A/N: Thirty Chapters in, now we get to two fights I've been waiting for, one original and the other a tweak. Anywho, Review Time.
To Murtaito: Knew you'd like it, a little fact the restaurant bar they went to is based off one I've visited frequently, as the atmosphere would certainly suit the two.
Enjoy.
Chapter 30 - Valor and Perfection
In only three days, our Written Exams for the end of the semester came swiftly to an end, tensions, fears, and the unknown clouding our minds lifted partially, the first half of our trial had been passed, now, it was only going to get worse...
Standing just outside the Central Plaza to the Practical Exam Area was Class 1-A, geared up and standing with a wary weight over their shoulders. Before them all were the teachers, lined up, and eyeing down the students like a predator to prey, something was off in the air, Yuki could feel it crawling along her skin like ants. Something had changed.
"Now then, let's begin the last test," Mr. Aizawa declared, stuffing a hand in his pocket. "Remember, it's possible to fail this final, if you want to go to camp don't make any stupid mistakes."
"Uh, why are all the teachers here?" Jiro inquired, she shared a glance with Yuki, seeing her eyeing up the staff with even expressions all around, something was off and Yuki could already tell
"I expect many of you have gathered information and believe you have some idea of what you'll be faced with." Mr. Aizawa continued, leading to a few confident cheers
"We're fighting those big ol' metal robots!" Kaminari was ecstatic alongside Mina who was already daydreaming about the camp. This hope last until Eraser's scarf let out a muffled announcement, from within, Principle Nezu popped out cutely, Yuki doing her best not to gush over the adorable Principle
"-the examinations will be completely different for various reasons!" He put his paw high, and that only confirmed the girl's assumptions
"Principle Nezu!?" A number of the class blurted out
"You're changing things!?" Even Yaomomo was caught from a left-field
"The tests now have a new focus-!" He began while scaling down Eraser's body with his scarf, Thirteen helping him down. Izuku tried not to make his smile too obvious at how Yuki struggled not to find it adorable despite the tense situation, she had a soft side for cute things at the worst of times. "-There will be hero work of course, but also teamwork and combat against actual people!" He held his tiny arms wide with a pleasant smile. "So, what does that mean for you? Well, you will be working in pairs, and your opponent with be one of our esteemed UA teachers! Isn't that fabulous!?"
"We're... fighting the teachers!?" Ochaco gaped while everyone's expressions became shell-shocked by the abrupt change
"Additionally, your partners and your opponents have already been chosen. They were determined at my discretion based on various factors, fighting styles, grades, and interpersonal relationships." This was bad on so many levels. Yuki was ready for anything but to fight a teacher, the very people that would know everything about their Quirks inside-and-out was not one on the list, or at the very least, had a minute chance of occurring!
"First, Yaoyorozu and Todoroki are a team," That brought a few eyes their way, just as Eraser tugged on his bindings with a creepy smile. "Against me."
"Oh, come on, I wanted to punch you in your face!" Someone shouted near where Akio and Jiro stood, the former running a hand down his face while Jiro pinched her nose
"Then we have Midoriya paired with Bakugo," If that didn't excite a strong reaction from the pair nothing would as both reflected dumbfounded looks to each other, Yuki blinking between them nervously while pushing the blonde away from exploding too closely. "And their opponent is..." Yuki's systems flared with a gulp
Oh no... | Up above | I think they drew short on this one
With a crash of brick and spandex, the muscled form of All Might towered above them, Izuku jumping back with a gasp, Bakugo just couldn't believe it. "I am here to fight...!"
"We're up against All Might!?" The rivals gaped with distinctive levels of fear
"Of course, with there recently being a new addition to the class the number is somewhat uneven, but after a discussion, the teachers and I came to an agreement," Yuki shook her head slowly at the grin on Mr. Aizawa's face, her own feet rooted at the familiar roar above her. "Azuru will be the only one to fight on her own based on her strength to work with just about anyone, she has the most versatile Quirk in the class, so the only person suitable to take her on is..."
Another ground-pounding rush of wind struck the students, and all could see the fear lace the mute's eyes as the silver sheen refracted the sunlight, the large, trident wings folding against the metallic back of the hero now facing the girl with a fanged grin of a devil.
