Long, silver pigtails swayed gently in the breeze as Inukimi descended from the sky. As she descended, she reigned in her jaki, the power causing her hair to dance around her in streams. Golden eyes glanced behind her as her servants followed with their cargo; all of them carried sacks filled with precious metals and rare objects to be used on the shrine. It was strange to think that only a day and a half had gone by since she informed the council of the newly made kami. So much had happened, and the new goddess had been eager to be somewhere familiar. She couldn't blame her, it must have been overwhelming.
She touched down in the main courtyard and walked swiftly through the opened palace doors, the heavy wood groaning under the strain as the guards closed it behind her. She ignored their deep bows and made her way to Sesshomaru's study, waving off her servants in the process. They knew where they would have to go, and any attempt on their part to steal the precious objects would be met with swift death.
As she walked silently down the halls, she uncoiled her jaki slightly and sent it ahead to find her son, annoyed when she didn't. She had expected him to take some time to himself after she told him of the kami's power, though not this long. The west was incredibly busy right now after all, and if she wasn't here then the building of the shrine would be delayed. She tsked in disappointment, stepping into the large study while ignoring the imp who followed her in.
"Lady mother!" His high voice was scratchy and if Inukimi was a lesser being, she would have flinched. Instead she opted to pin him down with a cold glare as she made her way around the heavy mahogany desk, taking a seat in Sesshomaru's luscious burgundy chair.
"The next words out of your mouth better be interesting to this one." She was in no mood to listen to Jaken flounder about and make a fool of himself.
"Y-y-y-yes Inukimi-sama! A m-messenger arrived late at night, he held news of the g-general! And l-lord Sesshomaru has yet to return!" He squawked out in a rush, his complexion pale. Inukimi narrowed her eyes on him and held her hand out, pleased when he wasted no time in giving her the scroll. With a swipe of her red claw she tore the twine holding it closed and unrolled the scroll. Her eyes narrowed further as she read Kuro's warning, it seemed that the new kami was at risk if he thought there was a chance she was being hunted.
"What time did this arrive?" Her cold voice snapped Jaken out of his mesmerized idolization of her before he spoke.
"Sunrise milady!"
"Hn" the heart of the west was around six hours from Edo for a regular demon. Kuro must have learned of this late at night when the moon was high. She rolled the scroll back up as she thought. If there was immediate danger he would have returned to the west, the fact that he was not here indicated that he didn't see it as much of a problem. "Inform this one of the shrine's progress."
Jaken hid his arms in his sleeves as he began to recite to her all the doings of the day. "Councilman Iwamura has been most eager to lead the project, though he has never been interested in prayer, he has ordered it to be made of dark woods and white stone. Though, he wishes the roof tiles to be plated in gold as well as the fences and seams of the wall! He is mad! No kami could be wort-"
"Jaken," she cut the imp off, her eyes impassive as she looked at him down her dainty nose. "Are you implying that this one is wrong in her assumptions that the kami must be honored?" She hid a smile behind her sleeve, enjoying watching the imp flounder as he tried to fix his mistake. Even he didn't know who the shrine was being built for and she preferred it that way. Though it was unfortunate that her entire slew of servants knew of the new kami, she knew they were loyal.
"N-n-n-n-n-no Inukimi-sama! Forgive this lowly servant for his impudence!" He flew to the floor, tears leaking from his eyes as he repeatedly bowed. A sharp rap at the door had her turning her attention from him in an instant.
"Enter," Her voice was smooth and she forced herself to relax in the chair. Something felt off. The wooden doors were flung open and Gentaro walked in panting, his chest heaving. Sweat lined his brow and he immediately kneeled before her as he began to control his breathing.
"Speak," she ordered, tightening her jaw. She knew he had gone with Kuro, and he was far faster than the other messenger had been. Even still he must have made haste to be so out of breath.
"There was a storm and the lightning was following our trail," he inhaled deeply and forced it out slowly. "There were beings made from shadows beginning to follow. General Kuro requested Tenseiga."
Inukimi felt her breath freeze for a moment before she discarded the thought. If Kagome was dead, then Kuro would know that even Tenseiga couldn't bring the goddess back. She studied him for a moment, taking note of the red tail that peeked out from under his sleeve. "Jaken, leave."
