So, it turned out that having a conniving monk on the team wasn't such a bad idea after all. By about the fourth nice tavern we were able to find free food and accommodations in I had clued into Miroku's game. He would come in, all doom and gloom, telling the owner of the establishment that their business was being poisoned by a looming, evil spirit. With the promise of an exorcism, the owner was often all too glad to give us food and board in return. Miroku had a knack for picking the nicest places, and for that I was extremely grateful.

Also, Inuyasha had yet to catch on.

Two weeks of this kind of traveling was a huge improvement to camping out in the forest. I was by no means afraid to rough it, but the convenience of hot food (other than stew and soup), a soft bed, and a warm bath was too good to pass on.

We were currently in a village located on the coast, the sun setting as Miroku worked about the tavern to ward away the 'evil spirit' hovering over it. I looked out from where I stood on the front deck of our room, the sun setting over the ocean. It was beautiful, and the sound of the waves was soothing. Taking in a deep breath of the salty air, I was reminded of my first trip to the ocean when I was much younger. Mother and Aunt Miyu had taken our families out for a day trip. It had been just after Kagome and Sota's Father had died.

"What are you standing out here for?" Inuyasha asks as he comes to stand next to me, the fiery orange of the sunset causing his skin to glow like mine. I glance towards him, noting how handsome he looked in the light, before quickly turning my gaze back to the sunset before I could get caught starring.

"It's just so beautiful." I reply simply, shrugging my shoulders. "I've always loved the ocean, but I only saw it once when I was a child."

"What's so special about it?" Inuyahsa asks then, his arms falling to his sides as he relaxes.

"It's just…I don't know…the wonder I suppose. It feels like you're at the ends of the earth…it makes me feel so small." I murmur, wrapping my arms around myself. "It's just a good reminder that there are things out there much bigger than you, but it's a peaceful reminder on nights like tonight."

"It is a nice night." Inuyasha agrees, his amber eyes suddenly shifting from the setting sun towards me. I don't have to look to feel his gaze on me, and after a few moments it feels unnerving. What was he looking at? What was he thinking? I wrap my arms tighter around myself. "Are you cold?" He asks suddenly, and before I can tell him no, he has moved. He comes to stand behind me, his arms slowly, almost hesitantly, moving around my middle from behind. I tense for a moment, wondering what he was doing, before relaxing almost instantly when I feel his warm chest press against my back. Inuyasha's sleeves of his kimono are so large that they almost cover my entire body, blocking out the slight breeze from the ocean completely. He moves his head ever so slowly to the right against mine, and I feel electricity shoot through me when his cheek touches against the side of my head.

This felt really nice.

That was the first thought to coherently form in my racing mind. I relax my arms, moving slowly to gently rest them over his own. He tenses for only a moment, before relaxing against my back once more as I allow myself to lean back against him slightly. This moment seemed so fragile, like it could break with any sudden movement. I knew it would if Shippo or Miroku would happen upon us. He'd no doubt jump away from me, stuttering out excuses of why he was holding me like this.

'I used to love when he held me in his arms like he is holding you now.' Mayumi's sad thought drifts into my head, and I instantly feel guilt wash over me.

What am I doing?

Turning my head slightly, my forehead touching his chin, I speak softly. "Should we get back to the others?" I ask, trying not to sound as disappointed as I felt.

"No. Let's stay here a while longer. I want to watch the sun set." Inuyasha's reply shocks me to the core, his arms tightening around me as if to stop me from running away. My selfishness overruns my guilt from moments before.

I wanted to enjoy this too, and I didn't want to feel guilty about it.

I turn my head forward once more, letting it rest back against his shoulder as the sun continued to slowly lower below the horizon of the ocean. No more words are spoken as the world slowly enters into night, the last sliver of the sun disappearing and the stars starting to shine brightly above.

"I'm glad I fell into that well." I finally murmur after what felt like hours of standing there with him. Now I was happy for the warmth he provided as the chilly night air settled around us. I feel him shift slightly behind me after hearing what I said, his head lowering so his warm cheek was pressed against my own.

