Chapter 2: All Aboard the Friendship Train
XXXXXX
"Are you sure you have everything? Clothes? School supplies? Underwear?"
It was all Seth could do to not just throw his hands up in exasperation and bail right then and there.
"Yes, mom," he groaned with the growing temptation to slam his head against the nearby brick wall.
He, Kendra, and Bracken were standing outside of King's Cross Train Station in London where multiple people were walking in and out of its doors and giving the trio a weird look. Not that he could blame them cause what kind of normal person would be lugging a cart with a giant trunk, a brown knapsack, and a freaking owl cage containing a small black owl giving all gawkers the stink eye?
"I just want to make sure you're fully prepared," Kendra said, frowning in disapproval at his attitude though she's wringing her hands in unspoken anxiety. "We may just be a magic portal away but the rules are completely different in the wizard world compared to the preserves."
"I know you're worried, sis, but I'll be fine," he calmly and uncharacteristically reassured. "I'm not that same 11 year old boy who thought rules were only created to be broken no matter the consequences."
She smiled wryly at him. "Who are you and what have you done to my heart attack inducing imp of a little brother?"
He shrugged and gave her a goofy grin. "He grew up into a 21 year old in an 11 year old's body who understands the consequences and only bends the rules whenever he feels it's appropriate."
Then she pulled him into a tight hug that probably cracked a few ribs if the pain in his side was any indication. "I'm gonna miss having you around Fablehaven. Life isn't quite as...boring."
Seth didn't respond and wrapped his arms around her tighter to the point where he probably cracked a few of her ribs as well. The two only separated when Bracken pointedly cleared his throat. He'd been the awkward bystander the entire time and the only one to notice all the stares they were getting.
"Perhaps we should move this inside? I have a feeling if we linger any longer someone might call the police on us," he said while pointedly looking at the people who've stopped to stare at the trio.
Kendra blushed in embarrassment while Seth chuckled. She quickly ushered them all inside without another word and they set about looking for the Hogwarts Express platform. Without asking any of the assistants for help of course.
Cause what use was there getting sent to the loony bin trying to find a goddamn magic train platform in an ordinary train station that's not crazy enough to have freaking fractions with their platform numbers. Like, seriously? Platform nine and three quarters?
These wizards were really leaning into the whole whimsical aspect of magic. Sounded like a running theme for them to make things more complicated than they had to be just for the sake of making it 'special.'
Look, don't get him wrong. He would always be amazed by magic no matter what because there was always something new to learn, to see, to explore, and to discover. But even he got tired when a particular brand of magic never changed in execution or structure. It got boring and magic should never be boring. That was like a cardinal sin or something.
At least the preserves were never boring. There was always something new going on when magical creatures were involved and magically inclined people could get predictable because they were still people after all, just with a few extra things to note.
After spending a whole twenty minutes wandering a never ending circuit around platforms 8, 9, and 10, the trio took to tapping the walls around platform 9 despite the looks they were getting from their actions.
Actually, now that Seth was paying more attention, the looks were decreasing the closer they were to platform 9. Must be some kind of disassociation or 'notice me not' enchantment going on here. So that must mean they were in the right area but where the hell was the platform?
Eventually, through sheer luck, Bracken placed a hand against one of the pillars on platform 9, leaned onto it and fell through the wall as a result.
Seth and Kendra both blinked at the spot where he disappeared. They turned to each other to share a look that goes 'A magic wall in the middle of a high traffic train station? That makes perfect sense...Freaking wizards and their freaking 'whimsical' ways.'
With an air of mutual exasperation, the Sorenson siblings marched through the wall and met up with Bracken who had been standing there like a lost child waiting for their mother to find them. Soon the trio was pushing through crowds of people in a station that had a more antiquated feel compared to the modern renovations of the non-magical train station.
Seemed to be another running theme going on with these magical, no, wizard worlds. Cause calling these human beings who wave a stick around and bam, magic happens, 'magical people' felt wrong, especially since the magical people he'd come to know were the creatures associated with the preserves.
Eventually, they reached a train car with no crowds gathered outside and Bracken helped him unload his cart. With his trunk beside him, the knapsack over his shoulder, and Kendra the Owl's cage in hand, Seth shared a goodbye with his sister and best friend.
