Prologue

Faint ringing from her alarm clock slowly roused her that morning. Dark lashes fluttered open to reveal crystal blue eyes. She rolled over onto her back once she shut her alarm off, letting her gaze travel up to her ceiling. For a moment, she let herself get lost in the peace around her.

It felt so surreal. She wasn't still dreaming, was she?

Singing birds sat outside her window, the glimmers of the warm sun already peppering through her curtains. Kagome pushed herself up and glanced around her room. As she did, her eyes landed on the wooden bow resting against the wall of her room, a half-full quiver of arrows right beside it. Her yellow bag, once stuffed full to the point of bursting, hung empty on the wall above it. It almost looked like a memorial for the days she spent fighting tooth and nail for her life and the lives of her friends. She got out of bed, padding barefoot over to her window. She pulled her curtains back all the way, gazing out at the world. She let her gaze pause on the wooden well house, where her portal through the ages still resided. She couldn't feel the magic of it anymore. It was sealed. Should she want to, she'd be able to break the seal, but maybe it was better left intact…

Upon looking at the well, the memory of that moment from the start of her adventures came back to her. She frowned and moved to rest her fingers over the odd, starburst-shaped scar over her ribs. Though it was out of reach, whenever she pressed her hand there, she could swear she could feel the surge of the jewel. She'd wished for it to disappear, and it'd done that. If it'd gone back into her body, she didn't mind. She just hoped there wouldn't be another incident with it any time soon in her lifetime. Or ever, really. That would be an even better outcome.

Pushing those concerns away, a small smile appeared on her face.

"I never realized how beautiful it is here, too," Kagome whispered to herself, her voice soft and sweet. The feudal era was beautiful, yes, but so was the modern era. Each had its own unique appeal to her. The sun lit up the grounds so magnificently, and she'd never been happier to be able to just be home.

She shook her head and turned away from her window so she could get ready for the day.

In the wake of the final battle, her school uniform had suffered more than just a few tears to the shirt of it, but her mother was ever prepared. She'd ordered a new one again, just on the off chance she'd return home with it in unrepairable condition.

"Kagome-chan!"

Walking into the classroom, her friends were quick to notice her presence. In seconds, the three girls flocked to her side instantly, happy to see her back and looking as bright as ever.

"Your mom told us that you were getting better and that you'd be coming back to school soon!" Ayumi exclaimed happily. "What a relief…" she trailed off with a sigh.

"And you came back at the perfect time, too!" Yuka added as they walked over to her seat with the ravenette in tow. "You still have enough time to improve your grades before graduation."

Kagome couldn't help but nod in agreement with them. "It won't be easy, but I know I can do it," she said, smiling. After all, she's endured much worse recently. Fixing her sub-par grades back to decent would be a cakewalk.

"You have us helping you, too," Eri added on with a grin. "We haven't had a proper study session in such a long time."

"That'd be great, actually," she responded with a sigh. Sure, it'd be a lot easier than fighting demons on the daily, but she'd accept all the help she could get.

She fell back into the routine she had before she ever got pulled down the well relatively easily. She'd think back to those days more often than she cared to admit out loud, but it was only the favorable moments that ever occupied her mind. She'd pushed all the negative memories far from her mind, choosing to only ever account for the pleasant ones. She didn't have a choice to change and adapt to fighting then, but now that was all over. She didn't have to let the bad moments stick around in her thoughts.

She missed her friends and everything else, but the more she spent in her era, she was sure she made the right choice in coming back.

"Hey, what about this one?"

Kagome paused in her trek through the store at hearing the voice that came from her side. She glanced over her shoulder and at the man standing with a dress in his hands. It was blue with a silver skirt. By the look of it, the skirt was much longer than the one she was wearing now, and it nearly reached her knees. She retraced her steps back to his side, carefully plucking the dress from his hands and holding it up to her body for comparison.

Her first assumption had turned out right. The dress went well past her knees, and she arched a brow. She liked silver, but the balance was way too off for her liking.

"Next time I'm going shopping for clothes with mom," she responded. There was a half-smile on her face when her father huffed.

"You don't even like this boy," he responded. "Why are you going on a date with him?"

To her not-so-hidden annoyance, her girlfriends had set up yet another date with Hojo. It seemed that no matter how many times she practically spelled it out to them that she saw him as a friend, nothing more, nothing less, they just couldn't take the hint. Kagome shrugged and handed the dress back to the blonde man.

