". . .But I Would Save Them"

Chapter 6: The Will of The Spirit Tree

". . . At long last. . ."

A large crowd of Moki were gathered around a particular house in the Wellspring Glades. A house that had been left purposely empty for three years.

". . the time had come. . ."

Inside the house, Gumo, Ku, Mokk, Opher, Lupo, and Naru were all gathered together. Right outside the door were Grom, Grol, Tokk, Twillen, Motay, Tuley, and Veral. They all wanted to be inside and close to the action, but the house was simply not big enough for the entire crowd.

". . .to save those who had been lost. . ."

In the midst of the group gathered inside the house, there lay three Moki figures made of stone. A young pup with a look of fear, a mother with a look of resignation, and a father with a look of utter brokenness and despair.

". . .for far too long. . ."

Naru held a small clay urn in her hands, a small portion of the large cauldron of golden liquid light that stood in Veral's Soup Kitchen. Everyone else watched with bated breath as Naru approached the three Moki statues.

Mokk crossed his fingers and whispered, "Please work, please work, please work-."

Ku smacked Mokk lightly on the back to silence him, then stared back at her adoptive mother as the moment of truth quickly approached. Lupo gulped as Opher closed his eyes in meditation, the both of them hoping that their mission into the Silent Woods would not be in vain.

As Naru stood over the petrified Moki, she stole a glance over at Gumo, and he smiled and nodded encouragingly to her, silently telling her to go ahead with his confidence.

So, Naru slowly and carefully tilted the urn to drizzle some of the golden liquid onto the Moki.

In spite of the crowd gathered together, the house had become just as quiet as the Silent Woods themselves. They back away, giving the trio a wide berth. They watched as the glowing drops clung to the stone, then slowly began to seep into it.

Gasps rang out as small cracks began to form on the petrified Moki. The smallest of the three was the first, the stone around her head and face crumbling away as she breathed heavily, her ears twitching sporadically. Young Molly looked up as she heard her mother gasp out as she too was freed from the stone. Mokayla shook herself, shedding flecks of stone and dust from her coat. She looked down at the pup, and relief and joy on her face as she beheld her daughter, very much alive. Then she realized that there was an arm around her, and she turned to see her mate standing close behind her, covered in cracking stone.

The stone suddenly shattered, and Mokhael breathed out loudly as he continued to stare upwards, still in the throes of despair, now mixed with utter confusion.

"Daddy?" Molly asked groggily.

Mokhael's head snapped down, and his jaw dropped at the sight of his daughter. Then he felt the soft touch of his mate's embrace, and he slowly turned to look at her. At that moment, Mokayla looked more beautiful than she had ever been. He had just fallen in love with her all over again. Tears ran down his face as he felt the intense pain and heartache that had broken him melt away. What had been broken inside had suddenly been pieced together again.

"My. . .my. . ." Mokhael gasped out in a hoarse whisper as his widened eyes took in every inch of Mokayla.

The female Moki chuckled softly, a sound that made Mokhael's heart leap. Then she quickly took a glance around and said to him, "Well. . .I assume this is the new home you found for us. . ."

Euphoric joy flooded through his very being as the devoted father and husband wrapped both his arms and his tail around his mate and daughter. He briefly buried his face into the soft fur of Mokayla's shoulder as he sobbed out, "My sweetlove. . . My truly, dearly. . ."

Molly relaxed in his father's embrace, but asked in confusion, "Why are you sad, Daddy?"

Mokhael lifted his head up and smiled down at his daughter. He was immediately reminded that the pup was the most precious thing in the world to him, and always would be.

"Daddy isn't sad," he said gently, "I'm crying. . .tears of joy. . .because I love you and your mother so very much. . .More than anything else."

Molly was happy to hear this, and she snuggled against her father's chest and said, "I love you too, Daddy!"

A fresh set of tears filled Mokhael's eyes, and he was so overcome with emotion that he immediately turned to his mate and kissed her with every ounce of his passion. He knew that this couldn't come even close to adequately expressing the full depth of the love he had for this Moki in his arms, but he simply had to do something.

Mokayla held him tight and returned the kiss in full.

The Moki outside all cheered and whistled and jumped for joy, while the others, both inside and in, did a combination of further cheering and shouting and uproarious applause.

During all this, Lupo turned to Opher and said, "Well, that's three down, More to go. That is, more for us to go and bring back, right? Um, if you'll take me along. . ."

Opher smiled broadly and said, "Provided you take up the sling and stones like I suggested, my friend!"