"Me," Even her voice was far less human, a pair of ultramarine eyes glowering from within the falcon-like helmet. Valstrax, Yuki had to face her own Mother in a one-on-one battle. The look Yuki could detect from within the intimidating aura of indomitable willpower was the look, not of a Mother, but of a hero who is willing to put her all into this fight. Yuki had one weakness, her Mom knew her inside and out, every strategy fell into the single digits
With the big reveal out of the way, it was time for the other rounds, a large screen above the doors coming to life at the Principle's paw. "And now, let's announce the teams and the teachers they'll be fighting in order!"
/Round 1 Team Sato & Kirishima vs. Cementoss\\
/Round 2 Team Azuru vs. Valstrax\\
/Round 3 Team Asui & Tokoyami vs. Ectoplasm\\
/Round 4 Team Iida & Ojiro vs. Power Loader\\
/Round 5 Team Todoroki & Yaoyorozu vs Eraser Head\\
/Round 6 Team Uraraka & Aoyama vs. Thirteen\\
/Round 7 Team Ashido & Kaminari vs. Nezu\\
/Round 8 Team Koda & Jiro vs. Present Mic\\
/Round 9 Team Hagakure & Akio vs. Snipe\\
/Round 10 Team Shoji & Sero vs. Midnight\\
/Round 11 Team Midoriya & Bakugo vs. All Might\\
"Great, I'm fighting in the second round, that's barely enough time to think of anything!" Yuki felt her odds stacked against her, this was nearly as bad as the Hosu Incident, where all probabilities weren't favoring her victory. Then again, if life for her was never a challenge she'd have never made it this far
"To complete the exam you'll have thirty minutes," Nezu then procured a pair of acupuncture cuffs. "In order to win your objective is to put these handcuffs on your teacher or you can win if one of you manages to escape the combat stage."
Yuki and Izuku thought similarly. "It's an easy way to avoid a fight but it's obvious the teachers will prioritize the exit."
Kaminari contemplated it. "So we either have to capture the teacher or run away? It's basically like the combat training."
"Yeah, but is it really okay to just jet?"
Nezu held up his thumb. "Yep."
"It's gonna be much harder than that combat training y'all went through earlier, after all-" President Mic started to pose
"Ugh, here we go... and Eraser thought I was insufferable?" Akame ran her sharpened nails over her helmet's beak
"-you're up against people waaay cooler than you!" He finished with his arms tucked up to his shoulders, trying to agitate his students
Jiro didn't seem oddly pleased by that remark, "'Better', really? Wait, aren't you just the announcer?" Kota tried to wave for her to stop but it was already done
"HEY! WATCH YOUR MOUTH GIRL, HAVE SOME RESPECT!" As his namesake his voice boomed across the pavement, startling Akio and his shadow as both hid behind Jiro, the girl blinking widely
"This time your exam will be tailored closely to a real battle," Thirteen put a hand on her chest. "It may not sound nice but think and act as though we were villains."
"Assuming you come across your enemy if you think you can win against them then fight, however..." A few of the students were starting to hate how they kept trailing off as if the tension wasn't high already and waiting to snap at any given time
"In instances where it would be easier to run away and find help are also effective," His dull yet knowledgeable eye locked to three of his students. "Todoroki, Iida, Midoriya, I'm sure the three of you understand?"
While Yuki didn't exactly agree with the teacher's way of thinking in referencing Hosu, if you can do what's right, save a life in front of you, then take that jump if there's no other possible way they can be saved. Sure, in many instances it may not apply, and that running away is the best option, but from what Izuku told her it was abundantly clear that if they ran, by the time anyone showed Iida and the Pro would have been dead, and that alone would have only made the situation far worse to bear.
With a hand on Iida's shoulder, Yuki gave the armored Rep a pat as he closed his fist, standing tall. "I will not make the same mistake again, I will pass this test and prove that I'm a hero."
"So we fight to win or run to win." Izuku summed up nicely, but words and actions could never be more indifferent than they were today
"That's right, it's a test of your decision-making skills!" All Might declared, then put his finger up. "But with these stakes, you probably think your only way to win is to flee. That's why the support course redesigned the prototype devices from yours and young Akio's exam against Valstrax!"
