's faces turned red. His mum smiled, she probably thought they looked a little odd and dysfunctional, but that's what made their family work well, but before she could say anything the hospital room door swung open and in storm Souichiro Yagami.
