Snowflakes

They fell softly at first; then the pace quickened, covering the compound in a white carpet. The ground glistened as the searchlights moved back and forth.

The dogs whined; they wanted out of their pens. The guards obliged. Soon, prisoners left their drafty huts. The snow was fluffy-not conducive to fights or building snowmen. Allies and Germans alike smiled as they watched the dogs cavort; their little paw-prints leaving markers across the compound.

Men kicked up clouds of frozen precipitation as they wandered through the winter wonderland. The war paused as they admired the beauty of the moment.