A moment later the imp was gone and she motioned for Gentaro to bring her the kit. He seemed surprised for a moment before quickly hiding it and uncurling Shippo from his sleeve. The red-haired kit was shaking, and his eyes were wide as he looked around. Gold met emerald green and the kit launched himself at her, Inukimi caught him easily. The gesture was unexpected, but she figured helping to save his mother's life counted for something. She stroked his red hair as he buried himself in her mokomoko and began to speak.
"What do you know?" She pinned the black haired inuyokai with a glare and his blue eyes widened in surprise. That alone was enough, but even so his next words confirmed it.
"She- she is a kami."
Inukimi looked away from him and she trailed her gaze out the window, the high sun making the shadows of the trees short. "You're dismissed, this one shall send for the lord of the castle."
He seemed hesitant to accept her answer but nodded anyways. "As you say, my lady." He bowed and his silky black ponytail fell down his front.
"Oh and Gentaro," she flicked her golden eyes back to him. "If any else are to know of this, besides you and your few men, kill them." The threat was clear. If he spoke a word, he would be condemning his men to death. Not only that though, for she was sure she would have a fun time torturing the dog if he dared to even think of betrayal.
"Of course, my lady." He bowed once more and left, closing the door behind him quietly. Inukimi sighed as she gazed outside once more, thinking about intolerable pups and the stirrings of the world. With a glance down she rumbled low in her chest, making the kit fall into slumber as she continued to stroke his hair. Once he was asleep, she pulled out a simple round mirror from the folds of her kimono and poured her jaki into it. The glass distorted and swirled as she brought up the image of Kuro and Kagome.
The young goddess was asleep on a fireneko, the demon slayer she used to travel with holding her steady as they raced through the brush. Kuro was flanking them and she could see the spark of vigilance in his eyes. She almost snorted in amusement as she watched the monk try to concentrate from atop Kuro's back. His eyes were closed and he held his right hand in front of him, a sutra between his fingers. Her lips turned down in a frown, scanning their surroundings. As funny as their position was, Inukimi knew it was for a tactical advantage. Anyone would have a hard time trying to beat a yokai and monk working together. The slayer was also a great asset. Regardless of the danger they thought themselves in, she knew they would be safe.
With another tug of her jaki, she forced the image to change and was momentarily surprised to see the elder demon tree. Laying against one of his roots, Sesshomaru sat with his eyes closed. He opened them slowly, his gaze drifting across the sky until it met her own though the mirror.
"Why do you possess such a wretched thing" his tone held ice as he stared right at her though the mirror.
"The void demon was useful; this one does give up on useful things" she responded with an air of indifference as she gazed at him. His silver hair blew gently in the breeze as the elder tree demon began to awaken, stirring his jaki from its slumber.
"Kuro is in need of Tenseiga," she barely finished the sentence before he was gone. She hadn't planned on informing him that the former miko was well, instead she wanted to gauge his reaction. It spoke volumes, and she couldn't help the pang of disappointment that went though her heart. He was too late, now it was she that was out of reach. She had seen the quiet conversations those two had before, but she was sure neither were aware of the feelings they held. A sad smile tugged at her lips as she clenched her hand around the mirror.
"He is troubled," the heavy voice filtered through the image and Inukimi glanced at the old friend of her love.
"So he is." With a grip on her jaki, she shoved her power away from the greedy mirror and cut the image off. That demon was far too insightful for his own good. Some things were better left unsaid.
TBTW
The golden light of the evening sun filtered through her eyelids as she groaned. The pounding in her head had decreased significantly and she was thankful that it didn't hurt nearly as much.
"Kagome?" A soft voice spoke behind her and she pushed her face further into the warm fur.
"Five more minutes" she yawned and wrapped her hands around the warm heat of the body under her. Kagome froze and her bright blue eyes popped open, taking in the blurry forest as they raced ahead.
"Kirara?" she glanced behind her. "Sango!" She chirped excitedly, trying to sit up.
"Easy there Kagome, you need your rest." Her sister's worried voice fluttered you from behind her and Kagome grimaced. She had passed out. She felt Sango's warm, yet firm hand press her back down against Kirara and she let herself be led. The pounding of her head begging her not to argue.
"We are almost at the western palace," Sango paused and Kagome strained her ears to listen. "We know."
Sango gave her hair a playful tug and Kagome felt her eyes water at the gesture. Not because it was painful, but because it was how Sango reprimanded her when she thought Kagome worried too much. That one gesture did wonders for her though. Sango knew, and she wasn't going to treat her any differently because of it.
"Thanks Sango," emotion caused her throat to close up and she felt gentle fingers run along her raven tresses.
