Chapter 47: We Lived (Part 1)
Carley took two weeks off from work. Her coworkers sent her 'get well' gifts and cards. Some visited her to update her at work and such. The brunette with the bob cut hairstyle enjoyed staying home relaxing.
Feeling more secure when Lee made a phone call to install security around the house. Protecting his family is the number one priority. He vowed to protect his family since day one.
In the process of healing, she was sick of staying in bed, acting defenseless. Carley spend most of her time going through paper work, cooking and cleaning.
The doctor told them that Carley will recover from her minor injuries in a week or so. The stab wound on her hand had more stitches than her legs and right side of her waist. She still must wear a wrist-hand brace for month.
Clem made sure to check on Carley and clean up her injuries, then smearing ointment on them before patching them up. Helping her mother with anything made her feel needed. Carley could do it herself, but she let her daughter have fun playing nurse.
Clem went to school normally, but Lee daily remind her to call him whenever she sees that girl again. He offered to take her to school since he's on his early winter break, Clem refused. She made sure to ride with AJ for extra protection. The boy did go to kid boot camp for two summers that his father, Alvin, recommended.
While Clem in school, Lee snoozing upstairs in bed. As for Carley, she's sipping coffee with Kate, Jane, Katja, Christa, and Rebecca. Kate and Katja came over comforting Carley. But of course, Rebecca and Jane came to hear the scoop and shit that happened that night. Christa there for both. The support and sauce.
"So, after I alarmed the emergency button, she freaking stabbed me here." She flashed them her bandaged thigh.
"What did she use?" Jane asked. Very interested in the story. Rebecca hissed, knowing that wound hurt like a bitch.
"A pocket knife." Carley simply said. She sipped her coffee from her favorite mug that Clem made for her when she was twelve. Crappy structure but very useful when it comes to wanting a large dose of caffeine.
"How did you survive that? She could had cut your throat or stab any fragile artery." Rebecca asked. Katja smacked Rebecca's arm for being so dramatic and blunt. The black woman shrugged. She isn't wrong for asking. Anything could had happened. Carley sighed.
"I bashed her head on my car door. She lost consciousness for a second and took off. Now the car needs to go to the mechanic soon. I dented the shit out of it." She cussed under her breath.
"Just take it to Jesus or Javi. They good at fixing cars. They can help you for a lower price or for free." Kate suggested.
"Last time Javi touched Lee's car, he made the shit jump. I rather let Jesus see it." Rebecca grumbled. The ladies at the table giggled. They all remembered Lee's blank face while driving his old car doing jumping jacks on the street. Javi in the passenger seat smiling like an idiot, proud of his work. Kenny laughing his ass off in the back seat.
"Christmas around the corner." Katja lightened the mood. Carley's eyes glimmered. Mentioning Christmas always get them into the holiday spirit. Usually they gather their family together in a huge feast and exchange gifts at Katja's house. Have the kids together while the adults drink their asses off.
Jane and Luke barely went at first because of their awkward relationship. But the ladies insisted her to go this time.
"Jane, honey, it been four years with that man. We love for you two to come join us." Christa said with a smile as she poured herself cup of coffee. Jane shrugged. She stared at the table. Guilt hitting her.
"I'll see. I have my sister to visit. I probably stop by for a plate and go home."
"Be honest. You going to have Christmas eve and Christmas day sex with Luke." Rebecca blurted. Christa nodded her head while pointing at Rebecca, agreeing with her one hundred percent.
The red face on Jane's face didn't help. Her words stumbled as she tried covering herself up, but it didn't help. The ladies busted out laughing. Sure, things are getting better between the two. And she finally gave in to moving with him. Thought, she just wanted to spend the holiday with him alone. Plus, visit her sister.
Jane glared at the smirking black woman. Rebecca had no filter.
"Remember to wear something like a sexy Santa costume." Carley nudged Jane's arm. Jane leaned back on her seat, covering her face. Reason why she hates being the youngest. They always tease her, causing the girl to get all fluster and shy.
"Shut up~" Jane whined.
"For real, you should join us. I have a gift for your ass." Kate winked. Jane didn't like the sound of that. Brows high on her small forehead. Questioning what Kate could possible give her. More like give her and Luke.
"If it's a vibrator I will give it to Clem." Jane stuck out her tongue with a wink. Carley gasped, smacking Jane's leg. The pixie cut woman hissed, rubbing her leg with a smirk on her face. Seeing Carley like this humored the room.
