Kayla woke up the next morning drenched in sweat and coughing like crazy. Alex was in a cell with her and put an arm around her back as she leaned over the bed and coughed. He rubbed circles in her back and whispered calming things to her. When she finally ran her course, she sat back and leaned into his embrace. "How are you feeling?" she asked in a scratchy voice.
"Best as expected." Alex told her in a panted voice. Kayla looked up at him. "I'm gonna go get more towels." She said. "You lay down for a bit."
Before he could object, Kayla stood up and walked out of the cell. There were buckets of cold water and towels right next to it. She grabbed two of them and dunked them into the water. She let her hands sit in the water for a few extra seconds, the coldness feeling good against her hot skin. She closed her eyes and then pulled her hands out and rung the towels out before taking them back to her and Alex's cell.
She handed Alex a towel and he folded it so it was smaller before putting it on his head. Kayla sat at the edge of the bed and leaned her head against the wall before putting the towel against her skin. She closed her eyes and thought about Daryl. It was the only thing that seemed to make her forget about the pain in her stomach, throat, and head. She thought about the first time they met back on the highway and everything that happened at Hershel's farm. She thought about all the months they spent on the road before the prison and then everything after that. She thought about his smile and how he hid his face when he was nervous or embarrassed. How he fell asleep with his arms wrapped around her and how tight he would hold her. It made Kayla feel safe and secure when he did that. She remembered all the times he'd stop by the infirmary to say hi or steal her from fence duty earlier and take her somewhere in the prison to spend a little extra time together. She also thought about how if he was ever up before her he would place light kisses on her face and neck until she woke up.
All the memories brought tears to Kayla's eyes and she stopped thinking about them and tried to take a short nap. She was tired; physically and emotionally. Losing so many people at once wasn't something anyone enjoyed, but Kayla hated the fact that she couldn't do anything to stop it. They didn't have the medicine or supplies they had before the world ended, which made losing people a lot easier and frequent.
OOOOO
Kayla woke up in the early hours of night to gunshots and Alex shaking her awake. "Kayla get up!" he said in a loud voice."Walkers in the cell block Hershel needs help!" That was enough to snap Kayla back into reality and she got out of bed and rushed out of the cell to find several walkers strayed around. There was one munching on another person, three others going up the steps, and two more near the cells. Kayla reached for her gun on her hip, only to find it wasn't there. "Shit." She cursed. She went over to the walker munching on the person on the floor and pulled it off, throwing it onto the ground. Then she brought her boot down on its head. The other two noticed her and Alex and they immediately backed up. Alex grabbed Kayla's hand and pulled her into their cell. He got on the ground and reached under the bed, pulling out two large knives just as the walkers appeared at the cell entrance. "Kayla!" Alex said, tossing her a knife. Kayla caught it and waited for the walker to get close enough before driving her blade into its skull. She slumped onto the ground when it fell into her and Alex took care of the other one. Kayla pushed the walker off of her and closed her eyes as she began coughing up blood. Alex fell to the ground with her, his back against the bed. He closed his eyes and passed out from using the last bit of strength he had. Kayla looked at him as black began to seep into the corner of her eyes before she passed out.
OOOOO
Daryl, Bob, and Tyreese rushed into Cell Block A and immediately noticed the dead walker on the ground and blood on the floor. "Sasha?" Tyreese called out, rushing up the steps. "Kayla! Alex!" Daryl yelled, rushing ahead. He rushed looked in the cells and found them in the third one from the door. Kayla was on the floor against the wall with blood on her shirt and face and Alex was slumped against the bed…both of them unconscious with dead walkers next to them. Daryl grabbed the walkers and pulled them out of the cells before getting Alex up on the bed and picking Kayla up in his arms. He took her out of the cell and laid her down in another one. "Kayla?" he said. He pressed two fingers to her throat and was relieved when he found a heartbeat. He put his forehead against hers and then put his bag on the bed next to her. He pulled out the medicine and IV bags, prepping them just the way Bob told them in the car ride back. He poured the antibiotic pills and crushed them up in a glass before mixing them into the IV and syringe. He took her arm and injected the medicine into her arm. Once it was in, he hung the bag up and put the stuff back into his bag. He kissed her forehead and smoothed her hair down. "I'll be right back." he whispered.
Daryl went back to the cell Alex was in and did the same thing he did to Kayla. Once Alex had the medicine flowing in his veins, Daryl went back to Kayla's cell with several towels in his hand. He sat down next Kayla and cleaned the blood off of her face and neck. He wiped the sweat from her head and face as well before placing a cold towel against her forehead. Her breathing was steady and she was still asleep, but she was alive. And she would be healthy. Daryl took her hand in his and kissed it before putting his head down on the bedside. He would fall asleep next to her bed and be there when she woke up.