"With these newly outfitted compressed weights will add about half our body weight to our physiques, it's not much but they will eat up our stamina and make it harder for us to move around!" All Might had double the weights and his arm immediately tugged down, causing his body to jitter. "Oh shoot, these are heavier than I thought!"
"The contest for these devices was held and Young Hatsumei won!" That seemed to surprise Izuku, though Yuki knew never to approach that girl unless it was important. She was eccentric about support modifications, so much so Yuki was almost blasted through seven walls due to one of her 'Babies'.
In the end, everyone either split apart to come up with plans or made their way to the training grounds dedicated to their exam. For Yuki she was lost on what to do since her exam came up after the first round she might as well head to Training Ground Beta with Kirishima and Sato since both their exams took place in the same plot and Cementoss could repair any damages afterward.
"Yuki!" She paused to look over her shoulder to see Izuku wave to her with a beaming smile, and her thoughts immediately rushed back to his unexpected kiss to her cheek, sending static to her heart, bringing back a shy smile to boost her morale. "Good luck!" Ocha also waved to her, increasing the mute's spirits further
She brought her hand up and closed it into a fist akin to a wave, then took her leave down the road a few meters behind Kirishima and Sato to let them focus on their exam, leaving her to ponder on her own strategies against the mind-reader that was her Mother. If she had that power too it wouldn't surprise her in the slightest.
On her way she put her head back to find the ever-so-graceful Dumb-Dumb behind her, scowling ahead until their eyes met and it only worsened. "What?" Hearing this, Yuki knew she was gonna regret asking...
'You not atleast gonna hear him out, huh?' At the blatantly stupid question, he scoffed, tucking his hands into his pockets
"I don't have time to listen to one of Deku's stupid plans, he shouldn't even be here, and every day only pisses me off, including you." As always, his fury was unhinged and Yuki just didn't know why. He thought Izuku looked down on him because of his power because he helped him when he didn't need it, his pride is toxic and Yuki...
Sighing, she stopped herself and faced Bakugo evenly. He looked about ready to say something to Yuki, even so, if there was any shred of kindness or sensibility in him she'd atleast try, she wasn't Izuku, she may know about their past but not the inner workings of their emotions, of their relationship. But she had to try.
'I lost everything when I was eight years old, Kovik... took the lives of my parents, my sister hasn't woken up from a coma in all that time, and... if not for my Quirk I would be dead, tch, without my Quirk I wouldn't even be able to stand right now' Bakugo kept silent, reading the words as they were flipped around. 'I wanted to fucking die'
The next note appeared but he examined her features. Cold eyes with a furious flame caged in her pupils, the frown trying to stay firm despite the painful truth, all of this was something he neglected to care about, there was no reason to, hell, he should just push past her but he didn't.
'I gave up on living, or... I did, yet when my Quirk manifested it was my second chance to do better, to learn from all the times I had taken my life for granted, nothing came for free, the world is a bitch and I played to its tune and paid the price' She turned the page, fingers creasing the paper. 'So I'm here because I had nothing, I crawled with my bare hands, I grew stronger on my own terms and took back my life'
'I'm not telling you to work with Izuku, and I'm not trying to guilt-trip you - I know you wouldn't care' That shut his mouth. 'But my strength, no matter how great, no matter how strong I get won't be enough to win every fight, sometimes relying on others to cover your blind spots can mean the difference between victory or defeat, that's what you should consider while you can'
It was the last words that kept him on that sidewalk the longest, shoved into his hands like dead weight. 'You want to win more than anyone, to be the greatest hero, the one that is unbeatable yet you're facing an indomitable enemy? Then stop fucking around and start looking in the mirror because the only person you're going to lose to is yourself, not to me, not to Izuku, not to All Might but yourself!'
Yuki put a hand to her heart as she walked away, she knew why they isolated her, pitted her against the person that knows her best, because if she can't even beat her Mom, then one day her luck will run dry. "I need to take a page from Bakugo, and risk it all to beat Valstrax!"
Then I shall leave it all in your hands | I will do what you instruct | But you are on your own otherwise
That was fine with her, she had an idea.
In the end, Kirishima and Sato lost much to Yuki's saddened sigh, they tried to bulldoze a man that can construct a city with ease, she can't blame them for trying until the end. Now, however, she stepped through the gates, a pair of cuffs on her belt as she slipped the mask over her face, and immediately picked up on Valstrax waiting in the clouds.
