TWO SEASONS

February 3rd

First day of Spring

みちのべのくち木の柳春くればあはれむかしとしのばれぞする

In a roadside field stands
A leafless willow tree-
Spring will come, and then
The wonders of long ago,
Will all return.

-Willow. Sugawara Michizane

Forty-five kilometers south of the Morioka capital and two hours via Shinkansen from Tokyo, lie the Kitakami City located in Iwate Prefecture. The famous prefecture was known mostly for the blooming season of Sakura coincidentally occurring on the young, cursed spirit manipulator's birth month.

The way to the Getou family's ryokan and onsen allowed them to view the beautiful pink petals dance in the wind. Branches were filled with fresh patterns of flowers that shone when light caught the crystallized dew that rested on them.

Their residence was remote but only because it was positioned in the confluence of the Kitakami River and the Waga River but mostly because the structure was famous for their natural indoor springs.

The Gojo clan members from Miyagi frequented their visits to acclaimed springs due to their healing affinity. On one occasion where Satoru's family joined their relatives at the spring, that's where he and Suguru met and became acquaintances, so the trip actually made the best friends a little sentimental.

As known Jujutsu windows, the Kitakami healing springs and elixir was entrusted to their family but other than that it was only through their son's special grade status that heightened their place in their realm.

It was fortunate that during the first day of Spring in Iwate, where the rain was scarce yet the cold breeze from the mountain and receding snow remained present, the four friends would be able to warm up under the clear blue water that miraculously didn't harden to pure ice during his birthday.

The Getou residence was very spacious though but compared to the surrounding business establishment, it was modest but very quaint. The fresh air and the ambient breeze were very inviting that Suguru's three guests were thrilled that they were invited to stay.

Upon their arrival at the main residence, they were greeted by one of the housekeepers and were directed towards two separate rooms where they were given a change of clothes. Satoru had agreed that they both stay in a shared guest room near the girls' especially since he didn't want to be greeted by a 'Sachi shrine' that he claims Suguru had made. Despite reassurance that he wasn't that kind of person, he honestly just wanted to be at arm's reach from her.

Donning traditional loose, navy, and purple yukatas with the insignia of the Getou family, the two headed off to meet their friends near the receiving area where a middle-aged woman, in an elegant violet garb came to greet them.

Suguru smiled at the woman and gave her an affectionate hug, "Hello mother,"

She smiled at her son then turned to the boy beside him, "Hello Satoru, it's been a while,"

Without hesitation Satoru had also given Suguru's mom a hug and a huge grin. Unlike his own parents, the Getous were more demonstrative of their feelings, and he was always treated warmly whenever he would visit, "Hi oba-chan! Thanks for inviting us!"

Suguru came from a kind and humble background where they actually treated each member as family. Seeing how close his friend was to his parents and the difference of how he was treated in his own home sometimes made him a little jealous about their dynamic. Even the people who worked in their estate treated Suguru like he was a precious young man unlike how Satoru's own household staff treated him too formally. The very basis of his existence was forged in reference to his power so visits such as these were a welcome occasion.

Soon, the girls emerged from their rooms. Satoru caught a glimpse of his pretty girlfriend in the velvety yukata which erased his melancholy. Her crimson eyes were remarkably emphasized by the dark tone of the garb that made her pinkish lips look even more inviting. Her hair was only half-done, the slight wavy pattern that enlaced the silver streaks danced on one side kept neat by an assortment of clips that Ieiri had fashioned for her.

Ieri's a good friend indeed.

Getou's mom couldn't agree more as she followed the direction of the same-colored eyes that went towards the two girls. It was evident in Suguru's face that Sachiko also had that effect on him. He couldn't blame his friend really. Anyone would look twice.

Suguru's mom took a few steps forward towards the girls and clasped her hands together, "I see we have a new face in our home. Hello, my name is Getou Sara,"

Sachiko couldn't help but stare at the beautiful lady. She had sharp eyes that were the same shade of purple as that of her friend, her skin was pinkish, and her salt and paper hair looked luxurious in her bun. She lowered her head into a bow and greeted the lady of the household,

"Hajimemashite, my name is Miura Sachiko,"

Suguru's mother placed the back of her hand over her mouth and tilted her head, purple eyes adjusting to the mysterious doe-eyed girl then to her pretty friend in the lighter yukata,

"Oh my, much like Ieiri here, you sure do look lovely,"

Ieiri couldn't help but smile at her and ushered Sachiko and her to move forward as Sara had gestured.

Getou Sara placed both hands over Sachiko's shoulder and grinned wider,

"I have to say, my yukata looks so good on you. It suits you like a befitting lady of a household," she winked making Suguru jerk nervously at her side. Her devious remarks came from a place where she was unaware that Sachiko was already spoken for…though admittedly, it was nice that she was being supportive of his love life as any mother would.

Suguru let out an anxious chuckle, "Mother, please…"

Sachiko decided to take the conversation in her own hands and spoke, "This is a very beautiful yukata, I am honored to wear it,"

Taking a hint from her son, she merely nodded cheerfully and continued to compliment the other young lady,

"Same goes to you Ieiri, your lovely eyes match the colors well," she placed one hand over Ieiri's arm and took her to the side and whispered in question if Sachiko was the same person in the painting, they had displayed in one corner of their room. Her lilac eyes floated towards the direction of Suguru's sketch that Ieiri almost snorted out a laugh in confirmation.

Turning their attention back towards the others, Sara began to take her leave and bid them a good stay at their residence giving one last kindhearted look at her son before attending to the residents of their business establishment.

Shouko already had her day planned the moment they got the invitation that as soon as they were given free time, she was dragging her best friend around the estate that it took an hour and a half until the four of them were reunited.

She was already carrying their change of clothes and toiletries when they met up in the hallway. Rushing through her update, she clicked her tongue, "We're going to the hot springs, what will you two do?" she already looked past them, mapping out the best route for them to take to the out-door springs.

Satoru snapped his fingers to catch her attention, then after placed his hands behind his head and gave Sachiko a knowing look, "We'll go a little later, we're gonna laze in our room first or something,"

Shouko yawned and rolled her eyes, "Alright. Just as well," a smirk appeared on her face as she pointed towards each of the boys and grinned, "We can't have you two peeking especially since we want to try the open-air ones first!"

Suguru's brow twitched at her insinuation, "I assure you; we won't do that. Our onsen prides itself with respect for privacy," he pointed out, turning towards his light-haired friend for back-up.

Satoru cocked a brow, "Yeah and don't flatter yourself,"

Shouko hung her arms around their necks and whispered callously, "You two should be nicer to me. I'm the one who's gonna be with Sachi. I get to see everything," her teasing successfully made the boys turn three shades of red that Sachiko instantly figured out the context and excused herself to walk ahead.

"The hell Shouko?!" Gojo dejected, one arm reaching towards Sachiko, only to be restrained by the reversal student's clutch.

Suguru unlooped her arm and sighed heavily, "You can wear swimsuits you know…"

Shouko burst out laughing and placed one hand over her stomach to contain herself from making too much noise. Wiping away her happy tears she returned her attention towards the flustered pair, "I know. Who says anything about not wearing them?"