"You always find trouble, don't you Kagome?"
A sheepish smile spread across her lips as she turned her head back to look at her sister through the corner of her eye. "Whoops?"
A barking laugh sounded to her right and she met Kuro's gaze as he yipped. She was surprised to see Miroku atop of him.
I am inclined to side with the slayer.
Kuro's thought trickled into her mind and she rolled her eyes before her eyebrows furrowed in confusion. She found that she didn't feel overwhelmed by any of them, their thoughts were oddly muted and easy to push away.
Kuro seemed to sense this and he continued his thought. They have been warned, it helps that the monk is adept at teaching others on the value of a clear mind.
Ah, that made sense. She nodded, the soft fur of Kirara tickling her face. "Thanks guys."
Miroku opened his eyes and his warm purple orbs smiled at her from atop Kuro. "Of course, lady Kagome."
She rolled her eyes and despaired. Now she was never going to get Miroku to just call her Kagome. She felt Kirara flow her flight just as Kuro slowed his pace. A snarl lined his lips and he motioned for Miroku to dismount. As soon as he did Kagome felt Kuro's jaki coil and snap around him before it engulfed him, leaving his humanoid form visible once it dispersed.
"The palace is up ahead, though it seems the southern lord has decided to pay a visit." His voice was hard and Kagome could her his annoyance.
"Is that bad?" The last she knew, the south was a good ally to the west.
"No, not by itself. But," he paused and his emerald green eyes roved her over as she sat up. "He will be able to see by any charms I make if he wanders too close. You must stay as far away from him as possible."
Right, Kuro's charms had limitations. As powerful as he was some had a power of sight. She knew the southern lord was a bear yokai, a strong burly man with aged eyes and a kind smile. Well, kind when he decided to show it. Kagome gasped and her eyes snapped back to Kuro. "Your charms!" she gasped, her guilt mounting. "I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to use my powers!" Another thought hit her like a ton of bricks and she froze. "Shippo!"
"He is safe." Kuro assured her, his eyes trailing back towards the heart of the west and she relaxed some. "As far as the charm goes, it was bound to happen, the lightning was fierce. The men who assisted us were my most trusted, they will stay quiet. But," he paused and glanced back at her, a wary smile lining his lips. "I do ask that you try to refrain doing anything at the palace. If my charm were to fall while you were there, your power will undoubtedly wash over the entire palace. We are fortunate that there were no others nearby when it last occurred."
Kagome nodded sheepishly, her black bangs covering her eyes as she bowed her head. "Ok, I promise, and thank you." Now that she was sure Shippo was safe, the reality of her situation told hold of her once more before she shoved the feeling aside.
Miroku shook his head and he gave her an easy smile. "Do you still have use of your miko powers, lady Kagome?" She looked at him and nodded, wondering where he was going.
"I believe a barrier would hold it back. It may not be perfect to cover your aura, but I believe it will do in a pinch." He made a good point and Kagome nearly slapped herself.
"Oh right!" A blush lined her cheeks as he smiled in amusement.
"I placed the charm back on you before we left, it seems humans have a hard time detecting your divinity." Kuro's voice cut through her embarrassment and she was thankful for the distraction. She glanced back at Sango who nodded in confirmation.
"I knew something was different, and when he showed you and unwrapped his jaki from around you, I knew you were different but I didn't know how. Miroku though knew, so I believe it has to do with the finer parts of detecting auras." Sango's voice was quiet as she studied her and Kagome met her brown eyes evenly.
"The others in the village also were none the wiser. I believe if we needed to hide you, human settlements would be best. It may be better if w-"
"No." Kuro's voice was hard as he cut Sango off, his green eyes pinning her. "The palace is the safest place for her, the southern lord will not notice anything and this one trusts Kagome-sama to be able to control her powers."
Kagome felt Sango stiffen behind her and she watched as her sister's temper flared. "I hope you're not implying what I think you are."
Kuro simply sniffed and turned his back to her. "You must have more faith."
Kagome stepped in, she had yet to see Kuro be so… serious. "Guys it's fine!" She waved her hands placidly, "besides, we are closer to the palace." She nodded to Sango, "and I know you're just watching out for me, Sango-chan." Sango relaxed slightly and Kagome beamed them a smile.
"Now, how should we go about doing this?" Just as she spoke an explosion of power erupted from behind her and Kagome found herself behind Kuro in an instant. He was crouched in front of her, his red hair dancing in the breeze as rocks dust were kicked up in the air around them. A growl erupted from his chest but it was gone as soon as it came. He stood instantly and bowed at the waist.