"Me too." It's whispered, almost to the point I thought I had imagined hearing it. My eyes go wide, and I slowly turn to look at him. His face is so close to my own, his lips nearly brushing against mine as he turns his head to face me as well, his forehead coming to rest against my own. I close my eyes, the feeling of his warm breath washing over my face and the smell of pine completely drowning me.

"Food is ready!" Shippo's voice cries out from behind us, inside of our room. As I predicted, Inuyasha's head snaps away from my own, his arms dropping from around me. Feeling at a loss, my throat closes up slightly with disappointment, and even a little hurt. He turns without a word, head bowed as he moves into our group's room.

'He's ashamed.' Chewing on my lower lip I force my eyes from his back, looking over towards the ocean once more as the moon's reflection bounced off of the waves. 'He's ashamed of me.' Tears burn at the corners of my eyes, my chest squeezing tight.

'He's confused.' Mayumi replies gently to me, her voice soothing. 'He was like that with me as well, when he was deciding whether or not he still loved Kikyo. It was painful.' She admits, but somehow that just makes me feel worse, rather than better.

'I get it. He is your's.' I can't help snapping then, hands tightening into fists. 'You've made it clear.'

'Yua, that's not what I-'

'No? So your comment earlier about how he holds me like he held you wasn't supposed to be a reminder that I'm just a replacement?' I bite out, a tear breaking lose as I blink my eyes and streaking down my cheek. 'I get it. He's only acting the way he is with me because he wants you back.'

'No, that's not it at all.' Mayumi replies firmly.

'Then how come everything he does with me, you tell me he did with you? The touching of our foreheads, the way he treats me, the way he holds me. It all tells me that he's treating me like I'm you!' Mayumi's silence is all the confirmation I need to know she couldn't argue otherwise. That it was true. 'I'm falling for a guy who's acting like he's falling in love with me, but he's just falling in love with you all over again.'

"Yua?" Miroku's voice comes from behind me, concern easily heard in his voice. "Aren't you going to come and get something to eat?"

"I'll be in, in a few minutes." I answer, keeping my back to him. Luckily my voice was steadier than I thought it would have been, and Miroku doesn't ask any more questions before turning inside himself. Sighing heavily I tilt my head back in exasperation, wiping roughly at the tear that was still hanging onto my jaw. Giving myself a few moments for my eyes to dry up, I finally turn into the room as well, sitting down next to Shippo to pick away at some food. In truth, it was for show, because the moment I swallowed anything I honestly felt like I was going to throw up. Glancing towards Inuyasha, I notice he's hardly touched his own food as well.

"Why are you pouting, Inuyasha? Upset that Miroku has done another good job of finding us food and a place to sleep?" Shippo asks slyly, thankfully breaking the rising tension. Inuyasha casts him an annoyed look from where he sat with Tessaiga in his lap against the wall by the door.

"Hardly." Inuyasha scoffs, Miroku grinning into his rice, but thankfully not saying anything. Inuyasha, however, catches the sly grin, a frown settling on his face as he stands and steps over towards Miroku. He kneels beside me, using Tessaiga to brace himself as he stares at the monk with narrowed eyes. "I'm on to you, by the way."

'Finally, took him long enough.' I think to myself dryly as I take a sip of my tea. Miroku doesn't even look phased as he works on the dumplings in front of him.

"Whenever we're looking for a place to bed-down, you suddenly detect an ominous cloud hanging over whatever seems to be the finest tavern in the area! How is that?" Inuyasha demands, Miroku looking to him then and blinking innocently.

"Oh. You noticed that, did you?" I hide my smile behind my cup of tea at Miroku's lightly sarcastic tone. "They say a falsehood is sometimes the expedient path!" He laughs, waving it off. Inuyasha, however, looks offended and even surprised.

"You mean there never was any black cloud?!" Shippo exclaims in surprise as well.

'Okay, the kid I get, it's okay that he didn't catch on. But seriously, Inuyasha?' I think to myself, laughing inwardly as his surprised expression quickly turns to one of irritation.

"Geeze, you're shiftier than I thought!" Inuyasha proclaims, narrowing his eyes as the monk once more. Miroku holds up his platter of dumplings.

"Partake in my portion of the spoils and your opinion of me might soften." He offers Inuyasha easily, but the half dog demon simply looks at him utterly bewildered.