Suguru was tricked into her statement that his eyes widened and quickly shied away. This however only lured her into more of her suggestive quips, "What are you two thinking huh? Seriously!" she cackled once more, "It's so easy to tease you two," clapping the boys' backs once more, she left to join her friend who was already making her exit.

Satoru turned to his side and narrowed his glistening blue eyes at Suguru and spoke jarringly, "Oi. Just what the hell are you thinking? Don't start getting funny ideas just coz you own this place,"

Suguru crossed his arms and snorted, "I'm not one to think about such things," without lengthening his speech, he started to tread away from Satoru, "Anyway, I'll be taking a nap first,"

"Huh? It's your birthday and you're gonna nap?" He hooked Suguru by his collar and directed him elsewhere, "Let's go to the game room!"

The commotion they had made inside the game room over table tennis caused quite a stir among the guests. The two young sorcerers were quite skilled with the sport were all smiles as they were neck to neck in their scores. It wasn't until the ladies in their circle had challenged the boys and had drained their confidence in it after they have emerged victorious prior to their bath time, this time in the private section.

Shouko dusted her hands and dropped the paddle on the table making the two boys jerk back and evade the triumphant grin of the two girls sharing a high-five.

"Okay," she snapped her fingers and hurriedly gathered their things for the private spring, lacing her hand on Sachiko's wrist, the crimson eyed one snuck a quick glimpse at Satoru before she disappeared but was luckily halted as Suguru's mom had already summoned them for dinner.

To his luck, or rather mother's own devising, Suguru found himself alone with Sachiko, sipping hot tea under the pale glow of the full moon. He had slid open the tall windows, just slightly to let in a cold draft just to get some fresh air.

He had been nervous for a few weeks now, planning on how the night would go. If he went according to his original plan, his birthday would have presented differently. Had it not been his recent decision to scrap the plan after accepting a revelation that took place after their tiring mission with the Scrybe, he would have found himself holding Sachiko right now. Keeping her warm and toasty in his loving hold.

Still, despite his attempts to ignore his feelings, he found it difficult to just let himself stand aside. He had silently proclaimed his love for her and have utilize half of his time looking for means to save her from an early demise. To speak of his effort overtaking Satoru's own wouldn't be appropriate but to say that it was anything less, would be insulting.

Still, he allowed himself, especially on that day to just relish in the comfort of her company, even if it were just two friends making small talk.

"You have a lovely home Suguru, your mother more-so," Sachiko was always fascinated about families, and she had even asked him before about his own. He had always intended to keep his promise of having her meet his parents in hopes that the introduction would be of a more personal matter rather than a casual one. Still, he was grateful that she thought fondly of his mother and his home.

"I'm glad you like it here. My mother seems to have taken a liking to you," he kept his reply short. Guarding the information that he had confided in his mother about his feelings locked in his head to dissuade any discomfort that may follow.

Her lips quivered upward, and voice increased a pitch higher to tease, "I wonder though, what else could Suguru Getou ask for, for his birthday when he already has so much?"

You. That's all I want.

It took a lot of effort and restraint to swallow the truth that was obvious in everyone else's eyes but remained clouded (or rather avoidant) in hers that he just blurted out some random desire.

"Hm…tough question," his voice trailed off making Sachiko a little regretful of her question. Without waiting for him to continue with his response, she followed through,

"Suguru, you better not give me some intangible or metaphorical answer," she pressed her shoulder against his slightly and laughed, "What can I give you as a gift? An actual object if you will?"

His lilac eyes landed softly on her pristine face, taking a few seconds to study the radiance in her expectant eyes, allowing a trickle of light to shine on her lips before forcing himself to look forward.

Taking a deep breath, he spoke, "I'm not exactly a materialistic kinda guy-but," he scratched the side of his face and looked upwards before shifting his position to face her, "Well, I dunno Sachi, maybe you could give me something on the 14th?" he shrugged, half-nervous about what she would say about his request.

It was pretty tactical. A custom that would require or societal norms would highly encourage females to gift chocolates to males they fancy including their friends. No one would even question it and say that it was special treatment since he was certain Satoru would definitely receive something from her.

Sachiko's brows shot upwards, "You mean Valentine's Day?"

He shrugged once more.

She let out a small giggle, "Are you sure you don't want anything else?"

He shook his head.

"Alright, don't worry. That's done, though I won't be surprised if my gift gets overtaken by hundreds sitting on your desk,"

He gave an assertive smirk, "They won't be as special as yours, I'm sure,"

"Okay then, expect something on the 14th," she hummed, "Nothing I can do for you today? You still have a birthday wish that only lasts until Midnight,"

My wish can't come true even if I willed it until 12.

"No, it's okay, I'm good. Just-stay with me a while until the others get back…"

Sachiko had never seen Suguru look so calm and content as she did now. His smile was no longer crooked as he faced her and yet there was something about the way he just observed her and sat beside her that made Sachiko feel that he was hiding something. She blinked twice before breaking from his stare and lifted her eyes to towards the bright blue moon.

Suguru didn't follow her line of sight and continued to ogle. It didn't matter if she minded how he zeroed in on her features. For a few more moments, it would just be the two of them breathing in the same space. It was a little too much-it was wasted opportunity. He wanted so eagerly to hold her and press his lips on her cheek and then maybe even her lips but-his loyalty and honor was stronger than his selfish desires that he just sat in silent adoration.

Stay with me. Breathe beside me. Just breathe. That's all I want.

Suguru had stayed behind the day after their festivities. He hadn't been home in so long that his mother requested he stayed until he saw his father. Suguru's father, Osamu, had just returned home from a mission but came back just in time to see his friends off for breakfast.

When they had left, Suguru spent the rest of the morning in their patio, listening to his father's stories he spoke enthusiastically about in between puffs. His mother had handed his old man an ashtray which he set beside him and continued on to speak about a different topic.

Pressing the butt of the tobacco on the marble dish, Suguru's father raked back his dark-brown hair and gestured for him to sit beside him.

He took another hit of his tobacco and jerked his head forward, "She seems like a nice girl son, the Kitsune,"

Suguru nodded slightly, "She is,"

"I have to admit, she isn't exactly what I expected," another puff left his lips.

"What do you mean?"

His father pursed his lips and crossed his legs before speaking, "I just meant that she's more tame than rumored…though you have to understand news that circulates among us older windows aren't exactly all that accurate,"

"I assure you, Sachiko doesn't impose any harm whatsoever," he was a little irked at his insinuation. He had known Sachiko for half an hour and yet here he was once more siding with the higher-ups as he usually did.

He shrugged, "Yes, that much I can affirm, and I am little relieved that despite our clan history, she still communes with us,"

Suguru clenched his fist now. Of all people who would bring up their family history of fox-hunting, he didn't think his father, the grandson of the proponent who fixed their standing with the Miuras, to talk about such things, "She knows that we are not our ancestors. She is not the kind of person who would hold such grudges,"

Osamu looked at his son with much concern now. He didn't want to taint his friendship with the girl but also couldn't leave him to be so unguarded. The words that left his mouth already soured his son's mood that he had to wait until he calmed down.

Suguru frowned, "Was there something else?"