"No, the hell you are not! I'm not encouraging her to play with...toys. Th-That's dirty! No teenager should...EW!" Carley whispered when she said 'toys', glaring at Jane who was snickering. Still rubbing the pain on her thigh.
"That girl is innocent. Why would you say that?" Katja furrowed. She watched Clem grew into a beautiful young woman. Any thought of her doing lewd things sounds so unrealistic.
As far as she knows, her boy, Duck, don't do drugs or drink as much. They do let him sip something only for occasions. But she doesn't know what he does behind her back. She still wants to keep that innocent yapping lil' Duck in her head.
"Innocent my ass. I know she's fooling around at this darn age. Lee had me give the kids the talk because he caught her and Gabe doing..."
"What! Seriously?!" Carley shouted. She clapped her hand over her gasping mouth.
"Well, not all the way. But that girl is at her age to have some fun. Look at it this way, Ava mess with chicks. And you know she gets down-" Rebecca said.
"Rebecca!" Carley hissed.
"I don't even want to know what Ava be doing locked in her room." Christa raised her hands, pausing Rebecca. Trying to burn images of her lesbian daughter doing the nasty.
"That girl still lesbian?" Kate asked.
"My girl is gay as a tangerine." Christa shook her head with a soft smile.
"Surprise that she didn't turn Clem one." Rebecca smirked. She yelped when she felt a smack on her arm. Carley gave her a look.
"Stop that!"
"Stop what?! You thought they were too when she was about...um thirteen?" Rebecca rolled her brown eyes. At that age, Clementine and Ava were inseparable. Sleepovers. Calling each other every day on the house phone. Long walks after karate practice. Holding hands. Kissing each other cheeks. The closeness was questionable. So close to the point anyone would assume they were together at a young age.
"I-I-I-" Carley stumbled.
"Exactly!" Rebecca pointed at Carley like she pulled a trigger.
"Wait! Clem dating Gabe?" Christa questioned. Rebecca and Carley shook their heads. Smiling like fools.
"Like her mom, that girl messing with black dic-"
"Rebecca!" Carley yelled, causing Rebecca to jump in place. The dark-skin woman couldn't help herself.
"Wait? Clem with who?" Jane shifted on her chair. Leaning her arms on the table to listen closely.
"Apparently she's with a musician's son, Louis Knight."
"Knight-Knight? Like the musician family? Rich Knight family?!" Christa crook her brow, eyeing Carley. Carley threw down her phone, scrolling on the wiki page of the Knight family and a picture of Louis with his father, Lance Knight Junior.
"I swear my parents always played the legendary Lance Knight music all the time. Someone done their research." Christa raised her glass up, clinking mugs with Carley.
"Why not. I'm paranoid on who around my man and daughter. And I can't believe its Lance Knight's grandson. Lance was very popular back in the day." Carley shrugged as she gulped the rest of the coffee.
She glanced down at her leg. Katja sighed as Carley caught her staring at her. She had to help her change her bandages later. The hand brace in the way of every little thing she wants to do now.
"Are you serious? He's loaded with cash." Jane gawked at how much they make.
"I can't believe he's dating that girl."
"What do you mean 'that girl'?" Carley gave Rebecca her sting eye. Rebecca pay her no mind what so ever.
"Clementine is a wild card. She probably going to end up pregnant." Rebecca stated. That statement made the women in the room jaw drop.
Carley scoffed. Cautiously glancing at the stairs. If her husband hears his sister outrageous rambling, he would have a fit.
"What?!" She whisper shouted. Jane interrupted her spazzing on Rebecca.
"So, Clem has a sugar daddy." Jane squinted as she read the biography of the Knight family. Carley glared at her. Why do they think bad of her daughter?
"No! Clem not spoiled."
"You gave her a car." Rebecca pointed out.
"That's not spoiling her. She needed one. And I don't think he's giving money to her. I hope not... Louis is a great person. He's very handsome and charming. He been through a lot with Clem. And she really likes him. Louis a sweet heart. Louis makes her happy."
"What happened between Gabe and Clem? Wasn't she in love with him." Jane rolled her eyes. Kate sighed. She sensed why Clem and Gabriel didn't work out. He been having a hard time lately with his father.
"He probably scared her off like Mariana." Kate frowned.
"What happened to Mariana?" Christa asked.