"This is it... just me and my Quirk." Yuki shook her head, preparing at the wailing siren
~TEAM AZURU. PRACTICAL EXAM. READY? GO!~
"SIVA, Enhance, Thirty Percent!" Yuki's forearms, feet, and eyes all filled and warped under the nanomachines, a surge of scarlet crackling over her body by the time she heard the faint roar of an engine above. The clouds shifted sharply with a faint flicker of sunlight
Yuki ran down the main road, keeping to the center of the street by the time she saw the shadow slash by. Taking a massive dive across the tarmac the road behind was obliterated in an instant with a dying roar of draconic might, many windows shattered, and several red blasts tore apart the buildings.
"Here I come hero!" Yuki turned, facing down the scarlet overlapping the blue gaze within the steely scales. "Now you face the Sky Comet Dragon!" The hero's daughter forgot her Mom likes being dramatic
There wasn't a second to lose. Yuki lunged with a blade and shield, deflecting the first overhead wing carving down the face of her buckler, while her scabbard parried the second, drawing close for a slant to the chest if not for two feet pressing firmly to her mask, shoving the girl backward as Valstrax flicked her tail, setting her back onto the earth.
From the bowels of Valstrax's chest into her wings sprung a torrent of red flames, passing over Yuki's head with searing heat, demolishing the building behind her. Through the smoke Yuki brought her lower arms to bear, firing a burst of her own energy balls that were merely striking where Valstrax once was, her body effortlessly weaving through the sky. The girl scrambled for the smaller road to her left as a slick tail split the concrete, slicing her shield and a lampost in two.
Valstrax spun in the air, sweeping the entire area with her tail and a barrage of targetted blasts, knocking Yuki forward from the shockwave as talons sliced the back of her armor, the hero landing ahead of her with a malicious glare. Luckily, Yuki dived higher than the talons sinking into the road, bringing a Perfected Divide across the backside of her left-wing, their metal limbs screeching with blue and red sparks. Yuki followed with an ax-kick, only for a hand to snag her ankle and smash her through a window.
"Hey, Izuku, did we miss much - wow." Kyoka stopped herself upon seeing the devastation created by Valstrax. The emerald-haired boy acknowledged the rocker and Akio as he gave a peace sign then directed his eyes to the screens
"Hey, Akio, Kyoka - No, it's just started."
"She's actually getting serious off the bat, huh," Akio was surprised by this since it was hard for the Sky Comet hero to take things so seriously. "Guess she's really wanting her daughter to pull out the stops."
"Yeah... poor Yuki keeps getting tossed around." Ochaco sighed while Recovery Girl tapped her cane to the girl's wrist
"That's why she's being so hard on the girl, if she can't learn to fight knowing no one can save her it might very well kill her someday," The old woman's words were harsh but true
"What do you mean?" Kyoka asked and instead, Izuku answered, his hand over his chin while he spectated the one-sided skirmish with growing concern and interest but an overwhelming amount of hope for Yuki
"She's always fought until she broke bones because a part of her is subconsciously aware someone will save her, be it her own power, a pro or us, but when she fights alone she locks up and tries to draw a fight to a place where that mindset is plausible," Izuku warned them grimly
"You figured that out from the Hosu Incident?" Akio asked, but his shadow's eye leered at the fanboy's solemn shake
"Yuki did..."
Not exactly the way Yuki wanted to - Clang! - Be facing - Clang! - Her - Clang! - Mother! The fourth wing slash against her shock absorbers shattered the joints, performing a handstand Yuki swung both legs around with a crimson glow, the kicks blindsiding the wings, lowering one for Yuki to sweep over a burst of energy while carving through the spines with four blades, the tail swishing round to shatter two and shove the girl back from Valstrax.
Flying back Yuki lobbed two energy spheres before the hero could use a barrage from the wing thrusters. A wing swept her off her feet, slapping her through the ceiling like a hand, followed by another hole as two wings brought the walls inside the building down. She gasped as the silver blur slammed into her stomach, wings already folded as both tore through several buildings in a matter of seconds, the four one Valstrax spun herself to a stop, latching her daughter between two of the wing blades as she tossed her through a window and out onto a street.