Suguru's father placed one hand on his son's shoulder, making his son's lilac eyes search through his own, "Son, I know how much you care about this girl but, I am concerned that your involvement with her could pose more trouble than you know…"

He knitted his brows, "What makes you say that? Did the higher-ups say anything?"

Suguru's father gave out a deep sigh, "Call it a father's intuition, if you will…I just don't want you to get hurt,"

Suguru narrowed his eyes at him and spoke through gritted teeth, "Are you saying that as my father? Or as a Getou?"

"Both,"

Suguru stood now, irritation filling up the more their conversation went on, "If you want what's best for me father, then I hope you will respect my freedom in such matters. I am certain that she will not cause harm to our family," he turned his back now making his father rise but release his hold on his shoulder.

"I sincerely hope so son,"

His mother came in between them hurriedly, allowing Suguru to clear from the room. Turning to her husband, she took his arm and sat him down, "I think he'll be fine. Besides, she cares a lot about Suguru,"

His father pinched his temple and exhaled, "Does she really?"

Sara nodded.

Still within earshot, Suguru's hand lingered on the handle of the sliding door. Before he placed one foot out, he looked over his shoulder at his father, his stare warning him that he would not regret the words he was about to release, "I care about her a lot too. I hope you can consider that father," and then he left.

The rest of his stay at home went rather slowly. Except for formalities such as meals and scholastic updates, his parents never brought up the Kitsune subject after that morning, still there was a breathable tension whenever he was alone with his father. It was remarkably different when he and Gojo were introduced to be friends. The support he had to allow such a bond to form made him think that his father only pushed for their friendship for their own growth in status. Perhaps it was something he thought would help his son's future either way though, it seemed as though conditions behind it have changed.

At the back of his mind, Suguru realized that perhaps it takes another real sorcerer to understand another and his parents, as windows, had limited understanding of what they struggle with, still, he was just grateful that they were decent towards his friends.

His lamentations were brought to a halt after he received a message from his respected senior and friend.

"What could Yahiko-senpai want?"

He read the cryptic message and ended up accepting the invitation to an event he had no idea about. Whether or not his invitation would have a connection as to his standing as Hiko's prospect for his cousin, any excuse to have some time off at home and at school, he'd accept.

"I wonder if Satoru also got an invitation to Hatsu Uma…"

December 1st

Satoru had spent the last five minutes flipping his phone close and open an hour after he received a request from his own clan to assist on something. He grabbed another piece of candy and popped it inside of his mouth, mindlessly making crunching noises as the hard gems melted on his palate that he didn't even realize how sweet it was until he swallowed it.

Normally such personal matters didn't require him to think twice about travelling to one of their ancestral homes. It was normal for them to ask the would-be clan head to help with their affairs. It's been the same cycle for years since he learned how to walk and he'd always either be dragged to his relatives or just magically find himself transported there.

This time though the request was more specific, and it made him a little nervous. It wasn't that he didn't want to introduce her to his family but inviting her in the middle of their break to ask for her assistance wasn't exactly his plan of a big reveal. Besides, none of his parents would be there. Just some stingy, very stuck-up relatives who cared for Suguwara Michizane's shrine.

He ruffled his pale hair and groaned, dialing the first number of his recent and most frequent calls, leg shaking as he waited for the other person on the line to answer.

"Satoru?" her tone was quite melodious whenever she said his name that allowed him to relax a little on the edge of his bed.

"Hi, Chi-chan, are you busy?"

She laughed, "Not at all, what's on your mind?"

"Well…I was wondering if I can ask you a favor?"

"Of course, what is it?"

Sachiko couldn't see him, but he was really on edge, picking on the stray hair that landed on the side of his face and looked upwards, "You see, my aunt is asking a favor from you. Are you busy on the 7th?"

"Hm…no, I'll still be at school then, I'll be going home on the 10th. What kind of favor?"

She felt a little nervous upon his mention of a relative, that she couldn't help but fiddle with her dark locks. But in the few months that they have been together, she always reminded herself that she'd have to meet his family eventually.

"Well, they spotted an Inari in one of our ancestral shrines, they can't seem to contain it and they know about you, so-" he exhaled sharply, "Shit, sorry Chi, I hate to ask this while we're on break,"

Sachi hurriedly replied, the apprehension behind the voice of the boy was very evident with each intonation that she stood from where she sat, "No, no! Please, I'll be happy to help. It's you who's asking. Don't worry about it. Besides, the dolls are getting bored of me here," her soft giggle made Gojo grin widely that he held his phone closer to his mouth.

"Great, thanks Chi!" He bit his lip and let out a relieved sigh, "Hey, I'm pretty psyched that now, I have a good excuse to see you," he cleared his throat and raked back his hair as he prepared to release his next set of words, "I miss you…."

There was a short pause from Sachiko's side, but it wasn't because she was startled by his statement but because she had been waiting to hear it ever since he called. She was glad that Satoru couldn't see the red band that appeared across her cheeks and the eager expression that she hid with her hands especially since there were a few doting stuffed animals that surrounded her.

Her lips parted slightly before decreasing the volume of her voice over the phone, "I miss you too weird-o,"

Satoru cackled, "I know," he said proudly, imagining his girl's expression in detail, making him yearn for the day that he'd fetch her to come fast.

"By the way, where are we going?"

December 7th

Dazaifu Tenman-gu

Fukuoka

The forecast was accurate in depicting favorable weather despite the cold. Snow didn't fall heavily, and the winter chill posed a little bit of a challenge enroute to yet another famous attraction in Fukuoka.

Dazaifu was uncharacteristically isolated just for their visit.

Around them, were numerous frost-covered plum trees.

Establishments where each stand had the sigil of a plum flower displayed near the entrances remained open for the locals. People present were huddled in winter clothing while those who worked inside the Tengman-gu wore identical robes embroidered with the Gojo family crest, including an intricately weaved eye of buddha pattern on the back of their robes. What was notable was that the irises were similar to the blue shade of Satoru's eyes.

The old lady who had promptly greeted her young masterhad taken it upon herself to give Sachiko a brief history of the Shrine and its proponent. But before she began, she gave her instructions on how to go about passing through the three shrine bridges they would need to cross to get to the main shrine.

She told Sachiko that the bridges represented the three periods of time: past, present, and future.

With each step, she must remember to never look behind as she crosses the first bridge, then to walk without stopping on the second and to never stumble on the last.

An apt and poetic way to place symbolism to Michizane's final dwelling place.

Sachiko didn't expect to be brought to his relatives so soon especially to sacred grounds of his Clan. Upon his mention of the location, her knowledge of relevant Heian history was tested.

The old lady had told the tale of how one scholar quickly worked his way up in court not just for his writing prowess but for his tenacity for politics. Because of his status, he had earned a few rivals particularly from the mighty Fujiwara clan who were known to be big proponents in the imperial court. Their jealousy earned him disfavor from the emperor so much so that he was exiled in Dazaifu where he lived out his days until he was in his late fifties.

