Izuku Midoriya saw them.
Whether it was thanks to his eyes, or something else entirely, he saw them.
He always has.
The beings that hid behind the shadows, in the cracks of the glass that made up reality. Gaining ever closer, ever nearer. Reaching out, past the darkness, into the light of the world, changing, morphing, evolving ever stronger.
Everyone else idly walked by the shadowed corridor that held the beings, none the wiser, unaware of the malefic entities mere inches away from the very cores of their existence.
Regular people might've ended it soon after seeing the horrors of the deep, plagues of everything they touched.
Some probably have, who's to know.
The beings, made of fear, rage, hatredincarnate, enough to drive a man mad, watched silently. Perhaps they never knew the pain they inflicted on others. Perhaps they were innocent bystanders to the suffering they caused, unknowing of the families they've torn apart.
Who's to know.
Staring into their eyes, the world around him grew gray, dulling the vibrancy of life itself in their shadows.
Brave men made to children under their gaze, made known to the fear of the beasts.
None so as brave as Izuku Midoriya, or maybe none so as arrogant.
Izuku couldn't help but smile.
"I'm going to be a hero for a reason. To save this world, both from itself, and you."
(line break pepperonis)
Aizawa Shouta liked to think of himself as a rather normal human being, all things considered. He did his normal day of teaching students, of the hero variety of course, went out on a small two to three hour patrol, and then went home to sleep with his cats, while he waited for Hizashi to get home and cook dinner. All in all, a pretty normal life in an extraordinary world.
That's why when a green haired child flashed past him, he tried his best to ignore it. It wasn't his job, not after he got this teaching gig. Some other hero could take care of it.
He tried, and tried, and tried.
But you could never really teach an old dog new tricks, could you?
Sighing, he unfastened his Capture Weapon, and like in the old comics, used it to swing from railing to railing connected to the two story buildings all around them. It took a minute or two catch up to the kid, the kid was fast, but when he did, he noticed that the kid was just jogging now. No super speed attached this time, it seemed.
Still, gotta do what he's gotta do.
Jumping down, he quickly reached out to tap the kid on the shoulder, but then something surprising happened.
His hand stopped, a good two inches away from the boy, and he could not for the life of him push it any closer.
The boy seemed to have taken notice of his plight, and turned around. Their eyes connected, and Aizawa, rather than being surprised of the famed eyes he'd heard of in quite whispers at the top of the Hero world, just sighed. He really should've not chased this kid.
Because his life, for better or for worse, just got a whole lot more troublesome.
(line break pepperonis)
Izuku felt the pull of his quirk telling him someone push against his ever present barrier. It'd originally just been for practice, but apparently he practiced too much and now it was subconscious.
Whoops?
Turning around, his eyes met the tired eyes of the Pro in front of him. A Pro who he might be the only hero otaku in Japan to have heard of. That caused a thought to enter his head, one that he would cherish for all eternity.
He just met two of his favorite Heroes in one day. A miracle.
Aizawa was surprised when the greenette fell to his knees, crocodile tears streaming down the freckled face. He frowned, a thought flashing across his own mind.
His face wasn't that scary, was it? Sure, he was appreciative of it during his classes, but not to a regular kid in public.
Before his self esteem crumpled even further, the kid whipped out his phone, an inquisitive gleam in his eyes. "Hey, Eraserhead, can I please get a selfie? A friend of mine won't believe I met another Pro Hero today!" The kid's crystalline eyes tore through his soul, and before he knew it, he was placed behind a camera, the kid holding up a peace sign. The camera shutter flashed, and the kid gave out a very interesting (read: manly, of course) squeal.
Eraserhead was just surprised that he had a fan. Not many people knew of Underground Heroes, and he was even more less known than that. Beyond that, did that kid say he met another Pro before him? Aizawa chuckled, the kid was making rounds, that was for sure.
