13 Unbalanced Power

Kevin didn't sleep well that night, he kept re-watching his father's message. In the morning he tromped into the kitchen to find something to eat before school. He'd sort of forgotten that Jay had spent the night. Which might have been why he jumped when someone who definitely wasn't his mother laughed from by the coffee pot.

"You know that's a good look on you Levin." Kevin looked down and blushed bright red. He had fallen asleep in his sweatpants and nothing else. He'd been working out with his dad since he was seven. He was pretty well built, and though he hadn't run a brush through his overly long hair yet Jay didn't seem to mind. She gave him the once over and smiled into her coffee mug, which he recognized as his favorite Star Wars mug. "Who knew a nerd like you could be built like a brick wall?" She teased as he turned and quickstepped out of the kitchen.

He went back to his own room blushing bright red as he pulled on a t-shirt and jeans. He frowned and slipped the holo-viewer into his jacket pocket. His jacket was a dark grey, a few shades darker than the Omnitrix. Since he was on the wrestling team, or at least had been, there was a bright silver number eleven emblazoned on his upper left shoulder. He went back out to the kitchen to find his mother making pancakes, it was her day off after all.

"Kevin! Good you're up. Jay's offered to drive you to school today!" She waved at him from by the coffee pot. He nodded as his mother filled up a few plates. Turning to Jay he frowned. The very tips of her hair were still pink, and her eyes were still the bright color as well.

"How are you feeling?" He asked and she shrugged.

"A little drained, but I'll live. I've got a few things back at my place that will help me recover pretty quickly." His mother raised an eyebrow but didn't ask, he was glad. He wasn't sure he wanted to know what Jay was talking about either. Breakfast was quickly devoured and Jay kept her word dropping him at school before heading out to the warehouse she called home. By the time she reached it she was shaking. She made it inside and stumbled to a workbench, fumbling her way through a collection of bottles until she managed to lay hands on the bright pink one she was looking for. She pulled the cork out with her teeth and spat it out before downing the contents of the bottle. She collapsed to the floor and shook for a moment not even noticing the footsteps approaching her.

"You know normally you know when I break into your place, you're slip… Jay?" Charmcaster knelt next to her friend panic overriding the teasing in her voice. Jay managed a shaking breath and looked up at Charmcaster. "You look like shit, what happened?" She demanded hefting Jay upright to help her to the bed in the corner. Jay shook her head.

"Should have known I was walking into a trap. It was stupid." She muttered. Charmcaster nodded.

"Yeah, and you're drained as hell." Charmcaster set her down on the bed and pulled off her gloves, taking Jay's hands, noting the deep purpleish black hue her nails had taken on, it was slowly leaking into her fingers too. "Let's get you balanced back out." She began to chant as power filled the air and skin color replaced the purple black color in her fingers and brown replaced the pink in her hair. Charmcaster shook her head as Jay passed out.

Jay was asleep for several hours before she regained consciousness and some semblance of control. Charmcaster frowned at her holding out a bag from Mr. Coffee, along with a very large coffee.

"What the fuck Jay? Why didn't you call for help?" Jay shrugged as she began to chug the coffee despite the burning heat of it.

"I had it handled."

"This is handled? Because this doesn't look like anything is handled, this looks like regressing! Your fingers were black! And your eyes are still pink. This looks like you turning back into what you were when I found you!" Charmcaster said raising an eyebrow at her. Jay shook her head.

"I got stuck in a bit of a situation ok! It pulled out a lot of power and almost broke what we fixed. But I'm ok. I just need some time." Charmcaster sighed as Jay pulled out a breakfast sandwich from the bag and began to eat it.

"The hell have you gotten yourself into Jay? Come on Jay, we tell each other everything. What's going on?" Jay frowned down at the floor.

"You're not gonna approve." Charmcaster rolled her eyes.

"You're smart enough not to deal with demons, the hell won't I approve of?" Jay rolled her eyes.

"I ran into my cousin. He has powers too. But he thinks he can only do elemental magic. He needs help, not as bad as I did but if he slips like I did and I could have helped…" Charmcaster pulled her friend into a hug.

"You're joining up with the good guys. What am I gonna do with you Jay?"

"He needs help. My parents, and his, still don't know I'm even on planet but if he can have the control I didn't, I can't just sit by and do nothing." Charmcaster nodded.

"I know you can't. Just don't tell Hex. He's not going to much like it. But call me if you need anything ok?" Jay hugged her friend. Though Charmcaster's uncle was not someone to get on the bad side of the two of them had each other's backs and it was nice to know. Charmcaster pulled back with a frown too and wrinkled her nose.

"Does this mean you're working with Levin too?" Jay let out a breath.

"Yeah. He needs help, his dad's gone missing and for some reason he's giving me a second chance. Maybe that's what we both need." Charmcaster laughed lightly.

"Well, something tells me he won't be as keen to give me a second chance. But I hope it works out for you." Jay grinned at her friend.

"I hope so too."