"Take care of yourself alright?" Kendra said as she gave him another rib cracking hug, "And if you're going to break the rules, cause I know you will no matter how many times I tell you not to, try not to get caught. I'm sure you don't want to get the whole 'I told you so' spiel when you come back home after getting expelled on your first day."
"Don't worry sis, I'm a shadow charmer," he reassured with a cheeky grin, "Charming my way out of trouble is basically my specialty."
"Okay, smart guy," she snarked back with a smile, "Just make sure to send letters whenever you can. Warren and Dale will try to find a way to get you a cell phone that's not disrupted by wizard's magic."
Seth nodded gratefully and removed himself from Kendra's hold to give Bracken a bro hug.
"I have nothing to add besides stay safe and don't die," Bracken offered with a blinding smile that highlighted how white and shiny his perfect teeth were. Goddamn unicorn genetics.
"I'll do my best but no promises," he said as he reluctantly released his hold on Bracken.
The two shared a fist bump before a whistle rang out, warning everyone on the platform that the train would be departing from the platform soon. Seth dragged his trunk on board and shared a final wave goodbye to Kendra and Bracken just as the door closed.
He watched as the two slowly shrank into the distance the further the train pulled away from the station until finally, there was only green countryside as far as the eye could see. And then he was stuck lugging his trunk and stuff down the hall, peering through each compartment window to find one that was empty or at least mostly empty with someone who wouldn't be offended by his mere presence.
Fortunately, he soon found a compartment with a lonely looking Harry gazing longingly out the window at the passing landscape.
"Hey there Harry!" Seth called out as he slammed the compartment door open like the dramatic little shit he was, "It's a mighty fine coincidence running into you in the only mostly empty compartment out of the hundreds I must've passed on my way here!"
Harry startled at his sudden appearance, almost falling off the seat in a comical fashion before smiling with shoulders slumped in relief. "Seth! You're here!"
Seth shuffled into the compartment and shoved his trunk to the storage space above. "Course I'm here buddy! I promised to meetcha on the way to Hogwarts and I always keep my promises. Mostly. Sometimes. Depending on the circumstances and context."
Harry chuckled in response, looking like a happy little bean despite the baggy clothes and general look of abused, malnourished child that Seth didn't notice until now. He started formulating plans in his mind to get some meat on those bones and possibly an invitation to Fablehaven during holiday breaks where his Grandma was sure to pamper the boy within an inch of his life.
Grandma Sorenson was a truly fearsome woman who somehow managed to weaponize her grandmotherly love and freshly baked apple pies.
Seth plopped down into the seat across from Harry and started swinging his legs about like a little kid. "You excited about the whole magic school thing?"
Harry nodded enthusiastically. "Yeah! I never thought something like Hogwarts could exist in real life."
"Never say never buddy," Seth grinned, snickering at his little joke.
"Well now that I know magic exists I guess I won't be from here on out," Harry agreed, joke going completely over his head as he smiled self-deprecatingly, "I always thought I was just another ordinary boy, nothing special about me at all except for being a charity case that was lucky enough to be taken in instead of dead on the streets as my aunt and uncle would say."
Seth frowned, not liking the confirmation of his earlier observation. "Well that's just rude. No family member should be treating you like that at all. I mean I've had aunts and uncles I don't like but that's just cause they're idiots not because they actually hate me for being alive."
"Oh no, no, no! I didn't mean that. My aunt and uncle are really lovely people. They do feed me as long as I cook which is only fair. They gave me a place to sleep even though it's rather small and I have plenty of clothes to wear," Harry tried to protest as he smiled tightly and gestured at his extremely baggy clothes.
"Oh yeah, you're definitely very convincing," Seth deadpanned, "Keep talking and maybe I won't call social services or just outright kidnap you from your terrible relatives."
"Why don't we talk about something else?" Harry said, changing the topic with all the subtlety of a brick to the face, "Like why you're here? Aren't you an American? I may be new to this but I thought if Britain had its own magical school, wouldn't America too?"
Seth gave Harry a look that said the conversation was definitely not over but he'll willingly table it for now. "Yeah, there's an American school. It's called Ilvermorny or something like that. As for why I'm here. Legal issues apparently."