Despite his good standing during his years of servitude, his forced seat evacuation had resulted to a poorly attended procession on the day of his burial. His remains were said to be carried by a strong ox who, along the way refused to budge and walk further to carry Michizane to the grounds chosen for him by his relatives. As such, they took it as a sign that Michizane had instructed the Ox to point to the location where he wished to be laid to rest.

And so, the Teman-gu Shrine was erected.

Sachiko had counted how many oxen they had passed and despite being told that there were at least twelve, she had only accounted for six, the last one being the largest and most important one in the shrine. She wondered if they represented something but in hindsight perhaps it was just way to represent the trail that the ox had taken.

The presence on an elemental spirit was upon them and yet, all Sachiko could focus on were the keepers of the shrine. His blood relatives that watched her every single move, calculating and deciphering each thick cloud that formed whenever she would breathe. They were quite intimidating to say the least but how could they not be?

They were learned and esteemed members of the boy with the Six-Eyes. Those of whom they have passed couldn't have been further from how Satoru had presented himself even on serious occasions.

They were demurer, a tad bit cold and very non-chatty and it made her wonder if his parents were the same jolly person beside her or were more alike to the clan members in their midst. She initially thought that it was perhaps she was a stranger-no, she wasn't a stranger. She was anything but that. Of course, she read it in their pursed lips and stark eyes, they knew who she was.

The Kitsune.

Years before they were recognized as an official clan, traditionalists kept the belief that Kitsunes only offered bad luck to the people they surrounded. They were living omens, creatures of deceit and peril. Abominations if you will.

Ironically, it was with the help of Gojo Satoru's ascendants that the Kitsune-borne were placed in better light. Having assisted in Michizane's tribulations during the drought and famine during his time as governor, he only wrote fondly of her kind.

Still, there were those who refused to accept the good that Kitsunes had done and focused on the treachery of those who came before her. Current leaders and surveyors did nothing to ease the tension among clans in fact they only added to the red paint splashed over their reputation.

The reputation she was solely responsible for.

Despite developing a more intimate relationship with Satoru, not once did he mention anything about his clan. His answers were sometimes quite vague when it came to his family though she did remember him say that he was close with his parents. It kind of showed in his demeanor that warmth was still present despite the overwhelming responsibilities he had to bear.

I mean, he's a little selfish and arrogant at times but he's still a good person. I'm pretty sure his home is a lot more welcoming than this place…

At her periphery Sachiko noted that he was somber even when he smiled. The tone of his voice wasn't any different from usual, but his eyes were.

Why does he look, a little…sad?

They crossed another frozen koi pond where nothing stayed in between them except this calm and resounding silence that was only partly disturbed by the movement of their feet.

The staff had left them at the temizuya where they simultaneously cleansed their hands and mouths as part of the purification right before they entered the Honden (Main Shrine).

Satoru and Sachiko gave two deep bows and clapped their hands twice before silently offering a prayer.

When Satoru was a child, he would spend hours in fervent reverence to the gods and his almighty ancestor praying that he would be the person that his family aspired for him to be while also begging them to give him a sense of normalcy and rest from traditions and training.

I didn't want to be limitless. I wanted to be normal…free.

Over the years, he had learned that the gods and even Michizane only listened to half of his pleas. Omitting the most important part of his novena, the clan members joined them in prayer, their collective voices turning him into the man he was now.

Their personal Messiah.

Not their relative.

Not a person.

An entity.

I wanted so desperately to use my technique-to stop and slow everything down.

Satoru didn't close his eyes for more than ten seconds, his clasped hands finding itself dangling freely on his side but his companion, was still in deep contemplation. She was taking the rather hostile if not unbecoming treatment of his relatives better than he was. He was sure she had questions about his family but right now as he watched her, he wondered what she would ever want to ask from the Tenjin.

What kind of enlightenment was she seeking?

Oh.

A grim realization had entered his mind and but it didn't match the calm expression she had even with her eyes closed. Could she have asked for wisdom and acceptance of her impediment? Or was she asking for a solution? Either way, it dawned on him that in the many years he had stopped asking Michizane for anything, that he actually did have something to pray for….her.

Silently, he spoke to the local deity and asked that whatever she had wanted, be answered in his stead.

When she opened her eyes, he finally allowed himself to etch the familiar grin that made her more at ease and finally, he broke the silence,

"Ready to go 'Chi?"

Satoru had brought her in front of the bronze ox that marked Michizane's gravestone, already, she could sense the shikigami that disturbed the ox was nearby. The shift of the shape of her pupils earned her a few startled stares from the shrine maidens that were on standby.

Satoru's aunt and uncle soon made their presence known and had formally introduced themselves and explained their predicament.

The stray Inari was one of the guardians awakened from the Tenkai Daimyoji Inari Shrine located in the same Tenmangu. After a horrible thunderstorm destroyed one of the statues guarding the temple, the Inari had run off and caused quite a stir with Michizane's ox guardians.

After their short chat, the couple had given Satoru a very deep and prolonged bow as if he was their prince, calling him Gojo-san, instead of his first name. She didn't mind that they barely looked at her in the eyes, but it was the way they treated Satoru that made her realize that family wasn't a term they used liberally among themselves.

The Inari was easy enough to tame. It quickly recognized Sachiko as the Kitsune and willingly went with her to return to its original dwelling in the Daimyoji. The Inari was a young one, and it was probably just scared that it got separated from its family. To show its gratitude, the Inari even bowed in front of the Kitsune and the lord of the clan. It seemed to know very well who Satoru was.

He was a little hard to miss. The boy with the sky for eyes even if they were hidden behind thick and blacked-out spectacles, still donned the same thick amount of cursed energy that had its unique reading that branded him as the one.

The Inari hurriedly left to reunite with the rest of the guardians and it made Sachiko a little happy that at least a part of her family had a connection with his.

Satoru gave the girl beside him an affectionate caress making her cold cheek flush at the sudden warmth from his fingers that pricked her icy skin. Withdrawing his hand to keep stray eyes watching over them at bay, he jerked his head sidewards and offered his arm for her to clasp,

"Thanks Chi, just one more stop before we go, okay?"

He had brought her to the section where a very old yet very majestic plum tree was located to the right of the Honden. Its body and branches were already half-covered in frost and snow, still under the afternoon light, it looked very beautiful. There were very few plum blossoms that crystallized yet sat safely on the sturdy hands of the tree that Sachiko couldn't help but admire the sight of nature she was shown.

On its trunk something else had caught her attention. There were sigils that floated around the veil of the tree, the characters creating a beautiful collection of words that served as some sort of incantation that created its own domain.

Satoru noticed the slight weaving of her brows and noted how her eyes moved as if she was reading a text.

He snickered, "You can see them too right? The poem?"

Sachiko nodded. Above them were floating words that were flashing on repeat. She took a deep breath and read it out loud,

東風吹かばにほひをこせよ梅花主なしとて春を忘るな

Should the east winds blow,
Carry me the fragrance
Of plum blossom;
And though your lord is gone,
Never forget the springtime

-菅原道真, Sugawara Michizane

"Do you know the story behind the tree?" Satoru went to her side, "It is said that after his exile, Sugawara's words reached the plum blossoms and made them yearn for its master so much that it flew all the way from Kyoto to reunite with him and uprooted itself here in Dazaifu," he pointed towards the biggest tree in the shrine,

"Which is why they called it the Tobiume, the flying plum tree, though, some legends say that it was actually a spirit, perhaps even a person that transcended into the form of this tree just so he or she could reunite with their beloved master,"

Sachiko's eyes continued to linger on the words that floated above the majestic tree as Satoru continued his tale. She had heard some stories about the poet but a lot of the history involving his work as a shaman weren't made available to the public.

