Ever since the prison became the community it is today, Daryl has gone on pretty much every run and Kayla knew how capable he was, but she worried immensely for him. How could she not? The world was getting more and more dangerous everyday whether it was the population of walkers increasing or the population of people that weren't murderers decreasing. Daryl never told Kayla about close calls out on runs because he knew she worried so he figured as long as he came back alive and unharmed with supplies, there was nothing to tell other than it was a success.

When Daryl left, Kayla helped down at the fences with Karen, David, Alex, and the others. It was always a work-out with all the jamming pipes and knives through walkers' skulls especially in the heat, but the fact that it was a form of bonding for Alex and Kayla really showed how far gone the world was. They were normally at the fences until there were barely any walkers left or none at all so it left time to talk with the others. Over the months Alex and Kayla's relationship has grown stronger and Alex made some major changes to himself. He was always helping out around the prison with chores or going on a run every now and then, but didn't like leaving Kayla to worry for both him and Daryl. Plus, what would happen if they both didn't come back? Either way Kayla saw a different man in her father, inside and out. With all the work he's done the past few months, he has built up some muscle and with summer in swing, his skin was tanner. He also buzzed his hair, but it was beginning to grow back. Overall he was a new person and Kayla was glad she finally got to have the father daughter relation she always dreamt about…even if they were killing the walking dead.

Fence work was never finished, but after a while everyone was relieved from their work to rest and another group of fence cleaners came in to take over of there were still too many walkers. Daryl and the others had already been gone for a while so Kayla decided to go and shower and rest until he got back. She only got to the Cell Block C entrance before Maggie came over to her. "Hey." She said. "Gotta minute?"

"Well I actually have a hair appointment in a few minutes but I can squeeze you in." Kayla teased, causing Maggie to chuckle.

"But I really need to talk to you." Maggie replied.

"About what?"

"Think we could talk in the infirmary?"

Kayla noticed Maggie's facial expression and simply nodded before leading her to the infirmary.

When they got to the infirmary Maggie sat on the examination tables and Maggie closed the door. "What's up?" Kayla asked, sitting in her chair. Maggie looked at her with a worried expression. "I'm late." She said. Kayla knew what that meant and sat up straight. "How many days?" Kayla asked.

"Today marks a week." Maggie answered.

Kayla stood up and went over to the one drawer and pulled a key out of it. She then went over to the one cabinet and unlocked it. "This cabinet was locked when we got here." Kayla explained. "It was where they store heavy painkillers and prescription medication. I use it to store some other things." She opened the cabinet, revealing an emergency stash of medical supplies in case they ran out and couldn't find more on a run…and there were also a few pregnancy tests. She pulled one out and locked the cabinet up again and sat back down. "I picked these up on the run I went on a few weeks ago. No one but me knows they're here." Kayla told Maggie.

"How accurate are they?" Maggie asked.

"Lucky for us they were the most recommended before the world ended." Kayla replied, handing her the box. "Lucky for you if it's been a week you'll get more accurate results." She went over and opened the door that led into the tiny bathroom. "I'm here for you Maggie." She told her. Maggie nodded and went into the bathroom, closing the door behind her. Kayla leaned against the counted and began to bite her nails. What if it was positive? The only thing Kayla could think of is what happened to Lori, but then again that was so long ago. Look at where they were now. With her, Caleb, and Hershel…well whether Maggie's father wanted to be up close and personal with that part of his daughter Kayla didn't know…anyway Kayla couldn't let anything happen to Maggie. She loved her like a sister and more importantly she was Glenn's wife.

A few minutes passed before Maggie came out with closed eyes and handed her the pregnancy test. "I can't." she said. "I can't look." Kayla took the test from her and looked at the test. She let out a breath and smiled. It was negative. "You're not pregnant." She reported. Maggie opened her eyes and looked at the test herself. "Oh thank God." She exhaled. She looked at Kayla. "Thank you." She said.

