Sesshomaru sighed internally as he glanced at the now nervous Kagome. It did not go unnoticed by him that his mother left them alone purposefully, though even he was unaware as to how she knew what had occurred earlier in the morning. The miko was shifting her weight from knee to knee, her dainty hands twirling a lock of onyx hair this way and that. The black waves contrasted starkly against her gold miko garments, and the few beams of light that shone on them made sparkles dance across the room.

"This one's mother meddles," he glanced at her, waiting for her to look at him. He narrowed his eyes as she purposefully avoided his gaze. She sat and fiddled with her sleeve, her emotions in turmoil. He understood her now, far more than when she had first ventured into his lands. Still, he needed to make sure there were no misunderstandings between them. "Look at me, miko."

Hesitantly, Kagome glanced at him, her bright blue eyes swimming with worry and apprehension.

"Sorry!" Her cheeks tinted pink as she sputtered, "you know for…" Kagome swallowed and looked away from him, her cheeks reddening further. "Kuro told me it was different for inu, I had the intentions of a fox." She fiddled with her thumbs and looked down at her lap.

Sesshomaru would have laughed if he had any less control. Instead, he opted for shaking his head and giving her a quick tilt of his lips. She froze momentarily, then relaxed completely. A small smile making it's way on to her own face. He paused at that briefly, wondering is his own ease at the situation comforted her that much.

"This one was aware of your intentions. Unfortunately, my instincts were…" Sesshomaru paused and searched for the words, only somewhat distracted by the surprise he saw on the miko's face. "They were disturbed." It was not the first word he would use, but the language of his kind was complex enough that the meaning would have been lost in translation regardless.

Slowly, a wide smile beamed across Kagome's face, the sunlight that streaked thought the open window making her glow in an unearthly way. Her luminous skin only added to the picture she made. Sesshomaru drank her in, his mind supplying a correction. She was unearthly.

"Thank you, Sesshomaru." She gazed at him with warmth in her blue eyes.

He blinked and remained silent, unsure why the miko was thanking him. A chiming laugh escaped her and she reached for his hand, palm up. Another fox trait. Her exposed wrist was an offering of trust and Sesshomaru saw no need to deny her. Gently, he scraped his claws over the visible veins before pulling back, ignoring the tingle that went up his arm at the brief contact. He wrote the feeling off, he hardly touched anyone anymore, it was a simple side effect.

"Thank you, Sesshomaru, for trusting me." Kagome smiled and took her wrist back, now more at ease. Sesshomaru said nothing, instead letting her come to her own conclusions. At the very least, the nervous air she held around her previously had vanished.

He looked off to the side and quietly thanked the miko when she poured him more tea. They sat in comfortable silence and he slowly started to get the suspicion that there was more on her mind. He glanced at her from the corner of his eye and found her lost in thought, her eyebrows furrowed as she bore a hole into the low table. The loose strands of hair that framed her face demanded his attention as a cool breeze blew in.

"What is it that troubles you?" He tore his gaze away from her hair and found her blinking up at him, searching his golden eyes.

"I-" she hesitated and he gave her a moment to compose herself. "Raijin mentioned something to me."

He raised a brow in question, "and you didn't bring this up earlier because?"

She rolled her eyes and huffed at him. "Kami I may be, but I'm not all-knowing." His lips twitched but he remained quiet and silently urged her to continue. She let out a sigh and stood, wandering over to the open window and looking up towards the sky. The rays of sun that hit her illuminated her form and cast the sequence of her clothes onto the wall, lighting the room up in a mass of color.

"Raiju said I was already told what to do, but I can't quite place my finger on what he meant." She looked back at him with furrowed brows, "I've been told so much these past few days, it could be anything!"

Sesshomaru remained quiet, contemplating all that had happened as well as the several conversations he had with his mother.

"Perhaps it was something this one's mother said? She is one of the few that know a great deal about the kami. Her father's lineage goes back several millennia, they were sure to witness some of the legends we hear of today."

Kagome leaned against the stone wall, her face scrunched in concentration, hands fidgeting. "I think you're onto something. Inukimi did tell me a lot… I just wish I could remember more."

"Perhaps it would have been something to do with you specifically rather than tales of others?" His eyes followed her hands as they froze in their ministrations.

Kagome gasped and spun around a smile lighting up her face. "Sesshomaru you're a genius!" He thought he kept his composure, but Kagome threw him a mocking glare. He wondered then, when had she begun to be able to tell his mood?

"Okay enough of that! But I think you're right! She told me… she mentioned how my body was made, I remember. Uhm," Kagome strode back over and plopped back down, taking a swift sip of hot tea.

"Body holding energy… don't over exert.." Kagome thought over the nagging feeling in the back of her head and mentally chased it with both hands extended.

"Oh!" Excited eyes rounded on Sesshomaru, "Your mother said something about my body being the only place my power is!"

Sesshomaru furrowed his brow and thought back to the tales his mother told him of the kami, the powers they gathered from creation and of the safeguards they kept. "Correct," Sesshomaru met her gaze and continued. "The kami do not have shrines for mere decoration," he quoted the story his mother told him as a pup. "They house the power of the gods that claim them."

Kagome nodded furiously, "I think that's it! It- it just feels right."

"In that case, you have already started. The shrine on this one's land is your main home thus far, " and he hoped she would keep it that way. Having a kami regularly visit his lands would do wonders for them, that was all. "Until you are finished claiming that land, your power will remain in you." Sesshomaru mentally nodded, assuring himself of what he said was true.

"Okay, I think," Kagome tilted her head to the side, eyes narrowing. "I think I'm almost done. Something is telling me to keep going, but not now, not while the sun is up. I wonder why?"

He shrugged slightly and brought the tea to his lips before continuing. "Perhaps it has to do with whom you hailed from?"

She shrugged in response, "Maybe."

The room grew quiet and the light dimmed as passing clouds covered the sun. Kagome's clothes dimmed and the dazzling display along the walls went with it. Her golden glow shimmered along her skin and her eyes were backlit blue. The cloud passed and she was once more bathed in sunlight.

"Kaede mentioned that she wanted to build a shrine for me." The sad smile that adorned her pink lips did something weird to Sesshomaru's chest and he stubbornly looked away.

"I think I will go there next, after I am done with my shrine here. Most kami have many, I think I will follow that route for now." Her voice trailed off as she lost herself in her thoughts.

He nodded, still looking away. "Very well, this one shall be there again tonight." His golden eyes glanced back at her in time to see her smile return.

She bowed her head respectfully, "this one thanks you, lord Sesshomaru," she hesitated before continuing. "For everything. If it weren't for you and your values, I would probably not be here today."

He immediately knew what she was referring to. The day he had found her lost and abandoned. She had a heart as broken as his own mother's had been the day his father abandoned her for another. He grit his teeth and clenched his fist under the table. Inuyasha had paid, yet his anger was still present.

"Anyways, I'm going to go talk to Sango, let her know the situation with my… dream walking as well as a possible trip back to Edo." She sighed before standing and sent him another smile.

"See you later, Sesshomaru."

When he was sure she was far enough away, he looked down and forced his claws out of his palm. Blood pooled in his hand before he forced his jaki to burn it away and heal his wound. Inuyasha mattered little now, the events of the past having taken place long ago by human standards. Yet to him, a demon, the time still seemed far too close. He growled in annoyance and tore his mind away from the topic, he had better things to do than think about his honorless half-brother.