Remembering why he was there, Aizawa caught the kids attention. "Hey kid, as nice as that picture was, did you know that you were using your quirk in public?" The kids easygoing air didn't dampen when he nonchalantly nodded, as he looked up at the older man.
Aizawa sighed for what seemed like the millionth time that day, and pinched the bridge of his nose. "Alright kid, before we go any further, why were you using your quirk?"
Izuku's eyes flashed, an untold amount of fear in them. "Oh, yeah, well. My mom's been expecting me to be home like, an hour ago. She gets pretty scary when she doesn't know I'm safe." Izuku gave out a chuckle after that, hunching his shoulders and rubbing his hands together in a conspiratory manner, "What she doesn't know, is that I've met two Pro Heroes today, and have gotten selfies with the both of 'em. Her and Neji-chan are gonna freak."
Chuckling, for a reason Aizawa couldn't place, the Hero tried to rest a hand on the kids shoulder. Surprisingly, it worked this time, and his hand fell right on target. "Why don't we have a walk and talk about proper quirk usage, and get you home before your mother worries to much."
(line break pepperoni)
The walk towards Izuku's apartment complex had been a highlight of Aizawa's day, not that he'd tell anyone that fact. The kid, whose name he'd learned to be Izuku in conversation, was a bright and easygoing individual, who wasn't afraid to make jokes with the Pro Hero, even if they were at Aizawa's expense. The conversation, after the brief awkward stint when Aizawa actually did his job and reprimanded the kid, took a turn towards what Izuku might want to do in the future. Izuku confidently said that he was going to study at U.A., and it seemed like there was no doubt in his mind that he was going to get in.
Aizawa secretly chuckled. Hopefully the kid was in his class, it'd be nice to have a familiar face in there with him.
"So, problem child, what've you done to prepare for U.A.?" Aizawa's curiosity got the better of him, he'd admit.
Izuku looked over the rims of his glasses, dismissive of the nickname, at him as they walked down the relatively empty street. "Well, I've pretty much mastered my quirk. There's a few Super Moves I'd like to iron out before school starts, but they're pretty complicated so we'll see how far I get with those. As for the next ten months, I'm gonna find someway to get physically stronger and faster. I may already be somewhat fit, but I need to be more so to supplement my quirk."
'So the problem child has a gameplan already', Aizawa mused. They reached Izuku's apartment complex, which coincidentally, was only a 20 minute walk from Aizawa's own place of residence. Small world, huh?
Walking up the stairs, he turned to Izuku. "Well, Midoriya, this is it for a while," Aizawa grumbled, not wanting to lose contact with the kid quite yet. 'Unless-' "Hey, problem child, why don't you train with me for the next ten months?" There was more hope in his voice than Aizawa would like to admit, but the kid grew on him in the thirty minutes he'd known him. If he already didn't know the kids quirk, he'd assume Izuku had a charisma quirk.
Izuku, on the other hand, was shocked. The Eraserhead had just offered to train him! Slapping himself out of his shock, both metaphorically and literally, he held out a hand.
"Deal, teach."
Aizawa smirked, having found the little interaction funny, and shook the boys hand. "Meet me at the front of the apartment complex tomorrow at 3."
At that, Izuku scratched the back of his head, a slight blush on his face. "Sorry, teach, but I can't do tomorrow. Gotta meet up with a friend."
Aizawa didn't pride himself on being one of the best Underground Heroes for nothing, and easily saw the type of embarrassment the kid had. He smirked, ready to get revenge for all the jokes the kid sent his way. "So lil' Midoriya's got a date tomorrow, huh? I suppose I can let you off one day, although I can't believe you'd ditch your new sensei for a girl." Dramatically sighing, clutching his chest, like the decision truly hurt his feelings, he'd thought he'd won. Victory was in his grasp.
"I wish it were a date, teach. But Neji-chan's to dense to realize I've been flirting with her for the past three months. She's great, but also probably the most air headed person I've ever met, and I've met you." Ignoring the jab towards his laziness, Aizawa enjoyed the exasperated sigh that followed, which was almost as good as victory, so he'd take the consolation prize. He also folded the girls name in a small folder in the back of his head. It sounded vaguely familiar. Coughing into his hand, Aizawa smirked again.
