Kayla and the rest of the council were gathered in the library talking about how to handle the new sickness. Although she wasn't a doctor or surgeon, Kayla did work in the emergency room of a hospital and served as a paramedic when needed so she was familiar with different things that went on in hospitals when it came to sicknesses. Most of the time it wasn't all that severe, just a harsh flu strain that was getting a lot of children sick or weak adults and the elderly. But this was different. Patrick and Charlie died in a terrible and painful way. And they got sick and died in a time span of twenty-four hours. How was that possible? Kayla was thinking of different ways they could treat it and prevent it from spreading when someone said her name. "Kayla." Hershel said. She looked at him. "What?" she said. "Sorry, I was just thinking."

"While I go talk to Caleb, why don't you go and take a look at everyone that was in Cell Block D to see if they are showing any symptoms." Hershel told her. "Make sure you wear gloves and a mask."

Kayla nodded and stood up. She left the library where Alex was waiting for her. "Think I could be of assistance?" he asked. "Sure." Kayla said. "I can show you what to look for."

Alex and Kayla went to where they gathered all the people who were in Cell Block D after stopping at the infirmary for supplies, which included gloves and masks. Kayla told Alex what to look for and what questions to ask. Have you been coughing, do you feel feverish, are you experiencing any nausea, etcetera. Kayla started on the kids and Alex started on the parents. The first kid was Lizzy.

"Hi Lizzy." Kayla greeted as she pulled on her gloves and mask. "I am going to ask you a few questions and then look at a few things, is that all right?"

"What kinds of questions?" Lizzie questions.

"The kinds that will tell me whether you could be getting sick."

"What are you going to look at?"

"I am going to time your heart rate, then I am going to look in your eyes, ears, and throat, and check for a temperature."

"Will it hurt?"

"No, not at all."

Lizzie nodded and then Kayla began the examination. She asked Lizzy the questions which she answered openly and then Kayla did the physical examination. She looked at Lizzy's eyes with a flashlight as well as her ears and throat before finally checking if she was feverish. "You seem alright right now." Kayla began. "But if you feel sick at all you come and find me or Dr. S or Hershel, understood?"

"Yes ma'am." Lizzy replied.

Kayla moved through the other kids before getting to her last patient…Jonathan. "Hey John." She greeted. "Mind if I take a look at you to make sure you're okay?" John nodded. "Why are you wearing a mask and gloves?" he asked.

"So I don't get sick." Kayla answered.

"I'm going to get you sick?"

"No, it's just a precaution."

"Okay."

Kayla did the examination and at the end of it, not a lot of people were showing symptoms. Only two or three were showing symptoms which resulted in them being put in Cell Block A immediately to lower the risk of the sickness spreading. Once they were settled in, the other prison members got settled in Cell Block A. Once that was done, Kayla retired outside by the fence enclosing the courtyard. She slid to the ground and pulled her knees into her chest. Something was happening all over again. Kayla thought they were done suffering major losses after the Governor disappeared and they began rebuilding the prison. The fences were more secure and reliable, they had a system and routine, but more people were dying again in high numbers. Tears came to Kayla's eyes from how they lost several children and even more adults. And what made it all worse was now more people were going to die most likely with this sickness going around. Karen and others were already showing symptoms to the illness and it would only get worse. And now Jonathan was an orphan. Both of his parents were gone and now Kayla was all he had.

The sound of footsteps caught Kayla's attention and when she looked up, she saw Alex. "Hi." She said. Alex sat next to her. "Hey Darlin'." He replied. "How you holding up?"

"Alright."

"Come on I know when you aren't telling the truth."

Kayla sighed. "I'm just tired of losing people." She told him. Alex put an arm around her and pulled her into a hug. "We all are." He replied, kissing her head. "But we'll get through this. I know we will."

The father and daughter sat like that for a while. It was comforting and a feeling Kayla liked getting from Alex. After a while, their moment was interrupted by the sound of Maggie's voice calling for them and Rick and Daryl. They got up and looked down at the field to see a large group of walkers trying to get over the fence and the fence was losing the battle. They ran down to the field and met up with Daryl and Rick halfway. They rushed over to the fence and Tyreese, Sasha, and Glenn arrived a few moments later. They all grabbed a weapon off of the fence and began taking out the walkers pushing in on the fence. They began killing as many walkers as they could that were pushing on the fence. Kayla jammed her machete through the walkers' skulls and they fell to the ground dead…well officially dead. When she turned her head to the side, she saw how much anger Rick was letting out. After going months of sticking to farming and tending to keeping the people fed, he was finally letting off some steam.

"Are you seeing this?" Sasha questioned the others as she looked at the ground at half eaten rats. "Was someone feeding these things?"

Before anyone could answer, the fence started to cave in. Everyone pushed against the fence and tried to keep it up while the walkers pushed against it from the other side. "Everybody back!" Daryl yelled. Kayla backed away from the fence, but lost her footing from the force and fell to the ground. Daryl went over and pulled her up, keeping his arm around her waist. "If the fence keeps bending in like that the walkers are coming over it." she said to the others. Rick looked back at his farming area and Kayla saw a light bulb go on in his head. "Daryl get the truck." He said. "I know what to do."

Daryl nodded and went and got the truck started while Rick went to his pig pen and collected his pigs in a wooden box. He put them on the back of the truck and he and Daryl drove out to where all the walkers. Kayla watched him as Rick cut the pigs' legs and threw them into the grass as bait. He did the same for all three pigs and it led the walkers away long enough for the others to fix the fence.

OOOOO

That night, Kayla slept in Cell Block A. She didn't sleep in with everyone who was sick, but right outside on an old mattress she covered with a sheet. Daryl slept with her too on a separate mattress right next to her. After today, Kayla was exhausted. All she wanted to do was fall asleep and that's exactly what she did. But before she did, she reminded herself of what was still good. Daryl was alive. Alex was alive. The others were safe. The prison was secure. It's not all falling apart.