TBTW

Kagome hummed in contentment as she made her way down the halls, following the energy of her blessing. It felt odd to feel some of her power connected to another, but at the same time she knew it was only a fraction of what she now held. Some part of her told her it was inert, unable to obey any others command but her own. Either way, it was not something she was worried about with this particular pair. Sango and Miroku would never betray her.

As she walked down the hall in her golden clothes, people moved out of her way and bowed low, some reaching out as if to touch her, though none ever did. Even with all the kindness she felt around her, Kagome couldn't help but notice those that held jealousy in their hearts. Even as they bowed and wished her well, she heard their thoughts of unfairness and mistrust. They were few and far between, but she knew better than to ignore them. Maybe at some point in her life she wouldn't have cared about what anyone thought, but soon after she left the village for her own journey did she realize that type of nativity put Shippo in danger. She closed their thoughts off the best she could, not wanting to become overwhelmed again. Whispers still slithered in here and there but it was far more manageable.

Kagome sighed as she came to a dead end and resigned herself to get help. Feel her power she may, but it didn't exactly give her proper directions. With a frustrated huff she spun on her heel and quickly rounded a corner and immediately headbutted into a poor maid. With a yelp, Kagome tripped over her feet and fell back on her butt, groaning in pain as she rubbed her forehead.

"Oomph"

Kagome looked up and saw a mass of blankets sprawled on the floor, a head of dark green hair emerging from the white linen.

"Hey! Watch where you're goi-" The voice cut off and Kagome met dark green eyes. The woman who they belonged to grew pale.

"Oh! Kami-sama please forgive me!" The green haired girl that had fallen over quickly got on her hands and knees, placing her head on the wooden floor as she continued to speak. "I did not mean to harm you! I-"

A sharp whistle cut the girl off and Kagome flinched at the noise. Her newly sensitive ears were quite offended.

"Torii! What do you think you're doing you lazy stray!"

Footsteps stomped down the hall and Kagome looked towards the noise as she slowly picked herself up off the floor. The linen was ruffled violently as the now named Torii struggled to stand, her eyes wide in panic. Kagome frowned at the treatment of the young maid and brought her hands to her lips, motioning for the woman to keep silent. Green eyes looked at her in confusion but the young woman nodded her understanding.

Quickly, she used a sheet as cover and dug into her pockets, looking for the charm Kuro had given her when she first entered the palace. She felt the pearl necklace and swiftly took it out to put it over her head. The golden glow of her power turned to a soft blue hue and Kagome heard the maid gasp when she stood and emerged from the sheet. She winked at her and offered her a hand to stand.

Just as Torii was about to reach for her, the nagging voice that came from down the hall shouted again, much closer this time.

"TORII"

A young demoness emerged from the dark hall, her eyes were a deep red and her face imitated fine porcelain. The woman's black hair was swept back into an elegant bun and her light blue kimono dragged along the floor. She was beautiful by all means, but the sneer on her face ruined the facade.

"Get up you wretch, now all these sheets have to be washed again!" Her voice was filled with distaste and ire.

Torii flinched from her place on the ground and nodded. Kagome watched as the young maid shakily withdrew her hand and hurriedly grabbed all the fabric she could carry.

"And you," Kagome looked up, startled to find those mean, deep red eyes on her. "Where's your head maid? Have you just decided to run amok and gossip?" The woman looked back at Torii with a glare and kicked her square on the back, making the poor girl fall forward on her face.

Kagome narrowed her eyes and took a step forward, "I suggest you stop that."

Red orbs widened before they narrowed in rage, the woman stepped towards Kagome menacingly. "I'll take it that you're new then. I'm not sure how it worked at your old place, but here we do things my way. Now I suggest you get on your knees and beg for forgiveness, I've had demons head for less." The woman glared at her with a scowl on her face and clenched fists at her side. Between them, Torii had gone completely still and wide-eyed from her spot on the floor.

Kagome's blood was boiling. It had been a long, long time since she had felt her belly fill with anger and her body flash with heat. Her intention was to disguise herself as a commoner so the girl wouldn't get in trouble, but that seemed like an impossible task with how vile this head maid was.

"Oh, beg for forgiveness you say?" Her voice came out scathing and Kagome rose to her full height. "Why should I when it seems you treat everyone so ruthlessly. Does lord Sesshomaru know of this?" If he did, Kagome would have his head.

The woman laughed tauntingly, "as if he cares about what happens to his servants. He's far too busy to care for the likes of any of you." The woman paused and took a step back. "Actually don't bother, I've decided you're useless here- Hey! Listen to me when I speak!"

Kagome ignored her and helped Torii to her feet before turning back and glaring at her with all the disapproval she could muster. "I'll give you the option to apologize to Torii" she gestured towards the frozen girl who stared at her.

A mocking laugh escaped the woman. "Make me" she sneered, bringing her face close.

Kagome smiled devilishly as she fought to contain her temper. "With pleasure." She reached for the necklace around her throat and the woman narrowed her eyes.

"Oh before I forget," Kagome stilled, necklace still clutched in her left hand as she spoke. "What's your name?"

"Matsura Ichi, daughter of lord Shibata" Matsura smiled hauntingly and tilted her head back so she could look down on her.

Kagome hummed in acknowledgment, glancing down the length of her decently made blue kimono and pretending to know who that was.

"Alright then."

She removed the pearl necklace in one swoop. Her power turned the halls a warm yellow and even her clothes that had been changed returned to their brilliant gold. She expanded her aura and watched as horror bled onto Matsura's face.

"K-kami-sama!" Matsura's red eyes widened to an impossibly large degree as she fell, her legs having given up on her. Now it was Kagome's turn to look down on her, and though she didn't necessarily enjoy being put above others, there were expectations to the rule.

"Listen well, I'll give you one gift. A give from the divine." Torii took a step back in shock and clutched at her simple brown kimono with balled fists. Matsura looked up from her place on the floor, mouth agape. "T-thank you kami-sama!"

Kagome gave Matsura her most pleasant smile. "Of course, it's an easy one that will show your worth." Kagome felt Torii's green eyes piercing her and Matsura's red ones grew weary. She stepped forward with two fingers extended out, "may others treat you as you have treated them."

A gasp left Matsura's painted lips as Kagome's fingers connected with her forehead. She let out a scream of pain and flinched away, holding her injured head.

"W-what did you do!?" The demoness clenched her teeth in agony, the mark burning fiercely.

Kagome smiled at her. "Like I said, it's a gift." She wasn't sure if it was her place to hand out her own version of justice, but Kagome found she could care less at the moment. The woman deserved a piece of her own medicine.

Matsura removed her hand and Kagome could see a golden circle form on her forehead.

"Now then, Torii was it?" She swung her eyes back to the paralyzed maid and gave her a gentle smile. "I'm sorry for running into you, let me help you get these things down to the wash?" She gestured towards the sheets and nodded encouragingly for her to speak.

"I-I.." Torii was at a loss for words. Her deep green eyes remained wide as she looked between her and her head maid withering on the floor.

"Y-you shouldn't kami-sama! It's beneath you." Torii looked at her feet and Kagome huffed in annoyance.