"She's living with David's mother now. This is the only way for her to avoid David's temper." The atmosphere dropped heavy. They all know about David tantrums. They even noticed a few bruises on Kate. As much as she tries to cover them with her turtle neck and make up, the ladies still eye her healing swollen jaw.
"And how is that going for you and Gabriel?" Katja asked. Kate thought about her small family. Sulking in the chair.
"I'm not sure...He been...distance... David going to spend Christmas and New Year with his friends."
"Kate, you need to put your foot down and tell him to be with the family this year. Those kids are his by blood. Or else you divorcing his ass. That's why Javier going to snatch you up one day." Christa added sass in her voice. Kate blinked cluelessly at them. Completely lost at this point. That name made every thought in her mind vanish.
"I can see you and Javier taking care the kids like a normal family."
"Javi?! What!? No, no, no, noooooo~! We are nothing. Nada! I am committed to David." She flashed her ring. Rebecca snatched her hand and pulled the ring off Kate's finger.
"You be a fool to stay with a man that murdered his wife."
"He didn't murd-"
"Suicidal case! I know. But he fucking beat her still she couldn't take it anymore. It was cute when David lighten up since you came in the picture. Then that thing happened..." Jane trailed at the end, mentioning the word baby trigger her. She then continued.
"Just know, that flame will blow out and Javi won't be there to rescue you." Jane poked Kate's chest. Kate held her breath, biting her bottom lip as her head hang.
"If he's going with his boys, let him. Bring the kids and chill with us." Carley softened the mood. Wobbling to Kate, hugging the tearful eye girl in her arms.
"I just wish things didn't turn this way." She cried. She stared at the silver band on the table. Glaring at her. Taunting her. Reminding her.
"Like how I wish for more dick from Alvin. But things won't happen till I make it happen." The ladies shook their head, keeping their thoughts to themselves before Rebecca snap at them.
Only the brave spoke up. It gets intense when discussing Rebecca marriage.
"Alvin ain't dicking you down?" Jane coughed, trying to hide her laughter.
"Barely. He been lazy lately since he came back from the force. Always hungry and wanting to sleep."
Men.
"Why not give him some medication for that?"
"Overall, I'm trying to say to Kate is make your moves. Don't be his puppet. And I am Alvin's wife. I'm the only medication he needs." She slammed her cup on the table. The ladies grinned while shaking their head or covering the snickers.
"Oh jeez..." Carley wiped her face in exhaustion.
"Trust me ladies. I do get what I want." Rebecca winked. The ladies in the kitchen shivered. Fearing to ask her how she succeeded.
.
.
Clem twisted her body to see her fidgety cousin. She cocked her brow upwards.
"What's up with you?"
"I'm nervous."
"Go to the bathroom then." She whispered. AJ shoved Clem. Her smile teasing the brown boy.
"This isn't like when I was little!" His nose flaring as his eyes burned holes through Clem. The curly brunette chuckled. Memories when AJ first met her, he always felt nervous around her. Especially when he slept over in her room, he would piss himself in his sleep.
AJ shook at that thought.
Clem hook her arm around his neck. Walking with him in the hallway.
"So~ what's going on?" She asked him. She felt his shoulders raise then dropped in frustration.
"I asked Louis for advice on...asking someone out..."
Best choice, Clementine thought sarcastically.
"Does it have something to do with the piano?" AJ nodded, tugged his lips inward. Clem paused, faced AJ.
"And?" She smushed her cheek with his.
"The plan he gave me is perfect but it's hard to ask her to come alone." He pressed on the last word. Clem's brows knitted.
"Um... what?"
"Tenn is glued to her. Everywhere she goes, he's there. And vice versa. It's fucking annoying. And if I ask her to come, she'll ask if Tenn can come." He whispered. Looking around for any nosy ears.
Clementine frowned. The look on AJ face upset her. All AJ want is a high school sweet heart. AJ learned how to play the piano for Becca. Asked her to hangout and build gingerbread houses. He really likes the girl.
Clementine didn't want to admit to him that his two friends are ...maybe... together.
She rested her hand on his shoulder.
"Goofball, have some hope. How about write her a small note to come alone?" She suggested. The boy with the afro eyes sparkled. He stunned the girl when he suddenly clap his hands on her upper arms.
"Can you write it for me?"
"The fu-"
"Okay. Okay. I write it but help me."
"Fine." She muttered.