"It's what I do." Kayla replied.

Maggie hugged Kayla and Kayla returned the gesture. After a few moments, Maggie pulled away. "I gotta go help my dad and see Beth. Thank you so much Kayla." She told Kayla as she stepped out. "Anytime." Kayla called after her. "Even though I thought I was done with pregnancy scares when I left that free clinic…" she added under her breath before checking the time. It was getting to be the late afternoon and Kayla still reeked of sweat and walker blood. She left the infirmary and headed towards the showers in Cell Block C.

OOOOO

It wasn't long until Kayla was back in her and Daryl's cell feeling clean from her shower and her clean clothes. She was reading The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo when her dad stopped by. "Just came to say goodnight." He said, stepping into the cell. Kayla smiled and bookmarked her page before getting up. She smiled and hugged him, his arms wrapping around her in response. Kayla kissed his cheek and pulled away. "They just got back." Alex told her. "They're putting supplies away now." Kayla smiled at the thought of Daryl. "I'll see you for breakfast." She told her dad. He nodded and then went towards his own cell.

Kayla knew Daryl was safe and sat back down on the bed to wait for him. The sun had already sunk below the horizon by the time he got back. Kayla smiled at him when he got into the cell, but she could tell something was wrong by his facial expression. "What is it?" she asked.

"Zack…he didn't make it." Daryl said, sitting on the bed. Kayla sat up and put her hands on his shoulder, pressing her lips to the one. She rubbed his arm as he sat there and hear him exhale. "He was helping to save Bob…and he got bit." He said.

"You know these things happen." Kayla told him. "And you can't prevent them all the time."

"I know…" Daryl agreed. "But I try."

Kayla picked her head up and looked at the side of his face, brushing some hair out of the way. "I know. You always try." She said. He turned her head to look at her. She gave him a smile and kissed the corner of his mouth. "Is everyone else alright?" she asked. Daryl nodded and the pulled something he had tucked in the side of his pants. "I found this." He said, holding it out. Kayla looked at it and widened her eyes when she saw it was. It was a copy of her all-time favorite book, A Walk To Remember. Kayla was always a diverse reader and loved Nicholas Sparks, and this was her favorite. She took the book from Daryl and opened it, flipping through the pages. "Daryl, I, how did you…a' she couldn't find the words of appreciation.

"I saw it at the store and remembered you sayin' it was your favorite." He told her. She smiled at him before throwing her arms around his neck. "Thank you." She said excitedly, quickly pulling away and looked at the book. "I never thought I'd get to read it again." Daryl kissed her cheek and then stood up to change. Kayla laid back the way she was before and began reading the book. She missed reading this book. Some people had comfort food, she had comfort books.

Kayla was already few pages into it when Daryl came over and kissed her. She smiled and kissed him back, sensing Daryl take the book and set it to the side. She slipped her arms around his neck and pulled him closer to her. He maneuvered his way onto the bed and pulled Kayla with him, wrapping his arms around her. Before it got any more heated, she pulled away and grabbed her book. "I love you, immensely, but I haven't read this book for almost two years." She defended, laying on her side away from Daryl and opening the book. He scooted over to her and kissed her neck and down to her shoulder, feeling the goose bumps on her skin rise. "Daryl." She said through a smile. Daryl put her lips to her temple. "I love you, too." He whispered before laying down to go to sleep.

After reading the first chapter, Kayla turned off the light and rolled over towards Daryl. He was fast asleep and Kayla smiled. She got comfortable in her spot under his arm and he, still asleep, out of instinct wrapped it around her. She rested her head on his chest and closed her eyes, the sound of his heartbeat making her drift off. Kayla may have loved Landon and Jamie's relationship in her book, but her and Daryl's love story was her favorite. And maybe they survived the end of the world, she'd get to write every detail one day.

A/N Sorry for the wait, but I have two other stories I work on and i don't have as much time as I'd like to write fan fiction so I hope you enjoyed this chapter.