"My lord," his voice was clear of emotion and Kagome snapped her eyes up. From the cloud of dust, Sesshomaru emerged. His piercing golden eyes were narrow as he stared at her and Kagome detected slight annoyance. She cringed, and began to apologize.
"Sesshomaru, I'm sorry I didn't mean t-" she cut herself off, not really knowing why he was upset actually. He continued to stare at her and his tight expression relaxed slightly before he spoke.
"As you were." His deep baritone sent shivers down her spine and Kuro snapped up from his bow. "You needed the Tenseiga." Sesshomaru's eyes scanned her and she tilted her head in confusion.
"We did, the monk and slayer knew how to defeat our enemies, however." Kuro spoke stiffly, eyeing the tree line as he continued. "Secrecy is needed milord."
Sesshomaru didn't acknowledge him and instead turned away towards the palace. "Come."
Kagome found herself back atop Kirara and she giggled as Kuro patted her head. She felt the sparks of his jaki flutter down from his palm and smother her in more of his power.
"This will help it last longer, I must keep giving more power to the spell though, so do not stray far from me." She nodded in understanding as she watched Sesshomaru lead them back, his silver hair swaying from side to side.
"Oh Sesshomaru! My powers well, I don't mean to intrude but-"
"I am aware" Sesshomaru cut her off, his pace never changing. "Your rooms will be far from others until you are better able to control your powers."
She smiled in appreciation then realized he wouldn't be able to see. Either way she bowed her head towards him and a playful smile lined her lips. "This one thanks you, Sesshomaru-sama," she teased back in the same formal tone. This time his gait paused briefly before he continued on.
"You would choose now to use my proper title, when it is no longer relevant to you."
A pang went through her heart and a sad smile found it's way on her face. "Yeah, I guess." She felt Kirara pause and she looked back up, seeing that he turned back towards her slightly. His one visible golden eye softening briefly before he turned back and continued ahead.
"You always did as you pleased." His rich voice fluttered back to her and her blue eyes warmed to a sky blue, a gentle smile tugging at her lips. She continued to watch him as he led the ragtag group back to his palace.
Distracted as she was, she didn't notice the astonished look Kuro was giving them, nor Miroku's lecherous smile. Sango's shout of "Hentai!" snapped her out of her daze and she threw her head back and laughed, the sound coming out as a tinkling choir. Even though everything had changed, many things didn't and she was thankful for the mercy.
Their trip back was quiet, none of them wanted to disturb the peace that had formed around them and Kagome couldn't blame them. The sun was slowly edging closer to the horizon but evening was still about an hour away.
The tree tops of the forest loomed high and their tips were glowing a warm shade of yellow. Kagome realized she basically lost a full day, and she was none too happy about it. She had planned on working with her powers some, in hopes to control it better. It seemed that was no longer an option, unless she could manage to get away from the palace. It was either sneak off and practice or wait until her identity was revealed. She sighed.
"What is it, Kagome-sama?" Kuro's voice brought her out of her daze and she gave him a half hearted smile.
"Well I was planning on trying to practice my powers today, but I guess I won't be able to now. And," Kagome paused, catching black strands of hair and fitting it in between her thumb and forefinger. "And well it doesn't seem like any of that will be possible soon."
Kuro nodded in agreement, understanding her plight. "It is for the best Kagome-sama, though we will work on it vigorously after you are shown to the world. And need not hide for the sake of tradition." Kuro almost snorted at the last part, a playful gleam entering his eye. "Besides, lady Rin has told me much about you. It would be nice to get to know you even more."
Kagome felt a slight blush dust her cheeks, she hoped Rin didn't go out of her way to say too much. Speaking of, "Will we be able to see her?" She missed the young woman, and always enjoyed relaxing in the gardens with her.
"It is not my decision my lady."
"So long as no danger persists, she may do as she wishes." Kagome's blue eyes snapped to Sesshomaru and she beamed a smile. He had teased her that she always did what she wanted without permission, but now he was giving it.
"You have your answer, Kagome-sama." Kuro's amused voice filled her ears and he took a step closer to her, minding Kirara's stride. "I do believe we can surprise lady Rin with some mischief." His emerald green eyes twinkled as a devilish smirk rose on his lips.
