When you're completely submerged underwater, head to toe, the world around you becomes quiet. Loud noises are no longer loud, but rather soft, muted sounds. You can't make out words that voices are saying and everything just seems to become quiet. That's all Kayla could feel and hear as she stood frozen in her spot on the ground after seeing Hershel's murder in front of her eyes. Although she wasn't in any water, the noises around her became muted. She could barely hear the screams and cries released from Maggie and Beth and didn't even know her body wanted to scream until she did. Her mind and brain couldn't function, but yet a loud, high pitched scream escaped her mouth. Not even her own ears could hear just how blood curdling the noise was. Why couldn't she hear herself scream? She felt her vocal cords stinging and her mouth drop to let the noise out, but she didn't hear it.
The whole situation made Kayla's body freeze on the spot. Her legs were like stone and her arms felt like they weighted a hundred pounds. Between that and the inability to hear anything clearly, she thought time had stopped altogether and the world was just slowing down in this moments. But the sound of a gunshot snapped her out of her haze and a hand latched onto her arm and pulled her to the side as more gunshots followed. The sounds of automatic weapons being fired filled the air and the world's sounds had returned to normal. Kayla looked down at her gun and then remembered what she now had to do. She looked past the wall as the tank rolled through the fences and raised her gun, aimed, and fired at the Governor's approaching people. They were walking up through the field and firing at the group, the tank firing at the Cell Blocks, causing small explosions.
Kayla fired at them, killing several of the Governor's people, but eventually had to move backwards for cover. Alex was by her side and Kayla searched for where Daryl was. She saw him near the fence, Carl no longer with him. He was covered by some old metal filing drawers and firing at the approaching enemies while the tank rolled up to the courtyard. Kayla fired off her last round and ducked behind the bench to reload, bullets hitting the metal near and around her head. Alex pulled her up again and led her to another safe spot which was behind the one reinforced area of the fence. Kayla looked up and saw Jonathan was on the side of the one cell block. "Jonathan!" she screamed, running from her dad and towards the nine year old. She pulled him down and looked at him for injuries. "What are yu doing? I told you to get on the bus!" she half yelled.
"Lizzie and Mika wanted to fight. Lizzie got two guns for them and took off. I didn't know what to do." Jonathan explained. Alex ran over and crouched down next to his daughter and the young boy. "We have to go." He said out of breath. "The fences are down and there are dozens of walkers side on their way up here."
"There are cars parked around the side of the prison. We can get to them." Kayla said as she stood up. "I have to get Daryl."
Alex went to say something, but Kayla walked back into the fight, killing several of the Governor's men before she saw Daryl where she last spotted him. Only now a walked was coming up behind him, Daryl unaware of it as he shot at the enemies a few meters in front of him. "DARYL!" Kayla screamed just as the walker turned towards Daryl and went to sink his teeth into him. Daryl faded from sight and Kayla let out another piercing scream. She went to run to him, but Alex's arms encircled her waist. "NO DARYL!" she cried out, tears in her eyes. Alex began pulling her away towards the other direction when Daryl stood up, the front of his gun jammed through the walker's skull. Kayla let out a breath of relief when several walkers noticed her, Alex, and Jonathan and went after them. "We have to go." Alex said again, pulling her and Jonathan away from the fight.
"What about Daryl?" Kayla demanded.
"We'll find him after, it's too dangerous right now Kayla." Recluantly, Kayla followed Alex away from the cell blocks and had a tight grip on Jonathan as they ran.
Daryl saw Alex pull Kayla and Jonathan away from the fight and felt his heart sink at the sight of his wife leaving. He knew a lot stood between him and her at the moment between walkers and gunfire, but watching her rush off in the other direction made something break in him. He knew he would find her after this. He had to.
When they got to the cars, Alex got in the driver's seat of the first car he saw, which was a Ford Escape, and Kayla safely put Jonathan in the back before getting into the passenger seat. Alex started the engine, put it in drive, and sped out of the lot and towards the side exit. Kayla looked in the rearview mirror as they drove away from the prison. There were flames coming from the cell blocks and smoke in the air, a signal of the mass destruction to a place Kayla once called home. She couldn't peel her eyes away from the mirror. She felt her heart break at the thought of leaving without everyone. Daryl, Rick, Carl, Beth, Maggie, Carol, Michonne…she's been with them for so long and now it was just her, Jonathan, and Alex.
Once Alex was far enough from the prison, Kayla finally tore her eyes away from the mirror. She would find them. She had to. Daryl was her husband. The others were her friends that she'd risk her life for. Looking down at the ring on her finger, Kayla remembered what she said to Daryl the day Hershel married them.
I'm not perfect and neither are you, but when I'm with you, we're perfect together. I think we have gotten through better and worse so far without being married except now I vow to always be by your side. And I vow to always love you and always be honest with you. I promise that I will stay by your side and I promise that if there ever comes a time that we are apart I will find you. I will find my way back to you one way or another no matter how long it takes or how hard it may be. For you, I would do anything because you are worth it, Daryl Dixon. I am so in love with you and don't know how else to tell you how much you mean to be then by making you my husband.
Please Review! Even if it is short and quick, I could use some cheering up tonight. I had a bit of a bad day…