"No one said that to me when I was mortal!" Kagome bunched the sheets into her arms and grabbed Torii's hand in hers, causing the maid to stiffen. "Come, they won't clean themselves." She gave her a smile and Torii nodded wearily.

Just as Kagome bent down to look at the remaining mess on the ground she heard Torii's sharp intake of breath. Following her eyes, Kagome frowned and saw the struggling demoness on the floor. The golden circle that was etched onto her forehead had burned a deep red, one of rotten blood.

"Don't worry, she will be fine. I did not give her any ill intent, it is simply as I said. Her own actions have turned it to a curse." She met Torii's eyes and gave her a bitter smile. "Others will now treat her as she has done to them."

Slowly, the young demoness nodded and Kagome shoved the linen into her arms. "Now then, where to?" She said over her own arm of sheets.

"The way is down the hall, and near the courtyard by the maid's chambers." Kagome nodded and motioned for her to lead.

"I'll follow you, it'll be faster." Torii hesitated but with another reassuring smile she nodded and led the way.

As they both made their way down the hall, whispers started to spread. Kagome stubbornly ignored them as she focused on helping Torii with her task. Still, it was hard to ignore the gathering groups of maids as they watched them pass with wide eyes. Kagome felt the heat of the sun as they stepped out into the bustling court yard and breathed a sigh of relief.

"O-over here Kami-sama"

Her relief was short-lived. All noise stopped and Kagome felt even more eyes bore into her. Her stomach clenched but she tried to ignore the feeling and instead gave Torii a smile.

"Alright, here you are. Sorry for running into you again." She spoke as she placed the cloth down in front of another gaping maid.

Torii bowed deeply to her, her short green hair falling on either side of her face. "And I apologize for not being more vigilant. Thank you so much." Torri looked up at her and Kagome paused, quirking a brow.

"May I ask something kami-sama?"

She nodded, motioning for the girl to rise from her bow.

"You are the new kami, Kagome-kami yes?" Her voice was soft, as if she was worried she would offend her. She nodded and Torii continued on.

"May-" Torii paused and swallowed hard. "May I pray at your shrine?"

Kagome felt her heart soar at the request. "Why of course! It's certainly not off limits. I'm still kind of new, but I will see where I can help!" Her voice came out in a rush as excitement filled her.

A brilliant smile lit up Torii's face and she bowed once more. "Thank you Kagome-kami!"

Kagome nodded and waved goodbye, a bounce in her step as she made her way back into the palace. She hummed as she wandered down the halls, content with how the day had gone so far. She did feel bad about the head maid, but the gift she had given her could have just as well been a blessing.

"Lady Kagome!" Said woman spun around and waved happily as Kuro ran towards her from down the hall. He was there nearly instantly, it was just then that Kagome realized he was panting.

"Kuro are you ok?" She made to place a hand on his shoulder but he straightened quickly.

"I'm well my lady, but you..!" He trailed off and gripped his red hair in his hand. "Lady Kagome just what have you been up to? I was gone for an hour!"

She blinked owlishly and let out an ungraceful, "huh?"

Kuro took a deep breath and Kagome shifted her weight from toe to toe. "News travels fast here my lady, your escort should have known to-" he cut himself off and looked behind her.

Escort? Kagome gave him a sheepish grin. "Oh ah, I think I forgot about that bit." Guilt spread across her chest as she saw Kuro's face morph into worried exasperation.

The red haired kitsune was taking deep breaths, his eyes clenched shut as he pinched the bridge of his nose. "Lady Kagome," Kuro opened his green eyes and looked at her. "Lady Kagome, you must not wander around without one of my guards." He took another deep breath and let it out in a sigh.

"I am sure we are going to be hearing from lord Sesshomaru again." Kuro almost sounded resigned.

She furrowed her brows and placed a hand on her hip, her eyes glowing in defiance.

"But why, I didn't do anything wrong! I mean yeah I technically should have had a guard but-"

"And the head maid that you supposedly cursed?" he cut her off with a knowing look.

Kagome blinked. "Oh you guys already heard about that!?" He let out a groan of frustration and paced along the small hall.

"Demons, lady Kagome, have excellent hearing." he said tapping his pointed ears. "Not only that, we can travel far faster. And with the servants well, they travel all over the grounds quite quickly, as well as their tongues." Kuro was looking at her with furrowed brows, his arms folded across his armored chest.

Kagome huffed, tucking a strand of black hair behind her ear. "Even as a kami I manage to get into trouble," she grumbled.

His eyes softened, and a weary smile tilted the corner of his lips. "It would be hard to say you're in any kind of trouble lady Kagome, no one is above you here. We-" Kuro cut himself off briefly before continuing, pursing his lips in thought. "I would very much like to keep you safe Kagome-kami. At least until you are better prepared with your powers." Kuro motioned for her to walk with him and she did so, keeping her eyes on the hall ahead.

"I am aware that we have not known each other for long, but I feel as if we have the potential to be good friends."

Kagome smiled blindingly, her face lighting up in joy. "You think so too!?" She glanced at him from the corner of her eye and saw his stiff posture relax.

"I do, my lady, and as my friend, I'd like you to be more careful."

Kagome pursed her lips and contemplated his words, remembering what it was like when she was younger and untrained. It almost felt as if she was starting off from scratch yet again, but she had to remind herself of what Inukimi said. Besides, who knew what would happen to her if she got gravely injured? Would she even be able to be helped?

"Lady Kagome?" Kuro's voice snapped her out of her thoughts and she realized she had stopped walking.

"Oh! Sorry!" she hurried along and trailed after him, pushing those thoughts to the side. "Where's Shippo?"

"I dropped him off with the lady mother and lady Rin, he said something along the lines of you allowing 'play dates'?"

Kagome giggled and nodded, the word was funny coming out of Kuro's mouth. His angular face and strategic eyes almost managed to make the words menacing in a weird way.

"Kagome!" Sango's voice traveled from down the hall and she looked up in time to catch her wave. Miroku walked next to her, a fading handprint on his face.

Kuro quirked a brow at the monk, eyeing the spot that Sango slapped with a question in his eyes. Miroku shook his head and sent him a wink. Some things never changed. Kagome almost laughed as she rushed forward with a smile on her lips. "Guys! Perfect! I needed to talk to you."

Sango nodded in confirmation. "Jaken said you would."

Sesshomaru must have told him to inform them, Kagome mused. "Yep," she turned to Kuro and gave him her best smile. "Kuro, do you think we could go somewhere to talk in private?"

"Oh course my lady, this way." He motioned for them to follow and Kagome was happy to explore more of the palace. As they walked back in comfortable silence, she noticed how relaxed Kuro seemed. She smiled, happy that he could at least be more at ease in his own lands. When they were out and about in Edo, she had noticed how he tensed at the slightest things, ready to take action at a moment's notice. Though it was good to stay prepared, it wasn't exactly healthy to be so tense all the time. Kagome blinked as Kuro caught her by the arm and she realized too late that she had just about ran into him.

"Here, my lady." Kuro gestured for her to enter the room and Kagome tinted pink. "Sorry" she murmured and rushed inside. The room was small with a simple table and soft pillows for them to sit on.

Kagome frowned when she noticed that Kuro had stayed outside. "Kuro? Won't you come in?" She motioned towards one of the fluffy pillows next to her.

He shook his head, his slightly loose red hair framing his face handsomely. "No my lady, I will stand guard here." He paused, "should I...listen in?" he suggested.