The story of the tobiume ignited a fascination for Heian era love stories. Admittedly, the story made her a little hopeful that perhaps soulmates do exist.

When she was fourteen, she stayed for hours on end reading about legends and fables that spoke about romanticism and occurrences of unions amidst extreme transgressions. Among those where the story Satoru had just narrated.

Standing in front the legendary tree made her a little emotional.

Seeing with her own eyes how it stood strong, strengthened her belief in a thing called fate.

And if the Seer was right about hers, hits may have been a very positive sign that it may, indeed, come true.

"Michizane was someone who rose through the ranks out of his own merit. If it weren't for him, our clan may have been erased from history. Of course, the part about the vengeful spirit thing is kinda messed up. I don't believe he was bestowed powers just to spite the Kyoto faction.

For me, it was already the fates giving him some sort of poetic vengeance after his death. He was a good man who was brought down by the treachery of delinquent narcissists, so it only serves him right that he was bestowed as Tenjin.

Too bad his name was cleared posthumously. Still, I must admire him for what he's done for our bloodline, it's just sad that he ended up in isolation,"

She wondered then if there was a reason why Satoru looked at the tree like it wasn't just an object. But it was there in his eyes that perhaps he had spent many days under it, caring for it like a friend who had listened to his stories when he was still a boy. He even spoke of his ancestor like he was a good companion, and it became very evident that this place, became a sort of sanctuary for him.

"It only really blooms during the 25th day of spring but ever since Michizane's death, the flowers didn't flourish as much as the other plum blossoms in this Shrine. The camphor trees though stood strong," he placed one arm around her shoulder to keep her steady and warm as a cold breeze had passed through making her hold her hair in place as Satoru proceeded to hold her into a slight embrace.

He didn't care much about the languid stares they were receiving the more that he displayed affectations towards Sachiko. He knew that a number of them weren't too keen about her family but finally, his status as future clan head, he could live with if it meant protecting her.

She didn't say anything, but he knew she was getting uncomfortable, still he was thankful that they got through their ordeal without any stresses.

Sachiko lifted her chin and smiled, "Thank you for bringing me here today. It's nice learning about your family history, I appreciate it a lot,"

He laughed.

Of course, leave it to Sachiko to be optimistic about everything.

"Thanks for coming with me Chi, I needed you today," he said those last words clearly making her understand that the convenience of her company was wanted outside the confines of duty.

He needed her there because, he didn't want to feel alone.

"Wait, before we go, perhaps, there's something I could do for Sugawara-san,"

"Hm? What do you mean?"

"I'm not a fan of ill-fated stories so, maybe, even if just for today, his spring will come earlier,"

Sachiko stood in front of the Tobiume and summoned her fox fire in between her palms except this time the flame wasn't the bright red orange that she usually wielded, this time it was the color close to snow that when she released it and covered the whole tree, it melted the ice that cloaked its mighty structure and revealed the plum blossoms slowly going into a full bloom.

Should the east winds blow,
Carry me the fragrance
Of plum blossom;
And though your lord is gone,
Never forget the springtime

He recited the poem once more inside his head. He knew Sachiko saw hope within those sigils but to him, it was the kind that he didn't desire.

I don't want spring to come if you're not there.

I'd rather stay frozen in winter, with you.

They lingered a little longer around Dazaifu after Satoru's aunt had told them that the tourist sites would be opened in an hour. Satoru was a little surprised that after his aunt had given a cold send-off and a small offering to Sachiko, she had agreed to venture around the vicinity.

He was fine with it as long they would stay away from the establishments that either had his face or their family sigil. He just wanted to enjoy the rest of the day with Sachiko as they would usually do when they went out. Still, the wonder that was plastered on Sachiko's face was still present as they walked past the sacred grounds that he ushered her to sit under one of the plum trees near the entrance where people would often take photos.

Difficult as it was, he couldn't just leave without telling her the truth about his family-at least some of it.

"Chi? I'm sorry about-them…they're not used to visitors who are-" his apologetic tone was met with a quick shake of her head.

"No need to apologize, I know Satoru," she gave him a nod, "I know…"

"They're not all like that, most of them are-tolerable," he scratched the side of his face,

"Anyway, pretty sure they know who you are to me now so, they better show courtesy the next time we visit," the word next time made Sachiko's lips curve upwards. He was trying to brag and exalt his authority to pass off the indecent behavior his relatives had exhibited towards her at least, by the way she was receiving his quips, he knew she wasn't offended.

He looked towards the gloomy sky and took a deep breath, the puff creating small cloud as he leaned back and watched the frozen branches struggle to move with the breeze.

"My family, you asked me before if I was close to them…well, I guess, you know the real answer now,"

She gave him a thoughtful look, carefully assessing his taut yet smiling face and the way he stiffly retained his posture beside her. Knowing that he was about to share something personal, she kept her mouth shut and tucked in her hair behind her ears and listened in.

"They're not the warmest of people. But my folks," he snorted, "I kind of standby what I said. I'm close to them…" his light eyes and pale lashes turned downcast, evasive of the red ones that were longing for contact, "I'm as close as I could ever be to them…"

Sachiko's gloved hand went to soothe the side of his arm making Satoru smirk but still focus elsewhere.

"Growing up, I thought that parents were really just there to guide me and nurture me and educate me with the system,"

"The clan matters, my technique, my training-they made it their sole duty to make sure I was getting the best. I had everything I wanted. I was made extremely comfortable,"

"But even as a kid, I remember that play time was actually filled with adults. The kids around would only join me if they were told to. No questions asked. Even if some of them were too scared to go near me,"

"My books weren't like other children's. My daily routine consisted of rituals, study and even physical training,"

He paused briefly to clear the fog that formed in his dark shades and propped them back in between his ears,

"It wasn't much different at home. My parents had me in a loop of activities I needed to do that even bonding with them had a schedule," he looked sideways, "Don't get me wrong, they were very kind and caring parents. They fed me, nursed me, and tucked me in bed. Life was made easy for me but-" he felt his throat dry up from talking that he had to pause to contain his sentiments that were clearly affecting Sachiko as well.

He wet his lips and ran his fingers in his hair, "I dunno, it always felt like something was missing…ironically, I wasn't neglected at all. It was the exact opposite. All eyes were on me. Funny right?" he cackled as he pointed towards himself, the snarky expression forced upon his face,

"Six-eyes here had hundreds on him everywhere he went. Everything I did had to be perfect. Everything I learned and presented was scrutinized. It was very exhausting, but they reminded me that everything I would do and will do had a greater purpose. Since the day I was born, they told me that there was a shift that occurred and I was responsible in maintaining that positive shift,"

He frowned now but only temporarily until his lips rested in a straight line, "Ever since I was five years old, my mother and father would recite to me nightly the noble truth of suffering and why suffering exists and how by liberation and cessation of suffering can only be achieved by severing its root causes. And that only by becoming truly selfless beings made to serve the one true purpose of living a virtuous life can only be achieved by following specific steps-"

"To live a life of right understanding, right thought, speech, action, livelihood, effort, mindfulness and concentration," Sachiko had recited the doctrine committed to memory.