"Legal issues? Is that even possible? Do wizards have lawyers and a court or something?" Harry asked, genuinely curious.
"Eh, hell if I know. The only thing I know is that they didn't wanna deal with people involved with the Magical Preserves cause we're our own separate community that wizards apparently don't like cause we're too progressive or something like that?" Seth tried to explain with a 'what can you do' shrug, "I don't know. Details and shit like that are more my sister's thing. I just go around making friends and stabbing things."
Harry opened his mouth to ask another question when the door to their compartment suddenly opened and a young boy with fire red hair and very worn hand me down clothes greeted them with a sheepish expression.
"Hello," the boy mumbled while shuffling his feet nervously, "Do you mind if I join you? All the other compartments were full and the ones that weren't were..."
"Say no more, I get what you mean," Seth interrupted before the boy could implode from all the insecurity issues he undoubtedly had cause no one shuffled around like that unless they were extremely shy or extremely insecure. And given that he actually spoke to two random strangers, he was probably not the former.
The boy smiled gratefully and shuffled into the compartment. Seth and Harry helped him store his trunk and he sat down next to Harry.
"My name's Ron, Ron Weasley," the red head said, "What's yours?"
"I'm Seth Sorenson," Seth said, "And before you say something about me being an American heading to a British school, let's just say legal issues and leave it at that."
Ron nodded slowly, not really understanding but also not willing to push. He turned to Harry who smiled shyly.
"My name's Harry, Harry Potter-"
"No way! You're Harry Potter?" Ron exclaimed, making Harry shrink and Seth jump in surprise. Ron smiled sheepishly in response. "Sorry about that. It's just...it's true then? You're really the Harry Potter?"
"Yes?" Harry responded, looking as confused as Seth was feeling.
"I thought Fred and George were just joking but I guess here you are. Then does that mean you have the...the..." Ron pointed at his forehead and whispered, "The scar?"
Harry wordlessly nodded and lifted his hair up to show a lightning bolt shaped scar that had Ron grinning like an idiot and Seth still as confused as ever.
"That's wicked!" Ron exclaimed, bursting at the seams in excitement.
Harry gave a small, unsure smile in response. "So I take it the red haired twins I ran into earlier were your brothers? Is your whole family magical?"
Ron nodded. "Yeah, though mum has a second cousin who's an accountant. We don't talk about him though. What's your family like?"
"Let's just say his aunt and uncle are pieces of shit that deserve to be arrested and leave it at that," Seth answered for him.
Harry nodded apathetically. "My cousin's not so bad but I wish I had two magical older brothers."
"Try five," Ron mumbled petulantly, "I've got too much to live up to what with Bill being head boy, Charlie being the Quidditch team captain, Percy being a prefect, and Fred and George being rather brilliant even though their grades are horrible."
And that was where the insecurity issues stemmed from. While he didn't have five older siblings, Seth could understand the pressures from having even just a single perfect older sibling. "I totally understand how you feel," he said, "I've got an older sister who's perfect in literally every way. It was a lot of pressure trying to live up to the same expectations."
"Right?" Ron said, nodding vigorously in understanding.
"But that just made me more determined to separate myself from her shadow," Seth continued. "I may never live up to the same expectations but that's because we're two completely different people and everyone should remember that. Cause honestly, who needs two goody two shoes lecturing you about proper behavior. I'll do things my own way, thank you very much. So don't let others get you down about your brothers. You should live your own life at your own pace and not anyone else's."
Ron and Harry both gaped at him in surprise. He frowned at their reactions. "What? Was it something I said?"
"You're surprisingly wise and mature for an 11 year old boy, Seth," Harry said.
Seth smiled slyly. "What can I say? I'm a 21 year old in an 11 year old's body. Shit happens when you grow up and you either learn from it or you die."
Harry and Ron both furrowed their brows in confusion, not knowing if Seth was being serious or just yanking their chain.
"So can anyone explain to me what the deal is with the whole 'Harry Potter' scar thing?" Seth asked, "Unless Harry's some sort of child star or son of a celebrity, I can't understand how he's famous from having a specifically shaped scar."
"I'd like to know as well," Harry confessed, hands wringing together in a nervous tick, "No one ever told me the full story. Just that my parents died protecting me from an evil wizard and that's how I got the scar."