Kagome hesitated but nodded. "Yeah, you'll need to know this too. I guess that's ok if you can hear from out there." For a moment she thought about why Kuro would want to distance himself from them, but she decided that couldn't possibly be the case. Especially not after the heartfelt conversation they just had.

Kuro straightened and his green eyes warmed as he looked down at her from his spot at the entrance. "I will stay here my lady, please, let me ensure your safety as well as privacy."

Her eyes widened in realization and she nodded. "Oh, right! Thank you, Kuro." She hadn't even thought about that. In all her time coming to the western fortress she never had a need to hide her plans, especially since they mainly consisted of new games to play with Rin. Kagome had nearly forgotten that with so many demons present, this place wasn't as private as she was used to. She felt slightly guilty at her earlier train of thoughts but sent Kuro a reassuring smile, telling him she understood.

He nodded back to her, his gaze warming. "Call if you are in need of me." With that he stepped back and slid the door shut, leaving her alone with her feudal family.

When she turned back Sango was watching her with a knowing smile and Kagome raised a finger to her lips. The effort was ruined when Miroku laughed outright. "Still making all kinds of friends I see."

She huffed, crossing her arms and tilting her head back in the arrogant way Sesshomaru was known for. "This Kagome knows not of what you speak of, monk."

Sango choked back a laugh and Miroku shook his head, a grin on his lips. "I beg your forgiveness oh great one." He dipped his head in a shallow bow and she couldn't hold back her giggles any longer. Outside, she heard something suspiciously like a cough but it only spurred on her own mirth. The atmosphere was cleared of any wariness and Kagome sat more comfortingly, sinking her weight against the table and holding her head up with her hand.

"Ever since you became a mom Sango, you've gotten far more perceptive. Do you have eyes on the back of your head yet?" Kagome pretended to peek around and look but Sango playfully batted her away from across the table.

"Those came before the kids, I had a monk to watch out for!" They shared another breathless laugh. Once everyone settled, Sano straightened and nodded towards her. "So Kagome, what is it that you wanted to talk about?"

With a lighter heart, she began spouting off hers and Sesshomaru's idea, talking well into the late afternoon.

TBTW

(earlier)

Rin waved goodbye to her father's trusted guard and spun around to hug Shippo. He squeaked and she loosened her hold, setting him down and giving him a toothy smile.

"Rin!" He shouted when he could breathe again, his green eyes excited. He motioned for her to stay quiet and he jumped on her shoulder, balancing himself before meeting her eyes. He spoke low and Rin had to strain to hear his words.

"Your grandmother wanted me to ask you something." she nodded for him to continue without looking. His mouth was close to her ear and Rin wondered what could be so secretive that he would speak so so low. "Do you think of Kagome as a mom?"

She leaned back and eyed him, hesitant and wondering if she would hurt her friends feelings if he knew the truth of the matter.

"It's ok, you can say it." He still spoke low but Rin didn't have to strain as hard to hear. She studied him for a moment, noting how he hadn't changed a day in the past six years. She searched his eyes and found only understanding as he waited patiently for her to reply.

Rin nodded slowly, her eyes refusing to meet his. "Sorry Shippo, I just-" she cut herself off, hoping that her friend wasn't mad at the possibility of her wanting Kagome to be her own mother. When she dared to look back at him he was smiling from ear to ear.

"It's ok Rin-Chan, no one can resist mama."

She let out a soft sigh of relief before pursing her lips in thought. "Why did you want to know?" It had been hard for Rin not to think about Kagome as a mom. Her visits over the past few years helped Ring grow to the young woman she had become. She absolutely adored Kagome, and everything the older woman had taught her was seared into her soul.

"Well, grandmother said that there might be a way"

Ring covered her mouth with a hand, stifling her gasp. She lifted Shippo from her shoulder and looked straight into his big, green eyes. "You must tell this Rin!"

Shippo waved his paws frantically and she brought her voice back down to an excited whisper. "How?" She pressed, bringing Shippo closer again so he could talk into her ear.

"Grandmother says," he paused and Rin felt his heart flutter in her grip. "She says your lord may like mother."

A wide grin split across her face and she couldn't help but squeak in excitement. She let Shippo grip her shoulder as she bounced eagerly on the tips of her toes. The jolts of energy in her system made her want to flail but she resisted the urge. Chiding herself that she was a young woman now and it wouldn't be right. Still, it didn't take away from any of her excitement.

"What do we do?"

He shrugged and Rin growled in frustration, making her brother's eyes go wide.

"Now, now Rin, what has your grandmother told you about growling?"

They both spun around and Rin launched herself at her grandmother, her brown eyes bright with anticipation.

"Honored grandmother!" She gave her a hug and Inukimi placed a dainty hand on her head, just like her lord. She glanced up and stilled at the red painted smile on the demoness's face.

"Come children, I do believe we have much to discuss." Inukimi turned with a flourish of silk, Rin and Shippo following behind excitedly.

TBTW

Shippo watched his mother as she started out of her window, lost in thought. They were once again at the shrine, waiting for the waning sun to set and allow his mother to continue to claim the land. Shippo knew the gifted land was a high honor, no daiyoukai would ever willingly give their land away. Sure they allowed for minor lords and farmers to settle, but in the end it was still their land. This was different he knew, and even at such a young age he could tell how much respect the lord of the western lands gave his mother.

Shippo grinned, his green eyes lighting up like jewels in the coming darkness. He always knew his mother was special, not because of where she came from or what she had become, but because she gave her full effort to others and always thought of them first. Maybe, just maybe the western lord has realized this over the years.

He frowned as he approached her, noticing the dimness in her eyes and the slight frown on her face. He was unused to seeing her so unhappy and it made something inside of him twist. Bounding forward, he gave a yip, knowing Kagome would catch him when he jumped.

"Shippo!" She laughed as she caught him, her eyes briefly flickering with joy before she settled him down in her lap. She smiled down at him gently, though it didn't quite reach her eyes. Shippo frowned, bringing his small paw up to pat her face.

"Are you okay mama? You seem sad lately."

Kagome stiffened briefly before relaxing. She closed her eyes and let a sad smile line her lips as she looked down at him.

"I just need time to adjust Shippo, a lot has happened in the past few days."

He nodded solemnly, remembering what Sango had told him when he asked about his mothers mood. He gave her a grin, rubbing his cheek against her, marking his scent to let others know not to trifle with his mother. Though he wasn't big enough to back up his actions, he hoped it would deter any mindless beasts from her. He had been doing it since they set out alone together across Japan all those years ago, trying to help her in his own way.

He thought back to the first time they went out on their own. Kagome had been nervous, but she had learned all she could from Kaede and was determined to visit others who could help her control her immense spiritual powers. He looked back up to his mother, who was once again looking at the setting sun. Her face was glowing in the warmth of the final rays and her eyes were far away. With each passing moment, he noticed her glow brightening, as if to chase away the darkness that was coming.

She had come such a long way, and Shippo had never been more proud of her. His mother, a warrior priestess, made kami. He was a lucky kit, and he was sure his parents were smiling down at him, at how blessed his life had become. Of course he could never forget his own parents, the ones he had spent nearly a century with, but at the same time Kagome held her own place in his heart.

