Things Happen (4th revised version)
Summary: Set in S2 ep S**t Happens. Since I don't cuss, I renamed it to the title you see. What if Miles didn't get a chance to kill that last Texan guy? What if the Texan guy shot at Bass and Rachel when they were looking for Miles? Who will get hurt? Will everyone be okay?
It was a beautiful day. Bass and Rachel had split up to find Miles in two separate directions, so when Rachel wasn't far from a hill that led to a cemetery, she didn't expect Bass to show up.
"I thought we were splitting up," Rachel commented.
"I hit a dead end," he informed her.
When Rachel saw a jacket on a slope part of the hill and investigated, opening it to check, she said, "Bass, this is a lot of blood."
Bass knew she was worried for him, afraid she'd lose him. Before she'd loved Ben, she and Miles had been in love, so they had quite the history together. He knew they would always love each other of some degree, but so had he and Rachel back in the day.
He knelt on the opposite side of where she was, on one side of where the jacket lay, and looked at her.
"I promise, we will find him. I know Miles. When he gets beaten down, he always gets back up, stronger and more stubborn than before," he comforted and promised.
Rachel knew Bass' words were true. They'd both seen it.
She got to her feet, as did he, ready to continue their search.
They were so enthralled in looking for Miles and talking, they didn't know there was one Texan left alive, waiting for his moment.
Bass was a foot or so away from her, rifle in hand, when he saw Rachel get shot. When that happened, and when he saw a Texan by some trees, he didn't miss a beat. He shot him dead, before rushing over and kneeling at her side.
"Rach," he said, using his and Miles' nickname for her. He then took his jacket off, pressed it to her lower stomach wound, and tied it around her and in place to try and keep her from losing too much blood.
"Bass," she said, her vision going gray.
"You're going to be okay, Rachel," he assured her, as he slid an arm under her legs, slid his other under her, and pulled her into his arms, before getting to his feet. He wasn't going to let anything happen to her if he could help it. He wouldn't let her die.
As everything went black, she heard him and felt him pull her into his arms and get to his feet. As he did, she weakly put her arms around his neck, and rested her head on his shoulder, right now, not fighting him with anything, letting him head back to the town to get her taken care of.
A few hours later, after her father, Eugene, had tended to her, she woke up to see that she was home. She also saw Bass by her bedside, seated in a chair. It looked to her like he'd been worried about her. She hadn't seen him worry about her since they were in college and together.
"You stayed," she groggily greeted.
"Why wouldn't I? I had to make sure you made it through. How are you feeling?"
"Better."
After they'd talked for a while, they had a heart to heart, and soon were making out.
In the end, Miles was found and lived, and Bass and Rachel began a romance relationship.
