When Alex had driven about five miles from the prison, Kayla told him to stop. "Why?" he questioned. "What do you men why?" Kayla asked. "We have to go back. We have to see if anyone else made it." Alex pulled over and looked at his daughter. "Where are we supposed to look? They could be anywhere."

"Daryl would stick to areas he knew. Ground he's already covered on runs."

"Kayla, we have half a tank of gas, no supplies, and barely any ammo."

"What, you're saying I should just abandon him and the others?"

"No!" Alex snapped before looking at Jonathan in the back seat and then looking back at Kayla. "Look right now we have to find some supplies and gas, maybe some ammo if there's any lying around anywhere. Once we're equipped, then we'll go looking."

Kayla wanted to argue, but he was right. They needed supplies and they needed gas or they'd be caught with their asses hanging out. She just nodded and Alex started the car up again, following the road signs that should lead them to a rest stop.

It was about a half an hour before they arrived at the rest stop that was located closer to the small highway which wasn't more than a few miles from the prison. The group already swept it once a few weeks ago, but they got chased out by some walkers. Kayla was praying they didn't run into the same problem again. It looked deserted from the outside, but the inside was another story. Kayla unbuckled her seatbelt and checked the bullets in her gun. "Stay here with Jonathan." She told Alex as she slid the clip back into her gun. "I'll see what the inside looks like."

"Why don't you-" Alex began to say.

"No. I need to do this. I haven't been out here for a bit and..heh I need to remember what it's like."

Before Alex could further argue, Kayla got out of the car and walked over to the front doors. There were a few stray cars in the parking lot that they could salvage fuel from later and see if there was anything useful inside of them that they could take. The parking lot was large, but the rest stop wasn't huge itself. It wasn't bigger than a small, one floor house and Kayla guessed But right now, there could be a lot of things in the rest stop, and Kayla was praying for it not to be filled with walkers.

When she got to the front door, she looked through the glass. Inside she couldn't see any movement and from where she was she could tell the place was pretty empty when it came to supplies, but she could pick a few things out. She hit the glass with an open hand to make some noise that would attract any walkers inside. She waited a few seconds and hit the glass again when nothing approached the door. The second time though, she was greeted by a half decomposed, growling face. She jumped a little when it suddenly appeared and slammed its hand on the glass. She tucked her gun in its holster and pulled out her knife before opening the door. The walker, who was a male probably around thirty-five, came stumbling out and growling at Kayla. Once it was close, she jammed the knife through its skull and it fell over onto the pavement. She pulled the knife out of its head and looked up, just in case a few of its friends came walking out. That was the only walker.

Kayla motioned for Alex to pull the car up and looked inside one more. It was clear. Alex came out and Jonathan got out of the backseat. "Can I help?" he asked. "I think we're alright here, Jonathan." Kayla said. "Wait in the car. Keep the doors shut."

"Come on, please?" Jonathan begged. "I won't cause any trouble."

"Kayla we're on the road again. The kid should learn." Alex added.

Before Kayla could object, she remembered when they were on Hershel's farm and Lori made a big deal about Carl learning how to shoot a gun. Carl may have been older than Jonathan, but Jonathan did need to learn. The thought of Carl made Kayla feel a hint of sadness. Did he and Rick get out? And what about Judith? Lizzie and Mika had her and Jonathan said they took off. What did they do with Judith?

Pushing the thoughts aside, Kayla handed Jonathan her knife. "If a walker comes near you, you yell for one of us, got it? Or you run." Kayla told him. Jonathan nodded and accepted the knife, holding it the way Carol taught him in the library, something Kayla didn't know about.

Alex, Jonathan, and Kayla all walked inside, Jonathan staying with Alex. Kayla grabbed what she could from the racks which included a few candy and energy bars and there were even a few water bottles tossed around. She put all of it in her bag and Jonathan to grab what food he could, but to stay where she could see him. Then walked behind the counter and looked underneath it, hoping to find a firearm. She did. It was a simple handgun that had a few rounds of ammo to it that was hidden in another drawer. Kayla mentally thanked God for the find. She tucked the gun away and then looked over at Jonathan as he put the different kinds of non-perishables in the bag.

OOOOO

After finishing inside Kayla, Alex, and Jonathan searched the cars in the parking lot and found a couple of blankets, two first aid kits that had a few basic necessities including band aids and disinfectants, a couple of jackets. Overall they were off to a good start with supplies. Kayla grabbed a map from the directory and looked at it for a moment when she noticed a maintenance van parked off to the side. An idea came to mind. While Alex and Jonathan put the bags in the car, she walked over to it and opened the doors. Inside, there were your basic maintenance things such as mops and buckets, but Kayla grabbed a can of spray paint sitting on the floor.

Walking over to the wall, Kayla shook the can of paint and then began spray painting red on the wall. Alex noticed this and put Jonathan in the backseat before walking over. Then he saw was she as writing.

DARYL, CAME THE FIRST DAY. GO TO THE TRAIN TRACKS. –KAYLA

"Why the train tracks?" Alex questioned when she was done painting. She threw the can on the ground and opened the map to show him. "The tracks here run straight through all the area Daryl and Michonne covered together. Chances are is if he isn't there now, he will be. If he did for whatever reason try to head this way, he'll see this and know to turn around." She explained. Alex looked at the map for a long moment before looking at his daughter again.

"I know it's a long shot." Kayla said after a prolonged moment of silence. "But I have to find him. I made a vow."

"I know baby girl." Alex replied as he closed the map. "But until we do, you better watch that little boy. He needs us. We're all we've got for tight now."

Kayla nodded. She wasn't going to be the kind of mother Lori was. It was harsh to say it like that, but Lori never kept a close enough eye on Carl when she was around. He was always wandering around the farm or getting into something while they were on the road after the farm was overrun. Kayla liked Lori, she did, and after she died she was upset, but she could have done a better job in her mothering. She may not have been a mother herself, but Kayla would protect Jonathan like he was her own.

While they were driving back towards the train tracks and trying to find a place to crash for the night, Jonathan fell asleep in the back. Kayla smiled at the sleeping boy and then looked back at the road. She looked down at her ring again and examined the small diamond. It was the ring that once belonged to her mother. She still remembered Daryl proposing like it was yesterday. A smile formed on her face at the memory. She would find him.

A/N: I apologize for the boring-ish chapter, but I am going off script now and I didn't know exactly what I wanted to do for the upcoming chapters, so I figured I would start with something as the base. I promise the next chapters will be better.