"Don't mind if I do!" Shippo cruises in, grabbing one of the dumplings for himself.

"You're just as bad as he is!" Inuyasha exclaims, looking down at Shippo angrily. I can't help laughing then, the sound catching his attention.

"Calm down, already. You didn't notice the other dozens of times, did you? And you ate and slept without complaint." I reply easily.

Suddenly the very earth begins to shake under us.

Shippo drops the dumpling, racing back across the room and into my now open arms. I hold onto the trembling boy tightly, looking across towards Miroku and Inuyasha as they both frowned.

"I don't like the sounds of this!" Shippo whimpers, pressing his face into my neck. The candles fall, the room going dark.

"Whatever it is, it's big." Inuyasha states solemnly, standing as he threads Tessaiga through his belt on his kimono.

"Indeed." Miroku agrees. "Let's run." He adds seriously, and even I have to look at the monk in disbelief.

"What?" Inuyasha growls, frowning. "You can't just eat and run!"

"If the demon is truly as big as it sounds, we're no match for it. It's irrational, it's impossible, it's against my religion." Miroku finishes, his hand held up under his chin in a semblance of a prayer.

"You ought to be arrested." Inuyasha mutters, clearly unimpressed. Suddenly it hits me, the energy of the Sacred Jewel.

"Whatever it is has a jewel shard!" I gasp, eyes wide.

"Well that's a change. We've never had them bring us the jewel shards before." Inuyasha smirks, turning towards the doorway.

"I suppose if there is a jewel fragment involved, I could make a little effort!" Miroku changes his tune quickly, Inuyasha raising an eyebrow.

"No, I'm going to check it out." He argues, Miroku trying to move past him as he blocks the monk.

"No, I insist."

"No, I insist."

Rolling my eyes I walk by both of the men with no problem, Shippo moving to perch himself on my shoulder. I feel my breath catch in my throat as I see what exactly was attacking the village below. A very familiar, massive, three fingered and clawed hand comes down on the temple on the hillside. Inuyasha and Miroku, finally seeing that I was gone, come rushing out behind me as the monster steps over the nearby mountain like it's a simple hill.

'The scars…' I recognize almost instantly the markings on the hundred foot monster's face, looking towards it's shoulder as my thoughts are confirmed. 'Sesshomaru…' The dog demon's gaze hardens as he sees me, a snarl slowly appearing on his face. 'And apparently he hasn't forgotten me.' I think nervously, grabbing Shippo and putting him on the ground. "Go and find somewhere to hide!" I instruct, Shippo frowning in confusion.

"Who is that?" He asks, pointing his finger up towards Sesshomaru.

"Sessohmaru!" Inuyasha's yell echoes over us as he leaps from the front of the tavern, landing directly in front of Shippo and I.

"It's his half-brother." I answer Shippo with a frown. "He's dangerous."

"No kidding! He's a full dog demon!" Shippo states, sounding equally impressed and anxious. Inuyasha sends the fox demon a slight glare over his shoulder, prompting the boy to finally do as I ask and race back towards the tavern to find a hiding spot. Miroku stood by my side now, his staff at the ready as Inuyasha draws Tessaiga. Sesshomaru jumps off of the shoulder of his beast, his right hand glowing as he glides towards the ground.

"His poison claws!" I exclaim, frowning as I grab at Miroku's sleeve. "We gotta move, now!" I pull him, only letting go when he follows me, Inuyasha leaping after us away from where his half brother's hand makes contact with the ground. The poisonous fumes erupt from the contact, just barely missing us as we step out of it's lethal zone. Miroku grabs me around the waist, leaping with us both over the small hill, Inuyasha turning sharply in front of it to face his brother. Once safely away, Miroku lets me go, his body tense and ready for a fight.

"I wouldn't if I was you." I comment softly to him, frowning deeply. "That's Inuyasha's half-brother, Sesshomaru. They aren't exactly on friendly terms."

"I couldn't tell." Miroku comments dryly as he stands behind the mounds of dirt in front of us.

"I see you've kept that woman around." Sesshomaru frowns as he looked over Inuyasha's shoulder towards me. I meet his cold stare head on. "And that you are still slow to take action, little brother." Inuyasha growls low in his chest, his body stiff as he stands across from the poisonous crater that Sesshomaru had created.