"Well it's a bit more than that. You see, Harry is the first and only person known to survive the killing curse," Ron explained, "And he also managed to defeat You Know Who when he was just a baby."
Seth deadpanned. "While that's impressive and all, who the hell is You Know Who? Cause I definitely do not know who that you is."
Ron fidgeted, reluctant and almost scared to respond. Finally he leaned forward and softly whispered, "Voldemort." Then he quickly leaned back and shuddered as if he just spoke a curse word instead of a really lame ass name.
Harry also didn't look as impressed by the name and was about to voice as much when the compartment door suddenly opened to reveal a kind, portly woman with a trolley full of treats and snacks.
"Anything from the trolley, dears?" she asked sweetly.
"Don't mind if I do," Seth said gleefully as he eyed all of the different confectionary treats that American candy stores definitely wouldn't carry.
He bought three of each thing with the coins he still had leftover and divvied it up among them all. Ron smiled gratefully at him and Harry looked at him as if he'd given him a Christmas and Birthday present all wrapped up into one. Then Harry bought a bunch of the chocolate treats as repayment that Seth only accepted if Harry took his fair share as well.
The three boys gleefully enjoyed the snacks, Seth getting a particular kick out of the every flavor beans while Harry gladly started his own card collection at Ron's insistence.
"So which house do you think you two will be going to?" Ron asked around a mouthful of cauldron cake. "I know I'll be in Gryffindor because every Weasley in my family's been one."
"House? Gryffindor?" Harry asked, confused as he looked up from his new Dumbledore trading card.
"From what I read in Hogwarts: A History, Gryffindor is the house of the brave and daring, Hufflepuff is the house of the hardworking and loyal, Ravenclaw is the house of curious and witty, and Slytherin is the house of the cunning and ambitious," Seth explained.
The other two boys stared at him. "What?" he asked, crossing his arms defensively, "My sister made me read the book. She was all like," he pitched his voice up into a poor imitation of Kendra, "You need to know what you're getting into Seth cause I won't be there to bail you out of any trouble you get into so read all these books cause they could save your life some day and blah, blah, blah."
He scoffed. "Honestly, ye of little faith. I can get out of trouble without the help of a book thank you very much."
Harry chuckled.
"Seth's somewhat right," Ron nodded in agreement, "From what I know, Gryffindor is the best house you can be in, Hufflepuff is full of pushovers, Ravenclaw are all nerds and bookworms, and Slytherin is the worst house. It's full of slimy snakes and is just an evil house."
Seth frowned at that clearly biased assessment. "Well that's just rude. And what do you mean evil house? I highly doubt a house in a school is just evil. There's no way the teachers would leave it be if that's true. Otherwise, they'd be really bad teachers."
Ron shrugged. "Every single wizard who comes out of Slytherin has gone dark."
"And why's that?" Seth asked, crossing his arms, "Do the teachers teach them to be evil? Is there like a house caretaker that teaches them to be evil?"
"No. It's just a fact that all Slytherins are evil," Ron responded with a frown, "Everyone knows that."
"Just because everyone says it's a fact doesn't actually mean it is one. And besides, there is no way 100 percent of the people who go into a house all come out evil unless there are a bunch of factors that make it so," Seth calmly countered, "And if you want to say they're evil because they're cunning or ambitious, news flash, anyone can be cunning and ambitious but not all of them are evil."
"Like businessmen!" Harry helpfully offered, "Everyone thinks businessmen are evil but they're just really good at their jobs."
"Exactly," Seth nodded in agreement. "I bet you there are a bunch of Slytherins who are actually good people but because everyone treats them like it's inevitable that they're going to become evil that they either keep fighting to prove them wrong or just give up and 'become evil'. Then everyone pats themselves on the back for being right all along even though they're the reason why those Slytherins became evil in the first place."
"Well...well...I" Ron tried to argue, brow furrowing from the effort.
"No one is born evil," Seth declared with finality, "Yes, some people may be inclined towards evil but no one is ever born evil. They can only be made evil by the environment that nurtures them, the friends that they surround themselves with, and the choices that they make. Anyone who says otherwise is just trying to make themselves feel good by putting others down."