Kagome shifted and Shippo found himself looking into glowing sapphires. A warmth entered her gaze as she looked down as him and he made an effort to appear as submissive as possible to her, happy when she brought him up so she could lay her scent on his person. A long time ago, she had asked how she could show affection to him in a way he understood, how he had instinctively done to her. He was glad she was willing to learn his demon traits and thanked every kami there was that she was given to him. She did not want to change him, she just wanted him to be himself.

He caught her eyes once more and he noticed that they were shinier than before. A content smile touching upon her lips, "do you really think so Shippo?"

He blinked in confusion then realized she must have heard his prayer. A light blush dusted his cheeks but he nodded anyways. "Of course mama, you are my everything."

The tears that fell down her cheeks sparkled in different colors and Shippo was fascinated. He brought a paw up to her face and gave her a watery smile.

"I'm so happy you think so my kit." He felt his chest swell with emotion and he threw himself into her neck, hugging her until he was sure his own happy tears dried. They sat there for a bit, undisturbed and he was glad. He had been unable to spend proper time with her like how they used to and this was needed for the both of them.

"Thank you mama," he whispered, remembering her cold face and empty eyes. He squeezed tighter. "Thank you for always being there for me."

Kagome stiffened slightly before she relaxed, a sad smile on her lips as she gently squeezed her kit towards her. She knew what he was thinking about and she only regretted that he saw her in such a state. "Anything for my kit."

They stayed together for a moment longer before Kagome pulled him back to look into his eyes. "Do you mind, if I ask?" Shippo stiffened in her hold but he nodded, knowing she was referring to the night she died.

She didn't want to push him too much, but before when she had asked, her kit was slightly reluctant to talk about the experience.

"What happened, after… " she trailed off and Shippo's eyes began to water. "Never mind, how about you tell me about the pretty fox you saw?"

His lower lip trembled but he took a deep breath and began. "I was crying, and then I heard her. She was pretty, dressed in gold but her tails, they were fluffy and soft. That's when I counted nine." She nodded and urged him to continue, knowing it had been Inari-sama that had approached him. "She gave me the scroll, and...breathed out her fox fire. It came into me and before I knew it, I had you on me and I was running, following the fire and ended up with Inukimi-sama."

Kagome smiled at him and kissed his forehead, nodding her thanks to him. "Do you know who that was, Shippo?" He shook his head in the negative.

"That was Inari-sama." Her kit froze and his eyes widened in shock before he blushed furiously. She raised a brow at him and he fidgeted with his tail, looking every bit the naughty child.

"Shippo?"

He muttered under his breath and even with her improved hearing, she was unable to make out what she said. "Shippo?" She called again. He sighed.

"I may have been a little rude, I cut her off and yelled a bit." His tail was thrashing wildly and he looked up at her from under his bangs. Kagome giggled, "don't worry, I think she was understanding of the...circumstances."

He heaved a sigh of relief and melted into her arms once more. A knock on the open door made them both look up at the sound, taking in the face of an apologetic Hajime.

"My lady, the sun has set."

Kagome glanced out the window and nodded, "Okay!"

Shippo noted her improved mood and he was glad he was able to help her sort some of her thoughts, even if it hurt him some to relive those memories.

Kagome stepped outside into the cool night air and was startled to see numerous servants at the step of her shrine. She was surprised to see a face she recognized and Torii come forward, bowing low.

"Kami-sama," she breathed. She was dressed in a deep brown kimono and Kagome couldn't help but think of her as a spirit of nature. Her green eyes and hair completed the look, making her seem as if she were a maiden of the forest.

"Hello Torii, I'm so happy you came." and truly she was. Kagome was glad that she could still give people genuine help, even if it was in a way different from how she preferred. Torii looked up and her green eyes focused on the floor in front of Kagome, refusing to meet her gaze.

The demoness smiled shyly and gestured towards the others behind her. "These girls and I had been under the power of the head maid you cursed."

Kagome flinched but she carried on as if she hadn't seen.

"And we would like to thank you, Kagome-kami for your kindness. Our lives have already improved greatly under another who genuinely cares for us."

Kagome smiled, "Look at me Torii," The woman hesitated before she slowly raised her green gaze to meet hers.

"You're welcome, please let me know if you are in need ever again."

Kuro watched from a distance as the maid bowed deeply to his charge once more. Kagome's blush and frantically waving hands amused him. The other maids followed suit and bowed, smiles on their faces as they asked her what they could do to help.

"How is she?"

Kuro nearly jumped out of his skin, his lord was the only one who could sneak up on him like that.

"She is well my lord." White hair came into his view as Sesshomaru slanted golden eyes his way. "And the head maid she 'cursed'?"

Kuro winced, "ah well, I am not quite sure of that situation my lord. We have not run into her again." His lord didn't answer, instead he turned golden eyes on the miko made kami. They were quiet for a while, each observing Kagome as she got to know each of the servants at her shrine. There was a gentle smile on her lips as she spoke to each one quietly, placing gentle hands on their shoulders or arms. He could see the servants were uncomfortable at first, but soon each relaxed under her calming aura. Kuro was able to make out the words they spoke, but out of respect he tuned them out and waited patiently away from the shrine.

His green eyes flickered to his lord who was staring at the kami, his face blank and his eyes impassive. He gave a mental sigh and was about to look away when he noticed a flash of emotion cross his lord's eye. Kuro stilled, his eyes narrowing. Ever so slightly he could see his eyes smolder briefly before the emotion was gone. He looked away and tried to hold back a grin that threatened to spread across his face. His lord could hide his feelings from most, but not from him, and especially not his mother.

He thought back to the plan Inukimi had conjured and he had been convinced it couldn't work, though now he was beginning to believe the demoness was indeed right. He looked back at Kagome and met the green eyes of her kit, his were full of mischief but flashed with understanding when their gaze met. Kuro did grin then, remembering the role the kit was to play, for who would suspect the kit of being the messenger between him and Inukimi? He hoped there weren't any consequences of meddling in a kami's affairs.

A low growl from Sesshomaru ripped him out of his thoughts and Kuro immediately took in his surroundings. Across the clearing and on the other side of the shrine was lord Shibata, and by the looks of it the demon was not pleased.

"Pardon me, my lord." He bowed his head towards the silver Inu and made his way to his charge.

Kagome's smile was gentle as she spoke with a servant, her dark blue locks were bound in a tight bun and her warm, brown eyes were pleading.. Things had gone smoother when Kagome managed to convince them to talk to her as a friend. They were reluctant at first, but then when they realized she would not hurt them they opened up.

"...and so, my mother can no longer perform her tasks as well, I beg you please, make her see sense. I do not wish for her to hurt herself." The soft voice of the maid made Kagome's heart clench and she nodded. Just as she was about to respond, her aura flinched back towards her, having felt something vile. Her head snapped up and her eyes met with a man. He was tall and lithe, dressed in black, fine clothes with pale skin and black hair. He had two silver stripes that ran along his jaw, they were small, but there nonetheless.

She turned to him and greeted him with a smile, motioning for the young demoness in front of her to wait. Kagome didn't miss the way the servants flinched when he neared and gave him a wide breadth. He stepped before her with a tight smile and bowed his head slightly.

"It would do you well to mind your manners, lord Shibata."

Kagome jumped and looked behind the man named Shibata, her eyes landing on Kuro's tense form. The smile on her face wavered slightly but she was determined to meet this man with an open heart.