The same ones she was taught when we she first entered the Kitsune's clan.

The eight fold path to achieving Nirvana.

Satoru nodded and exhaled, a little astonished at how they were brought up to internalize the same principles. Still, all he could do was press on,

"Exactly. Those words and everything I was made to follow, really made me believe that they were right. It was an arduous journey yet it was quite fulfilling I must admit. Now that I'm older, I actually understand. There was wisdom there. I just wished that beyond the title and my God-given talent," he looked at his pale, trembling hands now,

"With those many pairs of eyes that floated in the river of faceless yet numerous shadows of energy I've seen, someone actually looked beyond and remembered that I wasn't just-"

A weapon.

A tool.

A god who walked the earth.

Those were the exact words that the both of them didn't voice out. Unwilling to acknowledge the hard truth of how they were viewed as future clan leaders.

Satoru continued, "I just wanted to really be seen and treated like a person. I hated being called a master. I just wanted them to say my name as it is, not because I demanded attention and respect. You know?"

I do. All my life I've been treated as I pariah, my existence was never acknowledged beyond my powers. Even if we were seen differently, we both basically fell into the same abyss.

Sachiko sat closer to him now so that their fingers could interlace better, their hands rested on Satoru's lap. Satoru understood from her actions that his thoughts resonated with hers that she didn't have to say anything to provide him a little bit of comfort. Just being made aware of the fact that someone really, truly understood what he was going through gave him all the solace he needed. Still, despite his muddy childhood, he was still grateful to have a family that would remain loyal to him for so long as he lived.

Sachiko's hold provided him a little more courage to speak of what was in his mind. Despite her silence, there was one thing that he knew she wondered about. He cleared his throat before directing her head to rest on his shoulders before speaking and with the next breath, he continued,

"My mother and father had an arranged marriage. But, they were good people,"

Were. Sachiko's thoughts stilled at that word that she had to force herself to concentrate.

"They were very cordial I guess, but I dunno, I kinda felt like there was something lacking in between them," he felt her flinch making him speak shakily, "Don't get me wrong, they raised me properly. They were good people," he emphasized once more,

"But not the warmest in a sense. But like I said, their priorities were different from other parents for their kids…but," he let out an exasperated sigh, "Other than clan activities, my house was pretty boring,"

Sachiko realized how callous she sounded when she asked about his relationship with his parents when they were freshmen. She had all along just assumed their good standing because of the way he carried himself and how he skillfully spoke only good things about them. It didn't even dawn on her that perhaps he was omitting very important details.

Sachiko frowned and looked at him remorsefully.

Satoru shrugged, "Yeah, well, people ask me while I smile a lot. I don't blame you. I smile 'cause it's the easiest thing to do and its free," a hand went to his chest and slowly slid to the side of his neck, eyes straying away from the Sachiko, "I want my inner feelings to match my face and that helps, makes me believe it,"

He straightened, making Sachiko shift in the way she stayed beside him,

"But don't worry 'Chi, they did one thing very right-they sent me to the institute and well, I'm better than ever,"

Sachiko's lips curled downward, and her grasp tightened over his gloved fingers from the guilt she felt from forcing him to lie just to make it easier for her, "I'm really sorry Satoru, I-I didn't know…I just assumed-"

He patted her hair and turned his head sidewards, still, Sachiko had to reassure him that everything he would vent would be kept safe.

Sachiko raised her head now and placed one hand on his cheek making his eyes widen at her sudden gesture, she steadied her voice and allowed the bright red of her eyes to reflect in the ocean in his,

"Satoru, you should know that you can talk to me about anything. I'm not here to judge you. I'm here to provide you support and comfort. You don't have to hide anything from me, you can always depend on me, okay? If you don't want to talk about it, it's fine too. If you want me to just be there and stay with you, I will. You don't have to feel alone, anymore…"

Her words and deep understanding of his resolve made his chest rattle. It was crippling and also heartening to know that she was offering the kind of refuge he was looking for in the eyes that bore the same hue as his, in the people whose same blood coursed through his face.

Satoru raised the hand that held unto him and kissed it before pressing his lips on the crown of her hair.

Finally, after a long while, he felt like he was home.

Satoru smiled with his teeth and rested his temple on hers, "I know, that's why I pursued you. I trust you. Please remember that," he lifted his head and let out a small chuckle, "I knew you'd understand but I also knew you wouldn't pester me about fixing stuff with my clan relationships,"

Sachiko snarled, "I think we know better than to waste time on that,"

"Right," he said. He gestured for them to stand now but his eyes didn't lift from hers. Brushing away some of the snow that landed on her shoulders, he looped one hand behind her nape and allowed the other to cup the side of her face,

"I don't want that, you know. What happened to my parents? I want something real,"

What we have is real… Sachiko thought.

Sachiko overlapped her hand on the one that rested on her cheek and did her best to contain the flush that now spread to her ears but before she could say anything, Satoru had already opened his mouth,

"I'm glad that we met…every day, I am grateful that you came into my life,"

Sachiko's eyes widened along with the gape on her mouth that Satoru couldn't help but pinch her cheek to keep her from having a panic attack.

He spoke through his laughter, "Don't worry I'm not proposing yet-" he felt the heat from the blood that was pumped out of his heart spread all throughout his body upon realizing how absurdly bold he sounded that he had to turn away.

His free hand found the space below his hairline, but he stuttered through his next statement, "B-but it's just, a, uh, thought,"

He sighed, "I just never knew feeling this way could actually be good for me," he leaned forward, "It's nice…"

I want to choose to. And I think, I have.

Sachiko couldn't help but allow her smile to grow. Even though she kept a collected façade, her heart rate was raising, and she was just so happy and touched by what he had said.

She ruffled his hair, "You've changed. More so than me, I think,"

"Yeah? How can you say so?"

She hummed as she took a few steps forward, "I can just…tell,"

Satoru quickly caught up to her and quickly wrapped his arms around her body forcing her stop and rest her head against his chest,

"Anyway, enough about me, we can talk about my boring family next time. For now, since it's still early," he snuggled his head on the side of her neck so that he could whisper, "Wanna go around and have a date in the city?"

Sachiko nodded, "Sounds good,"

Satoru's arms tightened around hers and stayed there for a few seconds that as she looked up, Satoru's previously damp eyes were replaced by a healthier sparkle that exuded the kind of bliss he never thought he'd find until that day,

"Thanks for this Chi. I'm really glad I have you. Thanks for listening and thanks for just treating me as me," he released her now only to have her turn and face him as he went into another hug. Keeping her head close to his vibrating chest. It took him a few seconds to muster up whatever was left of his courage to provide her with another revelation. He gulped.