Ron shut his mouth with an audible click as his face turned red. "You're a bloody Slytherin aren't you," he hissed, defaulting to grade school insults, "Trying to defend your kind just like all the other pure blooded gits."
Seth rolled his eyes. "I'm technically a muggle born and a full-blooded American, genius," he retorted, "I grew up with the Martin Luther King Jr. speech going I have a dream that my kids will one day live in a nation where they're not judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character."
Harry made a sound of recognition at the quote reference to which Seth nodded appreciatively towards him. "While Slytherins may not be a separate race, the way you treat them makes it seem as though you judge everyone in that house as if they were all cut from the same cloth and then refuse to get to know them better."
Ron sank down in his seat, chastised and looking like a dog who just got spanked too hard for chewing on something they shouldn't have.
Seth sighed. "Look, I'm not defending all Slytherins since there was enough of a pattern to establish it as the 'evil' house and I'm not asking you to make nice with them either cause clearly there's some history," he said before giving Ron a pointed look, "But by continuing to call them evil without getting to know any of them, you're just pushing good wizards into choosing evil as their only choice. So just...think about it and find a way to do better."
Ron grumbled petulantly but he did nod hesitantly in agreement. An awkward silence settled between the three boys with a clear tension between Ron and Seth while Harry nervously fiddled with a chocolate frog case, wondering if he should say something or not.
None of them spot the blonde haired figure withdrawing their hand from the compartment door and quickly slipping away back down the hall where they came from, a conflicted expression on their face.
Suddenly the compartment door suddenly opened again, breaking the silence as the three boys sat up and snapped their heads towards the intruder.
A young girl with a bushy mane of hair, already dressed in school robes, and carrying a demeanor that reminded Seth heavily of his sister back when she was still in her do-gooder/know-it-all/fun police phase. Scratch that, his sister was still like that but now she actually had the skills and knowledge to back it all up.
"Have you seen a toad?" the girl asked, getting right to the point, "A boy named Neville lost his and I'm helping him look for it."
The boys exchanged glances before turning back to her and shaking their heads.
"Nope, no toad here," Seth answered.
The girl perked up. She looked at Seth, intrigued. "That accent...are you an American?" she asked before rapid firing questions, "Are you an exchange student? I didn't know that Hogwarts had any exchange program in place unless it wasn't in Hogwarts: A History. Or were you a British born American and you have a British citizenship instead of an American one, which explains why you're attending Hogwarts instead of the American Wizarding School of Ilvermorny? Wha-"
Seth held a hand up to stop the girl from choking due to lack of air. The girl blushed in embarrassment. "Oh dear, I did it again. I'm terribly sorry. I'm just naturally curious I guess and I never knew magic existed before so I just want to know everything I can and-"
He cleared his throat, which prompted her blush to grow darker. "Sorry, I'm still doing it aren't I?"
"Hey it's all good," Seth reassured her with a wide grin, "Magic's pretty amazing so I can hardly blame anyone for being curious about it. I know I was when I first found out about it."
The girl smiled, thankful for his reassurance, then stuck her hand out for a shake. "My name is Hermione Granger. And you are?"
"Seth Sorenson," he said, shaking her hand before letting go to point at the other boys. "The red head there is Ron Weasley," Ron gave her a polite nod, "And the black hair spectacles is Harry Potter."
Harry gave her a little wave only to be the target of the next bombardment of questions.
"You're Harry Potter? Does that mean you have the scar and everything? What was it like getting it? Do you know what kind of magic you used against He Who Must Not Be Named?" Hermione asked eagerly, "I read all about you in my supplemental reading of The Rise and Fall of the Dark Arts and Great Wizarding Events of the Twentieth Century!"
Harry blushed under the sudden attention. He looked off to the side and mumbled, "Yes, I am and yes, I do. And no, I don't remember anything besides a flash of green light and a scream."
His answer had Hermione snapping her mouth shut and blushing again. "Oh I'm so sorry. That was really insensitive of me. I apologize."
"S'okay," Harry mumbled in response.
"Okay seriously, what is up with the hype around Harry?" Seth asked, crossing his arms with a frown.