Lord Shibata 'tsked' and bowed to her swiftly before rising. "You have cursed my daughter."

Uh oh.

Kagome now understood his attitude towards her and nodded her heads towards him. "Not a curse, her own decisions have turned it to that. She, of course, has the opportunity to change. If she does, it will become a blessing." She almost wanted to fidget but withheld herself, trying to look every bit the confidant kami she wasn't. She hoped he didn't ask her to take it away, because honestly she didn't know if she could. It had all been instinct, and she had let her fury overcome her.

Shibata's smile tightened and he moved up the steps so he towered over her. Kuro was hot on his heels, his usually bright eyes now a swirling dark green. A hand had fallen to the hilt of his sword and Kagome mentally warned him.

'No, Kuro.'

Kuro stiffened and Kagome knew he had heard her. She looked back up to meet Shibata's eyes and her gentle smile fell away. He was looking at her in disdain and he eyed the clothing she wore.

"Tell me, kami," The sneer he placed on the word had Kagome widening her eyes in realization. She reached with her power and touched his heart, sensing his doubt. The aura felt familiar and Kagome realized it was one of the few that she had encountered during her ceremony and when she walked the halls.

"You doubt." She cut him off and he faltered before pulling his lips back, exposing his fangs.

"I'd be a fool to believe you," he spat. His deep red eyes narrowing in disdain. She could feel Shippo's fur ruffle on her shoulder but she stroked him with her power, warning him to stay still.

"You call this one foolish, Shibata?"

Kagome glanced back and found Sesshomaru behind her, his eyes hard as he stared down at the lord. He didn't look at her, keeping his eyes trained on the now cowering demon.

"No! My lord I-"

"Then you doubt the west?"

Even she didn't think that was a fair question. The encompassing stillness knocked Kagome's breath away. Her wide blue eyes looked around and noticed everyone stood deathly still. Shibata was the first to move, he threw himself to the floor before Sesshomaru and shook his head vigorously.

"Never my lord!"

"Then you'll do well not to question those above you. She is as she says and you will not disgrace my lands." The steel bite of his voice made a shiver run down Kagome's spine, remembering long ago memories of their first encounters.

Kuro grabbed Kagome by the upper arm and tucked her behind him. She peeked above his shoulder and felt the air grow heavy, watching in fascination as Sesshomaru's jaki whipped around him, thoroughly subduing the demon before him. Shibata went even lower, though Kagome didn't quite know how that was possible, and nodded his head vigorously.

"Yes, my lord."

There was a moment of stillness before Sesshomaru reigned in his power and sneered. "Leave."

Shibata was gone before she knew it, only the rustling wind telling her it hadn't been an illusion. Though she appreciated the gesture, she doubted what Sesshomaru did would solve the problem. She glanced at him and bit her lip, knowing it would be better to wait to ask him questions. She had learned quickly from her years of talking to Sesshomaru, so she knew how to wait.

Kagome stepped around Kuro and glanced over at the group of servants, each had their eyes downcast and made a point to be demure. A frown tilted at her lips before she covered it with a gentle smile.

"You were saying?" The servants jumped but none refused to look up from the floor.

"Kami-sama." A woman stepped forward, her brown eyes still on the floor and her blue hair slightly loose from her bun. Sesshomaru's jaki must have ruffled it out of place. Kagome nodded to her and held her hand out, beckoning her to grab it.

With great hesitation, the demoness laid her hand in hers and Kagome noticed she immediately relaxed. The rigid posture she held melted away and brown eyes dared to meet her face. Kagome smiled wider at her bravery, knowing it was typically frowned upon in this era. Lucky for her, she wasn't from this era and much preferred people talking to her face.

"I shall speak to your mother for you."

Brown eyes brightened and she bowed with the grace only a youkai could. "Thank you, Kagome-kami!"

Her reply was cut off when Sesshomaru stood before his servants, his golden eyes sweeping over them. "If you truly mean your thanks, you may pray to her and keep her strength up while she claims her land."

A soft murmur broke out amongst them, shooting her sidelong glances.

"I would be honored to, my lord." Torii was the first to step forward, bowing to Kagome first then Sesshomaru. It felt so wrong. Kagome shifted, trying to ignore the obvious reminder to her status.

"It will take all night, you don't have to." She wanted to make sure it was because they wanted to, not because their lord suggested it.

"Please," Torii's green eyes met hers and before Kagome could protest, she continued.

"We have agreed to it. You will help us, let us honor you for it."

Now Kagome was unable to refuse. To do so would be to disregard them, and she never wanted anyone to think they were lesser. Especially not after it had been done to her. She let out a sigh and gave them a tentative nod.

"If you wish."

Smiles lit up their faces and they went to the bottom of the few marble steps, lining up along them as they sat down and clasped their hands. One by one, their eyes closed and Kagome felt the swell of their voices fill her mind. She stiffened for a moment before she closed her eyes and forced herself to breathe. Their prayers simmered down to comfortable background noise and she opened her blue eyes.

Kuro watched in awe as Kagome's skin brightened, and when she opened her eyes they were beacons of light in the dark. The blue hue reflected onto her cheeks and when she blinked, the glow didn't completely subside. Without another word he went down to join the maids, cutting off Kagome's protest with his gaze.

"Let me."

She sighed but nodded, walking down the steps with him. Once he was seated she gave his shoulder a squeeze, a grateful smile on her face.

"Thank you" she whispered, before walking forward to the center of the marble path.

Kagome looked up at Sesshomaru who had yet to move, surprised that he was watching her. His golden eyes shone under the torchlight, reflecting back the dangerous predator he was. He nodded to her and took a seat at the front of the shrine door. Above the others but still meaning to help her through the night.

"Mama, your skin is so bright." Shippo's disgruntled huff brought her out of her staring and she glanced down. She had gotten brighter. With each prayer that floated through her mind, strength joined. She took a deep breath to center herself and began to walk. Concentrating on the feel of the stone beneath her feet, the wind in her hair and the starlight on her skin. With each step she forced her power down into the earth, the same way she had done to her arrows several nights ago.

She remembered Shippo's wide eyes as she stowed him away, his pleading paws on her arms. She had felt the strength of their foe, and her instincts rallied her to keep him away. She was glad she listened to them. Kagome paused her walk briefly, taking a deep breath and forcing the thoughts back into a mental box. She would not look back, could not. She walked forward again, the surrealness of the situation finally hitting her at full force.

The power that thrummed though her threatened to steal her breath as she diligently forced it down into the earth. There was no mistaking this as a long dream, not anymore. The humming energy she felt was too real, the prayers that filled her mind too loud in the silence of the night. Kagome joined them in their prayer, her own going out to the kami that had decided to grant her a second chance, one in which she was still herself and even moreso. Her thoughts drifted to Kikyo and Kagome couldn't help the sad smile that forced itself on to her face. The priestess had been doing her duty, in life and in resurrection. Kagome wondered if she too would have become as bitter as her if her second chance had turned out that way. Regardless, she wished her well, wherever she may be.

She turned a corner towards the front of the shrine and found Hajime looking at her from his place near the door. His brown eyes were scrunched in worry, following her as she walked. She gave him a small smile and tilted her head to reassure him but he didn't seem convinced. Silently, he walked to her and kept pace. The usually loud boy was quiet as he contemplated their situation.