Kagome laughed and nodded in delight. "That would please this one," she teased at him, a light gleaning in her eye. "But Kuro," she addressed him seriously, facing him as much as she could from atop Kirara. "Please, call me Kagome." And this time when she said it, she meant it. Kuro was indeed proving to be trustworthy for all he's done for her in such a short amount of time. She hoped they could be friends.
"I-" He hesitated, gazing into her deep, compassion filled blue eyes. Her lower lip pouted and Kuro could have sworn he saw mist sheen her eyes. "Okay okay!" He gave up, and Kagome's pleading look immediately vanished, being replaced with triumph. She spent far too much time around foxes it seemed.
"Lady Kagome." He spoke and hid a smile as her irritated orbs rounded on him. Their gazes remained locked for a moment as they traveled through the forest, though Kagome eventually let out a sigh.
"I suppose that will do for now, but mock my words!" She shoved a finger at him, her jaw clenching in determination. "I will get you to say it!"
Kuro chuckled and nodded at her, the red hair that framed his face tickling his cheeks. "As you say, my lady."
She huffed in frustration and swiftly turned her eyes back on the forest path. She was just barely able to see the top of a tipped roof.
"We are nearly there." Sesshomaru's flat voice trailed back to them and Kagome felt her belly twist in anticipation. She gasped suddenly, people knew her, how could they have forgotten!?
"Wait! Sesshomaru, won't people recognize me?" She bit her lip and watched as he shook his head.
"No, Kuro is able to change people's appearance as well as aura. He was prepared." The white haired daiyokai nodded towards the general, and when Kagome followed his gaze, she was surprised to see that Kuro held a necklace out for her.
"These are pearls, each filled with my power, though only four are for a different charm," Kuro paused and pointed at the four white pearls that glowed a soft green. "Protection, your image, your aura, and your scent. Each pearl will grant you a new one. It is far stronger than just my charm on you alone since it has been given something to draw off of." Kuro placed the beads over her head, and besides the tickling of his jaki, she didn't feel any different.
"Why would you wait so long?" Sango's voice made her jump, she had nearly forgotten she was there. Still, she had a point.
"They were unfinished, but I knew Kagome-sama would eventually return to the palace, so I made this the night we stayed at Edo, finishing it at your village." He turned to face her again and continued.
"Though I will keep my regular charm over you active, if it were to break then the risk of your secret being exposed will be minimized. Think of the necklace as a fail safe." Kuro tapped one of the pearls with a clawed hand and she could feel the little zap of yokai that it sucked in. She looked up from admiring the charmed pearls and her eyes met Miroku's curious gaze.
"What?"
He tilted his head to the side and frowned, "I can see that you're different but I can still tell it's you"
Kuro nodded beside her and spoke to Miroku, "Only those who witnessed it be placed on can see it is her." The general smirked, "awfully convenient no?" He took the monk's bewildered expression as a yes.
"Foxes have their uses," Sesshomaru had watched the proceedings with impassive eyes. He turned back to the castle and began his even pace once more. Without another word, they followed behind silently.
Kagome wondered if Shippo would be able to make such amazing things, she wanted him to be able to train his powers. She knew he could transform into people and use his fox fire, but that didn't come anywhere close to what Kuro had just done. She could understand why the general was held in such high regard now, his skills relied on cunning and precision, both of which seemed to be honed to a fine degree.
"So what do I look like?" Kagome swept her gaze back over to Miroku and she saw him furrow his brows.
"You're bright still, but it's more subdued in a way. Your nose is sharper, and your eyes are green." Miroku tilted his head. "You could be a long off cousin, but one who happened to be a water spirit."
Ah right, she had nearly forgotten that she was supposed to be a water spirit, instead she was focused on what she looked like more. "Should I act any differently?" As far as she knew, costumes only went so far to help, the bad acters of her time proved it.
"I do not believe you will need to change much, your hour-long bath this morning actually helped me decide what to disguise you as." Kuro gave her a fanged smirk, his eyes bright in amusement. Kagome didn't have time to defend herself, Sesshomaru's voice cutting her retort off.
"We approach the hearing range of the guards."
Kagome stuck her tongue out at Kuro, and he gave her one last smile before he straightened and his entire demeanor changed. He stood tall and his brows fell heavy on his face, giving him an air of indifference. His jaw was still relaxed and his lips formed a tight line. His eyes still held the flash of mischief, but it seemed more subdued that ever. Kagome had gotten along with Kuro so well, it was like they had known each other forever. She nearly forgot that he was indeed supposed to be a powerful fox general and not a wild, mischievous kitsune.
