~

At the start of each season a woman sacrifice was given up to the Werewolf clan of Dark Wood. This was to prevent them from attacking our village and wreaking havoc.

Everyone was afraid of what they could do so we didn't have much of a choice. If choosen it's the end of the line for you.

I just never thought I would be next.

When the fall season began, some men arrived at my apothecary shop to inform me that I would be this years fall sacrifice.

I resisted of course but to no avail. I shouted cursed words at them for sending me to die.

They had to bound me so I wouldn't run away. They stripped me of my clothes and covered me in nothing but a white nightgown.

The white was to symbolize a lost pitiful beauty and to attract the werewolves to the sacrifice.

We knew nothing about what they did to the sacrifices, only that they were never seen again. No trace of the former sacrifices was ever left not even the nightgown they wore.

The ritual was performed by a holy man splashing holy water on the body for god to have mercy on their soul. But there was nothing holy about this.

My name is Sabrina Evergreen and tonight is the night I die under the dark of the new moon.

I sat on an altar with my head down and my arms bound to a stake ready to accept my fate.

The men had already left and I did not care. I never saw any of the rituals performed I just knew from the rumors.

I never wanted to see this evil but experiencing it was no better.

I was thinking about how much I enjoyed gathering herbs to keep myself calm when I heard the sound of rustling through the trees.

So they are here. I'm going to die. I guess this is the fate of a woman who never had parents.

I die at the young age of 19.

I listened intently and I could hear the faint breaths of an animal huffing.

How many were there? 10? 20? Maybe even 30?

I looked around trying to see one in the dark when I froze. About 30 feet away behind some tall nightshade bushes was two glowing eyes.

My heartbeat increased and my shivers went up my back. In spite of my terror I looked down refusing to have the last thing I see was it's eyes.

I kept my attention on the flowers trying to enjoy this last piece of beauty as I heard the sound of the creatures footsteps.

This is the end.

"You poor thing."

I flinched as I heard the creature speak but I still refused to look no matter how gentle the voice sounded.

Have they always been able to talk? How have I never heard of this? These thoughts plagued my mind as the wolf came closer. He stopped about a foot away from me.

"I'm sorry. I didn't mean to scare you. Please don't be afraid."

I shook and still refused to look at him. Daring a peek out of the corner of my eye but only briefly.

I flinched when he bent down his head and looked up at me in my line of sight. Unable to look away anymore I looked at him against my better judgement.

A black werewolf with amber colored eyes. Tauted furry muscles on his arm, legs, and on the back of his head. His black tail wagged only slightly and around his waist a cloth and belt covered what I assume is genitalia although I can't see it with the slitted cloth he was wearing.

He moved closer and I closed my eyes as I saw his sharp teeth move closer to my head.

Instead of my biting my head though he bit the restraints tying my wrists and ripped them off.

My hands fell to my side and I massaged my aching wrists.

I was so confused. Is he setting me free?

Before I could question it he had scooped me up in one arm and ran with me into the woods.

His speed was inhuman and I shrieked everytime my head narrowly avoided the trees.

"Aghh! Put me down!"

"The others will want to claim you. I can't let that happen."

"Claim me?! What are you even talking about?"

"I'll explain when we reach my cave! For now you're just going to have to trust me."

"Trust you! You must be crazy if you think I will ever trust one of you! AAAAH!!!"

I screamed as he narrowly slid off a cliff and I looked down in fear at the drop to the sea below.

Being terrified of heights I fainted.

~

I woke up with something soft covering me. I sat up and a couple of bear furs slid down me.

Where am I?

I looked up and flinched to see the enormous werewolf from before tending to a fire. I looked around for something to hit him with and all I could find was a firepoker.

I picked it up and cautiously approached him with the poker in my hand. When I was sure to strike I thrust it into to his back to stab him.

He turned around so quickly and grabbed the weapon before I could even strike him.

"You're awake I see. Sit down and don't try and do that again."

He said as he easily pulled it out of my hands and picked me up and set me down on the other side of the fire.

His arm was almost as big as me. He had to be at least 10 maybe 15 feet tall.

"Who are you? And why did you help me?"

"I am Gregory Black Wolf of the Dark Wolf tribe. And I helped you to save you from being a wolf's bride."

"What?! A wolf bride? You mean a human bride for a werewolf?!"

"Yes. The werewolves save human girls from the evil of humans and offer to marry them and be their mate."

"How many are there of you?"

"A lot as far as I know. But I only know at least 30 of them."

"Why do the werewolves need human girls for wives? Can't werewolves mate with each other?"

"We actually can't. A wolf can only make more of it's kind with a human. Female wolves don't exist. And because our bodies are not capable of giving birth and only human girls can that's why we seek them out."

"So all those girls that were sacrificed? They're still alive?"

"Yes they are. I assume you humans thought we ate them correct?"
"Does it even matter if we did? What do your kind eat then?"
"Elk. Cows. Moose. Bears. And sometimes even fish. Human meat is just revolting."
This was surprising to me but I didn't want to say anthing else except for.
"Why did you save me?"
"If I didn't another wolf would have claimed you and you could never leave his side."
"And I assume you'll let me go then?"
"I can't because in a way you belong to me because I saved you. But as for the bride part I don't want to ever get married. You can either choose to let me keep you safe and alive or you leave and another wolf claims you."
"Is that a threat?"
"Not a threat but the truth. And even if you left and a wolf didn't claim you it would be hard to survive on your own. There's nothing but game to eat in these woods and all the plants are poisonous. Finding food would be a struggle when the woods is filled with many other werewolves. They would scare away everything before you even got a chance."
I sighed in annoyed defeat as I realized there was no way out of this.
"Where do the rest of the wolves live?"
"In the underground caves by the east coast. I'm one of the few to live away from them. The weddings take place in there as well as the mating rituals."
"How do you know about them?"
"I have to go down to the caves once every season for the Council to discuss how much of forest is each wolf's territory. The humans unknowingly left you on mine and I caught your scent."
This conversation sent shivers down my spine and my head was aching with so many more questions. But I don't think I even want answers to them.
"Twilight nears. It's time to sleep."
Gregory said as he nestled down into a ball beside the fire and curled up his tail.
With a sigh I laid back down on my bed and tried to go back to sleep.
What do I do now?