"Do you ever regret it?"

Kagome looked down at him, a question in her eye. She wasn't quite sure what he was getting at. He stayed silent, his eyes looking down at his feet as they rounded a corner once more. Just when she thought he wouldn't talk, a whisper pierced the silence.

"A few hundred years ago, I saw Midoroku." She snapped his eyes to him, but he was staring up at the moon, lost in thought.

"I remember seeing her battle, how desperate she seemed, how tired." He looked at her again, his brown eyes far away. "She was scared, but she gave it all she had anyways. You remind me of her in that way." He studied her, his brown eyes regaining focus as he trailed his eyes along the curves of her face.

"And I think being near you is giving me back my memories."

She didn't know what to say. Hajime was giving her his own words of encouragement in the only way he could give proper meaning. Midoroku was legendary, and Kagome most certainly was not. She gave him a smile, "Thank you Hajime, it's nice to know that you think so highly of me."

He shook his head, his wild curly hair bouncing messily. "I think you are better, my lady."

"Many do." Kagome spun at the new voice, her heart beating wildly. The force of power that had appeared behind her was sudden, strong, and there. Even human, there was no way she could have missed someone so like that sneaking up on her. Then how-

Her eyes met electric blue. Lightning crackled along Raijin's body, the drum still held securely in his left hand and she noticed then that his feet never touched the floor. She glanced at Hajime and frowned when she noticed he was stock still, as if frozen in time. Kagome nudged Shippo who still hung onto her shoulder, but he was equally as frozen.

"They are fine, I simply came to give my congratulations." Kagome relaxed, not realizing how tense she had gotten. She eyed the god again and tilted her head in confusion.

"Congratulate?"

He rolled his eyes in exasperation and gestured around him. "Surely you can feel it? Your first niche in the world?" He pointed a finger down and a bright rod of lightning shot out, but to Kagome's amazement it didn't hit the ground, it simply fizzled out and evaporated. Her mind ran a mile a minute before she beamed him a wide smile, catching him off guard.

"Oh, it's done!" She squealed excitedly; all prior traces of melancholy gone. She skipped towards him and stretched out her arms in a hug, her face only going up to his lower chest from how he hovered above the ground.

"Thank you!" She was unable to see it, but Rajin had gone still, his expression relaxing into a gentle smile. Off in the distance, he saw his familiar give him a grin full of teeth and he could nearly hear the wolf's teasing. He scowled and patted Kagome's head awkwardly, putting some distance between them as he straightened once more. He was never going to live this down.

"Yes, yes." He grumbled, causing her to giggle. He sighed, deciding that there was nothing normal about this woman and left it at that. "Your claim happened a few minutes ago, yet you were too lost in thought, so I decided to come here and show you such." It was a good excuse, but he noted that Kagome saw right through him. Though he was serious to some degree.

"Of course, of course!" she beamed at him, her gentle aura bright with excitement. Raijin glanced at the youkai guard that was frozen in prayer at the base of the steps and shook his head. That kitsune was in for a rough ride he could tell, this woman practically breathed trouble. He tore his eyes away from him and quenched the feelings of pity, "do you know what to do now?"

She grew solem and nodded, her face setting into determination. "Yes" her answer was strong and full of her resolve. "I think."

He snorted, beckoning his familiar forward and turning from her. "Then follow your instincts," he paused and looked back over his shoulder, his hand gripping the wolf's fur in reprimand. "And go easy on that guard of yours, I feel there's only so many more surprises he can take!"

Kagome blushed furiously as a laughing Rajin ascended back into the sky, his voice echoing around even as motion continued around her. Kuro was next to her in an instant, his hackles raised as he looked around for a threat.

"Lady Kagome, what has happened?" His green eyes were narrowed as he scanned the perimeter, his muscles tense and ready to pounce.

"It was Rajin, it's okay though, he just wanted to congratulate me." She took note of his incredulous look and smiled, motioning him to relax. "I was surprised too, but I guess that's okay, life is full of them."

Kuro eyed her for a moment before relaxing and nodding hesitantly. He glanced over to lord Sesshomaru who stood silently a few feet away, his golden gaze searching the sky.

"Come then my lady, I believe this is a cause for celebration." He motioned for her to walk first and he grabbed a gaping Hajime by the collar, following behind. Once he was sure Hajime would keep his own footing, he motioned for Kagome to go on ahead without him. He glanced back at the daiyoukai and met his gaze, nodding his head in respect.

He moved to stand next to him and hesitated briefly before forcing himself to speak. "I was unable to tell anything was amiss until the end." He bowed his head in frustration, hoping not all the kami could stop time.

"You are not to blame." Sesshomaru's golden eyes pierced him, and Kuro nearly shivered at the ice they held. There was an undercurrent of anger in them, but he knew it was not directed at him. "The gods meddle, we are not gods."

And Kuro understood. There were some things that they would be unable to do. That was just one example, and a reminder of further things to come. He felt his own frustration rise but bit it back osharply. His lord was frustrated at the notion enough, he didn't need to add his own wood to the fire.

"I shall do all that I can, my lord." And he would. Even though he couldn't be there for everything, Kuro would do his best while she was in his care. Sesshomaru didn't respond, he simply nodded and walked away, leaving Kuro to think about the vast scales of power he would encounter in silence.

TBTW

Sesshomaru stood at the edge of the balcony, his eyes trained on the golden shrine. He had felt the moment the land was no longer his, and though he had been reluctant to let go a piece of his inheritance, he knew it was in good hands. That was not what bothered him the most though, but even now he was unable to think of a way to counteract the powers of a god.

"You ran away again."

Sesshomaru tensed, his eyes steeling as he turned and gave his mother a bland look.

"Hnn"

She rolled her eyes and walked the rest of the way in, her furs coiled tightly around her for warmth. A cool breeze gusted past him and into the room, threatening the low fire that lit his study.

"The north will soon be in the thick of its winter. Ours is beginning." His mother spoke and sniffed the breeze delicately, her dainty form lowering to the shallow table. He stayed near the balcony and enjoyed the cool air, letting it slither along his form and wrap around his nose. The bite had just entered the air, and it was a smell he was all too fond of.

"She leaves tomorrow yes?"

He inclined his head slightly, his eyes roaming back out to the shrine. His mother hummed in thought. "Kuro is in need of a break; it is cruel to let his mate wait for him so."

Her golden eyes slid to her son's stiff back, a sly smile on her lips. "Now that she has land, she will be fine out by her own." She paused and observed her son, noticing the slight dents his claws made in the wooden railing.

"One shrine is not enough; she is also untrained." His voice was stiff as he spoke and Inukimi smothered a grin. Forcing her face into impassiveness she eyes him as he turned.

"The monk and taija are sure to go, perhaps another strong yokai close to Kuro shou-"

"No"

She barely managed to contain her jaki in its tight confines, not daring to give anything away. Instead, she raised a brow at her son as he turned her way.

"It is this Sesshomaru's duty to uphold our honor, I shall escort the miko to her shrines." If she were a lesser lady, a smirk would have plastered itself to her lips. She nodded regalley, her silver tails sweeping past her shoulders as she pretended to give her son's decision thought.

"You are correct, perhaps it should be more personal then."

He nodded to her and turned back around, accepting her words. Inukimi was under no illusion that Sesshomaru didn't suspect something l, but she was happy he was going along.