She looked away from him when she felt the warmth of the sun on her skin, it glowed a luminous blue now and Kagome smiled. Blue reminded her of home, of her mother. The light from the sun reflected orange off of her, and her skin tone went a soft shade of purple from the reflection of the dancing lights around her. Glancing back at her sister, she smiled reassuringly, knowing the slayer was probably nervous to enter a castle full of demons. Miroku looked calm where he walked to her left, near Kuro, but Kagome knew better. Though he wasn't nervous as Sango was, she knew he must have felt some anxiety. She certainly had when she first started to visit.
Up ahead, large looming walls towered as high as the trees, the forest around them stripped away to prevent anyone from simply jumping in. The gray stone of the walls were complemented nicely with the dark oak that framed the edges and made up the massive gate. The gates themselves were simple, just a thick wooden block with the mark of the west etched in the middle. On either side stood guards, one of them letting out a whistle and the gate began to open immediately. It groaned under the pressure but the strong wood did not break.
The two guards on either side were adorned in black armor, their navy blue uniform slipping from underneath it. The helmets that hid their features were plain and a lighter shade of gray. They bowed their heads towards Sesshomaru as he approached, his pace never faltering. After Sesshomaru passed through they raised their heads again and Kagome met the eye of the one on the right, his purple orbs striking. It was all she could see past the helmet and she gave him a small smile as she passed.
"Kirara, thank you, but I think I can walk from here." She truly felt bad that she had made the fireneko hold her all this way, she must have been tired. Kuro gave her his arm and Kagome was thankful as she held it and dismounted. A soft mew from Kirara had her turning back in surprise.
Of course, Kagome.
She held in her excitement as she realized she was able to understand the fireneko. Sango was going to love this. Kuro adjusted his grip and made her keep her hand on his arm as he led them behind Sesshomaru.
Though she had seen the palace numerous times, it was always a breathtaking sight. But this time, not so much. As soon as they entered, she was assaulted with the sounds of chipping stone and the chopping of wood. Directly ahead of them, a large square space was cleared out and hundreds of yokai were grinding away at their work. A few being replaced by others in what she assumed was their shift. She blinked, suddenly realizing what was being built and held back a heaving sigh. Inukimi had said it would be the first thing they saw when they entered, a sign of their humility, but she hadn't taken the demoness seriously.
Now though, she saw the error of that assumption. They followed Sesshomaru as he walked around the construction, and Kagome was not unaware of the silent whispers that were being shared with their eyes. The demons wouldn't dare speak a word about them with the lord of the palace nearby, but Kagome knew their gazes lingered on Kuro's hand that helped keep her steady. She just hoped they wouldn't take it the wrong way.
To her right, she could see Sango scanning their surroundings with slight surprise. Her brown eyes darted this way and that, keeping Kirara close to her side as she strode protectively beside her. Miroku was on her left, his gait calm and a pleasant smile on his face. Even with his relaxed demeanor she knew he was hyper aware of their surroundings. She felt his aura brush up against her slightly before swirling around and searching for mal intent. As he walked, his staff held an extra jingle, a warning to those that thought to harm them, reminding them that he was able to bring the biting pain of purity to his fingertips. The air of peace he held was contorted to Kagome, for she knew he would use his powers without a second thought in order to do what he believed was just.
Not that she thought any less of him for it of course. It was simply that she now knew the monk too well to be fooled by his pacifying actions. She slid her eyes to Kuro and wondered if he was able to tell the same. Kuro was after all a daiyokai. Not as powerful as Sesshomaru of course, but still powerful nonetheless.
Just as they passed through the grand doors, Kagome felt a chilled draft waft down the hall and she shivered. She had never felt something like that in the western palace, nor did she think she ever would. It had an unearthly air to it, speaking of mysteries of another life. Before she could focus her aura on it though, the slapping of webbed feet down the hall alerted her to their dwindling peace.
"Son, dear." Inukimi materialized from a side door, her appearance perfect in every manner of the word. "Come." Her eyes snapped to Kagome, and a twinkle entered them as she looked between her and Kuro.
Could she tell it was her? Kagome wondered as she followed behind silently, never once leaving Kuro's steady hold. Jacken's shouting for them to wait was ignored as he continued to race after them.