"He's a friend," she defended a bit before sighing, her shoulders slumping some. "I'm hoping I can at least let him down easy and get my point across." It wasn't too late to cancel the date, she knew, but each time she'd done that before didn't seem to do anything to get her own feelings across. She just wished they'd stop trying to fix her up with him.

He put the dress he held back on the rack and folded his arms across his chest. "You mean well, but you need to just be honest," he said, turning back to the clothes rack a few seconds later. She watched, a smile at risk of rising on her face as she watched the tall, lanky man search through the dresses he stood in front of, looking for something for her. He grabbed a bright orange piece, the color almost neon, and she hurried to push it back on the rack before he could fully move it away.

"Not a chance in hell," she said flatly. "And I am honest!" she exclaimed, looking up at him with her hands on her hips. "Each time I feel like we're on the same page, the girls just keep encouraging him to keep trying. It's a serious problem, dad!" She pouted and turned her focus to the dresses, searching through them as well half-heartedly. "It's just so frustrating…"

He sighed and patted the top of her head, ruffling her hair like he always did. Her pout deepened, a flush of pink staining her cheeks at the gesture he'd been doing practically her entire life. "You'll figure it out," he said, and she felt her confidence grow stronger at his assured tone. "You're a smart kid."

Kagome rolled her eyes and ducked out from under his hand. "And you're a great dad," she commented. She reached to take his hand in her own, leading him away from the clothing before he could find another crime against fashion to offer her. "However, helping me pick out clothes is definitely not your forte."

She felt a little bit bad about just up running, leaving from her date with Hojo with a harmless little lie about feeling a fever come on. She'd neglected his offer to walk her home and left as quickly as she could. It hadn't been planned, but…

She made her way down the street, blue eyes scanning the area closely.

"But… I swear I felt him around here…" she trailed off, a mild frown pulling her lips downward. It'd been hard to make out at first, but, sure enough, she knew who that aura belonged to. Before she could turn or take another step, she felt that aura again, and she zeroed in on it. As she did, her eyes eventually met a pair of molten gold she'd be able to recognize anywhere. Excitement filled her, and she was rushing over to the familiar half-demon before she even knew what she was doing. At the same time, he caught sight of her. It looked as if he had been trying to sniff her out, and he opened his arms when he spotted her making her way over to him.

"Inuyasha!" she cried and dove into his arms, a bright smile spreading across her face when he readily caught her and crushed her against his chest. The grip was tight, but not painfully so, and she matched it with as much vigor as she could. "What are you doing here?"

"I went to the shrine to find you, but you weren't there," he said. "So I just went looking for you." He let her go at last, and she stepped back a few paces. He arched a brow. "What are you up to anyway?"

She stifled a laugh and shook her head. "I was with a friend, but then I felt your aura so I had to come find you!" she said. He always had a weird way of crashing into her modern era moments. At least this was the least chaotic one. "Why were you looking for me?"

"Tch…" He folded his arms across his chest. "Do I need a reason?" he scoffed, looking away from her. Kagome felt her smile melt as she glared at him. He knew that glare, and he stiffened up some at feeling the pressure of it land on him, backing up a step out of reflex. "H-Hey! Enough with looking at me like that."

"..." Her silence was more intimidating than he remembered. Feigning annoyance, he huffed.

"Fine! I might've missed you a little bit!"

Kagome sighed and shook her head. "Well, then it's even," she said, and she didn't miss the way he perked up some. "I missed you, too," she said quietly. She was happy that he came to find her in the modern era. He'd sure taken his time, but that didn't matter.

When he turned and offered his back to her, she knew what he was getting at. She smiled brighter and made her way over to him. She jumped on his back and he quickly caught her and fixed her into place just like he used to always do whenever he carried her piggyback style.

Auroua-chan: Ending this here for now~

The jewel might come up later, but for the most part it doesn't have a physical form anymore. It's back inside Kagome's body.

Pairing is undecided. I have a few ideas for it, but nothing is set in stone. Feel free to make suggestions!

Anyway, that's it for now! Thank you all for reading and I hope you all enjoyed! Hopefully I caught all the errors before posting, but if not sorry.

Please remember to Reivew&Favorite&Follow, thank you!

Bye for now~