"This is the best birthday ever,"

He felt his girlfriend tense as soon as he had finished his statement. Her chin left his chest and he felt her slowly inch her attention towards his face. It wasn't that he intended to keep it a secret, but circumstances made it too awkward for him to mention it.

Sachiko's expression was a combination of surprise and irritation. She made a space between them and weaved her brows together as she stammered,

"W-wait, it's your birthday?" her voice rose followed by a slight jab to his chest that made him budge a little, "Why didn't you tell me?"

Satoru feigned a smile and scratched the side of his face, avoiding Sachiko's fiery eye contact as he responded, "Oh, I never did, right? Well, yeah, it's my birthday,"

Sachiko's heart sunk not because she didn't even bother to ask before when his birthday was but because knowing that it was a special day for him-heck, to all of his kin that not a single person from his clan, including his first-degree aunt even greeted him. To her, unless Satoru had given them specific instructions to keep mum about it, she found it inexcusable.

Untangling herself from his grasp, Sachiko had gone on to open her satchel to take out the treat, an umegae mochi wrapped in very intricate paper. She quickly unfolded the covering to reveal the white treat with a purple sigil stamped on it and placed the treat in between her palms.

Before he could say anything, Sachiko had summoned a small pyre that floated over the rice cake and began singing in her deep yet very pleasant voice,

Ureshii na kyou wa.

Tanoshii na kyou wa.

Tanjoubi omedetou.

Outa wo utaimashou.

She lifted her palms and kept the fire burning lightly as she greeted him, "Happy birthday Satoru, make a wish!"

Gojo Satoru looked passed the yellow-orange flare from her fox fire and barely even noticed the desert that she held. All he could see clearly was Sachiko's loving face. T

hat face with the paralyzing smile and daunting eyes that truly saw him for who he really was and what he wanted to be.

Repositioning his neck to blow on the fire, he took the dessert in one hand and cupped her chin with the other so that they were eye to eye, "I have you, I don't want to wish for anything else,"

Sachiko squinted her eyes at him and wrinkled her nose, "Liar,"

He laughed loudly. The kind that he thought he had forgotten ever since they stepped foot inside the Honden. He was lucky that he had her to bring him back,

"If I tell you, my wish in won't come true," he teased.

If Michizane hell, any god can hear me, all I want is for things like this to never change.

Give her to me…give her time and I will be whoever you want me to be and do whatever you want me to do.

Not wanting to waste her effort, Satoru gobbled up the rice cake and dusted his palms before holding out his hand, "Hora, let's go,"

He made another wish as they exited the sacred grounds,

Please don't make her let go of my hand.

For so long as I breathe, let me hold her hand.

Dazaifu on regular days had a lot to offer. Besides the abundant natural display of nature, beautiful, twinkling Christmas lights and colorful banners were lit around the area that it felt like the stars had hung low that night.

It was an opportune coincidence that they found themselves spending the holiday season in such a beautiful place.

People were beginning to crowd the business district that Satoru opted to take her to a quieter area where they could watch the lighting ceremony.

It was a secret spot just above the main streets where they could sit on the bench and just rest their legs. Sachiko found herself snuggled beside him as they witnessed the dancing of the string of lights and colorful lanterns below and was so fascinated at how much fun they had passing the time until the sun went down that she didn't want the day to end.

When she first received Satoru's request, she was extremely hesitant. Of all days he had picked it had to be that day, still, it was better than any other holiday she had spent in the past few years, and she had no regrets about her decision to come.

She tugged on his sweater to draw his attention with which she was awarded with a curious smile.

She took in the night breeze and returned focus on his doting stare, "Satoru, I'm glad today's your birthday," his mouth quivered upwards as she shrugged,

"Honestly, I haven't celebrated this day in a long time since…" her voice trailed off, making Satoru shift his position so he can study her face better but before he could analyze, Sachiko continued, "-I always have a memorial on the 8th."

Satoru winced, "Wait, what do you mean by that?"

She covered her mouth with one hand and looked away, the strength in her voice faded with the next breath she took, "It's also my birthday…"

Satoru jumped off his seat then slumped back to her side, too startled to initially formulate something comprehensible, "CHI! What? Why didn't you -" he was quick to recognize sorrow in her eyes. Her mouth had dropped to her chin that he already knew her explanation wouldn't be a pleasant one.

Sachiko placed both of her hands in front of her to a stretch and allowed them to fall on her lap as she continued. Turning her attention to the starry sky, she went on,

"Well, my birth resulted to the demise of my parents so I kind of feel guilty about that. My family, doesn't really make a big fuss over my birthday ever since I asked them to just treat it as an ordinary day…even before my time with my grandfather, it wasn't a particularly happy occasion for my fosters…"

She clasped her hands together and forced a smile, "But now, at least, I can celebrate something else," she shifted her direction towards Satoru now and beamed,

"Something better,"

Satoru rested his back on the bench and massaged his temple, "Sachiko, seriously, you make my heart stir all the time, but-" he patted his thighs then rubbed his hands together before sliding forward to stress a point,

"If you won't celebrate it then I will," seeing as she was still evading his stare, Satoru knelt in front of her and balanced her chin in one hand,

"When you were born, so was I," he took both of her hands and covered it with his, drawing her attention solely to his face so she could see how sincere and adamant he was to bring his feelings across,

"I think that's pretty awesome, to be born as the same day as the person you love. I'm pretty darn lucky," he kissed her hand now and assisted her to stand beside him. His head clearly above the clouds, startling himself at the words he had just spoken. With a large amount of his courage stored behind his core, he delivered the rest of his statement,

"So, we're celebrating your birthday. You can't change my mind," he said sternly.

But Sachiko was left mute and motionless by his confession, much like the time he proclaimed his feelings when they were at the Metro Dojo but this time, he had declared something else.

Love, he just used love.

Her heart was about to burst that all she could do was cover her red face with her free hand and say the first thing that went through her mind, "I'm just glad you were born today," yes, the first thing that she thought of was gratitude.

Gratitude for the day she was born to be the same as his.

Gratitude for deities for making them meet.

Gratitude for the fates for finally standing on their side.

Satoru drew her closer now and squeezed her hand, "Hey, I'll go with you tomorrow for the memoriam, that okay?"

"Yes, I'd like that…"

They began walking towards the edge of the railing to get a better view of the parade below. Tucking in her hand inside his pocket, he nudged at her,

"But tonight, we'll celebrate. Let's just think about us for tonight, okay, Chi?"

She giggled, "Alright then, but you better bring me home by ten or else the dolls are gonna squeal to Yaga,"

He groaned, "That's too early!"

Sachiko pinched his arm making him yelp in surprise, "And just what were you thinking about doing past ten?" she asked, austerely.

Satoru felt the blood rush through his face that despite the winter draft, he felt like he was suddenly parched, "N-nothing…movie, maybe?" he said, cautiously.

Sachiko giggled once more, "Okay…"

As the parade of lights continued to soar in front of them, Satoru found a new way to take in the image of his ancestral home in a more positive perspective. To him, each corner was now a symbol of hope and security made possible by the person who stood beside him. And while he had gone to observe the events below, Sachiko could not lay her eyes off his peaceful expression.