The demoness led the group down another hall past the door she came from and made winding turns. Even with as much time as Kagome had spent here, she was still hopelessly lost. It would take three lifetimes for her to ever remember where everything was
They finally arrived at a mostly deserted hallway and Kagome grew curious. Up ahead, two massive double doors loomed. On either side, two guards stood at attention. They bowed their heads as Inukimi approached and stayed that way as they opened the heavy wooden doors outward. The doors were thick and carved with giant inu dancing around a glowing crescent moon. She didn't have much time to look over the rest of the details as Kuro led her through, hearing the doors close silently behind them.
They were led to a large table off to the side and Sesshomaru sat on a fluffy pillow at the head. Inukimi sat to his left and Kuro gestured for her to sit at Sesshomaru's right. She was hesitant at first, but the demoness raised a brow and she reluctantly sat down in one smooth motion, Kuro taking the seat right beside her. Sango sat to Inukimi's left and Miroku followed. Once they were settled the doors creaked open slightly and a timid maid brought in tea, serving each of them before she hastily bowed and left.
The steaming liquid felt warm around her hands as she gripped the cup and took a snip, noting that the others only did so after she. She frowned behind her cup but smoothed her face before placing it back down. Her head felt a little crowded with all the stray thoughts that were flying about, but it was manageable now that they were away from the busiest part of the palace.
Inukimi held up a dainty hand and with a yank of her jaki, a barrier was up. No sooner did she finish did Sesshomaru get to buisness.
"Report," Sesshomaru spoke just as he lifted the tea to his mouth, taking a long drag of the liquid as Kuro sat up straight beside her.
"We arrived at Edo near sundown where the elder miko of the village spoke with Kagome-sama to catch up. She has agreed to place a shine there as soon as the formal introduction is done." Kuro paused and tilted his head at Sesshomaru's 'Hn' of approval.
"I prepared my charm for her, but I was not able to finish it fully until we came upon the slayers village. Before then though, a storm was chasing us, and no matter the direction we turned it followed. The lightning also rode on our heels," Kuro hesitated a moment before he continued. "At first I thought it was trying to attack us but," he frowned, his orange eyebrows furrowing as his green eyes became distant in concentration. "I believe that is not the case."
Across the table Kagome could see Inukimi narrow her eyes slightly, the spark of curiosity igniting them. "Do tell then, what you think of it, general." Her smooth voice trailed to them and Kuro nodded briskly.
"I was unable to detect their presence, but I was able to see the beings when they came into short range. There were yurei, and the lightning was dissipating their forms before they could reach us. I believe that is why it struck so close." Kuro glanced over to her and Kagome could do nothing but stare. Yurei had been after them, and she had passed out and left herself as a burned to her guard. Guilt welled in her stomach and she looked down at her green tea, the leaves swirling slightly as she raised it to her lips.
"It is an interesting theory," Inukimi murmured from across the table, her eyes sharp on the black-haired goddess. Kagome figured she knew it was her, how was another question entirely.
"There is one more thing though," Kuro began, his eyes flicking over to Miroku. "Even the lightning was not able to destroy the beings, only scatter their essence. The monk though, was able to purify them, allowing the taija and I to defeat them in his presence."
Miroku nodded and took a small sip of his tea, "yes, they are corrupted souls that have died in horrible ways. Though, they are still spirits able to be cleansed. I projected my aura outward to a certain degree, focusing it on your weapons so that they may become holy and purify them. Unfortunately, it leaves me in a vulnerable state, unable to use the majority of my power to defend myself."
Kagome blinked and tried to wrap her head around everything that happened, her memories up until she passed out were slightly blurry, but she could remember the lightning well.
"It appears that the newly made kami is indeed being hunted. But by whom we have yet to know." A gloom entered the room from Inukimi's words. "But" she continued, "it seems that she is also being helped. Lightning does not act in such a way after all." The mood lifted some and Kagome furrowed her brows as she tried to organize her thoughts. The rest of the group fell silent as well.
A thought struck her, and she turned to Kuro, tilting her head in confusion. "Why did you not bring us to the cave Kuro? I figured it would have been easier to defend?" She did not assume her battle tactics were better and instead decided to ask the question nagging at her mind. Green eyes swung to her and Kuro's face grew concerned.
"Lady Kagome, there was no cave. You must be mistaken?" He studied her for a moment and Kagome was surprised to hear such.
She was sure she had seen a cave. "Your men, one of them called for a clearing but I thought he was mistaken at the time. It was definitely a cave, no?" She was growing slightly worried for she knew her memory did not deceive her.
"Interesting" Sesshomaru was gazing down at her and Kagome frowned.
"You believe me, don't you? I know what I saw." She didn't care if she sounded crazy, she was sure she was right.