"Well, whatever it is, enjoy it. After that, it's going to be intense physical hell for the next ten months. Now, meet me in the front of the apartment complex at 6 A.M. in two days, then."
Izuku sighed, but never lost the easygoing grin. "Gimme your best shot, teach. I won't let you down."
After they exchanged numbers, Izuku went into his apartment, where he was sure to be given a stern talking to by his mother.
Aizawa just headed home, and laid on the couch with his cats till 'Zashi got home. He'd love to hear about Izuku.
(line break pepperonis)
The next ten months flew by like a breeze.
The day after his 'fated' meeting with the two Pro Heroes, Izuku went and saw his best friend, and not-so-secret crush, Nejire Hado.
Izuku couldn't help but smile fondly at the memory, like he does with nearly every other memory he has with her.
(flashback sequence pepperonis)
Izuku rose out of bed with a start, woken up by the sound of his alarm, which was playing a song called "Kaikai Kitan" by a local artist named Eve.
Banger song, if he didn't say so himself. Really felt something in him resonate with it.
The greenette slowly looked around his room, still groggy from the sudden wake up. Then it finally dawned on him, and a grin crossed his face. He bolted up, grabbing some clothes and made a mad dash towards the bathroom. He was gonna set a world record in that shower, just you watch.
Because today he'd be seeing Nejire for the first time in months.
Apparently U.A. has a seriously intense workload around this time of year, and she'd also just gotten back from one of her internships with Ryukyu, who was stationed further into Tokyo. Who woulda thought that the most prestigious school in the country required its students to actually be vigilant about their work?
Deciding he'd spent enough time rambling to himself in the shower, he dashed out and quickly dried off. Throwing on his clothes, which were a pair of black jeans, a simple white v-cut shirt, and a black blazer, and putting on his now signature glasses, he dashed through the house and out the door, saying a quick goodbye to his mom on the way out.
Inko Midoriya couldn't help but smile. She knew how badly her son crushed on his best friend, and knew how happy she made the usually sarcastic and easygoing kid.
She just hoped, when he did confess, that Nejire would return his feelings.
There were no ulterior motives like having a cute daughter-in-law or adorable grandchildren.
No. Never.
(line break-ception pepperonis)
Izuku finally dropped out of the sky, using his quirk to speedily fly to Nejire and his meeting spot.
Hopefully there were no Heroes around to get him for that. He could only pray.
Looking around, he didn't see the signature periwinkle of his best-friend-turned-crushes hair. Frowning ever so slightly, he continued to survey the plaza, near the pizza place they both enjoyed, hoping to see the bubbly girl.
Of course his Infinity didn't stop said girl from sneaking up on him, from slamming her hands on his shoulders with a loud "Izuku!".
It could really never stop her, could it?
Turning around, and complaining that she nearly gave him a heart attack, he finally got a good look at her.
She was dressed in a simple but beautiful light blue sweater, which tucked into her blue jeans, which were fastened by a simple leather belt. Her hair, which even in the braid it was braided into, fell past the small of her back. On her feet were simple converse, of which he remember her painting the blue flowers on when she started her third year at U.A.
She was beautiful.
And he was staring.
Snapping out of it, he smiled down at the slightly shorter girl, who in the past complained that he was growing to fast, 'like a weed' were her exact words. Not his fault his hair was green, he blamed it on genetics.
"So, how does pizza sound, on me?"
With that, Nejire perked up, grabbed his hand in hers, and began to drag him into the pizza restaurant, excitedly going over new toppings she wanted to try on her pie.
Izuku's face turned from serene and happy, to downright horrified in a matter of moments.
Mayonnaise did not belong on pizza!