Both Hermione and Ron frowned at him. "Well he's considered one of the most famous and powerful wizards of our generation because of what he did when he was just a baby," Hermione explained as Ron nodded along vigorously, "Shouldn't that be explanation enough?"
Seth rolled his eyes. "Yeah, I get that he survived some terrible curse as a baby and then defeated an evil wizard but have none of you heard the phrase 'where there's a will, there's a way?' Plus, magic is extremely unpredictable no matter how much you study it. There's always some new thing it can do when you least expect it."
"You know, you never did answer why you, an American I'm assuming, are here heading off to Hogwarts instead of Ilvermorny," Hermione remarked, "Maybe the reason why you don't understand the significance is because you're from a different country?"
Ron and Harry looked to Seth, eager for an answer. He rolled his eyes again.
"Oh, I totally get the significance. It's an impressive show of magic that Harry was able to survive a death curse and kill a bad guy in his baby years," Seth accepted readily, "However, there were more pressing issues to worry about involving the Preserves so no one had any shits to give over an evil British wizard with a name that sounds like some fancy moldy cheese."
Harry snickered at the jab at Voldemort's name while Ron gaped at him in horror.
"Preserves?" Hermione asked, highly intrigued, "Do you mean the dragon preserves?"
Seth scoffed at the mention of those horrible excuses for a magical sanctuary. "Yeah, no," he bluntly stated.
Hermione opened her mouth to ask more questions when the train sounded off a succession of three whistles. "Oh! Are we already almost there?" she asked as she glanced out the window.
The boys followed her example and sure enough, there was a small structure in the far, far distance growing closer with each passing minute as the setting sun provided a highlighting backdrop.
"I better get back to finding Neville's toad before we arrive," she said as she moved to exit the compartment, "You all should dress in your robes as well. See you later!"
She then left the compartment, closing the door behind her with a click as she rushed down the hallway looking for a toad that just didn't want to be found.
"Well," Seth said, blinking at her sudden departure.
"She was certainly bossy," Ron sourly remarked, "I hope I don't end up in the same house as her."
Harry snorted at that.
"You shouldn't have said that," Seth said with a wry smile, "You probably just jinxed yourself. She'll be in the same house as you for sure now."
Ron groaned and Harry dissolved into laughter which prompted a mini shoving match full of rowdy laughter as the express train pulled closer and closer to Hogwarts.
And scene! If you guys thought a good portion of this chapter was full of criticism at the house system and its features you would be correct. I love Harry Potter and will always wish I could read it for the first time all over again but I do have many criticisms at JK Rowling's initial world building. Cause if you remove all of the extra books and only focus on the main seven, world building for the Wizarding World is actually pretty...lacking. Especially for the houses.
We never learn anything about the houses and their values, only about certain key people. Like the most we get for Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw are a few minor characters, one of whom dies and the other who deserves more screen time in general. And for Slytherin, I don't like how it's treated as the "evil house" and is never really given a chance at redemption. Were there seriously no Slytherins who weren't pure bloods or didn't act like assholes to everyone? And don't give me the whole peer pressure argument because there are people who exist who fight against peer pressure to do their own thing and are better and stronger for it.
Also, I know that the initial audience for the series was kids before the whole thing blew up, okay? But it's also really damaging to write about kids not standing up to bullies or bullies being bullies because they're racist pieces of shit or because they're "cunning and ambitious." Do you know how many times being cunning helped me get out of tough situations and how ambitions are what fuel my motivation to do anything? I may be a Gryffinclaw but I don't have to be a Slytherin to know that cunning and ambition are important traits that should be cultivated and not villainized.
That's going to be one of the key things I'll be taking a crack at. How would the series change and expand if a grown up, de-aged Seth, who's learned from his mistakes and grown for the better while still retaining his core essence as an explorer and adventurer, were to enter the mix. He's fought in wars, gone on quests, and understands how the world is full of shades of grey, especially as a Shadow Charmer who were all thought to be inherently evil.
Also, if he seems OOC, please remember that he's had a decade of growing up in an extraordinary but still dangerous environment and this is fanfiction where I can write whatever the hell I want.
So yeah, sorry about the ranting and shit but the world building and portrayal of the houses will always be my number one gripe about the Harry Potter series no matter how much I love it. Regardless, I hope you guys enjoyed the chapter. Until next time!