"To what honor do we owe this visit?" He asks sarcastically, ignoring Sesshomaru's jibes at him.

"Spare me the feigned innocence. I'm here for the Tessaiga of course." Sesshomaru declares coldly.

"Still haven't given up on that, huh?" Inuyasha asks, brandishing Tessaiga in a gloating manner. Shippo appears next to me, having been hiding by the tree up until this point.

"Will you surrender it now, without the need for a battle?" Sesshomaru asks calmly, Inuyasha's eyes narrowing further.

"No chance. This time I'll take off more than just one of your arms!" He promises, before leaping into the air, holding Tessaiga over his head. He comes down, Sesshomaru dodging out of the way smoothly at the last minute so his sword connected with the ground. Taking a quick swipe to the right, he misses again, Sesshomaru's movements fluid.

"Such a pity." Sesshomaru states after dodging Inuyasha's wild strike once again. "I see you have yet to unleash the full power of the Tessaiga." I tilt my head in question hearing him.

Full power? What on earth did he mean by that?

"Oh yeah? Let's see about that!" Inuyasha refutes, charging once again towards his brother. Sesshomaru doesn't dodge this time, instead turning and grabbing onto Inuyahsa's wrist with his poison claws.

"Such pitiful swordsmanship." Sesshomaru insults coldly. "The little man is having trouble holding his sword." My eyebrows shoot up at that.

'Oh…that was an insult.' I think to myself, knowing for a fact that Sessohmaru was taking a shot at Inuyasha's manliness. Inuyasha starts to cry out in pain as Sesshomaru's poisoned claws eat away at the skin of his wrist.

"They flesh is burning from his wrist!" Miroku observes in shock, and I frown even more.

"Your wrist or the sword. Which will be the first to drop?" Sesshomaru asks calmly, Inuyasha wincing in pain. Without a second thought I summon my aura into the familiar form of a bow and arrow, drawing it back and taking aim at Sesshomaru's back. I let the arrow fly, Sesshomaru completely oblivious to my attack until it was too late. My arrow made of my energy hits him squarely in the left shoulder, his eyes widening momentarily in shock, before narrowing in anger as my arrow dissolves against his burning skin.

'It barely left a scratch!' I think in amazement, knowing the other demons I had come up against had suffered much worse with that attack. His robe was burned away at his shoulder, revealing the torn skin and muscle from my arrow, but the width of the wound was only the size of my own hand. Inuyasha takes the moment of surprise, finally able to overpower him even if he couldn't get Sesshomaru to let go of his wrist. He pushes his older half brother backwards.

"I'll slice you in half you sad excuse for a demon!" Inuyasha promises angrily, though Sesshomaru only looks mildly surprised at the sudden burst of energy coming from his younger half brother.

"You should have surrendered." Sesshomaru growls, before leaping away and disengaging himself from Inuyasha. He jumps into the air, using his demonic energy as a whip to attack. Due to his weakened grip, Inuyasha looses the sword at the second crack of the whip, Tessaiga flying yards away to land blade first in the dirt. Sesshomaru moves quickly, landing directly behind the sword.

"Oh no." Inuyasha gasps, actually sounding worried as his amber eyes widened in shock. The breath catches in my own throat as I feel frozen on the spot.

But he shouldn't be able to pick it up, should he?

Its when he holds out what should have been his severed left arm, that things started to fall into place.

"Is that a human arm?" I gape in shock. Was that some sort of medieval transplant?! Everything seems to move in slow motion as he reaches for Tessaiga, and eventually is able to wrap his hand around the handle.

"Impossible!" Inuyasha exclaims, just as surprised as the rest of us. It even transforms for the demon brother, and he twirls fluidly, unleashing some sort of attack. Inuyasha jumps out of the way just in time, the earth beneath him breaking into pieces and during to dust.

There is a clear scar on the ground where the attack had run it's course by the time the dust settles, Inuyasha landing in the same spot he had been standing with the same look of anxious disbelief.

"I am the Tessaiga's rightful owner. Stand back as I demonstrate it's true power." Sesshomaru proclaims, before looking over his shoulder towards his imp servant. "Jaken!"