(line break to end the flashback, pepperonis)
Izuku, no matter how horrified of his friends odd taste in pizza choices, still loved her. She was his first, and really only, friend that he's gotten in the past couple of years. All the other people left, complaining that he was "too good" at everything, and that he made everything "boring and un-fun to play".
It wasn't his fault he was awesome, now was it?
Anyway, the day after that his training with Aizawa started. And hoo boy.
The man is a slave driver in the most accurate of terms.
(line break pepperonis)
Aizawa met up with him outside his apartment at 6 A.M. sharp, an ungodly hour if you were to ask Izuku, but it was to train him for U.A., so he really couldn't complain much. He made Izuku jog after him, 'more like a sprint, how can a guy usually confined to his sleeping bag move so fast for so long?', towards a desolated beach filled with trash.
Aizawa slowed to a stop when he neared the gate to the junkyard, and turned around to his ten month protege, who was slightly winded at best after the two mile jog.
"In addition to the standardized physical regiment I'm going to saddle you with, you're gonna clean this beach till there's not a single can left," Izuku nodded, hands behind his head, with determination blazing in his eyes, "And, while I don't think I need to tell you this, no quirk usage allowed to help you clean this place, capisce?"
After getting a nod from the boy, he opened the gate behind him. Moving, or maybe wading would be a better term, through the trash, he eventually came to a place that hadn't been swamped by refrigerators or cars. It was along the shoreline, and looked out towards the sea, probably towards the direction of China, if Aizawa had to guess.
Once again turning around to the greenette, he pulled a small stack of papers in a manila folder out of his pocket. Nodding to himself, he handed the folder to the kid. When given a questioning glance, he replied with a simple, "It's your training regiment. Stick to that for the next couple of years, and up the reps or weight accordingly, and you'll be set for the hero lifestyle by the time you graduate." Izuku nodded, and set the folder next to his jacket, and prepped for whatever Aizawa was going to throw at him.
"We'll start easy. Drop and give me fifty."
This was going to be a long ten months.
(line break pepperonis)
And so here he was, ten months of hell later, and the results far outweighed the lack of sleep he potentially had at the beginning. Sure, he was fit enough before, but now he was more than confident in his body. He could lift over three hundred fifty pounds in a deadlift now, which even Aizawa thought was impressive.
Also, abs were really cool man.
He snapped out of his reverie when he felt someone breach his "protective little bubble", as Aizawa-sensei called it. That person just happened to be the person he was looking for.
Bakugo Katsuki.
Bakugo and him were standing out front of the U.A. building, ready to take their Entrance Exams to earn a place in the U.A. Heroics Course. Both of them were wearing simple tracksuits, ready to tackle whatever the school had in store for them.
"'Sup four-eyes, you ready to have me destroy you in the tests today?" Bakugo challenged, although there was no bite in his words. Izuku shuddered at the thought if he hadn't awakened Limitless, and kept the blonde in line.
What a horrifying reality.
Izuku just smirked back, "I don't know, bomber boy, guess we'll see how it feels when you see my name in first place." Their friendly banter continued as they walked to the gym where they were to get their instructions, then came to an end when they reached the doorway leading into said gym. Ironically enough they were seated next to each other. Must've been sorted by school.
As they sat down and got situated, the gymnasium suddenly dimmed, and a trapdoor opened at the bottom floor. Smoke billowed out as a man and podium were slowly raised on a platform. Silence and trepidation were the only things to be felt throughout the gym.
The lights flickered on.
"ALL RIGHT LISTENERS! HOW'S IT HANGING?!"
The boisterous voice of Pro Hero Present Mic vibrated around the gym, as the man expectantly waited for some feedback. Downtrodden, as no one was giving him anything, he was about to move on.
Except when someone did give him something. A little listener about midway up the ascending gym desks gave a whoop and cheer. Looking a little more intently, he saw the boy had vibrant green hair and was wearing sunglasses. Inside. In a, all things considered, poorly lit room.
Eh, who was he to judge. He also had a pair of shades on too.