The strength behind Valstrax's limited abilities was still intense, while her physcial attacks and speed were slowed, this didn't limit her power in using gravity and velocity to her advantage, Something Yuki struggled to hold up against.
One left cross with her blades deflected a right hook, followed by a snap-kick that actually broke a few scales as Yuki sliced across Valstrax's thigh with a spin. Yuki repeated the low spin under a sharp wing thresh, striking the tail, seeing a few scales chip. Vaulting with the quick conjuration of her polearm, Yuki drove the point down between Valstrax's forearms, the claws locking the shaft before pulling down, blinding by four energy balls to the face.
The student ran for her right, evading the hypercharge again but the stomp of those talons forced her to cross my arms, the red and silver streak breaking her gauntlets as shrapnel pierced her arms and pushed her to the ground. Yuki watched as Valstrax dove backward into a swan dive, posing both wings to an arrowhead to split the earth where the girl previously sat.
With a groan, Yuki stood up, clutching her bloody arms that gradually healed but her stamina was slowly draining, she couldn't keep up this hit-and-run tactic. Her Mom was smarter when she wasn't talking, her eyes were never unfocused, she joked and made terrible antics that put Yuki to shame, but she was a hero that embodied valor. Her silver coat a mark of a crested warrior of the sky.
"You've gotten stronger, Yuki," Her Mom's voice threw her off, but she was still on guard. "I'm proud of you."
Yuki would feel alot happier about that, but she was bleeding, had been tossed through concrete, and was starting to run on fumes. SIVA sped up recovery but that meant her cells were working overtime. "I don't take risks, I'm afraid to die, I always put too much faith someone behind me would save me, I had subconsciously come to accept that as fact, that's why I'm alone, even though you're here SIVA."
Without realizing it, a large wall of red draconic energy crashed into her unaware body, every bump and unnatural bend of her limbs crumpling to the floor hurt, but her mind simply echoed, drifting with bits and pieces of her mind as she fell to the earth.
"This is the only way... I had any chance of winning..." Izuku's words and expression had them both stricken with shock. "I had to keep her safe... I don't want to kill you... no matter what..."
"A real hero!" All Might descended from the sky, Nomu intercepted from the ground. Nomu was struck under the chin, throwing him back. All Might blocked a punch with both arms, pushing Nomu up high. "Will always find a way for justice to be served!"
"Can I laugh again?"
Yes | You | Can
Host | Us | Together
Valstrax fanned out her wings, red embers scattered like roses with each step, the vents in her chest doing the same as the red contrail spilled from her eyes. Then the wind picked up, creating a hot funnel between her wings and the source of the implosion of wind.
"SIVA is mine to control now..." Yuki released a hot breath of static, the metal on her armor changing yet again, bending into a different shape than before as it pulled at the pipes revealed in the seams abruptly rooted from their battle, clusters spreading and infecting the materials. "You're the best, Mom, which is why I will defeat you! I didn't just rush into this exam without a plan!" Her fingers drew blood from how tense her fingers curled.
Valstrax broke the sound barrier in that instance as her foot swung across the road. "Like I'll let you just power up - H-huh?" Her foot connected with a scattering of nanites, Yuki's body a mere projection that blew away under the force of her wings
"SIVA, Enhance, Sixty-Five Percent!" Metal groaned as her hips adjusted to the weight, her mask converted to a visor shaped like a hawk, the glow of her optics slit into the sides of the curved helmet
All spectators stared with astonishment at the transformation. Yuki's armor had morphed, now several fins lined her back, a pair of sharp, triangular wings split with a roar of plasma from vents located between the wings and inside the frame itself. Her armor became jagged to reduce turbulence, blades jutting from her elbows and knees, her armor slimmed down, revealing more of her curves while reducing drag it made her defense drop considerably.
With a powerful gust from the wings, releasing a powerful howl of crimson, Yuki hunched and braced herself for the steady build-up inside her vents. "SIVA, Augment, Valorgod!" Not a second was spent waiting with admiration as the bundle of black and red collided with Valstrax, tearing her back into the open air.
