Kayla spent the next day in Cell Block A helping take care of everyone who was getting sick and it wasn't long before her and Caleb, the only two doctors at the prison other than Hershel and Bob who was a medic in the army, got sick too. Kayla first though she was just feeling hot from being around all the sick people for a full day and being cooped up inside, but she found that she was burning up with a fever. And she was nauseas and experiencing fatigue. Whatever it was…she had it.
Figuring it was the safest idea, Kayla found her way to a cell and laid down. She was sick. And based on the illness's track record, it wouldn't take long for her to die. She covered her face with her hands. This couldn't be happening. She survived Atlanta, the farm, being on the road, the prison, the Governor, walkers, and what most likely would kill her is a bad case of the flu? What about the others? What about Daryl? Oh god Daryl… She loved him so much. What would happen if she died? They have been through hell and back together with everything that had happened and were finally happy. They were married. Even if it wasn't on paper, they had the rings and to her he was her husband and to him she was his wife.
And what about Alex? They had a relationship now and got along. The two spent days together at the fence and eating meals together and were in a good place. Although Kayla never forgave him for the past, she was able to get by it so they could live in each other's company in peace and stability.
The more Kayla thought about it, the more upset she felt. She didn't want to lose Daryl or leave her dad and she knew he didn't want to lose her. All of the sudden Alex appeared in the doorway. "Hey…" he panted. Kayla looked up and saw he was covered in sweat. "I think I have it…" he told her. Kayla's eyes fell. "Me too…" she replied. Alex went over and sat on the bed next to his daughter. She repositioned herself to make room for him. He sat with his back against the wall and looked at her. "We're gonna get through this…" he told her. "You're strong. And you'll kick my ass if I died." Kayla laughed. "I have to tell Daryl…" she said, her smile disappearing.
"You can't go out there." Alex told her.
"I know, I'll have someone else go get him and bring him to the window."
Kayla stood up and walked over to the door where Tyreese stood outside the door. He's been there since Sasha came down with it. "Tyreese…" she said. "Kayla…" he said.
"Go get Daryl…he needs to know."
"I don't wanna leave you guys unattended. Not after what happened to Karen and David."
"What happened to Karen and David?"
"Someone went down to their cells, killed them, and set them on fire." Tyreese told her, anger and frustration filling his tone.
"I didn't know…" Kayla said in shock. "But I need you to get Daryl. Please."
Tyreese nodded and then went outside to get Daryl. Kayla walked over to the window in the side room and waited for Daryl for a few minutes before he appeared. He rushed in and over to the glass. Kayla stood up and moved closer to the window. "Kayla…" Daryl breathed out. "I'm okay." she told him, even though he could clearly see she wasn't. Her skin was pale, she was covered in a sheet of sweat, and she looked as if she hasn't slept for weeks.
"I'm leaving with Michonne and Bob." Daryl told her, attempting to hide the sadness in his voice. "We're gonna go get some medicine and bring it back. Just hold on until then."
Kayla nodded. "I will." She said. "Be careful."
"Always am." Daryl assured her with a smile. Kayla put her hand on the glass and Daryl covered it with his on the other side. "I love you." He told her. Kayla smiled weakly. "I love you, too." She replied.
"I gotta go." Daryl told her. "You stay alive."
"I will."
Daryl left the cell block and when he got outside, he needed to hit something. He wasn't good at expressing emotions in front of people, even if it was Kayla, but he was angry. And frustrated. Kayla was sick. The one person in this world he loved and couldn't live without was sick with the sickness. He walked over towards the eating area and knocked down a bunch of pots and dishes before kneeling down on the ground and covering his face with his hands. He fought the tears back and then stood up. The only way she was going to live is if he came back with the medicine they needed. So that's what he would do. With that in his head, he went to the car where the others were waiting.
OOOOO
Kayla and Alex rested in a cell together with cold towels on their heads for a good part of the day when Hershel came in with two small cups. "Hershel…" Kayla said in surprise. "What are you doing in here? You'll get sick."
"I'm here to help those who can't help themselves right now, Kayla, so don't patronize me." Hershel replied, handing her and Alex the cups. They accepted them and looked at the warm liquid. "It will help with the fever." Hershel explained. Kayla took a sip and it was strong, but had a lot of flavor in it. She knocked it back, the warmth of it making her throat feel good and her stomach fill with heat. "Thank you." She told Hershel.
He took the cup from her and Alex stood up. "I am going to get a new towel." He said as he stepped out. Once he was gone, Kayla spoke again. "Hershel, I need you to do something for me." she said. "If this kills me, tell Daryl he has to keep going. He can't stop just because I'm gone."
"Kayla, you are going to live through this."
"I only started feeling warm this morning and I am burning up with a fever and my bones feel like glass Hershel. If I die, tell Daryl to keep going."
"I will." Hershel told her. "But that means you have to keep fighting."
OOOOO
This chapter sucks, I know, but it wasn't an exciting episode and I probably wrote it five times, but couldn't get it right so I just said screw it and this is the end product. I promise the next chapters will be better, but I just wanted to give you something since I haven't updated for a while.