Clem and AJ stopped at his locker. He pulled out a notebook paper and Clem helped him worded the letter to Becca. Once he finished, he searched for her locker to stuff it in there. Made sure no one was watching him. Clem giggled.
"Hey Clem!" Clem heard her name. She whipped her head to see Aasim and Omar.
"Hey guys."
"Are you free for New Year's Eve?" Omar asked. Clem twisted her lip. Usually her family stay home, watch the New York city ball drop then go to bed. Nothing special happens.
"No. Why?"
"There's a party happening down town. And we trying to spread the word." Aasim said, handing Clem a party invitation. She read through it.
"You would need that to come in." Omar informed her. She nodded. Really not feeling the party mood. Things aren't the same anymore. She promised her parents she would be wild like before. Getting waste at a dark club filled with horny and high teens. She wouldn't want Louis to see her all touchy. Or say the regretful things to him.
"I'll see."
"Great! Make sure you come with your boo." The guys brushed pass her shoulders in a playful manner. Clem froze where she stood. Jaw hung in shock.
She turned around to see him snickering at her.
"Who?! What boyfriend?" Her brows high and eyes round and wide.
Aasim turned around, walking backwards. Cupped around his mouth.
"Yeah! Okay! Say that when you're drunk at the party!" Aasim shouted. Clem stormed off. No way they think she's dating...him. They just teasing her like usually.
Yeah.
.
.
Mr. Hershel Greene passed out students graded tests. After handing them out, the bell rung. Clem gathered her stuff together. She glanced at the ninety-five on her science test. Smiling at the paper she didn't realize where she was going when she left out the room.
She lightly bumped into someone. She looked up to see James.
"I'm sorry. Are you okay?" She asked him. The boy nodded his head. He was busy staring off to space too.
More like looking at the hugest star of them all. She lined up his gaze at her friend, Mariana. The girl wore her red veil over her head, a long black flowy skirt and a white turtle neck fitted shirt. She waved at her classmates and spotted James and Clementine staring at her.
She came up to them with a blush on her cheeks.
"Is something on my face?" She asked them. James kept staring like a fanboy screaming excitement in his head.
"No. You're good." Clem smiled at Mariana. Mariana smiled back, brushing her strands of hair behind her ear.
"So... Are you going to the New Year's Eve party?" Clem asked them. James never heard about it, he doesn't do parties.
"I want to."
"You party?" He gave her a look. Mariana's cheeks heated as she looked down for a moment then back at him.
"Duh~! What Latina don't party?" She giggled. James chuckled, hearing her sweet angelic giggles, fluttered the butterflies in his chest.
"You should come!" Mariana grabbed James now sweaty hands.
"Me?!" He squeaked.
"Yes! You can company me! Making sure esos pervertidos won't bother me. And I want to see you have fun. Us quiet kids need some fun too." She smirked. James' face started glowing red. She stood very close to him.
"Omar right there!" Clem pointed. Mariana grinned, rushing across the hall with James. James gawked at the Latina's hand on his. Savoring this moment for eternity.
Clem saw Mariana fanning two invitations in the air. Clem gave her the thumbs up.
At lunch, Clem saw Gabriel sitting alone at a table with freshmen. He's not alone but he shown no interest for the young teens. She sat beside him without thinking.
He glanced at her.
"Hola." She smiled nervously at him. He crept a small short smile. Resting his face in a blank expression.
"Is something bothering you?" Clem asked him. She pushed her tray of food in front of him. The gesture surprised him a bit. No doubt he'll let this offer down. She chewed on orange slices while he gobbled up a slice of pepperoni pizza.
"I just... I'm very angry at myself." He told her truthfully. Clem eyed him as he kept venting.
"I ruined everything. First Mariana and you, then Ava, and sadly...Duck. Duck don't even want to look at me. We used to be like this." His two fingers overlapped together.
"Now I don't even know why you still talk to me when I'm shit. I'm a fuck up. Like dad..." He said. Clem took a napkin and whipped the sauce off his lips.
"Gabriel, you are nothing like your father. Never think that. You are your own person and you been through a lot. I know you made mistakes and I accept your apologies because I still love you. No matter what. I will be by your side...It took time for me to recover from it all but it's all in the past. Duck and Ava still love you but let them heal like I did. Let them find a way to let go." Clem tossed the dirty napkin on the tray. She handed him small carton of milk as she took the orange juice.
"They hate me." He choked up. The look in his brown eyes sadden. Clem cupped his cheek. She shook her head, denying what he just said.