The second Yuki tore her enemy from the land her vision clouded with red as the force of the blast threw her away, a silver gleam stripping down by her side. Valstrax twirled, bringing down an intense heat that was quickly dashed by Yuki's boot in her face, vents expelling more energy as their bodies traveled farther. Through the flames still stuck to her, the hero reeled her tail horizontally, so with a flip, Yuki pushed back with a blast of her own, digging her fist into Valstrax's arm, then a knee to slice against her scales while Yuki's vents roared, spinning the girl like a crimson sword, splitting a number of the hero's scales, her own shin coiled round to crack against Yuki's visor.
Gliding along Valstrax's side, Yuki's hands crackled with excess energy too, a blinding blast to cover her sharp descent only to tackle from below, snapping a few talons with a sharp kick as she passed by a backswing of her Mom's powerful wings. Valstrax arced backward, tail only just scratching her visor while a tremendous burst dispersed the clouds, providing the girl with a clear view of the hands grabbing ahold for a headbutt, splitting the visor further, as one of Valstrax's wings split like a hand, pinching Yuki's right-wing as she felt the connect tear, a gash splitting through her armor and skin.
"Sorry, Yuki," She didn't want to hear it, not when she still had some fight left. Even with her thrashing, her Mom's grip remained firm. "It's over, hero." She let her go to plummet to her defeat, the fall wouldn't kill her but it sure as well will incapacitate her
Yuki didn't accept it all. Her right fingers hooked to her Mom's foot, tugging her up and behind her back where her wings couldn't quite reach. From there, Yuki tackled the left-wing, pumping a number of dormant clusters into one of the vents, triggering the last as she hopped with her arms wrapped around her Mom's neck as the wings coughed, black smoke and dying red embers spat from the maw as she lost her control in her extra limb.
"Grah, what did you-!?" Akame jumped as her daughter slung herself back against her chest, right fist brought back close to her side as the digits and glove peeled and bubbled with untamed power. "Yukiiiii!" Her hands tried to shove her off but to no avail with the weights
"Perfected Smash, Eighty Percent!"
Her entire hand jittered and screamed with lines of code blinding her for a mere second. Striking across the edge of Valstrax's chest vents the force of the impact severed them from the woman, exposing just her skin-tight clothing underneath as the shards were disintegrated alongside Yuki's right hand, now shattered and left a sparking stump, but it was over, Yuki and Valstrax were plummeting toward the earth with neither having the ability to fly.
Pushing off her Mom Yuki pressed her boots down hard on her stomach, with her remaining wing she unleashed a massive torrent of red energy that split and scorched the sky, increasing their already rapid descent with a cone of wind beginning to form under Valstrax's back. Even as she tried in vain to rid Yuki, the girl kept her feet hooked to the woman under her, bracing the pain a few seconds more.
"Heh, not bad, kiddo..."
*BOOM!*
The air screamed and rubble rained from the sky with showers of glass from the sheer decibel their reentry reached, a large crater minimized to just the road, the impact was kept to a minimum at the last second by Yuki reducing their speed with what little power she could spend. But it was over, for as the dust cleared, Yuki fell to her knees, panting and with half her mask tore to pieces as the augments crumbled, and her body reverted back to flesh and blood say for her right hand which remained a stump.
Behind her, the cuffs lay strapped to the unconscious Valstrax, her eyes closed while her own body slowly shrunk and the scales reverted back to plain old silver armor say for the pieces shattered or missing.
~TEAM AZURU. PRACTICAL EXAM. COMPLETED~
With that, Yuki herself passed out on the spot, closing her eyes beside her Mom, again, without realizing one blue eye stared back at her, raising a cuffed hand to pat Yuki's blue hair with a small chuff.
"You broke your hand to beat me, and risked your own life in my playing field, heh, not bad, my little flower." Akame giggled to herself, slumping back onto the tarmac. "Can someone come get us, I'm too tired to move right now, and these stupid weights are really heavy..."
To Be Continued...
I love writing Akame fighting, just like the terror of fighting Valstrax, course I didn't make it all ground-based, and it actually proved to be an advantage for Yuki as the weights added to both Akame's wrists, ankles, and wings kept her very nimble body sluggish which is what makes her a terror to villains, it was also the reason she stuck mainly to using her energy attacks.
As for what she said to Bakugo that will be discovered next as the fight with All Might won't entirely the same way. I hope you enjoyed, appreciate the support, and seeya in the next chapter, Plus Ultra!