"This one believes you; it is more a matter as to why you were the only one who could see it." She felt her face go pale, wondering what possible connection it could have held.
"Kagome-sama," Kagome didn't bother to correct him and turned back to Kuro.
"You told me you heard drums, yes?" She gasped, she had almost forgotten.
"You're right, I did. Each time…" Blue eyes glazed over as she searched her memory. "Each time there was thunder, until the thunder continued without stopping. There was a drum, it was like it came from everywhere." She focused back on the group and noticed that Miroku was staring at her intently, his eyes wide.
"Are you sure lady Kagome?" He whispered, his face paling. She swallowed but nodded, nonetheless.
"I'm positive."
He sat back heavily on his haunches and closed his eyes. Everyone was silent as they waited for him to collect his thoughts. "There are several Kami associated with storms, for it is only they who could have controlled one with such ferociousness."
Something clicked in Kagome's mind and she felt her eyes widen. She had thought the drums were familiar.
"It could have only been either...," he hesitated and met her eyes. "Raijin, or Susanoo."
The ringing in her ears grew as the silence of the room became unbearable, they didn't even breathe. One was wild, the other was terrifying.
"I do believe though, that it was Raijin-kami that was the cause of that storm." Kagome was inclined to agree with him. She remembered now why the drums and thunder should have sounded familiar. Her grandfather had often talked about the stories of the kami and how their domains worked. Kagome tilted her lips in a sad smile, oh her grandfather would have had a heart attack if he knew of her predicament.
"I think you're right; I remember my grandfather speaking of the legends." Miroku nodded at her confirmation and turned to face the rest of them.
"No matter the case, Sango and I will stay and help protect Kagome."
"Miroku!" She chided, about to argue further.
"No Kagome, you cannot deter us from this." To her surprise, Sango nodded sharply beside him. "Our family is important to us. Our daughters will be safe, but my dear sister-in-law would not be. I will not change my mind on this."
She met Sango's eyes desperately, pleading for her to argue with Miroku. But to her surprise, Sango's eyes were hard in determination.
"He's right. The village will protect our daughters with their lives, but something dangerous is after you Kagome, and you can't expect me to ignore the well-being of my sister." Her words hit home, and Kagome felt her eyes mist, Sango and Miroku were the only family she had in this era, and she knew she herself would argue tooth and nail to see to their safety.
"It is settled then" Inukimi stood and strode towards the door, glancing over her shoulder to her son. "Keep a barrier up until I ward her room." Sesshomaru nodded once and Inukimi left through the wooden doors, her fine kimono and furs trailing behind.
Sesshomaru tilted his head towards Sango and Miroku, indicating for them to get ready. "Kuro will lead you to your rooms, they shall be next to the miko's." Sango blinked at the title that Sesshomaru used but her purple clad friend didn't bat an eye.
"Thank you for your generosity," he bowed at the waist from his seated position and led Sango towards the doors, Kuro following closely behind.
Kagome brought her tea to her lips and grimaced at the cold liquid, setting it back down before she trailed her gaze towards the open window on the far wall. It was dusk out, and the shadows were beginning to creep longer and longer along the floor.
"Your kit is permitted to stay with you in your rooms, Kuro will remain guard. I shall assign another to relieve him though the nights." she nodded numbly; her eyes distant as she thought about the looming danger.
"Are you ever afraid, Sesshomaru?" She didn't look at him, instead keeping her gaze firmly fixed on the outer wall of the palace. It was a while before he answered, and Kagome almost thought he wouldn't.
"Once." Her gaze snapped to him, but he was already standing and striding towards his desk.
"You will be safe."
Kagome gave him a tight smile. "Yes, I'm sure." She gazed back at the window, the stars were beginning to show. The glow of her skin became brighter as the minutes ticked by, growing in intensity now that the sun was no longer its competitor.
She glanced at Sesshomaru and found him studying her, his golden gaze intense. She felt a slow blush tint her cheeks and nearly jumped when there was a knock on the door.
"I have returned for the lady." Kagome noted how he didn't say her name and was thankful that he was such a cunning fox. She herself had nearly forgotten her disguise. Kagome stood and she felt her black hair tumble down to her thighs, the soft blue glow of her disguise flickering slightly.
"Thank you for everything, Sesshomaru," she gave him a tender smile and clutched her hands at her waist. She turned to the door and just as she passed the threshold, she heard him reply.
"Goodnight, onna."