Sachiko leaned her head against his arm and spoke, "Satoru, daisuki…"

"Eh?" Satoru's hands gripped the cold railing tighter as if he wanted to make sure that he heard her right and he was actually not dreaming. Standing still in hopes that she'd repeat what she said, he slowly turned his neck towards her direction where he saw her calmly take a step closer and look at him affectionately like she never did before.

The absence of words in between him made her fluster that when she repeated her confession, it was muffled out by the sound of the crowd below.

"Daisuki…"

Satoru leaned in closer. The palpitations were becoming more audible, the longer they stared at each other, "Sorry, I didn't hear that, can you repeat that?"

Sachiko scowled at him before rising to stand on her toes as she grabbed his collar so that their distance was merely a short breath away, "Dai-su-"

Before she could spell it out for him, Satoru had lifted her off the floor and pulled her in for a kiss, swiftly molding his lips into her mouth, gently pressing his own passionately and yet carefully until they had found a good rhythm to express what they felt without having to say any more words.

That night, hundreds of faces bore witness to the display of another one of his heroic triumphs that could only be achieved by a selfless act and despite the odds being slim, the same faces allowed themselves to turn blind eyes for their liege's private and personal matter.

A momentous occasion that started a chain of acceptance and promise that set the tone towards their path to enlightenment.

When they finally broke their kiss to breathe, Satoru kept her in his arms, holding her close in defiance to his old selfish and secluded ways. Finally allowing himself of one truth he was sure of,

"I know Sachiko, daisuki da yo…"

Author's note: Thank you so much for reading! I wanted some fluffy moments in this one since the next two chapters are quite big as they are the transition chapters for the characters into adulthood.

This chapter was meant to lay the groundwork for the transitions. Mentions of Heian history, clan backgrounds and birthdays will prove to play important aspects as the story progresses.

I apologize as I have shortened (LOL, can you believe? I actually shortened this chapter?) the birthday parts and have left out Shouko's (November 7th) and Nanami's (July 3rd). I'll likely have them written in as part of Good Juju.

Also, regarding the very important Kitsune event that Suguru was invited to? I will write a one-shot for that one ^^

Birthdays require longer chapters I admit but I just wanted you guys to know that they do remember to celebrate. It's nice that all their birthdays encompass the seasons. For this one, I just wanted to detail more on December 7th since it will set the tone for the succeeding chapters.

For the next part, I do encourage you to read through it to serve as a guide for the information stated in this chapter, PLUS there are easter eggs! ^^

Daisuki- Way of expressing one's feelings to convey that they really like a person a lot, considered an equivalent of expressing one's love (romantically).

Daisuki dayo- roughly translates to I love you so much or I like you a lot.

Kusozu- Death Painting.

Morioka is the capital of Iwate Prefecture where the Geto Springs (actual place) are located. Did you know that Gege Akutami is from Iwate?

Near Iwate, you can actually travel to Miyagi where it is said that Yuta Okkotsu originated from here. As it has been confirmed in the manga that he and Gojo are distant relatives, I have based some of the Gojo clan members to be located in Miyagi as well.

Though in this work, I have stated that Suguru and Satoru have known each other since they were kids, the canonverse actually leans more on stating that they met at school.

Hatsu Uma (first day of the Horse)- important festival for an Inari shrine and is surprise, surprise usually celebrate during the first day of spring on February 3rd (Geto's birthday) usually held in the HQ of all Inari shrines in the Fushimi Inari Taisha in Kyoto. This festival aims to celebrate and pray for good harvest. Superstition has it that unless it rains on that day, a fire could occur.

Who is Sugawara Michizane?

Was a known poet, scholar and legend who lived in the Heian Era (in the JJK world, the Heian era was regarded as the Golden Age of Sorcerers). As stated in this chapter, he was believed to be a favored subject of the emperor who rose in rank (even becoming a governor) thanks to his own merit but slowly lost his seat due to envious rivals such as the Fujiwara clan (Fujiwaras were powerful regents who dominated the imperial court) after his performance as an envoy to China and accusations that he favored another prince other than the selected crown prince as the rightful heir, he was demoted and sent into exile in Dazaifu.

As narrated above, despite continuing his work as a poet peacefully, Michizane missed his home and his treasured plum blossoms. It is rumored that his desire to see his precious plums awakened the spirit of the tree that it flew to him and uprooted itself. Thus Tobiume (flying plum tree) was erected. When he died, attendees of his funeral were scarce and a peculiar incident that led the ox that carried his body to suddenly stop at a certain area in his new home served as his burial ground.

After his untimely death, plague, drought, lightning storms, and other mysterious calamities occurred that affected the imperial court and the aristocrats which people believed to be the wrath of Sugawara. To appease his spirit, they had his title reinstated and a shrine was erected in his honor.

He was then proclaimed as Tenjin (patron or deity of academics or scholars, sky deity).

It was believed that from being an onyro (vengeful spirit) he became a goryo (benevolent spirit).

Dazaifu Tenman-gu- Shrine dedicated to SugaMichi

Tenkai Daimyoji Inari Shrine- Inari shrine located within the Teman-gu.

There are some Buddhist beliefs mentioned here that I find are quite consistent with the way Gege Akutami has referenced them in his work and thought it prudent to read on the very interesting and very insightful teachings of Buddha.

Buddhist Four Noble Truths

1. presence of suffering

2. seeking the cause of suffering (desire and ignorance, cravings for pleasure, connection, intimacy, goods etc).

3. end of suffering

4. Truth of the end of suffering.

I believe this is the central theme of Gojo's statement, "Love is the greatest curse of all," as another way of stating the second noble truth. It centers on how suffering can be caused by worldly yearnings and affectations that deviate from selflessness and contentment from putting the self below others' needs.

It could also be one of the bases for Yuki and Suguru's thoughts regarding the origin and eradication of curses. Curses were created by mortals' cursed energy that springs from negative emotions which are brought about by numerous factors that spring back to the concept of suffering and that the truth to end suffering is to find freedom in heaven and away from the dark clutches of the world.

Yuki and Suguru have provided two very different solutions to end 'suffering.'

Those are just head canon stuff hehe.

Eightfold Path

Buddhist practice as summarized consists of eight practices: right view, right resolve, right speech, right conduct, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right samadhi ('meditative absorption or union').

Gojo's statement, "I wanted so desperately to use my technique-to stop and slow everything down," was referring to his innate CT of Infinity.

Flower Symbolism:

Lotus flowers in her cake signify a connection to one the most known Kitsune legends where the Lotus Sutra mentioned. In the Lotus Sutra the Buddha has become the divine eternal Buddha, who attained perfect Enlightenment endless eons ago. In one legend where a man had fallen in love with a Kitsune, he needed to rewrite/inscribe the Lotus Sutra to save her and help her cross over.

Magenta-like daisy called the Sakurasou- similar appearance to cherry blossoms often mean to symbolize desire and long-lasting love.

Blackthorn flowers are said to represent fortitude or the ability to overcome struggles for a better future or a symbol that states rising from tribulations.

OF COURSE, THANK YOU TO MY BFF /HiragiiTsukasa for the art for this chapter. The art was actually for the picture taking during their stroll when they celebrated Shouko's birthday.
