Whimpering could be heard as the Sunday sun sat, orange and glowing on the horizon. Severus had dozed again. Many of the pack left to handle their duties and only he, Pansy, Cainus, and Arellia remained.

"Dad! Dad!" Carina screamed and fumbled around. She was covered only in a blanket but had been moved to the bed. She was terrified and got herself twisted in the sheets and fell from the bed rolled up in them. She was heaving with dry sobs as Severus bolted upright and flew to his daughter's side.

"I'm here, love, what is it?"

She turned her head to the sound of his voice and Severus gasped. Her eyes were gone. She was completely blind.

"I can't see!"

"Merlin!" Pansy gasped as she woke and went to her sister.

"Master!" Severus called. "Master!"

Lucifer was there in an instant. "What is it, warrior?"

"She's blind, Master, she has no eyes!"

Lucifer knelt on the balls of his feet and inspected Carina's face. "Can you see nothing child? sense nothing in your mind?"

"No, there's nothing, only darkness!" She cried.

"Bring her to the earth temple, Severus." Lucifer disappeared and Severus knelt to pick her up and Pansy stopped him.

"Let her get descent first!" She snapped and sent him outside the room. Pansy helped her sister get dressed as they both cried. "It'll be okay, Carina, we'll get it sorted. Even if the devil can't help you, I won't stop searching until you're whole." Pansy kissed her sister's cheek and let Severus take her away.

He picked up his daughter and carried her close to his chest down all those stairs and into the cavern below the manor. When he arrived, Lucifer and the earth spirit were there waiting. The earth spirit's ethereal voice echoed.

"I can grant her the sight of the wolves and the intuition of the earth, but these gifts need vessels. With out eyes there is nothing to be done."

Carina whimpered.

"I can fashion eyes from stone. They will be indestructible, but I'm afraid they can not be charmed to appear normal. They will be resistant to magic, and a fright to look at. It is the best I can offer. Is this acceptable to you, young Mistress?" Lucifer asked Carina.

She nodded slowly and took in a shaky breath. "Yes, please."

Lucifer looked to the earth spirit and she nodded and beckoned for Severus to lay Carina in the center of the tree carved into the stone floor. He obeyed and Lucifer waved him away.

"I'll return her to you when we are successful. Leave us to our work."

"Thank you, Master." He said and bowed to both Lucifer and the earth spirit. He left the ancients to do their work and waited in the manor's gardens.

It had been hours and the sun was at the other end of the earth now. The blinding light that was a part of Lucifer's very being drew Severus's attention away from the roses. Dante was trotting along side as Lucifer helped to steady Carina as she wobbled to her father's side. He stood and rushed to help her.

"Leave her, Severus. She must learn to use her new sense as though she were born with it." Carina gave Severus a weak smile as she made her way to the bench.

"How are feeling, Carina?" He asked.

"Better than I expected." She looked at her father. Her new eyes worked by detecting heat, energy, and magic. The earth spirit said that with time her mind would learn to translate those into a proper image, but she would only see in shades of red, black and white. This was useful, she said, because it would also help her to detect the moods and intentions of others.

"How does it look?" She asked. "The truth, please. In detail."

Your eyes are black and smooth like glass, and they glow from the inside. Not too bright, though, it wouldn't draw attention unless you're looking. Just a faint orange glimmer." Her father told her.

She blinked and nodded. Lucifer held out a necklace made of wide, delicate silver links and had black silk ribbon tied through each one. Dangling from the end of it was a stone hour glass that glowed red. It swung back and forth as Carina tried to follow the red light with her new eyes. She tried and failed to reach for it a few times before she closed her hand around the glow.

"Your wolf will always be within you, Carina, but as a compromise to your struggle with both it and the fire spirit, I have crafted this. It will house the fire spirit and the wolf has agreed to work with it if the need ever arises. It can be with you in an instant and they promise to bring you as little grief as possible while keeping you safe. But you must promise to wear it, always. You will need to let the fire spirit possess you as you train so you can learn to work with its gifts. Do not fret. You will not burn again. Your body was made ready for it. Your appearance now is a gift from your wolf, but it's not real. while the fire spirit is not with you, will feel normal, but as soon as it possesses you, you will know the difference and you have to practice working with it. Promise me."

"Yes, I promise. Thank you for being so considerate." She whispered as Severus clasped the chain around her neck.

Lucifer gave a nod. "You may want to get her back to school, Severus. It's becoming Monday now." Severus nodded and thanked his master then called for Pansy and the three went back to Hogwarts.

Back at the castle, the sisters and Severus settled into his chambers. After the Pansy and Carina cuddled together on the large couch, Severus went to one side of his living room and started enchanting space for his daughter to move in. "This may be a while." He called over his shoulder.

"Take your time, Severus, we're fine here." Pansy replied. She moved her sister's hair away from her eyes and looked closely at them. "I think they look cool." Pansy grinned.

Carina scoffed. "Right."

"I do! But they are freaky. Don't worry we can just put an illusi-"

"They're resistant to magic, Pans. They have to stay looking like this."

"Oh.. I'm sorry."

"I made the choice." Carina shrugged.

"No, you didn't. Not really. This is Lucifer's doing. He said he'd turn you eventually."

"He didn't know this would happen. No one did. It's no one's fault and the spirits tell me they are better than human eyes. They will make me strong."

"Still. If you were worried about staring before..."

"I'm going to let everyone believe I am truly blind. It could be an advantage, to be the only ones that know. Accept.. I don't think I'll be able to read anymore."

"I'll help you figure something out, don't you worry. I know how you love it. I won't let you be without your books."

Carina smiled. "Thank you."

"Here, you'll want to keep those covered if you want everyone to think you're blind." Pansy tore a wide strip from the black silk lining of her robe. Carina lifted her hair up and Pansy tied the thin silk over her eyes. Carina let her hair fall over the blindfold and blinked.

"Can you still see where I am?" Pansy asked.

"Yes. It's like it's not even there. I see the heat coming off you and dad, down the new hall he just made."

"Well that certainly helps!"

Carina nodded and snuggled deeper into her end of the couch and tried to sleep.
