Summary: What if the Militia was never created after the blackout happened? What if Bass stayed as more of a good guy, instead of a bad guy after the blackout? When he comes upon an injured Kat after she escapes the prison world and Kai, will he be able to succeed in saving her? If so, what will happen between the two of them?

It was a beautiful day, as an injured and human Kat headed towards a road, knowing that she needed to get somewhere where she could find someone that would help her. After dying as a human, she'd ended up in a prison world, which she'd escaped. When she escaped, she'd ended up here, wherever here was. It seemed to be some kind of world that wasn't working like it used to anymore. She hadn't been able to make anything like a vehicle work for her. She was injured because of who had been in that prison world.

Meanwhile, Bass was riding a thoroughbred horse, heading down a road. It had been a long five years since the blackout. For a while, he'd had the company of Miles, but he'd eventually moved on to find his family, which Miles didn't want him to accompany him in doing. As respect for their friendship, he'd honored his wish. Besides, he knew Miles could look after himself. He didn't need him. They were always good together, but even better alongside each other. Now, all he could do was survive and maybe help anyone he came across in trouble.

After what felt like an hour or two of walking down roads, injured from the prison world, not finding anyone nearby, she found that despite wanting and needing to, she couldn't go on any longer. Now, she lay on one of the many roads, feeling weak, everything starting to go blurry. She could only hope someone would come along that would help her before it was too late. Otherwise, she knew she was going to die.

After a while longer of riding down some roads alone, he saw someone in the middle of the road on her back, injured, he stopped and dismounted. He then grabbed the first-aid from the side of the horse's saddle, as well as his handgun. Although she was injured, this was survival to the fittest. Anyone or anything could be nearby, so he had to be cautious. He then approached where she lay, which was when he saw her injuries.

"What's your name? I'm going to help you," he said, as he set his gun down close by. Just in case he needed it. There were still terrible people left alive in this world, after all.

"Katherine," she replied.

"You can call me Bass," he told her, as he applied pressure to her side wound to stop the bleeding. "What happened to you?" he asked her to keep her awake. That, and he was also wondering who would want to hurt her.

"I'm not sure you'd believe me if I told you," she replied.

"Well, considering I've seen a lot of crap, I think I can at least take your word with whatever happened," he told her.

"Kai did this. Long story short. I'm a doppelganger that died, ended up in a prison world, and then when I escaped from it today, I ended up here. Considering I have the ascendant with me though, he's trapped there forever."

He finished up with her side and shoulder with the first-aid, so he then looked at her other wound. Her leg with an arrow.

"This is going to hurt," he told her.

"Just do it," she said. "Can't be any worst than the hell I've had my whole life." Then she mentally got herself ready for the pain.

He grabbed the arrow and quickly pulled it out, tossing it to the ground, and began tending to her last wound. He was impressed as to how well she did with pain. He'd never known anyone that did so well with pain that wasn't Miles. But he and Miles had been to war. They'd had to deal with pain. Someone like Katherine though, even though he didn't exactly know her, he didn't think she deserved to have to deal with any amount of pain.

Once he'd finished with her leg, he grabbed his gun and what was left of the first aid. He then slid an arm under her legs. "I'm gonna get you out of here." Then he gently picked her up. As he did, she allowed him, being weak from all the blood loss, and rested her head on his shoulder, arms weakly around his neck. Then everything went black for her.

That night, a few hours later, he got settled in the woods, her sleeping on one side of the campfire, him on the opposite side of it. He'd fetched the horse he'd been riding, so he had the horse tied to a nearby tree with some water. It had been a very long time since he'd felt connected to anyone other than Miles, so it felt strange to feel like he wanted to do nothing but protect Katherine, whoever she really was. But he'd find out sooner than later, he was sure, who she was. All he knew was her name and what had happened to her.

Several weeks later, after they'd gotten to know each other pretty well, they fell for each other. So, despite it being the blackout, they found a house to stay in, making it their own home. So, they became a couple, living in the house and protecting each other when needed.