"Yes milord! I shall summon all the demons from the mountain." Jaken shouts back to him from his spot on the monster's shoulder. The monster turns under Jaken's direction, facing the mountain, before digging it's hand right into the side. When the monster removes it's hand, the side of the mountain starts to glow with the demonic energy of hundreds of demons. Eyes wide, I watch as they all slowly rise up from the depths of the trees.

'How could so many demons be in one place like that?!' I can't help thinking in amazement.

"Witness this and learn from the master, Inuyasha." Sesshomaru states calmly, not at all phased by the number of demons that seemed to just materialize out of nowhere, and keep coming. The Tessaiga glows with a yellow aura, and I feel a shiver run down my spine at the growth of power. "With just one stroke I shall slaughter one hundred demons." With a great swing of the Tessaiga, three scars of energy rush forward towards the demons, disintegrating them upon contact. With wide eyes I watch as Sesshomaru casually holds Tessaiga, his expression calm and collected.

Where the hell had that come from?! He took out an entire mountain!

Inuyasha is equally as stunned, his posture stiff as he slowly looks from where the demons once were, along the large crevice in the earth left by the power of Tessaiga, back to his older half brother.

"It can't be." He states in clear disbelief, his face showing clearly that he was actually feeling intimidated. Sesshomaru notices it as well, a cocky smirk slowly lifting onto his lips.

"The mountain…" Shippo cries out in disbelief from behind Miroku and I, obviously having come out of hiding to witness this. He jumps into my arms then, his little body shaking with fear as he grips at the front of my kimono.

"All the demons…the mountain…it's all gone!" Miroku observes, stunned.

"Now do you see? This sword, forged of our own Father's fang, reigns supreme." Sesshomaru states, his cocky smirk slowly falling. "Unfortunately, Tessaiga is not capable of choosing it's owner." He raises Tessaiga towards Inuyasha. "Perhaps now you, a mere half-bread, realize that you can never master it." Inuyasha's stunned expression quickly turns to one of hate, his eyes narrowing at Sesshomaru as he clenches his hands into tight fists.

'Don't do anything rash in your anger…' I frown deeply in concern, seeing the way his fists were shaking with rage.

"I shall go." Miroku frowns, stepping around me then and towards Inuyasha. I blink in surprise hearing him.

"I doubt he'll let you help." I can't help warning him, even as the monk continues on.

"Both of you make sure you stay behind me." Miroku yells over his shoulder towards us, and I frown even more. Obviously he was planning on using his hand. The question is, would a demon like Sesshomaru fall victim to it? Miroku gives a solemn nod, before returning his attention towards Inuyasha as he makes his way over to him. Smoothly he steps between the two half brothers, throwing Inuyasha completely off-guard.

'It's actually kind of funny, with you think about it.' I can't help inwardly giggling as Inuyasha stutters in bewilderment.

"I cannot allow this to go on any longer." Miroku proclaims, ignoring Inuyasha's stunned babbling from behind him. "I must put an end to this foolish sibling rivalry." I wince at that, slowly making my way down as well then with Shippo now on my shoulder. That might not have been the best thing to say.

"Hey! Butt out!" Inuyasha shouts angrily, and I almost sigh at how predictable his reaction was.

'I told the monk help wouldn't be well received.'

"I can handle this." Inuyasha gripes, moving around Miroku and elbowing him out of the way. Miroku looks less than convinced, and shoves Inuyasha back behind him as the half demon regards him with shock.

"Not on your own you can't." Miroku states, facing Sesshomaru once more with narrowed eyes.

"Back off, creep! I want to stand in the front!" Inuyasha growls, raising one of his fists in frustration. Miroku turns to him, annoyed.

"Don't be such a stubborn mule!"

"Very funny coming from you!"

"Guys? Seriously, you're embarrassing us." I point out, glancing from Sesshomaru to Miroku and Inuyasha, before looking back to Sesshomaru. His gaze is locked on the boys for a moment, before it slowly turns towards me. His eyes are unreadable, but nonetheless intimidating as they slowly trail over my form and size me up much like they had all those months ago in his Father's remains. I could feel the hair on my arms and the back of my neck stand on end, his gaze not as dismissive as it had once been.

I felt naked all of a sudden, and it was extremely uncomfortable.