Wait, was that the one Shouta was training? Pushing the thought to the back of his head, he started his performance.
"THAT'S RIGHT, LITTLE LISTENER, I'M GLAD TO BE HERE!"
From there on out, Present Mic's day was just a little bit better.
Going over how the practicals were to work, everything was going smoothly as he explained the point system for the faux mechanical villains. That is, it was, until a bespectacled boy stood up and demanded answers on the Zero Pointer.
Kid, chill, he was getting there.
Thanking the "enthusiastic" boy, he went over the final boss of their little exams, an obstacle if you will. No one since All Might had even thought of trying to take the thing down, and he didn't blame 'em.
That thing was downright terrifying face to face.
Finishing up his explanation with a flourish, the gymnasium lit up fully, and he told the kids that they were given a letter along with their desk placements. Depending on the letter, that would be the exit they would leave from to their testing site.
Izuku and Katsuki looked at each other, and grinned. So it seemed they wouldn't be sharing testing areas. Fine by them, that just meant they would be able to freely score points without worry of the other.
Saying a quick goodbye in their own way, the both left for their exits, which led to buses that would take them to their testing sites.
(line break pepperoni)
Izuku exited his bus after a fifteen minute drive to their site, in which he'd managed to be placed in Testing Site D. It took a minute for the student hopefuls to get off the bus, and when they did, they started prepping for the test.
Izuku himself just started with some light stretching, and took off his sweatshirt, revealing a black tank top underneath.
He went unaware of the looks some of the girls were giving him.
Setting the clothing down, he made a mental note to grab that before he left, just so he didn't forget it.
In a matter of minutes, Present Mic's voice sounded over an intercom system the school had apparently had installed.
The people who funded this school were made of money, he swore.
"LONG TIME, NO LISTEN, CONTESTANTS! YOUR TRIAL IS GOING TO START…
NOW! GO GO GO!"
Now, an average person, like the people standing around him, would've been stunned for a moment, before gathering themselves and running off into the faux city.
Izuku, if you hadn't noticed, is anything but normal.
Keeping his hands in his pockets, he used his quirk to rocket himself towards the gate. If the kids hadn't already snapped out on their own, he sure as hell did it for them.
He landed at the gate in only a couple of seconds, a good 100 meters from where they started, and leisurely walked in, and immediately drawing a horde of Villain-Bots. Taking a look, he counted three 1-Pointers, two 2-Pointers, and a 3-Pointer. Grinning lazily, he just motioned his hand downwards, and all the bots crumpled under the pressure of his Infinity. Yawning slightly, and cracking his neck, he walked through the town, leaving a trail bots in his wake.
(line break pepperonis)
Iida Tenya was a boy of a strict morals, one that tried to keep everything under order. Of course he had to, with him being a heir of the Ingenium name, and his brothers penchant of being a jokester, he was the one tasked to keep order.
Imagine his surprise when he finally managed to make it to the faux city, ahead of nearly every one of his competitors, the greenette non-withstanding, that he saw nearly ten of the fake villains crushed, seemingly from the immense weight.
Dashing further into the city, he just saw a trail of carnage, and the greenette casually walking through the city, seemingly without a care in the world. Watching further, he saw a bot dash towards his fellow competitor, and when the kid didn't react, he started to dash forward.
Imagine his shock when the bot stopped just before Izuku, like it had hit an invisible wall.
His shock deepened when he saw the boy raise his hand, and then let it fall like all the energy left the limb.
The bot was flattened like a soda can. There was no resistance to the act, either. It was like the weight of the world slammed onto the shoulders of the robot.
Iida had to snap out of his shock. He needed points.
For his parents, for his brother.
He needed to pass.
(line break pepperonis)
Izuku continued to stroll through fake city, taking down bots as they came. He reckoned he'd earned himself around sixty points as it stands, a number that wasn't to bad.
He'd heard the voice of Present Mic, signaling that there were only two minutes left. More than enough time to get another twenty or so points.
