That last chapter was kinda dark.
I think we could all use a little break from the drama!
...at least for awhile.

Early Bird

Waking up early as per usual, Papyrus sat up from the nest of blankets and pillows and stretched in an effort to awaken his sleepy bones. Feeling wide awake and rested, the tall skeleton greeted the new day with a smile. This was going to be a good day, he could feel it in his bones! Today would be the day he finally caught a...
"The Human!" Papyrus gasped as he leapt to his feet and rushed over to his bed. Looking down at the rumpled bedsheets all he could find was his brother's jacket. Curling his long finger bones around the pale blue fabric, the skeleton hesitated for a moment as a feeling of unease fell over him. Would he find a pile of dust? Reluctantly, he lifted the jacket from the bed to reveal... even more rumpled sheets!
Letting out an audible sigh of relief, Papyrus unconsciously hugged the jacket to his chest. Oh thank goodness! He literally didn't know how he would have handled such a thing. Turning, the taller skeleton walked back over to the carpet to wake up his lazybones of a brother, only to find that he was mysteriously missing as well.
"Sans?" Papyrus asked as he looked underneath some of the more bulky mounds of blankets. Where was he? Sans was a notoriously late sleeper, so he should still be here.
A few minutes later, the taller skeleton had finally emerged from his room after compulsively putting everything back in order. Leaving a mess for later was simply unacceptable in his opinion. If only his brother could adopt the same attitude! Winter coat neatly folded in one hand, Papyrus headed downstairs to look for his brother and the tiny human. They must be somewhere around here. The house wasn't that big.
Easily spotting the two on the lumpy green couch, Papyrus grinned and walked over. It was quite a curious sight, really. Sans, as he normally found him, was sprawled out on the couch cushions, his skull was resting on the armrest and an arm and a leg hanging over the side. What wasn't normal however, was the sight of the little human wedged between his older brother and the couch. With a bony arm draped over her, the child slept in the opposite direction, her small arms wrapped around a femur while one short leg was lounging across the skeleton's improbable stomach.
Hearing a strange clicking noise, Fearia's amber eyes snapped open in an instant, survival instincts kicking in. She was met with the sight of the second skeleton brother looming over her. Feeling on edge, she quickly disentangled herself from her odd sleeping position and sat up. Was he going to try to capture her again? What should she do?
"Good Morning, Human." Papyrus greeted happily as he tucked away his phone. "Are You Feeling Better Today?"
"Mm hm." Fearia nodded, a frown slowly forming on her face. "Are you going to try to capture me again?" Blunt as ever, the child got right to the point of her concerns.
"Worry Not, Small Human," Papyrus arched an eyebrow bone and grinned, placing a gloved hand to his bony hip. "I Do Not Intend To Capture You At This Time."
"You don't?" The little girl looked suddenly hopeful, a smile tugging at her lips.
"Of Course Not." The taller skeleton replied. "Don't You Know What Time It Is?"
Cocking her head to the side like a confused puppy, Fearia answered what she thought was obvious. "It's morning?"
Nodding, Papyrus smiled down to the child. "Correct! And Every Morning Starts With A Nice Hearty Breakfast! Would You Like To Help Me Prepare It?"
Amber eyes lit up in excitement. "Yes!" The little girl chirped before clambering over the sleeping skeleton. Sans grunted in his sleep at the rough treatment and rolled over onto his side, now facing the inside of the couch. Ignoring him completely, Fearia bounced energetically on the balls of her feet, hands clasped in front of her. "I want to help!"
"Great!" Papyrus beamed at the tiny human. "Meet Me In The Kitchen."
"Okay!" Fearia obliged as she hurried off towards the kitchen. She had to slow down after only a few steps however, when her injuries from the night before came throbbing back to life. Her knee hurt worst of all! Stinging pain ran up and down her leg each time she took a step. Where was a healing star when she needed one?
Papyrus chuckled to himself as he set his brother's jacket on the couch beside him before bending down to retrieve the fallen blanket. Once Sans was snugly covered up, he nodded down to him with a satisfied smile. Skeletons didn't really need blankets since they didn't get cold, but the feeling of being covered up was just as comforting to them as any other monster.
That taken care of, Papyrus followed the child into the kitchen. What would they make for breakfast? Well, pasta, of course!
...
The sound of joyful laughter roused Sans from his sleep. That wasn't Papyrus... Oh right, they had a kid in their house now... How could he forget? Hearing the sound of his brother's voice from the kitchen, Sans felt himself begin to lull back to sleep. The human didn't sound scared so that must mean they were getting along. There was no need for him to worry, his bro could handle her for a little while...
The sound of light pitter pattering of tiny feet came from the kitchen and trailed over to the sleeping skeleton. Still facing the inside of the couch, Sans quite literally played dead. It was too early for this... He just wanted a few more hours of sleep.
"Sans." Fearia called from right beside him.
Trying his best to ignore the small child, Sans didn't make any indication that he had heard her. This was just great... If he'd known she was a morning person like Paps, he would have left her back at the door to the Ruins. One morning person was bad enough...
Sans held back a groan of irritation as small hands pressed against his back and pushed him softly a few times trying to get his attention. just go away. just go away. just go away... The lazy skeleton chanted silently inside his skull as he still refused to move.
"Sans!" Fearia pouted as she pressed against his back a little harder. She hated being ignored! "Pappy told me to tell you that breakfast is ready!"
"pappy...?" Sans asked sleepily, the word muffled by the lumpy couch cushion. He cursed at himself privately when he realized his mistake. The persistent alarm clock disguised as a little girl knew he was awake now. The jig was up! ...and now ...so was he...
With great reluctance, the sleepy skeleton rolled back over onto his back and then pulled his tired bones up into a sitting position. The little girl, as expected, was right there to greet him with a bright morning person smile. As if attempting to block out the energetic jubilance, Sans's eye sockets slowly drooped shut again as sleep tried to reclaim him while he sat there.
The small child let out a huff of exasperation at the difficult skeleton. Cheeks puffing out in annoyance, Fearia walked between his bony legs and reached up to push him grumpily on his sternum. "Wake up...!"
Being successfully shaken awake again, Sans's eye sockets opened for a second time and he glowered down at the sulking child. This time however, he really took in her appearance. Instant irrational worry gripped him as he spotted the bright red splatters across her borrowed nightshirt as well as a little on her cheek. Without thinking, the worried skeleton quickly lifted a bony hand and reached out for the small child's face.
Fearia flinched out of habit and closed her eyes as she felt a thumb bone gently wipe something off of her cheek. She truly didn't believe her skeleton friend would harm her, but her reflexes had been hardwired into her system over the years. Opening her amber eyes, the little girl looked up, only to catch the apologetic look on the skeleton's skull, his grin lessened considerably.
"heh... spaghetti for breakfast again, i take it." Sans said calmly. "sorry for scaring ya, kid." He really hadn't meant to startle her, he had just kind of overreacted. Seeing the tiny child flinch like that because of him though, was particularly unpleasant. It made him feel like garbage.
"You didn't scare me." Fearia lied as she grabbed hold of the regretful skeleton's hand. "We are having spaghetti. Come on!" With an eager tug, she finally got her friend to follow her. The sooner they got back to the kitchen, the sooner they could eat! She still didn't quite understand what this 'spaghetti' was or how it tasted but she was excited to find out.