All of a sudden the large monster behind Sesshomaru began to move, effectively breaking the eye contact as I gaze up at the red eyed beast nervously.

"My lord! Allow me to finish the monk off!" Jaken shouts gleefully from on the monster's shoulder. "No sense wasting your energy on such a feeble opponent."

"As you wish. I will observe." Sesshomaru calmly agrees, never taking his eyes off of our group.

"Onward! Crush them all!" Jaken orders the beast. With a great roar it extends it's arm outwards, the hand overshadowing us as it comes racing down.

"Move back!" Miroku orders, stepping forward and releasing his prayer beads from around his wrist. "Wind Tunnel!" He shouts, opening his palm towards Jaken and the beast. Sesshomaru jumps back, taken by obvious surprise at the power of Miroku's Wind Tunnel, and digs Tessaiga into the ground to steady himself. The monster however, wasn't so lucky, and immediately began to get sucked in.

"What?! No, stop this!" Jaken can be heard crying from the monster's shoulder, scrambling further away while he still could.

"You show him, Miroku!" Shippo cheers on happily, jumping down from my arms to stand in front of Inuyasha and I. I glance towards Inuyasha, before having to hold back a snort of laughter.

He looked so put out.

'I almost feel sorry for the guy.' I think in amusement, before looking back towards Miroku once more. A sudden movement catches my eye, and I see some sort of circular object, different tones of brown, Sesshomaru tossing it up into the air.

'YUA! You need to stop it! That's a nest to poisonous, demonic, wasps!' Mayumi shouts suddenly, and I feel my heart freeze. Without second guessing her, I throw my own hands up, allowing my aura to wrap around the ball then to force the poisonous insects that had been emerging back inside. I frown, closing my hand into a fist slowly, my aura collapsing around the orb and crushing the bugs inside, before it falls to the ground in a crumpled heap.

'How did you know that?!' I ask then with wide eyes.

'They're one of Naraku's tricks.' Mayumi replies solemnly, and my eyes wide in shock.

"Sesshomaru is working with Naraku?" I gasp out loud, catching Inuyasha's attention as he looks to be sharply.

"What did you say?"

"Mayumi said that, that thing that Sesshomaru tossed into the air belongs to Naraku. It was filled with poisonous insects." I frown as I look towards Inuyasha, his eyes narrowing even further as he turns back towards his brother.

"That bastard. Leave it to him to make an alley out of our enemy." He growls lowly as Miroku finishes with sucking up the rest of the monster. Jaken, against all odds, somehow manages to evade the Wind Tunnel.

Fucking figures.

"BLADES OF BLOOD!" Inuyasha shouts out then as he digs the claws of his right hand into his opposite wrist, sending the attack flying towards Sesshomaru. His energy, colored red by his blood, breaks against Tessaiga as the sword easily blocks the attack. Sesshomaru advances, holding out Tessaiga in threat.

"This is the end for all of you." He states coldly, the sword suddenly bursting with energy once more. "Die." He states simply, before swinging the sword forward. I knew there wouldn't be enough time for us to all get away, so I throw my hands up, creating a barrier around us all just as his attack hits. Grunting with effort, I can feel my body shaking as I throw almost all that I have into the protective barrier to keep us safe. When the dust clears we're left standing, surrounded by the destruction caused by Sesshomaru's attack. Releasing the barrier, I breathe heavily, hunching over to brace my hands against my wobbling knees.

"Yua! Are you alright?" Miroku asks in concern, and I feel his hands gripping my shoulder. I nod, unable to speak just yet. Shippo was attached to my one leg, Inuyasha moving to stand directly in front of me, his stance slightly hunched over and ready for the next attack.

'We won't survive another attack like that one. I don't have the energy to protect us.' I weakly move to stand up, before my eyes widen in shock.

Tessaiga was no longer transformed in Sesshomaru's hand.

Instead of the great fang, the dull blade was back, confusing all of us. Sesshomaru even looked confused as he glanced down at the sword, before looking back towards us. His eyes narrow as they land on me behind Inuyasha.

"You…" He growls lowly.

Oh crap.

Soooooo, what do ya think? :P. I can't wait to hear your thoughts on this chapter, and what you think might happen next.