That is, until he felt the thundering.
The towering giant, who's shadow reached across the entire fake city.
So that was the 0-Pointer, huh? Really pulling out all the stops for a group of teenagers. And did they really have four of these, on for each testing site? The logistics here doesn't make sense here.
Well, he came here to win, not to tussle with a colossus.
At least, that was the plan.
As he calmly strolled away amid the panicking teenagers, when he heard a noise.
It was a scream.
He came here to learn heroism, right?
Might as well get a head start.
(line break pepperonis)
Uraraka Ochako was having, all things considered, a great day. She'd done well on the test for U.A., and had been doing pretty ok in the practical. She'd scored around thirty five points, and she was proud of that.
Then this gosh darn 0-Pointer had to make an entrance right where she had been dealing with, probably, her last robot.
Karma sucked sometimes, y'know?
Now here she was, somewhat crushed under a slab of concrete. Good thing she had some supporting pillars keeping the thing up for a moment.
Hopefully this entire thing ended before she got crushed.
U.A. hasn't killed anyone yet, right?
Right?
(line break pepperonis)
Izuku appeared before Ochako like an angel, if that angel was wearing chucks. The first thing the greenette did was lift the concrete off of Ochako using Infinity. She gasped, finally able to take a deep breath of ever precious oxygen. She gave a thankful look towards her savior, who was looking at their towering enemy.
Izuku noted that the 0-Pointer was getting rather close to him and the girl. Looking over at her, his sunglasses without even a speck of dust, and held out his hand.
Ochako took the hint, and grabbed his hand. He hoisted her up, grabbing her hip to stabilize her, before looking at the 0-Pointer.
"Hey, wanna see something cool?"
(line break pepperonis)
Aizawa Shouta had his screen focused on one potential student, and by the looks of it, the problem child was a shoe in for the Heroics Course. He smiled under his Capture Weapon, amazed by the speed his student was taking out bots.
His smiled grew even wider when he saw him not run from, but towards the 0-Pointer. He really had the chops to be a Hero, huh? Charging into danger like that to save someone. It was almost poetic.
His smile, while unnoticed by a majority of the Heroes in the room, except for one. Toshinori Yagi peeked at the long haired mans screen, smiling ever so slightly. He recognized those eyes, and the hair that accompanied them. If he remembered correctly, the kid's name was Midoriya Izuku, and he was a pretty good kid.
Funny, if anything.
And it seemed like he had the true heart of a Hero. Toshinori scooted ever so slightly in his seat, wondering how the bespectacled boy would take care of the problem shown before him.
(line break pepperonis)
Izuku smiled comfortingly at the girl in his arms, and for the most part, it worked. Worked as well as it could, when a ten story behemoth was closing in on them rather quickly, of course.
For his part, Izuku wasn't worried at all. Actually, he was interested.
How much damage would one of his new Super Moves do to this metal rust bucket?
"Hey, girly, what do you think happens when you touch Infinity?"
Uraraka looked up, confused, even more so when Izuku just held up his left pointer finger. The world went dim as a pinpoint, no larger than a marble, of red energy appeared over said finger. It swirled, pulsating, causing the world to to warp around them as reality shifted to compensate.
"Cursed Technique Reversal: Red."
It came out as a whisper, but thundered louder than anything else in the world at that moment.
Izuku flung his finger out towards the colossus, the orb flying towards its target.
The earth went quiet at that moment, as if preparing for a world-changing event.
Then came a roaring sound, as the metal of the 0-Pointer crushed in on itself, unable to withstand the weight of the Infinity presented before it.
As well is in it. It was presented in it, too.
The behemoth stopped, the top half of its body no longer in existence, having been blown away by Izuku's technique. Uraraka stared in awe of what happened, but was snapped out of it when she heard Present Mic declare the tests over. Sighing in relief, she collapsed next to Izuku, who kneeled down next to her.
"Hey, by the way, I'm Izuku."