"Just know we don't hate you. We can't hate you. We love you, Gabe. We are family. No matter how mad I get, I will still love you, Gabe." Gabriel stared at her. She stared back at him with a small smile. He sighed. The two went for a hug. Missing the feeling.
"You're the best person anyone could ever meet, Clem. I love you too." He whispered in her ear. She almost shed a tear.
She pulled off him. Saw Louis and Marlon passing by, completely unaware of them. The two tall teens left the cafeteria.
Gabriel caught her staring at the dreadlocks teen till he disappeared when he turned the corner.
"Is it true that you guys are... together?"
"Um...what?" Playing dumb is the first sign of saying 'yes, we are'. Gabe gave her a knowing look, brows high and eyes staring in to her soul.
"You can't lie to me, Clem. Duck caught you two making out one early morning."
"DUCK WHAT!?"
"Silencio..." He shushed her, looked around the room. The sophomores eyeing them weirdly. Clem cleared her throat. The two got up and went to throw away their trash.
"We were tipsy that night of the ginger bread thingy. He showed us a video of you two making out in front of his yard." He said while throwing his carton of milk away. Clem felt her blood stop in her veins. She threw away her trash robotically and laid the tray on top of others. The two left the cafeteria into the hallway.
"The fuck man! We can't hide shit from no one." She dragged her hand through her curls. Gabe breathed out a short laugh.
"Why hide it?"
"Um... because ..."
"Clem?"
"You guys nosy as fuck! And I never had any privacy. Its... hard to do anything when eyes on me all the time. You guys treat me like some ...baby when it comes to these things. Ava prying to know every detail and judging me at the same time. Duck questioning every move. And...you... I-I couldn't hurt you. We just broken up and..."
"You guys dated right aft-"
"No! We gave it-See! Like this! Gabe... I just want a simple, peaceful relationship."
"You didn't want that with me?" He frowned. Clem avoided his gaze. Staring down at the floor. She hugged herself.
"It was... going too fast for us. We forced it to feel somewhat happy. You had your problems and I had mine at the time." Her voice shrunk.
"Everyone has problems."
"But you promised me you wouldn't act like before that ended us from the beginning." Her eyes started to swell up with tears. Clem did her best to dry them away.
"I-I know... I'm sorry." He pulled her into a hug. Hesitant at first, she let her body be swallow up in his arms.
"I forgive you." She said. Gabe broke apart from the hug. Steadying his eyes on her.
"If anything troubles you, I'm here for you." Clem fist bumped his stone lean stomach.
"Like wise."
.
.
"Everyone knows about us." Clem dropped her books on her desk. Planting her butt on the chair. Louis chuckled. He shifted his chair, dragging it close to hers. He wrapped his arm around her shoulders.
"Woops." The grin on his cheesy face made her giggle. She looked up at him, flashing her toothy smile.
"Not even a month." She whined.
"It felt like we been together for seven months." He said. The girl beside him laughed lightly. Clem checked her phone calendar.
"We made it official after black Friday. So that's... Three weeks. Next week will be a month." She informed him. Louis's hand covered her phone. Leveling down.
"Who's counting anyway? Nerd." His voice dropped. Huskier than she ever heard. His hooded eyes lowered as he pulled her closer to him. Clem fluttered her lashes, peeking through them as their faces inches closer.
"Dork." She whispered. Her lips met his briefly. Her heart sunk when the room flooded with more students and the teacher. She whined.
"Big baby." He whispered in her ear. He released his arm around her and moved back to his seat.
"Whatever." She smiled, feeling the apple on her cheeks reddened.
"Ugh. Now you two are opened about it, keep it PG. Please." Aasim sat in front of Clem's desk. Brody came around and sat in behind Louis.
"What did I miss?"
"Them cuddling and smooching." Aasim thumbed behind him, directing at Clem. Brody look between the curly head and dreadlocks teens.
"Wait!? It's for real!?" She squealed. Everyone in the room focused on them at the back corner. Clem put her head down, covering her red face.
"Settle down everyone! I know winter break start in a few days, but we still have some things to cover." The teacher stood up, writing stuff down on the white board.
Louis turned his head around to Brody.
"Yes." He smirked. Clem groaned. She felt a tug on her hand. She looked down at his fingers lacing with hers. She shifted her gaze on him, his handsome smile. It was hard to concentrate in class when he held on her right hand throughout the period.