"Did you feel him?" The question had her furrowing her eyebrows in confusion.

"No, then." Sesshomaru continued and stared back out at the shrine.

"Rajin came."

Inukimi stilled, her sharp eyes snapping to the shrine. "Truely?" It would have been a sight to behold she was sure but being completely unaware of such a strong kami near them made something in her become unsettled. Her son didn't answer, and she raised her voice to get his attention.

"Sesshomaru, we mus-"

She cut herself off, tilting her head to the side at the sound of rushing footsteps. Sesshomaru turned from the balcony, his eyes narrowing. He didn't even wait for the messenger to knock, growling out an "enter" as the footsteps slowed.

An inuyoukai of low birth floated in, his eyes downcast and his aura tense. "My lord, a message from the border."

She stilled, remembering the last time a message of such importance had to be passed this urgently. Golden eyes landed on her son and she let out a soft sigh. He was older now and better able to protect himself.

"Speak" his voice held nothing to give his emotions away.

The messenger hesitated, "Lord Sesshomaru, Inuyasha comes."

She could feel the slight shake of her son's power and before he could lose control she snapped at the youkai. "Leave."

Once the door was shut, she stood and made her way towards him. Eying the way his claws sunk into his palms. Without a word he grabbed his swords and strapped them to his hip, ready to leave.

Sesshomaru stopped when he reached the balcony, his mother's hand holding him back by the sleeve. He turned and met her gaze, noting the swell of some unnamed emotion in her eyes.

He blinked and it was gone, her cool demeanor firmly in place.

"This one shall go; you must stay close now more than ever." His mother's voice dared him to argue. He narrowed his eyes at her, his aura expanding out to blanket the room. She didn't even flinch, her eyes impassive and posture straight. He sighed internally and forced his power back, coiling it tightly into himself. She was right.

"Why?"

She looked away from him and stared off into the distance, giving nothing away. "To others my honor is intact, whole and without a blemish." A twisted smile marred her red lips, her eyes lost in memories.

Sesshomaru didn't miss the hint of what she said. In some way, his mother had a flaw in her honor. He flexed his left arm and looked away from her, gazing out into the distance. The darkness slinked away from the moonlight and encroached upon the land. Drawing out predators and forgotten shames.

"Very well." He thought he heard his mother's heart flutter in relief but didn't comment on it. She turned to face him, her face set in stone.

"This one shall return." With a gust of her jaki she took to the sky, a gleaming sword in hand. Sesshomaru looked down at his empty scabbard and clenched his jaw, biting back his anger. He would trust his mother.

TBTW

The forest was a dark blur as he raced by. Cold bit at Inuyasha's feet as he ran, his golden eyes unfocused as he let his nose guide him. The kit's scent was fading and being overtaken by the forest, but his nose followed the sharp tang of blood that accompanied it. He glanced at the moon ahead, it's slow descent across the sky was leading him west, and like it or not he had no choice but to follow. He would give anything to make sure Kagome was alright, the guilt that he felt every time thought of her was nearly crippling with its grasp. He clenched his teeth as he felt his heart squeeze, his darkest fears playing in the back of his mind. He had left her, a girl of the future to fend for herself in a world not her own. He had been so, so stupid.

Inuyasha came to a halt, his quick breathing the only sound in the forest. Golden eyes glanced around warily as he dropped a hand to his sword. The leaves scattering on the ground was the only noise in the small clearing, the moonlight that barely shone through the thick foliage was enough for Inuyasha to follow their trail.

His ears swiveled, straining to catch any sound out of the ordinary, the weight of the silence making him wary. Suddenly, a swirl of heavy power thundered in front of him, and a pale demoness stood in the center. The trees strained and groaned under the pressure of her aura, seeming to bow at her very presence. He reached down and drew Tessaiga, pausing when the sword refused to transform. He cursed under his breath and held the rusty sword at the ready anyways.

"Who are you lady?" She didn't respond. Instead, she scanned him up and down, her glowing golden eyes assessing and contemplative. The shifting winds scattered the dappled light and Inuyasha caught the reflection of a sword. He cursed again, taking a sniff and growling. She was downwind and he couldn't get a good reading from her. Inuyasha clenched his jaw, his sharp gaze giving her another onceover, noting the similarities between her and his brother. As far as he knew though, he didn't have a sister.

"You trespass on this land" her voice was cold and calculating, her eyes glowing briefly with her power.

He snarled at her, trying to will his sword to transform. "Oh yeah? What are you, that bastard's lap dog!?"

He didn't even have a chance to blink, because before he knew it, he was slammed into a tree. The air in his lungs rushed out and Inuyasha bared his teeth at the demoness through his pain. Her left hand was at his throat, claws piercing the delicate flesh of his neck deep enough to hurt. The tip of her sword lowered to his jugular and Inuyasha struggled anew. He tried to kick her back but the claws on his throat tightened and he let out a guttural growl from his belly. The sharp smell of poison made his hackles raise and he tensed, clenching his eyes shut and waiting for the pain.

There was none.

After a moment, he opened his eyes and met sorrowful gold pools. Her face was fierce, her teeth bared, but her sword arm shook slightly. Inuyasha took a shallow breath, watching her in confusion. Her face was morphed into anger, but he could nearly feel her anguish, and strangely enough her hesitance. Her words had his eyes widening.

"Prove to me, that you were worthy of the sacrifice of my mate" she whispered, her silver hair blowing into his face. With her hair came her scent.

He could guess by then, but he had to be sure. Inuyasha sniffed and stilled completely, feeling his heart skip a beat. He traced the magenta moon on her brow with his gaze and he grunted in realization. The lady of the west, and the only person his old man had let down.

His ears pinned back, his breath shook, and grim understanding took hold in his heart. His chest ached in dread and he shook his head as best as he was able.

He opened his eyes, not realizing he had closed them. The demoness was once again composed, cool, and indifferent. Swallowing thickly, he bit out, "I-I'm not." He had years to think it over. Every night he saw hard brown eyes filled with hatred and blue eyes filled with tears. His father had only ever made one mistake, and Inuyasha found it was one he was repeating.

She narrowed her eyes at him and he continued, "I never should have left her." He didn't think the demoness would know what he was talking about, but her sharp gaze told him otherwise. She seemed to be waiting for him to continue and he bared his fangs at her, not ready to admit his failure to her. She didn't seem to be asking for a whole explanation though.

"Did you deserve her?" Inukimi struggled to remain composed. The half demon in front of her reminded her so sharply of her dead mate. He looked at her, and she could almost see the same look Toga had given her centuries ago, just before he left. It was a fierce look filled with all his determination and regret.

Inuyasha let out a shuddering high, the fight leaving him just as quickly as it had come. He glanced at the Tessaiga, laying abandoned in the grass a few meters away. Even now with his life in danger, it refused to help him. It told him all he needed. "No." He didn't look back up at her, his eyes staying locked on the sword.

"So be it."

Her claws tightened and he stiffened, golden eyes meeting as she plunged the sword into his throat.

This chapter is almost two (about 20 pages), so hopefully it makes up for my tardiness a wee bit.

Sorry if my style changes slightly over the course of the story. It's been a while since I've written and I'm trying to remember my preferred method. I think I found it again.

Thanks for your reviews and favs/follows! I read everything!

Ideas welcomed.
